January Jitters Jolt Stocks - S&P Loses Key 2,000 Level; Bonds' Best Month Since June 2010

Tyler Durden's picture

Given the following - Silver and Bonds win in January followed by Gold, Stocks and Oil Lose...

  • Treasury Bonds - Best month since June 2010
  • Crude Oil - 7th month lower in a row (same as 2008/9) and manic ramp to green on the week (best week since Dec 2013)
  • S&P 500 - Worst month since last January, first two-month drop since May 2012 (worst week in last 8)
  • Dow Transports - Worst month since Sept 2011
  • Gold - Best month since Jan 2012 (worst week in 6)
  • Silver - Best month since June 2014 (worst week since Sept 2013)
  • Swissy - Best month since Dec 2008 (worst week sicne Sept 2011)
  • US Dollar Index - Best month since May 2012 (up 7 months in a row)

We suspect this will help...

Bu, for human oil shorts this afternoon, we suspect this sums up their message to the manipulators and their machines...

We have to start with WTI because that was a fucking joke!!!! This 8.3% ramp into the NYMEX close was the biggest single-day ramp since June 2010... (in case you wonder what happened... read this complaint)

Which magicaly levitated stocks... to the NYMEX close...

Now where have we seen that before?

Crude down for the 8th month in a row... for only the 2nd time in history

*  *  *

Anyway... take a breath because it was quite a month/week/day...

Today's market was domianted by fading yesterday's Yellen pump bounce and the momo ignition from crude which was faded...NOT OFF THE LOWS

On the week, Trannies are the laggard... NOT OFF THE LOWS

On the month, stocks are ugly...

With financials monkey-hammered...

Who could have seen that coming?

Since QE3, only NASDAQ is green (thanks to AAPL)

The S&P 500 dropped back below its 100DMA after Yellen's intervention - that is a problem... And The S&P 500 Lost 2000 at the close

Obviously oil stands out on the week (thanks to today's idiocy) but gold recovered to unch while silver was slammed...

Energy stocks spiked (again) - credit didn't!! Trade Accordingly!

The US Dollar dropped modestly this week (down 0.5%) despite a huge drop in Swissy)

Treasury yields plunged on the week (new 30Y record lows)

Of  course stocks just kept on buying and disbelieving bonds...

And on the month, 3Y is -20bps and the entire rest of the curve is down around 50bps!!

Bonds best month since June 2010...

Credit continues to flash red - just like it did in 2008...

Charts: Bloomberg

Bonus Chart: Unless you got in at the IPO price, you are a loser in SHAK!!

Well all I can say to that is... "Consider the source"

Mel Brooks (born Melvin James Kaminsky)

Brooks was born in Brooklyn, New York, to James and Kate (née Brookman) Kaminsky.[4] His father's family were German Jews from the Baltic Sea port of Danzig (present-day Gda?sk, Poland); his mother's family were Ukrainian Jews from Kiev.[5] He had three older brothers, Irving, Lenny, and Bernie...

Ha Ha Ha Mel ~ You're FUNNY beyond belief... We'll excuse your CAREER blatant racism because you're a jew & everybody knows it's against the law to NOT laugh at racial slurs if they come from jews...

Only assholes like Romney Wordsworth must abide by empirical edicts...

The Narrator:You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future; not a future that will be, but one that might be. (Camera pans to Narrator)This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advancements, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace.(Camera switches to the convicted man) This is Mr. Romney Wordsworth, in his last forty-eight hours on Earth. He's a citizen of the State, but will soon have to be eliminated, because he's built out of flesh and because he has a mind. Mr. Romney Wordsworth, who will draw his last breaths in the Twilight Zone.

Chancellor:Wordsworth, Romney, Field Investigation Finding Obsolescence. Do you know why you're here Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: Yes sir...

Chancellor: I'd ask you to speak up a little if you will, Mr.Wordsworth.

Wordsworth: Yes, sir, I know why I'm here....

Chancellor: You've been under investigation, Mr.Wordsworth for the mandatory period of 1 year and 11 months, you are found to be obsolete. The purpose of this hearing to make a finding in the matter and make a sentence accordingly. Do you understand that?

Wordsworth: I understand that.

Chancellor: Your occupation Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: A librarian, sir....

(Crowd jeers confusingly)

Chancellor: (Puzzled and angrily).....A what!?

Wordsworth: A librarian, sir...

Chancellor: (To Secretary) Has this man had counsel?

Secretary: Yes,sir, he has.

Chancellor: Has he been given orientation?

Secretary:Yes, sir.

(As this goes on, Wordsworth steps back into the darkness, as if knowing his fate)

Chancellor: Mr.Wordsworth, I've been told you've been given couns(notices he's out of the light)...STEP BACK INTO THE LIGHT, MR.WORDSWORTH!

(Wordsworth steps back into the light)

Chancellor: I'm told you've been given Counsel,Mr. Wordsworth. but I'm still not sure, in my own mind, you understand the nature of this hearing. The field investigators in your sector have classified you as obsolete, this finding carries with it serious implications. Do you understand that, Mr.Wordsworth?

(Wordsworth nods)

Chancellor:I'd ask you again, your occupation Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: I AM a librarian, that IS my occupation, that is my PROFESSION. If you people choose to call that obsolete...

Secretary: Request clarification of the term...

Chancellor: Yes...Mr.Wordsworth, the term "You people," you make reference to The State?

Wordsworth: I make reference to The State.

Chancellor: And you persist in declaring your occupation as being that of a librarian. Is that correct?

Wordsworth: Yes, sir, that's correct.

Chancellor: A librarian. Having to do...with books.

Wordsworth:(Proudly) Yes sir...books!

Chancellor: Since there are no more books, Mr.Wordsworth, there are no more libraries, and ,of course, as it follows , there is very little call for the services of a librarian. Case in point: A minister. A minister would tell us that his function is that of preaching the word of God. And since it follows that since The State has proven that there is no God, that would make the function of a minister quite academic as well....

Wordsworth: There IS a God!!

(Crowd jeers in shock. The chancellor looks angry)

Chancellor: You are in error, Wordsworth. There is NO GOD! (To the crowd) The STATE HAS PROVEN THAT THERE IS NO GOD!!

Wordworth: You cannot erase God, with an edict!

(Reuters) - Greece's new left-wing government will cancel plans to sell the state natural gas utility and is firmly opposed to a Canadian-run gold mine that is among the biggest foreign investment projects in the country, the energy minister told Reuters. The comments on Friday by Panagiotis Lafazanis, who represents the more radical wing of the ruling Syriza party, further reinforces early signs that the government is sticking to campaign pledges that have chilled investment and unnerved financial markets.

The Skouries gold mine operated by Vancouver-based Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD.TO) in northern Greece was the flagship project of the last government's foreign investment drive and considered a test case that would reveal whether Greece could protect foreign investors despite local opposition. "We are absolutely against it and we will examine our next moves on it," Lafazanis, a 63-year-old former Communist, told Reuters at his new ministerial office. He declined to say if the government would try to block the project from going ahead.

Shares of Eldorado Gold tumbled to a six-year low on Friday and were trading down 18.5 percent on Friday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The company owns 95 percent of the Greek venture. “We have our permits, so we’re legally entitled to continue our operations and development projects there. So for us, it’s business as usual at this point,” said Krista Muhr, vice president of Eldorado's investor relations, in response to the report.

“I don’t think we would continue investing money into Greece if we weren’t confident,” she added. The firm said last week that it would spend about $200 million this year to develop Skouries mine, and expected to complete construction in late 2016. The project is among the biggest foreign investments in Greece since the country sank into a debt crisis in 2010, with Eldorado taking over the mine in 2012 and promising to invest $1 billion over five years.

But it has been beset by controversy and violent local protests for years and Syriza had criticized the environment impact of the project on the pristine Halkidiki peninsula landscape of beaches and forest surrounding it.The new minister was even more categorical on gas utility DEPA, saying the planned sale of a 65 percent stake would be scrapped. The previous government had planned to accelerate the privatization as part of commitments under Greece's 240-billion-euro ($271 billion) bailout from international lenders, after an initial attempt to sell to Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) in 2013 failed. "In no way will we privatize gas utility DEPA and sell it to anyone, no matter who the interested party is," Lafazanis said."

Went to WalMart today, for the first time in years  Parking lot was very empty compared to what I recall.

The most bizarre thing was every other customer was a morbidly obese female lardhog riding a scooter WTF?

When I was a kid in the 70's a blimp like that would be spotted about once a year, and it would be like - wow look at that fat lady!

Today there were dozens riding in the aisles, 400 plus pounds of lard and sweat and huge flabby arms and legs.  A sad, strange scene.

What has become of this country???

It looks like we're going to hit around 1800 - eventually - as part of a Rising Wedge that sharted in mid-October broke through earlier this year and then was tested and failed with ECB QE. We seem to be on a Descending Triangle since the beginning of the year, but I don't know if today specifically was part of an exhaustion sell that would then lead to around 2040 as part of the Descending Triangle. It wouldn't surprise me to see us heading to around 2040 next week just as part of this overall bearish pattern. It's possible that there could be an upside break to the Triangle and we see 2200 before we see 1800, just there's so much going on in the world I think we'll see 1800 first. However, 1800 might be a floor where we would then see 2200 before something like 1500.

Yeah, they’ll claim it was a ‘natural reaction’ to the oil ‘short squeeze’, but it’s likely the machines planned the end point early in the week.

For the Russell, it was to break stops at the weekly 20 MA, ~116, where we bounced no less than 16 times on the 15m chart the past few days.  Purely by coincidence, during the apparent oil reaming we spiked up almost to the penny to the daily 20 MA, crushing any hopeful shorts, before the plunge.  Art Cashin said something like “all day we knew about large sell-on-close orders” so the oil spike was just an excuse to take candy from smaller shorts, load and dump.  A few years ago AAPL would have been ramped, given the alpha trade (long AAPL/short S&P) was so ubiquitous.

Sure am, ES & NQ for my sins. Never traded the Russell.  One of my favourite setups is to let the market make a low in Globex hrs, I.e. the low made outside of US hrs. Then ,when the US opens wait for it to retest that level , hopefully it will go below said level but close back above on a five minutes bar. The trap is set so go long and target either VWAP or globex high as your target but scaling out as it goes your way. Your stop will be 2pts below the low.  Worked well today and this week. Give it a go sometime. You can also try to short globex high but only in first 3/4 hrs.

Interesting approach.  When developing my mad scientist trading methodology, I found the Russell to be an odd beast, and that many things that work don’t apply to ES or NQ, perhaps because more institutions are involved, with different algos & hedges.   It can be more rewarding given its greater volatility, but also more heartbreaking, with a crazy 4% ramp day once a quarter that annihilates all shorts.  Some may disagree, but it’s so unique, I think you’d almost have to specialize, rather than bounce from the DOW and SPY to RUT.  Happy trading.

Trade he NQ as my poison. Really pretty simple once you've done it awhile especially since the NAZ is nothing but machines so it respects the relevant lines to a T. In the interests of helping a fellow ZHer run the NDX 30 minute chart with the 33 period SMA - that will tell you exactly when to flip like magic

Indeed. It's a simple system - you'll see when you bring it up that there obviously a lot of algos trading that line. 30 minute chart - SMA(33). If you want to get fancy - if the line gets violated then we will move that direction eventually even if there is a bounce for a bit. Also, you can use the RSI(14) to see when we are overbought/sold and will be moving back to the line shortly

There's some serial concern about that, and what with drills going on at the same time, well, who could ever think that terror events would be run under the guise of drills?

The DJI just completed 3 days WE-TH-FR of 1.5% plus moves each day. The last time that happened was Oct. 7-8-9, after which the index tanked 4.8% from 16,700 to 15,900 in the next 4 days. Can you see both this week's 3 days and the October 3 days volatility in the chart below?

Maybe market history is about to rhyme, but if you're not looking for it, you won't see it coming:

A 4% decline from here takes us places, like DJI 16,500 and SPX 1915.
