Ukraine "Truce"? Tanks Are Rolling In Poland As NATO Plans Permanent Eastern European Bases

Tyler Durden's picture

With Ukraine, Germany, and France all expressing their concern this morning about "conflict escalation" between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukraine military, the so-called "truce" appears to be hanging by a thread of semanticism (despite OSCE's please for respect of the cease-fire and the demarcation line). Today's triple whammy of 'escalation' appears more focused on the non-Russian side as first, France begins sending tanks into Poland; second, Ukraine shifts its tanks to the front-line; and third - and potentially most inflammatory for Putin - NATO has confirmed plans to create permanent command centers in Eastern Europe. Putin has not responded yet but reports of 'nuclear bombers' flying above the English Channel "with transponders turned off," suggests the sabre rattling continues.

Ukrainian civilians are being evacuated:

Leaders call for immediate “cease-fire” to fighting in east Ukraine after speaking on the phone today, AFP says, citing the French president’s staff.

So the following takes place:

1) France starts sending tanks into Poland...

France is pledging tanks and armored vehicles to bolster NATO forces in Poland, where leaders are increasingly uneasy about Russia.

In a joint statement Friday after a meeting between French President Francois Hollande and Polish Prime Minister Eva Kopacz, the two governments also called for a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine, where fighting has intensified between pro-Russia separatists and government troops.

NATO has no permanent presence in Eastern Europe but since last April members have been cycling forces and military equipment through the region in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The French military equipment is expected to remain in Poland for two months.

2) Ukraine begins moving its tanks to the front-line in Eastern Ukraine

and 3) NATO Plans New Permanent Command Centers in Eastern Europe

NATO said Friday it will deploy small units in six eastern European nations to help coordinate a spearhead force set up in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the units in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania will be the first of their kind there.

Defense ministers from the 28-nation military alliance will discuss the full force, which can react quickly to any hotspots in Europe, when they meet on Feb. 5.

Stoltenberg said countries responsible for providing the several thousand troops should be known next week.

The forward units will comprise a few dozen troops only. They will plan and organize military exercises, and provide command and control for any reinforcements the force might require.

"They're going to plan, they're going to organize exercises, to provide ... some key command elements for reinforcements," Stoltenberg said.

Russia has been very quiet today as all of this has occurred but we suspect the last move - NATO bases so close to Russia's border - will warrant some response very rapidly... or perhaps Putin already pre-empted it...

Putin Sends Nuclear Bombers Over English Channel: “Transponders Turned Off… Invisible to Air Traffic Control”

The U.K.’s Royal Air Force scrambled fighter jets on Thursday after a pair of nuclear-capable Russian bombers flew across a busy civilian air traffic corridor above the English Channel. The bombers had their transponders turned off, British officials said, making them invisible to many air traffic control systems. The incident disrupted multiple flights – and ended with the U.K. government demanding the Russian ambassador appear at the Foreign Office to explain the actions.

This is not going to end well.

The sooner the Russian military invades Ukraine, destroys that country's armed forces, quarantines the political class sympathetic to the west, and makes of this failed state some sort of a loose confederation of provinces in which ethnic Russians enjoy total autonomy, the chances of a major war in Eastern Europe are greatly diminished.

Ukraine is quite a prize, the Poles, Turks, Germans, Swedes, Brits, French have all been there before and are there again trying to conquer it to their empires, now the EU empire. Some countried have been there four times, the goths, the teutonic nights, the prussians, the nazis in ww2 and now the germans again via EU and neo nazis

Cosmos, you know the difference between Ukraine and the Ottman empire? No? Simple, the Ottoman empire, the Turks, have nothing to do with Ukraine. What the Teutonic order did in 1497 was attacking the Turkish fortress of Akkerman on behalf of the Polish king, who was the overlord of the Teutonic knights at that time. This has nothing to do with Ukraine whatsoever. The Russians conquered that territory around 1790 from the Turks, it became something called "Ukraine" 300 years AFTER the Teutonic knights did a campaigne for the Poles in that area. Your senseless drivel without any education is hilarious.

Very funny. Goths? The newest researches based on genetics say all central Europe were the Slavs' place of living since 3000-4000 years back. There're nothing like 'genetic german'. It's only mix of Slavs, Goths, Celts. Characteristic haplogroup R1a1 was there long long time before first Goths even born (R1b). The rest is just ignorance you present. "...The sooner the Russian military invades Ukraine..."

Russia is not at war with Ukraine and has no intention of invading it or overthrowing the government (unlike the Jewish-Ukrainian oligarchs and their dual-citizen U.S. neocon backers)

"...destroys that country's armed forces..."

The Ukraine military will cease to exist because nobody want's to fight for the oligarchs. Over a million Ukrainian military-age men left Ukraine for Crimea. Another million or so are in Russia to avoid the draft. There is nobody left to sucker into the military. Towns in Odessa have been throwing out military representatives serving draft notices. Men have vowed to go to prison rather than serve.

The unfortunate guys already drafted into the Ukraine military are being slaughtered. 7,000 Ukrainian conscripts in Debaltsevo were just surrounded - both supply and escape are cut off. They were ordered not to surrender last week, but their officers and the Ukrainian National Guard protecting them fled a few days ago. They are panicking and their forces are in chaos. They are out of ammunition, starving and either surrenduring, switching sides or getting killed.

"...quarantines the political class sympathetic to the west..."

Don't count on it Thousands of ex-militia have started showing up in Kiev. Porky and Yats will be Gaddafi'd - wait for videos of it on LiveLeak. Dual-citizens will be choppered off the embassy roofs a la 'Fall of Saigon'. Pro-Russian rebels have sworn to go to Kiev and kill the politicians and their Nazi thugs for what they've done to civilians in the Donbass, so Svaboda and Right Sector are just as 'endangered'.

"...and makes of this failed state some sort of a loose confederation of provinces in which ethnic Russians enjoy total autonomy..."

Ethnic Russians in Ukraine consider themselves Ukrainian citizens. They never wanted autonomy until after the coup d'etat and the new junta outlawed the Russian language in all official business and schools. They were perfectly happy with Ukraine when it wasn't run by the insane.

"...the chances of a major war in Eastern Europe are greatly diminished...."

Except the U.S. will never admit defeat and prolong the bloodshed. Also, psychotic Jewish-Ukrainian oligarch Kolomoisky will Sampson-option Ukraine if he can't control it.

The Neocon agenda is eternal war for eternal peace.  They have never met a war that they did not escalate.  That was not a problem when attacking medieval Muslim countries. But attacking Russia may be their last war:

Gorbachev warns Ukraine could ignite World War III

By Niles Williamson
31 January 2015

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union, accused the United States Thursday of initiating a new Cold War with Russia and expressed fears that the conflict could escalate into a nuclear Third World War.

Gorbachev made his comments as fighting escalated in Ukraine between forces directed by the US- and European Union-backed government in Kiev and pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Donbass region.

“Plainly speaking, the US has already dragged us into a new Cold War, trying to openly implement its idea of triumphalism,” the former Soviet leader toldInterfax. “What’s next? Unfortunately, I cannot be sure that the Cold War will not bring about a ‘hot’ one. I’m afraid [the United States] might take the risk.”

He criticized the US and the EU for continuing to press for more economic sanctions against Russia. “All we hear from the US and the EU now is sanctions against Russia,” he continued. “Are they completely out of their minds? The US has been totally ‘lost in the jungle’ and is dragging us there as well.”

http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2015/01/31/ukra-j31.html

John Pilger Says The West Is Lying Itself To Nuclear War

With Russia, he says he has never known the truth ‘so inverted’ over any one issue. He believes we are in the midst of a cold war more dangerous than the one he grew up with, comparing the raw propaganda of the prior to what we’re seeing now, with a ‘real possibility’ of a nuclear war. He compares it to Iraq, because both involved ‘fiction,’ the idea that Russia is attacking the West. He says oil prices were driven down by agreement between the US and Saudis, to wreck the Russian economy. He says it was NATO and the US that took over Ukraine, to the point that Joe Biden’s son is on the board of Ukraine’s biggest private gas provider. At a meeting in Yalta in September 2013, the ‘takeover of Ukraine was planned’ by prominent politicians and multinationals. There was a ‘coup stage-managed by the Obama administration,’ and blame shifted to Russia, who acted purely defensively. He says there is a ‘real prospect of war’ with a nuclear power and strong conventional military, and Putin has now started ‘talking red lines’ himself. He describes ‘extraordinary propaganda’ promoting tension and demonising Russia, which ‘may end up being self-fulfilling.

Soviet Union, Russia, Putin simply blew it.  Being more concerned with making money for the elite in Russia and taking no action as their "allies" were destroyed one at a time has resulted in NATO about to be firmly at their door.

Talk, complaints, photo opps doing judo or riding horses, flying some planes around and shouting about the "mother of all battles" is just laughed at.  Russia is about to be contained.  The new NATO bases will start small and grow quickly.  It also does not matter if Russia is the one speaking the truth anymore.

Too damn late now it appears for Russia.  Now Putin and the Russia elites may be able to negotiate nice situations for themselves and to siphon money or profits for themselves.  Even if the Russian people suffer greatly the elite will live well.  The only chess Putin is playing is what will help the elite maintain their lifestyles, even at the detriment of Russia.

Russia has not fought directly.  They may send supplies to Syria and into EUkraine but they never directly shoot at NATO.  It will never stop unless it is stopped by force.  Even a financial collapse of some sort will be handled in a way that allows this push to continue.

Putin and he spokespeople - do something or shut up - and soon.

Putin is not Gandhi. He is, however, exactly what Russia needed to get off her knees and restore her dignity after the fall of the Soviet Union and subsequent ass-raping by Jewish-Russian oligarchs. He stopped the wholesale looting of state assets and inspired a national spirit to rebuild Russia. Most of all, he stopped Russia from appearing like a buffoon in global affairs and sent notice that Russia was once again a force to be reckoned with.

Outside the slimy halls of Virginia think-tanks, there were plenty of ex-intel and ex-military that felt the greatest threat to the security of United Stated in the 1990's was a weak, corrupt, unstable Russia. That threat was two sided: 1) you really didn't know what Russia would do at any given time, and 2) cowardly neo-con psychopaths in the U.S. would seek to exploit the situation for their own ends. Putin took care of #1. However, there was no Putin in the U.S. to reign in the cowardly psychopaths here. They were actually encouraged under Bush and have run absolutely wild under Obama - with plenty of dual-citizens elbowing in for their piece of the pie, too.

The biggest threat to U.S. and global security today is not Russia or ISIS, it's the president, congress and judicial branches of the U.S. government. Which, coincidentally, are also the biggest threats internally to the constitution and rights of U.S. citizens. Voting and the law are both corrupt and useless in their current form to fix anything.

Yes, biggest threat seemed to be Russian Nukes & Chem-Bio weapons being sold on the open market by the former Soviets themselves.

Would think the hidden part of the CIA would have tracked and bought some of these Nukes and other weapons. I would even guess that additional US Agencies would have tried to buy those weapons since they would be tools of the trade for False Flags... Clearly So.

Great summary Paveway.

Putin's role in your first paragraph was only undermined by his not knowing where to stop, and of abandoning the much more fruitful and effective diplomatic options that were until recently fully available for him to exploit. He has blown such a golden opportunity to change the game. It's a shame because the whole world could have benefited from that in an huge way. Putin simply reached the limit of his capacity and ran out of ideas and derailed his past admirable achievements.

The sad case for Russians now is the new 6-year term for Putin, before he's replaced at the head of the political class, so this is going to go on and on. By the time Putin leaves Russia will be a wrecked again.

Keep in mind the Soviets had MiG15s with Russian pilots in action in Korea fighting it out against western air force jets and piston attack fighters attached to the UN intervention task force.

I have zero doubt numerous Russian military are fighting in Ukraine today, they have even repeatedly and cynically mouthed the laughable excuses that some former soldier patriots or soldiers on holidays may have gone to Ukraine to fight Kiev State forces (supposedly as non-state spec-mercs or volunteers).

That's just an excuse to cover their ass for when a bunch of active Russian mil and kit are killed and captured and provide direct proof of Russian military invasion, and direct military operations inside a UN recognized state territory.

Other than that your real-politic summary of the implications were pretty much spot on.

Yeah, but according to Willie it was China, not the US, that would do the shakin'. Mind you, I have not seen his subscription stuff, so maybe he says the US shakes things up there. But in his public predictions, it's all China taking action and the US fading quickly into irrelevance.

A view I agree with, from what I've seen as so far. Many of his predictions that I've seen are pretty much dead-on.

Personally I think the reason NATO is so desperate to start a shooting war somewhere, anywhere, is b/c without one they break up and fade away like the useless 20th-century fossil they are.

And the reason the US "leadership" goes along with it is that those who are not completely insane, are senile and have managed to convince themselves they could "win" a nuclear war as long as they get in there first. Americans, man, as people you guys are second to none but your "leaders" are going to get you killed, either by war, disease, or starvation. They will destroy the world if they are not stopped soon.

I hate that so many "western leaders" are war criminals, and I hate even more how subservient and ignorant our populations have become. The hope of the world right now relies on the sun setting damn fast in the so-called "west".

Shutting off oil and natural gas to Europe is an economic nuclear bomb. The Russians aren't going to go "nuclear" unless they have too. Besides, it is enough for the Europeans (especially the Germans) to know that the Russians can shut them down if they want to to keep the situation under control (from the Russian point of view). Another issue is that the Russians are letting the Ukraine war go on such as it has to show Europe that the Americans and their stooges are a bunch of murdering Nazis. They could overrun the Kiev scum anytime they want but they don't want to give the American neo-cons/Nazis an excuse to start a nasty all-out war inside Europe. Remember that the American government decided in 2010 that MAD (mutually assured destruction), the most sane policy out of the Cold War, was no longer American policy. This translates into the gangster devils believe they can win a nuclear war so the Russians and Chinese have to be very careful to not to give them an excuse to murder half the world.

I would just kick the US & UK Ambassadors and their entire embassy staffs out of Moscow, and park tactical nukes at every civilian border crossing with a country that borders Russia and now hosts NATO troops.

I think the UNSC (and the General Asembly) should discuss this "deal" starting with who exactly the parties to the deal were, since the lawful government of Ukraine certainly didn't agree to any transition, and there's nothing like an actual crisis for overcoming the intransigence of UN bureaucracy.

Each of us must do our part in this. We must stop relying on leaders such as Putin or Tsipras or Xi or Erdogan. We must do this ourselves, and the more difficult it is to collapse central bank currency and debt by repudiating it, the more necessary it is for each of us to do.

I've been studying in yet another finance class and did what I could not to bring this up in class in fear of a brawl between students from different areas of the world.

During class I learned that:
1. People from the world are not guaranteed to uphold any ethics based on culture.  Ethics is a voluntary thing unless it's forced on you- or if you're smart enough to work with realities of consequences.
2. All the stupid Asian ecstatic wannabes only cared whether or not there was cocaine on Wall Street.

I mean, how is it no obvious that the people running this country's fiscal, monetary and sovereignity into the ground wiht policies that would make monkies puke not have damaged their brains with overpriced stepped on baby laxatives laced with rat poinson.

3. I learned that Asians are not smart by birth.  They're forced to study or else they would carry on like stupid self loathing junkie animals high on sugar otherwise .

Definately NOT the sharpest tools in the shed or else they would've loaned the US private sctor businesses money with heavy handed control through proxies instead of just dumping government monies into US Treasuires so the US government can have a monopoly of power to do this.  In Asia, the elders rule and the stupid elders don't get the fact that the US doesn't work like ASia and you have to treat the US differently.  With this thingie called "quality control".  So our coked out bankers, lobbyists and methed out nazis in the US government don't have the room to pull this kind of shit.

BTW, Asian governments until the Asian Financial Crisis have had to bail out their big companies since WWII- which is why Asia remained a 3rd world shithole.   INCLUDING JAPAN.  IF you think it's THAT great, you haven't tried the Toshiba yet.   Speaking of stupid JApan, they just bought US TReasuries.   Repent Mrs. Wantanabe!   We only know that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor because, like, you know---the US blocked oil supplies to Japan.  Which means NO GUCCI FOR YOU!  (IF they know enough English to understand that bit-which most of them still don't).

The build-up of Nato forces in Poland is irrelevant since the proxy war is in Ukraine. The separatists talk about 10.000 ukrainian soldiers in the kettle of Debalzewo which are apparently prevented by artillery to leave the kettle. The losses mentioned in your article are nothing compared to the likely real losses.

The US and Europe act totally irresponsible by firing up the war further and further. The refusal by Kiev to withdraw heavy weapons, the continued artillery fire on the cities of Donezk and Lughansk and the announcment of the planned enrollement of a further 100.000 young ukrainians did produce the response of a tactical preemption offensive by the separatists which try to drive the artillery so far away that the cities are out of reach. It is presently unclear if the attack on Mariopol is a feint attack or not.

Putins demands should be considered in earnest: (a) federalization of the Ukraine including sovereign integrity except for crimean peninsula (b) Ukraine shall not become a Nato member (c) but shall join the eurasian trade union. Everyone loving peace shall find the "price" acceptable. The EU would have to give up the silly plan of enrolling Ukraine as the latest member into the EU-ponzi scheme and the US would have to give up on their plan to drive Russia into a corner.

Western Backed Kiev regime is losing in a proxy war against Russian Bloc Eastern regime.

Hence calls for ceasefire and demarcation.

China just wishes that the children should quit squabbling and get down to business.

Ukraine is a mess (which is a fact no one can deny).

Ukraine could be a model solution.

As we have the attention of the world leaders, how about they act like world leaders.

Partition Ukraine for now, an arbitrary big fat strip of DMZ land.

Any fire coming from the Western side will be bombed by Nato.

Any from the Eastern side will be bombed by Russia bloc.

Turn all of the cameras on and put it on the net, let us all police it.

If You Have Nothing To Hide, You Have Nothing To Fear.

Have the UN crowdsource a new Ukraine, within it's borders before this recent fuckup.

one where ordinary people want to live and benefit from the common good, free from inefficient cronyism and oligarchy. (transparent public accountability).

A constitution based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

A Free, Fair and Accessible Judiciary.

A set of principles to organise the economy (Elinor Ostrum)

The UN and the Great Leaders could create The New Republic in Ukraine if they wanted to.

As usual the losers are the ordinary people, the lines on the map move in important generals offices, vast sums are spent on ordnance and nothing on infrastructure.

We've all seen the ghost towns of China, what that means is that there are a load of Chinese builders without jobs.

Ukraine needs building not bombing.

The fucking UN needs to get off its arse and put its money where its mouth is.

Build me a new Ukraine, one where ordinary people want to live.

How fucking hard can that be ?

US President Obama stated in a CNN interview today (Feb. 2, 2015) that the United States took an active part in the February 2014 coup in Ukraine, which installed pro-Western authorities. The administration will no doubt claim this statement was taken out of context. But the evidence is irrefutable, and Obama's "Freudian Slip" is hardly the singular proof of US complicity. Nevertheless, well over 90% of the American population continues to believe the lie that Russia was the primary cause for the crisis in the Ukraine.

Russia has been very quiet today as all of this has occurred but we suspect the last move - NATO bases so close to Russia's border -

This is the summation of all the strategic and tactical missteps Putin has made over the past year. What the hell did he think would occur if he invaded Crimea with special forces, annex it, then move on to incite a separatist civil revolt and war in East Ukraine and arm and train the rebels attacking a sovereign UN recognized State neighbor?

Did Putin expect NATO to retreat to the Azores or something? He was going to always end up with them right in his face if he continued to attack Ukraine and make more and more threats of armed action and a 'disaster' in Ukraine.

Putin wanted this, he's done everything he could to escalate and engineer a wider confrontation in Ukraine whilst claiming he wants the very opposite.

Words don't cut it Mr. Putin and putting forces in without shoulder patches fooled no one, it doesn't impress anyone either. Your grand strategic blunder continues to deepen by the day, and the Russian people's economic and financial misfortunes have unfortunately only begun to impact.

Your actions describe a belligerent inadequate fool, Mr. Putin.
