New Jersey Teens Just Learned What Happens When You Start A Business In America

When I was a teenager, it was pretty common for young people in my lower-middle class neighborhood to find work.
I was a waiter myself… though probably one of the worst in history, as I may still hold the record at Tippin’s Restaurant and Pie Pantry for the most cups of coffee spilled on patrons.
A lot of other kids would do odd jobs like cutting the grass and whatnot. And some of them were pretty successful at it.
I remember two kids in my class, Ryan and Will, had a very successful lawn mowing partnership.
One of the reasons they did so well was because they realized how much more efficient and profitable they could be if they could maximize the number of clients within a single neighborhood.
Instead of wasting time driving around from neighborhood to neighborhood, they could focus on servicing as many yards as possible within a few blocks.
This was an extremely important lesson for them… and one they would never learn in school.
It’s obvious that doing things like this provides incredible and in many cases life-changing lessons for kids.
It’s the whole idea of having the freedom to start something from scratch out of your own sweat and labor, to provide a valuable service and to work hard, and stake your reputation on the quality of what you do.
This concept is at the very foundation of the American Dream. Or at least it used to be.
Case in point, last week, two teenagers in New Jersey were going around their neighborhood advertising their snow-shoveling service right before the big storm hit.
Seems pretty enterprising. But in the New America where security trumps all else, a local resident called the police to report about the teens’ “suspicious activity”.
It’s the starkest example of how “if you see something say something” is one of the most enslaving, destructive mantras in history.
Police actually came out to investigate since, apparently running a snow-shoveling business is something that only criminal terrorists would do.
Even when the police saw that it was just two harmless kids trying to earn some money, they didn’t let them go on about their business.
Instead they forced them to stop. Because in the Land of the Free, it seems you need a permit in order to offer to shovel snow for people.
And so these two entrepreneurial teenagers were sent home by the police for their lack of permitting after being suspected of suspicious activity by a local resident.
Just think about the lesson that’s being reinforced here: if you get off your ass, go out there, and try to take charge of your financial future, you’ll end up with nothing but a bunch of headaches, accusations, and unpleasant encounters with the government.
These kids just learned that in the Land of the Free, they’re better off staying home.
It’s a terrible thing to teach people, especially kids in their formative years, and it happens all the time; we constantly hear these stories now about little girls getting run off from their lemonade stands, etc.
Entrepreneurship and enterprise are good for everyone, creating successful businesses, jobs, wealth, and valuable products and services for an entire society.
You’d think that a government drowning in debt would bend over backwards to encourage people to get out there and hustle.
Instead they’ve done just the opposite.
Whether intentional or not, they’re waging a de-facto war on one of the last remaining cultural values that made America what it once was.

I also just learned a valuable lesson. If someone you dont like is walking/driving/riding/pushing a stroller/whatever, call the police and report it as suspisious activitiy. it will be taken care of in short order.

In this particular case, the law is the issue and not the police enforcing it. This is flat-out dumb that a kid needs a permit to mow lawns, shovel snow, or have a neighborhood lemonade stand. Next thing you know, OSHA will need to stop out to ensure the kids are meeting safety guidelines and they will need to purchase insurance.

I live in the communist state of Illlinois which is an overtaxed over regulated hell hole. I stayed at the daughters house overnight to escape driving home during snomaggedon. 18 inches in 24 hours. There was a set of people tracks to my front door and back. Kids looking to shovel my driveway I presumed. We have had a couple utes knockning on doors after snows in the neighbor hood lately. I find it encouraging actually.
I saw something in those tracks. I saw hope for our country. I am saying something. I saw something and I said somehing here so I satisfied that poster. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. I saw hope in those tracks though I did snowblow my own driveway.

The whole truth about this incident is that the teens were allowed to shovel snow for those people who contacted them via text or phone. They were not allowed to solicit their services door-to-door without a permit. Not everyone wants people pounding on their door looking for work.

A human being does not need a license to exchange his labor for the means to live his life. It is part of a man's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I once started a business doing house portraits, door to door, cold calling. I started at around $350 and ended post 9-11 charging 2500. per commission. The last thing I would do would be to go to the local police station to tell them I was going to be going door to door. They would have treated me like a criminal. You had to strike fast and then leave the neighborhood.

Sadly, I think most authoritarian (anti-free-enterprise) licensing requirements come from members of the local Chamber of Commerce who seek to establish or enlarge their local business monopolies by outlawing everyone else from doing things they themselves do or even MIGHT DECIDE TO do to make more money.

A couple of years ago my son wanted to buy himself a computer to play PC games. We told him that he would have to pay for half if he wanted his own. He makes $5 a week in allowance money for doing chores around the house, but he quickly grew impatient. He considered his options and asked me to take him to the local Mexican grocery store. He bought a couple of bags of mango-flavored candy suckers that cost $3 for a bag of 20 or so suckers. He started taking them to school and charged his classmates $1 a sucker. They happily paid, and I took him every week to buy more. Eventually, his principal called him in and told him to stop selling them...he didn't have a fucking license for selling food. By that time he had more than earned enough for his computer but he learned something even more important: government bureaucracy sucks and will never, ever stand up for the little guy. I have no doubt that he will be an entrepreneur someday, just like his dad, but he will forever distrust the system. And that is good.

As someone who works with youth, It is my experience that they are not all as weak, ill-informed, and midless as some might believe. Are there some that fit that description? Certainly. Are they the majority? Possibly/probably. There are some extraordinary youth in our country, and they DO understand that the bazooka of information and images directed at them from media, academia, and advertisers has a manipulative angle to it and are better equipped at this stage of their lives to deal with it than I was at theirs. They may not get the severity, immediacy, or the whole picture at this moment in time, but education is a process, as is just about everything else in life. They will fill in the blanks and connect the dots over time (if there is enough). They meed mentors. Like you. Mentors like the ones you and I had. If there is going to be a 'reset' button pushed at some point, which seems inevitable, the youth will be on the front lines. A lot of the concepts and info discussed here is foreign to them. There is a learning curve. We all know they don't get it at school. Just keep fighting the fight, stay consistant and don't give up on them----

I couldn't live there. Too many busybodys, do gooders, and people who think calling the police is the best response for every situation in which they feel unsure or unsafe.
I don't think there's enough testosterone in the coastal cities to build 100 real men. Much less the mllions of nominal males that live there.

This is why everyone needs to know some actual law. Is snow removel a regualted occupation? Regualted occupations can only be regulated by the police power of the state. And that police power can only be exercised to protect the rights, safety and or health of the people. This is obviously an abuse of the police power, as someone shoveling snow does not effect rights, safety or the health of the people.

Jannone said an officer was dispatched to the street because a resident called to report a "suspicious person" with curly blond hair and a hoodie who was walking through yards.
A responding officer told the young men that it wasn't safe to be out and to come back during the day.
Jannone said his department has no interest in cracking down on kids who want to shovel sidewalks or driveways. The law was made for transient scam artists who prey on the vulnerable, he said.
"The spirit of the ordinance is to protect residents from gypsy activity. People will solicit door to door and target the elderly and get into their house," he said.
Janonne said the fliers that the two young men were handing out had their first names and cell phone numbers.
"People doing something illegal probably won't extend this much identifying information," he said.
The pair managed to get five jobs by early Tuesday afternoon, earning between $25 to $40 a house.
