White House Considers Sending Antitank Missiles, Small Arms And Ammo To Ukraine "To Deter Russia"

Tyler Durden's picture

While the US government has yet to opine on the recently leaked information during Joe Biden's November trip to Ukraine that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the US is already providing lethal aid to Kiev, and certainly has said absolutely nothing about the presence of US soldiers - either taxpayer funded or mercenary - on Ukraine soil, the topic of legitimizing lethal weapons is once again on the front of the White House agenda.

According to the WSJ, "The U.S. government is considering providing Javelin antitank missiles, small arms and ammunition to Ukraine, part of an effort to try to deter further aggression by Russia-backed rebels there, according to U.S. officials."

Why now? The official story is that "The Pentagon has long supported providing some lethal aid, but until recently the White House has signaled little interest in such a move to avoid escalating the confrontation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.... An administration official said Susan Rice , the White House national-security adviser, has reopened the discussion, though officials cautioned that no decision has been made."

The one thing holding back the US is the question whether, in the words of the WSJ, "a decision to provide “defensive lethal arms” would prompt Mr. Putin to reduce his support for the pro-Moscow rebels or trigger him to ramp it up, further destabilizing the country."

The unofficial story is that having been caught red-handed in Ukraine, whose proxy civil war between the US and Russia is clear to anyone with half a brain by now, the US is tired of hiding its direct, and quite lethal, involvement and it prepared to risk the diplomatic fallout from officially supporting with weapons yet another foreign nations. Because the US support of Iraq's army wasn't enough of a lesson, if only for US taxpayers: recall that to General Dynamics, the ISIS tragicomedy has played out precisely as expected, and has been quite lucrative to boot.

And so Ukraine is about to make the shareholders of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the manufacturers of the Javelin missile, that little richer as a result of spreading democracy and the American way around the globe. Perhaps boost US GDP in the process as well. After all the ghost of Keynes is alive, and breaking windows, or as the case may be, firing anti-tank missiles deep in the night.

What is odd, is America's desire to get involved into yet another war on a different continent, especially when the purveyors of western ideals on said continent themselves are quite unwilling to get involved:

In Budapest on Monday, Ms. Merkel said Germany won’t supply arms to Ukraine because it was still banking on a peaceful solution, despite the recent escalation of hostilities.

That, and she knows quite well that the German borderline recession will be full-blown once Russia again retaliated to western Europe's own escalation, a key driver behind Europe's collapse into a triple-dip recession last year.

And finally, as to Obama's intention to engage Putin, even if unilaterally, perhaps the following interview by the president with CNN's Fareed Zakaria from this weekend will provide some clues. In it, rather distinctly, the US president admits that "Mr. Putin made this decision around Crimea and Ukraine — not because of some grand strategy, but essentially because he was caught off-balance by the protests in the Maidan and [Ukraine's then-President Viktor] Yanukovych then fleeing after we had brokered a deal to transition power in Ukraine."

Of course, in a normal and democratic nation, some would even inquire why the US was brokering "power transition" deals in Ukraine - allegedly a sovereign country - and whether as some have suggested, the US was behind the bloody events of the Euromaidan from precisely one year ago.

Then again, this is neither, and is instead a nation where the crowning achievement of the current administration was passed thanks to the "lack of transparency" and courtesy of the "stupidity of the American voter"...

I've come to the conclusion that the reason Obama doesn't want to get more involved in the middle east is that he wants to concentrate his efforts on starting a war with Russia.

Not that he wouldn't love to start another shooting war there, it's just that's its a distration from where his masters want to concentrate their efforts.  Gotta get those evil Ruskies despite the fact our fucking around in Ukraine would be equivalent to Russia starting shit in Canada.

Pressure is building against .gov by nations wanting to exit trade in USD.  War with Putin has to be done, or .gov folds up the tent and ends USD reserve status.  Immediately, standard of living for the foodstamp nation nose dives.

This is the FED and other crony fascists wanting to "deter" Russia - in other words, "accept our currency along with our conditions or face being bombed".

The script is old, boring, and predictable.

The outcome, though, is going to be interesting.  Russia is not Libya.

This is a very unwise (in retrospect) engagement that the US MUST win. There is no "amicable gentlemens' agreement" exit route, especially in view of the number of Russian-speaking Ukrainians who have already died in this "little adventure", much to the disgust of Russia. Even a stalemate would mean the end of the preception of the US as an invincible force, and once that image is lost, that's it as far as the days of the USA being able to throw its weight around with no regard for the consequences to others.

The only problem is that it won't just be a conflict with Russia, but a conflict with Russia AND China, China knowing full well that should Russia fall, they are next, and at this stage they lack sufficient military might to effectively deter a US onslaught single-handed (although they might find an attack by "what's left of the US Armed Forces" after a Russian engagement a much less challenging exercise!)

Mind you, the Russians have made it crystal clear that they WILL use nuclear weapons should the need arise to defend their homeland, and should things escalate to this extent, a very nuclear WW3 would seem an almost inevitable consequence.

We sure DO live in "very interesting times" . . . .

The perception that the US is militarily invincible evaporated a long time ago, some would argue since 'Nam. Whilst the latter is debatable, the perception around the world, at this time, is that the US is long past it's prime, not just militarily, but economically too.  As has already been noted, the current proxy war is just a distraction, largely for domestic consumption. I mean, does anyone on here believe that Obama could explain the coming demise of SWIFT and the implications of that for the US, to the American people? Nope, I thought not. The geopolitical equations: China and Russia (and India) in bed together, the US locked out of Eurasia, the failure to secure a bridgehead in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol, the failure of the oil play and the double whammy of how that's hurting America. You don't need to be a genius to hack this, it's the equivalent of painting by numbers. Then there's Europe..........and the keen sense of disappointment experienced in Washington as plans unravel there........You can be pretty sure we're not in Kansas anymore.

Yep. It's all about having a distraction and an "enemy" to blame.

But a big incentive for Obama is to pretend that he has "outsmarted" Putin. His ego is fully engaged in this fantasy. And he doesn't mind risking WW III to show people how clever he is.

The EU doesn't mind because they want to show all minor nations thinking of "Grexits" that Putin will invade them unless they play along with the EU/NATO/Us program.

It's really quite sad to think that all the progress since 1989 is going to be pissed away.

Bad news, folks. The next annoited US President is... Jeb Bush.

TPTB have some leeway in who is allowed to be President. Hillary was supposed to win in 2008 but Soros made TPTB a better offer: and the rest of TPTB were thrilled at the prospect of installing a gay, self absorbed muslim teleprompter reader who wasn't even qualified to be US President.

Its Soros playing a practical joke on the astonishingly stupid mass of American sheep, and at the same time creating concern and dispair among those who can see what is actually going on.

Think of it as Soros showing off to the other Bilderbergers and Jewish/Zionist oligarchs. A 'hold my champaign glass and watch this" moment indeed.

Hillary is past her "use-by" date - besides, the Dems had their eight years so now its the Repubs turn. Its all part of the deal.

How many CIA, FBI, Blackwater agents are already in Ukraine?  The Nobel Prize Winner has never met a war that he did not escalate.

Reckless Congress 'Declares War' on Russia

Today the US House passed what I consider to be one of the worst pieces of legislation ever. H. Res. 758 was billed as a resolution “strongly condemning the actions of the Russian Federation, under President Vladimir Putin, which has carried out a policy of aggression against neighboring countries aimed at political and economic domination.”

In fact, the bill was 16 pages of war propaganda that should have made even neocons blush, if they were capable of such a thing.

The resolution (paragraph 3) accuses Russia of an invasion of Ukraine and condemns Russia’s violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. The statement is offered without any proof of such a thing. Surely with our sophisticated satellites that can read a license plate from space we should have video and pictures of this Russian invasion. None have been offered. As to Russia’s violation of Ukrainian sovereignty, why isn’t it a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty for the US to participate in the overthrow of that country’s elected government as it did in February? We have all heard the tapes of State Department officials plotting with the US Ambassador in Ukraine to overthrow the government. We heard US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland bragging that the US spent $5 billion on regime change in Ukraine. Why is that OK?

1 - Putin was becoming an obstacle in the cause in Syria. This was a way to create a side issue for him to be dealing with so the focus can be off Bashar's real estate.

2 - Ukraine was also just another step in the grand plan. Good ol' Zbignew is probably smiling somewhere. This was in the making for a few decades. Kind of a curious read if you dive in the the resume of Yuschenko's wife. Seems that fella was likely molded just like everyone's favorite - Saakoshvilli in Georgia. In 2008, as we saw in one of the leaked cables, the instability caused by NATO's meddling in Ukraine and Georgia was discussed and all of the potential circumstances were weighed out. US interests in that country would be to have another NATO puppet on Russia's border...set up bases and be able to close in on the Kremlin.

I would watch for Kazakhstan and Belarus next. Although in both the current leaders have a pretty firm grip....Belarus is still stuck in the 90's in some ways...with recent inflation putting even more pressure on the economy. Nazarbaev is getting up there in age and his recent appearances show him being a bit slower in speech than in his days of glory. I would imagine he could be out in the next two years easily.

The biggest issue...and it's not like the US hasn't underestimated or miscalculated before...is that Putin is no Brezhnev or Yeltsin. We are talking about a man fluent in languages, a man who studied martial arts, a man who plays sports, who hunts while having weapons and tradecraft training. He will use history to learn from mistakes of former leaders and will capitalize on everything he has available to form an optimal strategy. He surrounded himself with former KGB operatives. Not sure how many of you understand this...but most of the trusted government sponsored companies ( banks, gas, oil, railway) are controlled by former KGB/FSB employees and they're all throughout the government.

Putin is very much interested in leaving a shining legacy and he is not one to be fucking with...considering his background, network of operatives and available arsenal.

After the conversation with the organisation "Volya“…
… I have learned…
…that they succeeded to access Facilities in the project "TechCamp“…
…disguising as a team of IT specialists.

To their surprise, briefings on peculiarities of modern media were held.

American instructors explained how social networks and Internet technologies…
…can be used for targeted manipulation of public opinion…
…as well as to activate protest potential…
…to provoke violent unrest on the territory of Ukraine…
…Radicalisation of the population and triggering of infighting.

American instructors show examples of successful use of social networks…
…used to organise protests
…in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya.

"TechCamp" representatives currently hold conferences throughout Ukraine.

A total of five events have been held so far.

About 300 people were trained as operatives, which are now active throughout Ukraine.

The last conference "TechCamp" took place on 14 and 15 November 2013…
…in the Heart of Kiev on the territory of the US Embassy!

You tell me which country in the world would allow…
…a NGO to operate out of the US Embassy?

This is disrespectful to the Ukrainian government, and against the Ukrainian People!

I appeal to the Constitutional Authorities of Ukraine with the following question:

Is it conceivable that representatives of the US Embassy…
…which organise the "TechCamp" Conferences…
…misuse their diplomatic mission?

–– Let him speak ––

Carry On

UN Resolution of 21 December 1965 regulates…
…inadmissibility of interference in the internal affairs of a state…
…to protect its independence and its sovereignty…
…in accordance with paragraphs one, two and five.

I ask you to consider this as an official beseech…
…to pursue an investigation of this case

Thank You!

This is pretty sad. Zakarchenko talking to a captured conscript and his mother.  Telling her not to let her son come back and fight.  These people are so poor.  It is pathetic.  Anyone with money can get out of fighting.  It is a poor man's war like Vietnam.

The Javelins would be a very bad news for NR, as its todays best hand-held AT missile.

Of course its a double-edged sword, as it would permit the russian side to study it under mechanised warfare conditions and search for parades.

Also, comrade president Zakharchenko would almost certainly open a subscription among the workers and peasants of DNR and buy a regiment or three of fighter-bombers to go with his new airport...

The Kornet leaves the operator less exposed.  A guy can lie on his stomach in the bushes.  The Javelin is bigger and easier to spot.

The US can send whatever they want because more of those Ukrainian kids are being used, they are poor, they are lied to and treated like cannon fodder.  They are not stupid.  The whole thing like pretty much every war is sickening.   Wars benefit banksters and muntions/weapons companies.  Mass murder for profit.

Unfortunately we are watching the destruction of the Ukraine caused predominantly by US and to a lesser extent by Europe: Kiev's aggressions (relentless artillery firing upon living areas in Donzek and Lukhansk) will be met by counter attacks growing in strength and the occupied area shall likely grow slowly. The separatists are very motivated and the demands of Russia on the table: (1) federal structure of the Ukraine (2) territorial integrity of Ukraine bot peninsula will remain Russian soil (2) no NATO membership but (3) membership in the Eurasian Trade Union. All of this, I think, is better than a war.

Progressives believe that the primary thing is intention and results are secondary. They judge the actions of others as deliberately evil regardless of result...again "intention" being the issue. Bush was judged as evil, taking us to war for oil or Haliburton or whatever other vile intent that could be considered. Regardless of his actions or motivations, he did manage to assemble a coalition of other countries who at least tepidly supported his actions. Obama has pursued his agenda while destroying most coalitions. There is virtually no countries who trust or respect Obama. He is initiating war around the globe with no specific agenda. The one common thread that could popularly be used to unify, global Jihadism, has been categorically denied by Obama. He won't even use the terminology. While perpetrating war, the one thing he might legitimately claim to be the enemy he deliberately denies. Regardless of what one might think about radical Islam as a threat, why won't he use it? This is not about us versus them, it about us against each other.

What I see is deliberate chaos. This is not about war. This is the destruction of all alliances, all trust, all societal order.

Power through chaos.

What does a Ukrainian get when the current U.S. installed government is hemorrhaging conscripts by the hour for the past 9 months because they are either being killed by their own countrymen who have lost their jobs... lost their homes...  lost their families... either through the government outright annihilating them because they are taking up precious land "for other uses" or because of mutiny to a military they will not serve?...

Answer: They get imported ISIS that cut heads off!  One thing is for certain.  They won't be doing that much longer!

So this is the democracy that "mission accomplished" Commander-in-Chimp sponsors?!!!

My only wish at this point is that the American people come to their senses and import one of these ISIS lads (wouldn't be at all surprised if they come from the U.S.) and send them to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue -before it's too late for the rest of us!

It's not just "The Insurance Scam of the Century", but also the case of the Pentagon's "missing billions", forever conveniently "forgotten" as a result of the WTC-7 mysterious collapse (http://911research.wtc7.net/sept11/trillions.html).

Makes you wonder if all of the current MIC budget (official and "Back Office Deals") is actually spent on systems, or actually spent on such far more important things as lobbying / partying / bribes / personal pork-barrelling.

It has happened before (the "Phantom Legions" of the Roman Empire are a classic example of MIC outright theft, with no benefit even to the regular troops), and with the extent of corruption / cronyism in the US corridors of power (Civil AND Military) today, it would be very foolish to suggest that this wouldn't happen again, on a far larger scale.

What's the bets that many essential "MIL-Spec" componebts might actually be recycled, relabelled "Civilian-spec", or even downright fakes? - This is certainly food for consideration - http://www.ibtimes.com/why-pentagon-finding-counterfeit-chinese-electronics-critical-military-equipment-701214 (in 2012 . . . . .)

This war which causes huge bloodletting is abolutely unnecessary and will not end unless the Europeans reject the logic of the war and stop providing Ukraine with money. It would suffice to lift the sanctions against Russia to achieve an end of this disgraceful situation. As soon as Europe lifts the sanctions it will be difficult for the US to continue on its path of openly and covertly fuelling this war. Kiev enrolls 100.000 young men, gives them 4-6 weeks training and sends them to the east where they are slaughtered. Despicable.

With the proposal of the Obongo administration to send " military trainers " to Ukraine , Russia should declare a " No fly zone over Ukraine " so that the idiots in themilitary that go there to figth a war organized by their government , know that aerial support will not come and any intrudere will be shot down !

That will make it clear that the " military advisers" will not last long in Ukraine .

Here we are again, comments from Washington all refer to "Russian aggression in Ukraine" and the standup comedian 'Poroshenko' claims that Russia has invaded Ukraine at least 15 times and counting. Yet no evidence to support these claims has ever been provided. Not once.

The only irrefutable evidence that's come to light is the presence of English-speaking armed military personnel, thought to be American. No explanation is provided by Washinton of who these people are, so one can probably assume they are there by Washington's instruction or connivance.

People in the West need to wake up and demand a full explanation from their governments of WTF is going on in Ukraine and why we are involved at all.

Looks like deja vu all over again.

The US is running its foreign policy - arming Ukraine against Russia - according to local politics - sending some money to US arms manufacturers who happen to be campaign contributors. This is not going to end well.

They already did it.  Their artillery shells are being used on civilians.

All part of the plan to get the price of oil back up. Nothing like a long protracted war to send the price of crude soaring

"The one thing holding back the US is the question whether, in the words of the WSJ, "a decision to provide “defensive lethal arms” would prompt Mr. Putin to reduce his support for the pro-Moscow rebels or trigger him to ramp it up, further destabilizing the country." "

the WSJ is as f*ckin' stupid as the obummer gubment.

if this is truly the question holding the ussa back then there is absolutely no hope.

these people are just plain impossibly stupid.

any 5 yr old (non ussa) can answer this question.

When it comes to foreign policy, Russia plays chess, the USA plays Poker and obama plays chutes and ladders. What happened in Afghanistan (Regan era not Bush2 era) is now happening in the Ukraine. (Whether Europe is involved I can't say, although they'd be wise to do more than focus on the circus in Greece).

NATO (other than Britain) exists in name only. The majority of the other participants never contributed more than enough to man a HQ during joint exercises, and they've double-slotted units assigned to NATO to to other TFs. (One reason they're loathe to get involved with any military endeavor that does't involve the USA in the lead). ISAF = I stayed at the FOB or I saw Americans fighting.

Oh and "Joos".
