Greece Refuses To Back Down: "Government Will Do As Promised" Tsipras Says

Tyler Durden's picture

With an increasingly vitriolic tone, the new Greek government has come out swinging today with leader Alexis Tsipras making it clear that he will implement the election pledges the people of Greece voted for:

  • A NEW GREEK GOVT WILL BARGAIN TOUGH, AND PUT A FINAL END TO THE TROIKA AND ITS POLICIES
  • WE MANAGED TO DECONSTRUCT THE EUROPEAN STATUS QUO THAT WANTS MORE AUSTERITY AND LESS DEMOCRACY

It took one week, Tsipras chides, to get European leaders to talk about the real problems and Greece will negotiate hard to "put an end to Troika."

Tsipras adds:

  • *GREECE'S TSIPRAS SAYS GREEK PEOPLE WRITING HISTORY, DETERMINED
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS WILL NOT ALLOW FIRESALE OF NATIONAL WEALTH
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS NEW GOVT WILL NEGOTIATE HARD, PUT AN END TO TROIKA
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT TO PRESENT ITS OWN ROADMAP TO EXIT CRISIS
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS ONLY TOOK ONE WEEK TO CHANGE EU DISCUSSION AGENDA
  • *TSIPRAS: TOOK ONE WEEK TO GET EU TO TALK ABOUT REAL PROBLEMS
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS WILL IMPLEMENT ELECTION CAMPAIGN PLEDGES
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT DOESN'T THREATEN BALANCE IN EUROPE
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT DETERMINED TO OVERHAUL PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT HAS CONCRETE, STRATEGIC NEGOTIATION PLAN
  • *TSIPRAS: GOVT PRESENTED ITS PLAN TO CREDITORS, GAINED ALLIES
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS WAITING WITH GREAT INTEREST FOR GERMAN PROPOSALS
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT COMMITTED TO EU RULES, WILL RESPECT THEM
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS NOT AIMING TO CREATE NEW DIVIDE IN EUROPE
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS AUSTERITY IS NOT A EUROPEAN UNION RULE

And then the ECB chimes in...

  • *KNOT SAYS ECB DOESN'T SEE PROOF THAT GREEK PROGRAM ON TRACK

*  *  *

And Tsipras counters...

  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GOVT GUARANTEES GREEK BANK SYSTEM DEPOSITS SAFE

"We will make the impossible, possible to turn things around in Greece"

*  *  *

  • *TSIPRAS SAYS WE NEED TO REBUILD COUNTRY FROM THE BEGINNING
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GREEK, EUROPEAN DEMOCRACY CANNOT BE BLACKMAILED

Chicken continues...

Short of WWIII, there will be no "getting out" of the EU, as this is the very crisis TPTB have waited for so long to occur. This will be used to create the political mandate of further fiscal integration that could not be achieved at the ballot box.

Tsipras wants to reform the EU, not destroy it, and so do a whole host of other political movers and shakers. He is merely the grain of sand that will someday turn into a pearl.

Nah, all they have to do is make some printing plates for the new drachma and show them to the Germans. If that fails to impress, then they can start printing drachma and show them the big piles of money to replace the euro in Greece. And if that still fails to impress. then default on all euro obligations.

Imports will virtually cease for a while, and it will hurt, but it will be done and is where all this has to go anyway because Greece can never pay all that money back.

Which is worse - bankers or terrorists's picture

So here's your roadmap:

(1) Liberally and infinitely print electronic euros from Greece, without the ECB's approval. Fund up Greek banks. Crash the EURUSD.

(2) FIVE Russian naval bases with a 10,000 year lease

(3) Use liberally printed euros to fund social programs and purchase as much physical gold as one can, storing it in the Greek Central Bank vault.

(4) See you later NATO.

(5) Russian oil and gas pipelines across Greece everywhere you look. They could even re-name Greece "Pipeline".

(6) Greece leaves the borders lightly defended and lets in AS MANY IMMIGRANTS AS POSSIBLE just to piss of Western Europe. Build a Greek Statue of Liberty in Athens' harbor just to welcome all the illegal Turkish and Africans to Greece. Then, use the liberally printed euros to buy them free plane tickets and fly them to Benelux, France and Germany. A 100 million Turks and a billion Africans could fit into Benelux, France and Germany's borders, no?

While I'd absolutely love to see that plan in action, you'd see the Greek Parliament suffer the worst terrorist attack in history.  NATO would move in to secure the nation from anarchy, and it would shortly be turned into a protectorate of the EU.

I'm just amazed they let the dialogue get this far without a scooter riding gunman taking out a few of them to be honest.  However it does distract nicely from Ukraine.

"protectorate of the EU"

Please kindly explain how Greece is not currently a protectorate of the EU. The current state of Greece is a colony if there ever was such a thing. The next step lower would be the Belgain Congo or Haiti right before its slave rebellion.

Last I heard EU troops aren't lining people up in Greece and executing them.  Ignorance of history is astounding here, even if in jest.  My belief is that's the next step - direct control and annexation.  Greeks may or may not resist, but my hope is they do.  Socialism does odd things to a society.

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 13:09 | 5747820 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

But would the National Socialists have been any less bad if they hadn't lined people up in Greece and executed them?  With the paradigm shift from National Socialism to Extra-National Socialism/Corpratocracy they now have to build from scratch (or more accurately buy existing) shock troops.  The Nazi's had a certain terror infrastructure and capacity within their own political party (just as the today's troglodyte Nationalist parties often do), which was effectively coupled with certain institutions of State they seized.  but the corpratists' MO isn't single-Party hegemony, or even single Nation-State hegemony, and they are installing themselves and building capacity within the bureaucracy, not the political parties- as it is more publicly palatable and cost effective for them to buy off large "moderate" parties than smaller "fringe" parties.

They have read Orwell and Huxley too (among others), and consequently velvet-lined concentration camps are in vogue now.

Some of this may be in jest, and there is always ignorance when "masses" are involved (even at ZH), but there is also a lot of subtlety and valid inference (even if we skip the footnotes entirely and argue with simple bullet points instead of paragraphs).

After all, if the next step is "direct control and annexation", what were the previous steps? and why were they significant? and would should have been done to stop them?  I think I've seen this game somewhere before, and it usually begins with "If you could go back in time..."  Rinse, Repeat.

Greece goes back to living within its limited means. Witdraws from the EU, greeks go back to farms and start making some products rather than importing everything?

I've always been fascinated how weak hands can hold more power than the strong when the strong has to pretend to uphold whatever fiction that originally empowered them. The strong side is constrained, having everything to lose, while the weak side is free to do whatever, having nothing left to lose.

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 10:48 | 5747139 Cognitive Dissonance
Cognitive Dissonance's picture

This is where the art of psyops comes in to play. Convince the strong they are weak and they will never exercise their strength. The actual weak entity wins and never needs to expose their true weakness.

When playing poker if you are going to bluff you must first be willing and able to carry out your bluff all the way to the end. Otherwise don't even try because failure will crush you. If you do carry it to the end, even if you lose, you earn the respect of the other players and remain in the game.

Players are more likely to eat the weak first. And often this means the perception of who is weak (on both sides) rather than the actual weak.

Cog, I don't disagree with you about staying at the table. However, IF Greece were to default then, I believe, is when the real negotiations would start. I believe a default would most closely look like Birmingham, AL sewer system or GM. By that I mean the entity lives on ; as opposed to an Enron. But what do I know, I'm just a old dog.

- For Greece it's like souk bargaining. Posturing is part of getting a good deal.

- For Northern Europe it's "let's get it over with".  "Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende."

Greece is in unchartered waters.    They can't forgive the debts without exposing the emperor (EU) and even if they forgive the debts or restructure or whatever in the hell they want to call it, Greece has only the Drachma to return to and it's backed by what?    Oh yeah, the full faith and credit of a Government that just repudiated billions in outstanding debt and said sayonara to the EU.    What else have you got?   Russian backing, yeah, that's worth a lot.    Time to start putting your best babes and studs on the market and throw in a villa or two for the event, hint that they are demigods and good breeding stock

Thanks for the link ! I found this part particularly interesting (below). Maybe Greece can be renamed "New Wallonia- the EU Sequel"!

<< For the moment, Greece leads the continental left within the EU structure. No country is going anywhere, especially Greece. “What the new Greek government wants is more bailout money and more transfers,” says Prof. Hanke. He says a poll of Greeks shows 75% want to stay within the Eurozone. They know where the money is, and the future.

And so now the endless bickering and brinkmanship begin. New negotiations will pit Mr. Tsipras as the leading voice, at least for now, of the leftist opposition in a new Europe-wide fight over the sharing of resources and redistribution of wealth.

Mr. Tsipras does not want out of Europe or out of the euro. He wants another Europe. What he wants, he has said, is “a Europe of peace, Democracy and growth.” What he does not want is the “neo-liberal Europe of [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel,” Or, as he put it, “We are the true alternative of Angela Merkel’s Europe.” >>

Many commentors here seem to think that Greece is all alone in the world, when in reality, it has the bulk of the world's nations to turn to. The Chinese and Russians in particular are ready to step in to assist the moment that Greece divorces itself from the EU officially. Remember, Greece has ports, shipping and a strong agricultural sector. It's not without resources and not without economic leverage in spite of all the EU hype screeching about what a disaster it would be for Greece to leave the EU. All that is just grand kabuki theater, boys and girls. Just enjoy the show for a preview of the world to come.
