Putin Invites Tsipras To Visit Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

While Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis' comments that "we will never ask for financial assistance in Moscow," which notably does not deny acceptance of aid if offered, and Greek Minister of Energy Panagiotis Lafazanis adding that Athens opposes the embargo imposed on Moscow, "we have no disagreement with Russia and the Russian people," it is perhaps not surprising that, as Vedemosti reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with the new Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras, congratulated him on taking office, and invited him to Russia.

As ANA reports,

The situation in Ukraine and other international issues, among them, “the South Stream and Turkish Stream pipeline projects, dominated a telephone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras earlier on Thursday, the Kremlin announced.

Putin invited Tsipras to visit Moscow on May 9 when celebrations will take place, commemorating the peoples' victory over fascism. On his part, the Greek prime minister underlined the importance he attributes to the fight against Nazism, expressing his intention to accept the invitation.

The Russian leader's top foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said that Putin congratulated Tsipras on his victory in last month's general elections and on the assumption of his duties as the new prime minister of Greece.

The discussion was very warm and constructive, he said, noting that President Putin invited Tsipras to Russia. He also said that the will for a more active development of bilateral relations was reaffirmed.

The Russian ministers of foreign affairs and defence have already invited their Greek counterparts to visit Moscow.

Meanwhile, as ekathimerini reports, Obama is worried about the pivot...

The United States has urged Greece to work closely with its European partners and the International Monetary Fund, a senior American official said late on Wednesday.

“We do believe that in the case of Greece it is very important for the Greek government to work cooperatively with its European colleagues, as well as with the IMF. And we have advised it to do so, and we are hopeful that these conversations are now moving to a place with some cooperation and mutual understanding.” noted the official during a conference call regarding US Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Belgium and Germany which begins on Thursday.

The comments followed President Obama’s recent remarks with regard to austerity in Greece, in which he argued that countries could not go on being “squeezed.”

And Russia reiterates its willingness to aid Greece financially...

Tsipras has vehemently ruled out asking Russia for money. However, he’s never said anything about the BRICS Bank.

Besides, a couple of days ago China, India, and Russia met in Beijing, and there was not a single chirp anywhere about the meeting’s agenda. Something tells me that helping newly-defaulted-Greece WAS being discussed there.

So why does Greece need money? Seems to me that they issue drachma, and push the reset on all debt that other countries think they owe.

I think there is some tourism and olives, and the Greeks need to get serious about upping their revenue and moving forward living within their means.

But dumping their debt to Germany...ehem the EU should do a lot to make them squeeky clean.

Iceland seems to be doing okay at this point. How about leverage their model?

And don't forget that the proposed gas pipeline from Qatar through Syria into Europe has to go through Greece. My prodiction is that if Greece ditches the EU and NATO and cozies up to Russia ISIS will disappear like a bad dream.

ALL proposed pipelines (to the EU) flow through Turkey (which is pivoting to Russia) and in order to reach the EU they then need to flow through Greece (which is being courted by Russia), since Bulgaria "chose poorly".  Russia doesn't even need to cough up cold limp overvalued USD or EUR fiat for Greek investment - the western bankers and oilmen will take care of that.  But in order to pull this off- the Greeks would have to actually go after corruption and step up their efficiency game if they want a seat at the table (and to postpone the inevitable).

The level of game in Brussels is almost as laughable as at Obozo's house.

Brilliant imagery, although it took me awhile to identify Pepe Grillo (For a horrible couple of minutes, I thought he was that Isreali oligarch Igor Kolomoisky) and Putin makes the perfect Lee Van Cleef. Did I tell you I'm a fan of Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns? So it was quite a treat.

There's a lot of cynics here driven mostly by disinformation about Syriza, but I'm sure I'll be forgiven for making the over-simplified assertion that what these men are taking on, against huge odds, is ultimately Goldman Sachs which from 1998 to 2009 was instrumental in making Greece into the broken beggardom it is today. Cynical is good, but sometimes in rare cases hope is better and I am personally hoping these men will bring the filthy disgusting insane system of debt-as-assets, corruption and fraud down into the ground. Pivoting the EU away from the crazy machinations of the State Dept is a good start.

Greece owns about 112 tons of gold, of which 40-odd percent is maintained inside the country (as far as anyone knows).  the rest, well, it's out there, somewhere, and I wouldn't put it past IMF or ECB just simply moving it into their own accounts, seizing it as collateral.

Buying an asset that loses value is never prudent.  God I hope you're not a financial advisor.  If you want insurance pay off the mortgage and stock up on supplies.  Gold won't help you a bit.

none of those countries have the largest military in history, or a reserve currency.  And gold didn't do them a bit of good because they had to sell it to pay their debts.

It's the same on a personal level, if you own your home, have no debts, and have some assets and supplies, then gold can be provide a final measure of insurance and comfort.  Anyone paying a mortgage and sitting on PM's is losing money on two assets at once.

As far my missing the "intent and origin" of ZH, I've been here a for a while, and my feeling is that blind allegiance to the views expressed here would make us the same "sheep" we like to poke fun at.  ZH is great, but not infallible, and I think pointing out bad advice doesn't make me any less a ZH'r, whatever the hell that means.  I wouldn't be part of any club that would have me as a member.

If they had no other debts, yes.  If, like most people they had mortgages and other debts, gold would have been just another way to pay off debt, and a crappy one given the price action.  I guess me explaining the same thing over and over isn't working.  Good luck to you as well my friend.

I'm talking about paying mortgages because if your economy crashes, you still have to pay your mortgage.  Gold will be liquidated.  If you paid off your mortgage and have other assets and supplies you're much better off, so my point is that the best insurance/safety/long term trade is paying off all your debts, not buying gold.  Once that's done, then gold is good to have.  And i think my assumption is fair that very few people who own gold also have no debts, thus are making a bad decision.

Also, 20% per year for ten years is picking points on the graph.  We could also say that in the last 4 years it's been down 30-40%.  If you look at gold along with any other major commodity in the last 50 years, the massive upswing over the last decade is more an anomaly than a trend.

You're clearly a smart guy, but I don't think you understand the transient nature of things like a large military and holding a reserve currency. There comes a point in time when these things become an insupportable liability; that time is now. As I write your loony tune govt is proposing to ship arms to the Ukes, arms paid for with money that does not exist to prop up a regime that is both bankrupt and lacks any legitimacy. Meanwhile the French and the Germans are going to talk to  Poroshenko and Putin, they've already seen Poroshenko and I can tell you now that their discussions did not go well, principally because Poroshenko is waiting for the US cavalry to arrive. Putin meanwhile will welcome Merkel and Hollande and whilst they may not agree, this is already a PR coup for Putin, because Merkel and Hollande are sidelining Obozo. Putin and his team are meanwhile extending a friendly greeting to the Greeks, undoubtedly with the South Pipeline in the frame. This is one of the classic chess moves that Team Putin play so well, whilst the NeoCONS and Obozo wander onto the board, shit all over it and suffocate in their own wastes. China is in this mix somewhere and it's position is far from clear, but by any calculation, it's long term interests lock it on to Russian resources. As it is the US will fight to the last Ukrainian, but long before then, the remaininbg Ukesd will see they've been conned and Poroshenko and by implication, Obozo and the entire US circus will be toast. Metaphorically speaking you understand.

I think your analysis is spot-on, but I have no illusions that the US cares about Ukraine at all, and is well aware of the transient nature of both reserve status and military hegemony.  I think they'd gladly sacrifice Ukraine to start a war with Putin, which is what it looks like they're doing.  Europe sees this and is trying to get Putin to calm down by sending Merkel/Hollande before the US manages to start WW3.  And we have every reason to, becuase as you said, empires fade, and it's best to act from a position of strength (while we still have it).  The soviet union lost the cold war without the US firing a shot.  Obama is trying to pull the same trick but Putin is no Gorbachev.  The European mission is one of self preservation because Europe knows if war comes, it will be in the same a position Ukraine is in now, a big proxy-war hellhole.

Are you confusing investment advice for speculation advice?

You invest for the long haul (gold).

You speculate for quick profits (btfd).

If you went all in on gold thinking you were gonna turn a quick fortune then the blame is squarely on you.  Grow up and take some responsibility.

Why?  I went all in on gold at 1100, then got out at 1650.  I speculated, treated gold like any other investment, turned a profit, and moved on.  What's wrong with that?

Investing for "the long haul" is a common excuse for having lost money.

You need to recognize the difference between a speculative investment and insurance (as do they).

If you are lucky, you'll outlive the security it provides. If not, you'll be in far better shape than those finacialists you hang around.

The problem with a lot of our thinking is that we still have to live in the world that we know is a sham.  If all you do is plan for beans, bullion, and bullets, you MAY end up living in a trailer in the woods.  We need to make sure we're prepared, but we ALSO need to make sure we're taking advantage of the system we live in.  If the house of cards manages to survive longer than we expect, it will pay to play the game, as much as it galls most of us.

But the ECB DOES want to "bailout again" and precisely what the Greeks don't want. But I otherwise agree that Greece most definately holds all the cards -- and now the people in Italy and Spain, etc. know that they hold the same hand.

As the euro falls apart, watch how the process pushes the dollar into the stratosphere, thus forcing the sudden demise of the dollar as well..

This is about the Eastern Church (Orthodox).  Russia wants to destroy the West and takes its place as the 3rd Roman Empire.  Crimea is the the ancient birthplace (where it first arrived) of Christianity in the Russias and Kiev was its ancient Capital.  Putin is using history and the Eastern Church to achieve his goals. His adviser Alexander Dugin, the modern day Rasputin is the brains behind this theological plan.  Greece is of the Eastern Church and is a natural part of Putin/Dugin's plan while simultaneously undermining the West .

I wanted to thank you personally for the things you imparted in your CNN interview last Sunday that the austerity measures being imposed by the EU are too harsh and we need to come to more equitable measures and compromise in order to repay some of the debt that is still in question.

I have great news for you sir.  President Putin has announced that he will be facilitating our new government with financial aid to help expedite those payments to the EU governing body which should urge on a speedy resolution to the problem don't you think?...

And in the spirit of this new international cooperation I want you to be put on notice that you will be removing your military bases and returning the land and other properties you have used over several decades to our government within 120 days!

I thank you sir and wish you the best of luck as you finish your remaining days in the "White House"!

What if the Greeks "rublized" their economy? The ruble may be weak, but it would be stronger than any possible drachma that might be issued. It would also would be no more a "foreign" money than the euro if Greece goes out of the EU.

The Russians can freely print up as many rubles as they like for physical delivery -- and the west would be none the wiser until that delivery of currency were received and distributed to the banks.
