Russia Deploys Nuclear ICBM Launchers On Combat Patrol

Tyler Durden's picture

Perhaps it is a coincidence that a day before John Kerry's arrival in Kiev (a visit which "coincided" with a 35% devaluation of the local currency) where among other things the US statesman discussed the possibility of official (as opposed to unofficial) deliveries of US "lethal support" to the civil war torn and now hyperinflation country, that Russia decided to put its nuclear ICBMs on combat patrol missions in various Russian regions. Specifically, according to Tass, "About 700 units of military equipment, including launchers are deployed in the positioning areas in the Tver, Ivanovo, Kirov, Irkutsk regions, as well as in Altai Territory and the Mari El republic."

More:

The Topol, Topol-M and Yars mobile ballistic missile launchers have been put on combat patrol mission in six Russian regions, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman for Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) Colonel Igor Yegorov said on Wednesday.

"The Topol, Topol-M and Yars mobile launchers are drilling combat duty tasks in six regions of the country with extended combat patrolling time. About 700 units of military equipment, including launchers are deployed in the positioning areas in the Tver, Ivanovo, Kirov, Irkutsk regions, as well as in Altai Territory and the Mari El republic," Yegorov said.

According to him, the time of winter combat patrolling has been extended to nearly a month this year. "This means that each missile regiment will spend about 60 days per year on combat patrolling routes," he said.

Topol is a ground-based mobile strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system. The Topol-M ICBM system belongs to the fifth generation of strategic missiles. The three-stage solid-propelled single warhead missile has a silo and mobile version. Yars is a solid-propelled mobile and silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile with multiple warhead.

Now all that is needed is for Emmett Fitz-Hume and Austin Millbarge to show up and to confirm the old saying that "a weapon unused is a useless weapon", especially if said weapon belongs to Northrop Grumman, Lockheed or General Dynamics.

My uncle worked at Los Alamos, he insists that even if the nukes are functional, the odds of firing them off completely as planned are right around 60-70%.  Back then it was about 30%.  He said "you don't take a scientific instrument with thousandth of an inch tolerances that can irradiate a city and give it to 2 high school dropouts and a history major".    I always liked his humor.

Ukraine video updates: DPR says Ukraine planning terror attack in Debaltsevo

"...In the clip below, DPR Deputy of Defense Eduard Basurin announces plans for a Ukrainian 'false flag' in the region of Debaltsevo sometime in the next few days, to coincide with the Munich Security Conference on 6-8 February (this weekend)..."

"[eng subs] Ukraine prepares a terrorist attack in Debaltsevo"

[Transcript of eng subs follows verbatum]

[Deputy of Defense Basurin speaking] First of all I would like to make an announcement.

The Donetsk People's Republic leadership has evidences of preparations for the provocation against the peaceful civilians in Debaltsevo planned on the eve of Munich Security Conference on 6-8 February, being conducted by the Ukrainian military command. In order to accomplish this, a bus evacuating people from Debaltsevo area is planned to be destroyed with artillery fire of one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units in the next few days.

We received this info today, in result of the interrogation of the senior lieutenant Marchenko Alexandr Sergeyevich, who was serving in the military unit number 0676, 25th territorial defense battalion "Kievskaya Rus" who surrendered to the DPR army squad on February 2nd in the Redkodub settlement area.

Ukrainian leadership plans to spread the fact shelling and deaths of civilians in Ukrainian and international mass media, to be used on Munich Security Conference in puropse of descrediting the Donetsk People's Republic with following recognition of it as a terrorist organization by world community.

In a world of 24/7 propoganda, the truth is often in plain sight - drowned in a sea of "noise."

Who the hell knows who has what.  Reality is that everyone is on a "spectrum" somewhere.  "Normal" being a relative term.  And, I think it is fairly well demonstrated that in our times most who rise to supreme politcal power are in fact quite different than the general population.  High percentage of sociopaths, narcissists, etc.

(You watch too much Fox news)

First, the city you probably mean is not in Mauretania. It is called "Mariupol"

Second, there is no city of one million "wiped". What exactly do you refer to?

Third, this area of Ukraine is inhabited predominantly by Russians, just like DPR, LPR, Bessarabia, Dombass

Fourth, these Russians are pissed of that the president they elected democratically got ousted un-demoratically (and instead of waiting to get genocided by the Kiev Nazis prefer taking things in their own hands)

Fifiz, the battle started with the attack by the "forces" of the national Ukrainian army

Pyatt: "No, all production goes to Russia. The only factory that is fully functional is in Russia."

Kerry: "Well, actually we don't need the support of these useful idiots any longer. Keep these fools fighting in the east until this shitplace is completely destroyed. This will weaken the Russians".

Nuland: "Ok, fuck the EU".

If war is the only option, then I'd rather have a nice, quaint civil war where it is brother against brother instead of a nuclear war.  At least the survivors of a civil war wouldn't have to worry about the uptake of radioisotopes by their crops.  And if war isn't their only option, they sure are doing a bangup job of stumbling towards one.

Crisis in Ukraine could trigger nuclear war, warns Gorbachev

The former Russian leader warns that Moscow does not trust the West, and the West does not trust Moscow

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader, has warned that the world is at risk of a “nuclear war” because of the tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine.

In an interview with the German magazine Spiegel, Mr Gorbachev said that if either side lost its nerve in the current stand-off, it could lead to nuclear war, and spoke of his fears that the world “will not survive the next few years”.

“I actually see all the signs of a new Cold War,” Mr Gorbachev said. “It could all blow up at any moment if we don’t take action. The loss of confidence is catastrophic. Moscow does not believe the West, and the West does not believe Moscow.”

NATO meeting in Brussels heightens danger of war with Russia

By Johannes Stern
5 February 2015

NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels today to consolidate the military alliance against Russia, increasing the risk of a direct military confrontation between nuclear-armed powers.

NATO sources have revealed plans to establish a long-term presence in Eastern Europe, according to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS). So-called NATO “Force Integration Units” will be established in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. There are also plans to deploy such a unit in Hungary at a later time.

Mobile truck mounted ICBMs were designed and built as a defense against First Strike attacks by Russia's potential enemies. Nuclear missile silos can be targeted, mobile trucks that change postion every night and go into cover by day are in no way a sure bet to be killed in a first strike.

This is "non-News" as Russia must and always does, exercise their mobile rocket forces. It is harmless and is carried out on their own soil. But it is meant as a reminder to the New World Order Elites that should the Neocons and Zionists in Washington push their luck too far, the world will end, and all the Zionists and Neocons will evaporate at the same rate as we citizens and taxpayers.

I grew up under this Cold War missile game. The kind both the  USA and USSR considered their most important weapons, and both still do. Russia has spent big to launch new Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines, and invested in Attack Subs and Surface ASW vessels to protect the waters their Missile Subs operate in.

We are back to 1975 with both sides on hair trigger nuclear alert with thusands of missiles ready to go in an instant. This is the wrold our elites have created for us, as I have hardly met any American or Russian who wants to live under this threat. It is our 1% who bring this to us, and give us no choice.

Many people here like Element and Jack Burton know more about military hardware, strategies, etc than myself, but my assessment is that the situation is quite different now.

During  the last cold war, MAD was somewhat in play although I think the situation was far more devious and complex than advertised. The west had the great lever of finance and a free society that was creating lots of wealth. The Soviets were at a great disadvantage with a weaker economy and a crappy society. The west benefited from time to build up further, while the Soviet side was not in a position for a win.

Now, the west has cut nuclear stockpiles and the economies around the world are on the rocks. Russia, as I understand it, has more nukes than the rest of the world combined. But they also know that NWO plans are very far advanced and they will be extinguished by that roller coaster if they succumb. Thus, I do not think all this posturing means nothing. My perception is that the world is closer to disaster than it was 40-50 years ago. None of the big players - west, Russia, China - is going to give in and I don't think detente can last for too many more years.

In terms of active warheads, Russia does have more than the US, but not so many more st to give it any real advantage in a nuclear exchange.  In terms of inactive warheads, that number is constantly changing, but many of them would require significant maintenance to bring back to ready status.  We're decommissioning many of them, which is fine by me.  At the height of the cold war, both sides had tens of thousands of warheads.  Now we're down to a few thousand active warheads, and the Russians are in the same boat.  Warheads cost a lot to maintain, and a few thousand is still more than enough to assure destruction of anybody.

As for MAD, I don't think that the assholes running this show have a clue as to what a nuclear bomb will really do.  We wouldn't use the panzy devices like Fat Man and Little Boy these days either.  Instead of 15 or 20kt, we would be using warheads more like 300kt-475kt.  The Russians have upgraded their arsenal since the collapse of the USSR.  It turns out that once you get to a certain point, twice the yield does not do twice the damage, but it costs at least twice as much to build and maintain.  Going to smaller warheads is more cost effective and you can still do the same damage.  That means no more 20MT monsters in the Russian missiles.  They're down around 550kt and smaller now, with accuracy that the Russians claim is roughly on par with the US missiles. Go back and look at the films and pictures of Nagasaki and Hiroshima to put that into perspective.

All in all, it doesn't matter if our missiles are going to hit 50M closer to the target, it doesn't matter if the Russian warheads are on average 75kt bigger and it doesn't matter if the Russians have 1000 or 1500 more warheads deployed.  Both sides would be incomprehensibly fucked once those things started flying.

At least I know where the targets are in my area and know what the prevailing winds typically do so that I have an idea of where not to be if it does happen.  Kirtland AFB, which has the AF Research Labs, Sandia National Labs and the Kirtland Underground Munitions Storage Complex (lots of nukes in there) are the biggest ones.  Then there is Los Alamos National Labs up north, and then Holloman AFB and Canon AFB and possibly the White Sands Missile Range.  It would be somewhat ironic if the WSMR got hit, considering that is where the Trinity Site is.

Current yeids for nuclear weapons are measured in MT (megatons) versus KT (kilotons).   The nuclear weapons used on Japan were 13-22kt, the current arsenal yeilds anywhere from 475kt for MIRVed payloads to 25-50MT region killers.

Both sides have them.  IIRC, the Minuteman IIIs carry three warheads and, while deployed with 6 warheads, the Trident IIs can carry up to 12 or 14.  The Russians have similar capacities on their missiles, though they're actively developing newer missiles and warheads and we're not, so they have more options.

Interesting -Thanks. I need to do some looking at the numbers sometime.

One factor that is said, but just as soon forgotten, is the secondary effects due to nuclear power plant failures. If there is any kind of big disruption (like war), the plants run out of backup power and many go Fukushima. Then the measure is not kT of yield, but tons of volatilized waste. Deadly stuff.

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 16:19 | 5748829 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

We don't have the multi-megaton bombs like we used to.  Neither does Russia.  The mainstay of the US arsenal is the W88 on the Trident IIs at 475kt and the W87s on the Minuteman IIIs at 300kts.  We no longer have the large multimegaton bombs in active service, if at all.  The B83 is the largest active bomb in the US arsenal at 1.2MT.

The largest the Soviets ever set off was the Tsar Bomba at 50MT, though it would have been 100MT had they used depleated urainium to clad the secondary and tertiary stages instead of lead.  That bomb was so big that it didn't even fit inside the bomber, making it very impractical from a  delivery standpoint.  It was just the USSR making a point.  Again, they have moved away from the large multimegaton devices themselves.  The SS18s no longer are tipped with a single 20MT warhead.  They are on their way to being decommissioned, but they're MIRVed with warheads in the hundreds of kilotons these days.  There is no need to spend 10x as much for a single 20MT warhead when 3 500KT warheads will do the same amount of damage for much cheaper.

Look up the current arsenals of both countries.  The designations and yields are anything but secret.

The B53 Y1 (9MT) was due for decomm in 2006-2007ish, but I'd heard that was put on hold.  Was rumor, not sure either way.   There's also a B53 Y2 that "fell off the books" with a yield of 9MT, no clear decomm date for that one.

Edit:   I love in between 2 nuclear power stations, one located about 3 to 5 miles away as the crow flies.   Yeild won't be an issue for me.  :/

The information war tends to obscure things.

One of two things is likely true, if the thing is actually built, either 1) it's the world's most expensive cod piece (if ever used) or 2) it is not actually intended to deliver ICMS to a country on another continent on planet Earth.

Redneck sorry for shattering your dreams .

Russia's 100 Ton Sarmat Missile To Enter Service In 2020, Test Launch In 2017 .

The Sarmat could deliver up to 10 heavy nuclear warheads or 15 medium warheads at targets up to 6,200 miles away, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

The missile would carry the warheads into suborbital flight, at which point they would separate and hit independent targets.

The new intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat would be capable of overcoming almost any missile defense system. Russia's new missile is a response to the American Prompt Global Strike.

The missile could deliver more than 15 medium warheads if it has a capacity of 10 tons - also called concentration risk.  10 tons of payload capacity is for bragging rights in the public press, not impressing nuclear counterparts (or something else.. perhaps evacuating Vlad and his buddies from Mount Yamantau like Dr. Evil in the video - there were several layers to the metaphor and joke) - you might as well slap a bunch of nuclear warheads on an Atlas V rocket and upgrade the steering.  The liquid fuel should provide more thrust and maneuverability, but at 100 tons that fucker is chained to a silo thousands of miles away from its target providing a much larger interception window than sea or launched devices, and originating from a fixed and known launch site that is already targeted by the US for destruction in any first strike.

Firstly its launch site is not known to anyone outside Russia and who said it will remain fixed ?  Mind you their missile shield is effective enough to shoot your icbms ." US targetting russia's nuclear site " . But the moment US launches its nukes to destroy those sites , do you expect russia to stand still ? They will fire those nukes well before usa nukes could reach boost phase .

You didn't notice they have already made usa missile shield evading nukes . Sarmat is based on that only . Missile shield means whether its Thaad or gmd or aegis those modernised missiles will evade it becasue you can't detect their path unlike american and russian earlier nukes . That 100 tonn fucker in boost phase will drop all its major weight . Don't you fret about that ;)

The class of ICBM is pretty much based on throw weight... how much payload in kgs that can be delivered x thousand kilometres.

As such the total weight of the missile is not so important as its throw weight... just off the top of my head TOPOL is about 1.5 tons while the SS-18 is something like 8 tons.

This new missile might only be 100 tons in weight, but with new rocket engines, new fuels, new much lighter electronics with much more precise control systems, plus of course lighter and stronger materials to make the actual missile from will all reduce weight and increase performance. It is like building a race car... you make the structure as light but strong as possible, and then you put the biggest motor you can shoehorn in.... and take it from there.

Liquid propellents are generally more powerful than solid propellents, with cryogenic liquids using hydrogen and oxygen being the most powerful of all, but are not storable on the missile and generally used for rockets for launching satellites and deep space missions.
