Shunned Greece Agrees To Boost Economic Cooperation With Russia
It's been an odd few days for Greece's new PM Alexis Tsipras. From being lambasted by Jeroen Dijsselbloem, shunned by Angela Merkel's henchmen, holding hands with Jean-Claude Juncker, and losing a key funding channel from Mario Draghi; Tsipras' anti-austerity platform has been 'supported' by Barack Obama and he has been invited for a visit to Russia by Vladimir Putin, and reminded that Russia is willing (and able) to provide financial aid if asked by finance minister Anton Siluanov. So headlines this evening from ekathimerini should not be entirely surprising that Putin and Tsipras have agreed to boost cooperation in the economy and energy, tourism, culture and transport sectors; and discussed the possible creation of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe via Turkey and Greece.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday agreed to boost bilateral ties in a telephone conversation during which the latter invited the new Greek premier to an event in Moscow in May to mark the victory over Nazism.
The two men agreed to boost cooperation in the economy and energy, tourism, culture and transport sectors. They also agreed on the need to “secure peace and stability in Ukraine,” according to a statement from Tsipras’s office. Putin expressed satisfaction at Greece’s stance at a recent summit in Brussels where Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias conveyed concerns over the prospect of additional sanctions against Russia over Ukraine.
Sources rebuffed rumors about financial support for Greece from Russia, noting that the government was looking toward its European partners for support. The two men also discussed the possible creation of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe via Turkey and Greece.
Meanwhile Defense Minister Panos Kammenos responded to comments by his German peer Ursula von der Leyen, according to which Greece was jeopardizing its position in NATO with its stance vis-a-vis Russia. Kammenos called her comments “unacceptable and extortionate,” noting “Greece was always on the side of the Allies when they pushed back German occupation troops.”

The New York Times ran a story the other day rumored to be an administration "floater" suggesting Obama wants to unwind the Ukrainian and Russian confrontations.
The new plan now is to go back to Russia's first proposal to establish eastern Ukrainian autonomous regions in Donetsk and Luhansk and probably try to push for him to abandon Assad in exchange for the lifting of sanctions and allowing oil prices to rise again.

Putin going for the EU's soft underbelly, but with cooperation and commerce rather than violence, is a masterstroke.
There are a lot - I mean a lot - of Russian domestic policies I disagree with, as a dyed-in-the-wool social liberal and economic conservative. But when it comes to foreign policy, Putin is, dare I steal the phrase, the least dirty shirt of anybody on the international stage.
EDIT: A quick Google search is making me reconsider the definition of social liberalism. Suffice it to say, I think gays should be free of state or private violence to gay; psychonauts should be free of state and private violence to non-violently explore their minds; and the State should just generally mind its own business, which is non-aggressive foreign policy and punishing legitimate criminals for legitimate crimes.

If they build a pipeline through Greece and Turkey, it could have a few lasting effects.
1) Improving relations between Greece and Turkey stabilizing the region a bit more.
2) Protect Russias interests by placing pipelines and other strategic resources on more neutral and somewhat safe grounds.
3) Use Greece as a thorn in the EU'S paw, much like how Cuba is a thorn in Americas eye (perhaps this is why the U.S. Govt is considering trying to improve relations with CUBA???? to turn CUBA into an American asset of sorts in retaliation??)
4) Encourage Greece to leave the euro and start the cascading dominos of self-destruction in the EU weakening all the EU governments and banks that have an anti-russia policy (even though they are dependent on Russian energy exports which is a pretty stupid chess move on the EU'S part).
Putin is pretty much pulling pins to cause the EU to collapse.
Whats great is, such a cascading failure of the Euro system will inevitably cause a knee jerk reaction by the ECB (hyperinflation) and as such the value of Russia exports will explode..... (undoing some of the damage from sanctions and falling oil prices).
Hell maybe Russia can spark some European civil wars or conflicts (which always waste A LOT OF OIL) and many EU nations may get in debt to Russia to fund their wars between themselves...
Russia could endup like post WWII America financially speaking... and there isn't much the EU and America can really do to stop it assuming Putin plays a perfect chess game.
