Just as the existing 'truce' in Ukraine has been made a total farce as 1000s of military and civilians have been killed, so any 'hope' that this weekend's "peace efforts" will result in anything but more talk is rapidly diminishing... Germany's Merkel exclaimed honestly that it's "uncertain whether this will be successful," seemingly resigned to the fact as she added, "but it's at least worth making an attempt." French President Hollande admitted that Ukraine's eastern regions likely need "strong autonomy." Ukraine's Poroshenko blustered that he "trusts" Merkel, that the economy is collapsing (more money please), that the country does not need peacekeepers and a lack of arms is fueling conflict (so send us weapons) while pushing for a Russian withdrawal and quick cease-fire. Finally Vladimir Putin blasted that Russia is unwilling to tolerate a post-Cold War global system dominated by one absolute leader, to which US VP Joe Biden remarked simply "get out of Ukraine." But apart from that, talks are going great...

This really is ridiculously easy to do. Most Linux distos can run as live versions, so you can try before install (run off CD or USB Thumb). You don't have to overwrite your hard drive neccesarily either, just buy one for 50 bucks... not bad since Linux costs nothing and comes with full office suite and all multimedia etc already installed. For the somewhat more adventurous, you can dual boot. Run Linux for browsing and almost everything and boot up windows for your gaming and whatever other windows only software you can't do without (Creative Suite if you use that... etc)
Try it, it's fun + you won't understand how Gates has gotten away with retailing utter garbage to the peeps all these years.
Fedora and Centos, whichever one is a better match for the equipment (older Thinkpads). With these, its important to be careful of installing the latest available, as "the wave passes" and sometimes the newest versions start deleting useful tools from older hardware. For example, 32 bit KVM virtualization software stopped being supported around Fedora 16 or 17, so at some point it is counterproductive to install "the latest and greatest"
Linux is so well implemented these days that I sometimes have fifty (or more!) tabs open on my work computer browser, on a relatively modest laptop by todays standards.
If one is starting out with Linux, Ubuntu or Debian is probably a better choice than Fedora/Centos, although these last two are probably more flexible and ultimately more powerful...

I speak there languages, (one of them being Russian) and have thougt on moving there on more than one occasion. Events seem to be hastening my decision.
