Another JPMorgan Banker Dies After Murder-Suicide: Chokes Wife, Stabs Himself To Death

Tyler Durden's picture

By now, there have been so many banker-related suicides that it has become a moot point of i) tracking them all or ii) trying to find a pattern. And yet, one name continues to stand out: JPMorgan. The bank which has been most prominent among the list of "suicided" bankers notched one more casualty over the weekend when "a JPMorgan Chase & Co. employee strangled and stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself, according to police who are treating the couple’s death in Bergen County, New Jersey as a murder-suicide."

Bloomberg reports the gruesome details according to which Michael A. Tabacchi, 27, and his wife, Iran Pars Tabacchi, 41, were found dead Friday about 11:30 p.m. in the bedroom of their Closter home after a 911 call placed by the husband’s father, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in an interview. Closter is located in northern New Jersey, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from midtown Manhattan.

It wasn't a nail-gun this time. It was a knife:

Autopsy results on Sunday showed the wife died of strangulation and a stab wound to the chest while Michael Tabacchi died from a single self-inflicted stab to the chest, he said.

As his LinkedIn profile below shows, Tabacchi was an associate for JPMorgan in its global custody product unit.

This is how he pitched himself:

"Specialties: Excel and VBA is my bread and butter, I am very good and creative with data manipulation and reporting and can leverage my business knowledge to provide senior managers what is needed before asked to do so. I am also proficient with the remaining Microsoft office products (Word, Access, PowerPoint, and SharePoint)."

Full profile below:

But most eerie and disturbing is how comparable the Tabacchi double-death is to a comparable case from July of last year when as we reported not only did a JPM executive director shoot his wife multiple times before using the same weapon on himself (like now), but the tragedy also took place in New Jersey.

As IBTimes reports, Jefferson Township (New Jersey) police report that the Global Network Operations Center Executive Director, "Julian Knott, age 45, shot his wife Alita Knott, age 47, multiple times and then took his own life with the same weapon."

The silver lining: like back then, so now, the offspring of the dead couple survived the massacre.

Hmm.... he "died from a single self-inflicted stab to the chest" ?

So, I guess the perp wore gloves and held him from behind?

An IT desktop drone who knows "Word" and "Excel". As someone said above, he ain't no banker. Of course, it's hard to tell from the title. JPMC entitles everybody an "Associate"; I was offered a job there as an "Associate", but they scared me off and I went to work for an oil company. They admitted that people are on-call 7/24, and that it's a sweatshop. But they said they are working on "Work-Life Balance(tm)".

Stabbed himself to death.

Even the Japanese Samurai, with a short sword, and the strength to use it, and skill how to use it, had a second to finish the job.

This is beyond ludicrous.   Western men know, comparatively, squat about physical violence.   American bankers would more likely kill themselves by od'ing on ludes and alcohol.

Are you Americans happy to pays taxes when you end up with policemen who can say without laughing "Michael Tabacchi died from a single self-inflicted stab to the chest".

Have you ever imagined killing yourself with a knife? Slashing the wrists, ok. Try to go for the carotid, very uncommon but why not. Stabbing yourself in the chest with enough strength to kill yourself? COME ON!

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 15:58 | 5763262 Bemused Observer
Bemused Observer's picture

It is very difficult to stab someone in the chest, as the knife tends to bounce off the ribs unless you are very, very strong. He'd have had to 'fall' on the knife for enough force to get it through. Which IS possible. And if you wanted to make it look like a suicide, you wouldn't go for the 'knife in the chest' thing, there are many easier ways. And professional 'hits' are seldom so dramatic, except in movies. The people who want the hits done want them done as quietly and unobtrusively as possible. It's a clean-up op, they don't want to spend a lot of time dealing with it, or big headlines that attract attention. They want it out of their way.

But, this started with the nail-gun incident, which was just ridiculous...That obvious murder, and the stupid 'theory', became a joke. Now every dead banker is automatically assumed to be a 'hit'.

I think stress is causing a lot of people in this business to crack. Someone DID want 'nail gun guy' dead, but a lot of his buddies are just losing their minds I think.

Was there anything in the story or evidence about him falling on the knife?

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 19:03 | 5763986 Bemused Observer

They don't say. But there would have needed to be something to 'help' with a self chest-stabbing. It would be hard to generate the needed force with arms so close to your own body as they would BE if you were holding the knife. If you held it to your chest and let yourself fall, that would do it, as long as the knife didn't twist at impact and graze you.
Even the Japanese, who utilized the whole "kill yourself with a knife" thing, didn't go for the chest, too hard. Seppuku is all about the abdominal cut.

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 19:59 | 5764145 Bastiat
Bastiat's picture

It would not require much strength: a) you need to know where your heart is; and b) you turn the knife so it goes between the ribs without hitting bone.  Go buy a rack of ribs and try it -- you can always marinate them and bbq after.

That being said - I doubt it happened that way.

Remember way back when Hank Paulson had that closed-door meeting, and supposedly everyone emerged looking all scared? And then he got his bailout?

Well, my bet is that Paulson told those folks that the ship was going down, and that if they didn't bailout the banks, the banks would take them down too. So, the banks weren't allowed to go down.

But nothing changed, it just got swept under the rug for awhile. And all those bankers had to know that, and know that the day of reckoning was still coming. They've known that, day and night, for the past 7 years...

I can't imagine the stress of living with that hanging over your every move, every day. Every time someone comes to your home, or office, and wants to see you, you wonder if it will be a summons for some investigation you weren't aware of. Every time the phone rings, you wonder if it's bad news. You go back over everyone you have fired, and wonder if they took anything with them, that they are sharing right now as you stand there...

I could understand a rash of suicides among that group. A lot of folks would snap under that kind of unrelenting pressure.

Middle class, now being pressured more and more.  I would bet suicides among middle class is way up

He wouldn't have had to be in the first tier, much of the stress is going to 'trickle down' the food chain too. These guys may not be in-the-know as to the specific facts of their situation, just that things have become very dangerous in the worlds THEY inhabit, and that somehow they might be 'acquired' as a target for something. Just waiting for the little red laser dot to appear on their chests...

And maybe he and his wife were offed as an example to a higher up who is more valuable but dangerous and needs some control. Would be interesting to watch his boss and what he does and knows about the organization.

And not possibly a murder suicide. The perp stabs him lethally in the heart, this type of wound gives you a conscious life of about less than ten seconds unless you're hopped up on meth.  The wife starts screaming so to shut her up you strangle her to death then finish the job with a stab to the heart. I'd like to see the forensics on this one.

People have pain in their lives, for reasons we'll never know.

If/when bankers start dying in numbers in fires that are hot enough to explode teeth and prevent identification, and when remote ranches in New Zealand, Argentina, etc. with room for an air strip suddenly become unavailable at any price, that's when I'll really be worried.

In my past I dealt with the mobfia,,, pun intended,  on a face to face meet and greet.  Large midwestern city which will go unamed working for a national restaurant chain,  also unamed,  and a multi unit produce account worth well over 100 K a week gross receipts for said mobfia group.  Legitimate businesses to launder dirty money.  Linen,  vending machines,  concrete etc.  I could go on but I won't.  I met number 2 on my way into work one day after I changed produce companies.  It was a veiled threat but I wasnt born yesterday.  Maybe the day before.

Having said all that,  what little respect I had for that man at least he had the balls and the wherewithal to both meet me face to face and ability to back it up.  The FIRE and banker/investment people are all snakes and in bed together.  None with the spine to spell out the ponzi they all perpetrate on a daily basis.  I have more respect for a hoodlum with a knife saying give me your wallet.  Kind of like my mobfia friend did.

The veiled threat didn't materialize as I figured dying or the wife dissapearing didn't make sense in working for a restaurant company.  I gave him his business back and didn't have trouble ever after with my product quaility either.  Live and learn huh?

The whole self check out with a knife?  Hmm.  One has to wonder.  Having worked in a slaughter house and field dressed many deer I dont think if I wanted a killing wound I would try go through the sternum/brisket or ribs.  Under the sternum and up at the right angle would get er done I would think.  God,  if you missed though,  talk about serious heartburn.

Who is going to explain to the little one how mommie and daddy died when he/she is old enough.  Sad truly,,, good day to all.

I'll say it again. Just like that kid that killed his father, the hedge fund manager when his allowance got cut, this story has one striking similarity.

Both of these idiots were dating or married to women who are like decades older than them. They were either crazy to begin with or this drove them crazy.

A public service announcement for all you younger guys. Don't do this! The cougar thing is PR bullshit invented by some over the hill women. You'll turn 40 and you're going to wake up next to Janet Yellen and totally lose your shit. There are plenty of young women out there, have some dignity.

"...can leverage my business knowledge to provide senior managers what is needed before asked to do so".     He's asking for added stress by thinking he can do this.  Senior management's egos do not allow 27 year-olds to do that, and attempts will therefore result in ridicule and lies about what was really "needed".

I wouldn't think an American banker would have the disipline to stab themself to death (once in the chest), I would however tend to think the New Jersey police would do a shoddy or even corrupted job of investigating anything that wouldn't make them money.
