The NYPD Gives Advice How You Too Can Protect Yourself From The Wreckovery

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite the fact that the "shadow of crisis has passed" and Friday's jobs data 'proves' the recovery is on track, NYPD has some advice for those who have benefited from the 'wreckovery'...

RE: HUNGER GAMES WHEEL THEFTS

-----------------------

This is a joint communication of the NYPD Special 0.1% Protection Task Force & The Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Please use additional measures (in addition to manufacturers' standard practices) to secure the wheels on your vehicle, in order to deter thefts of said wheels by the 99.3%, who have been increasingly stealing vehicle wheels, especially on expensive imported vehicles, in order to help feed their families.

Thank you.

You are not alone Doc.  In upstate New York, the potholes are so large they have names...and they have remained unpatched for 3 years now. The tire place told me they've seen a decent increase in business. Meanwhile the newspapers are running headlines about record overtime pay for state workers and police/firemen. I think Krugman advised the state to just loot everything while letting infrastructure rot (his broken window policy).  Yay recovery.

Exactly, the guys that know their shit have a bag full of keys, or just pound a slightly oversized socket over the keyed lug and zip it off faster than a pit crew. The only thing a keyed lug is good for is pissing off your mechanic when he really needs it and can't find it.

There was a spate of smash-and-grab thefts from autos in my neighborhood a few years ago.  I had to replace triangular wing windows 2 springs in a row.  They never got anything worth taking so it was just a wasted expense.  I took to leaving my car unlocked.  Now, about once a spring, I come out and the stuff in the glove box is dumped on the floorboards and a couple bucks worth of quarters is gone.  No muss, no fuss.  And I don't worry about my car actually getting stolen because my wife and I both drive a stick.

Once upon a time, My locking lugnut adapter stripped.

Turns out, Sears & Harbor freight sell a set of "hammer-on" locking nut removers.

Bought it, took it home, stripped lockers were off in about 5 minutes each.

Locking lugnuts are less than worthless, because when they gunk up, strip, or rust, you - the honest owner of the wheels & spare -  will not be able to change that tire 7 miles outside of crapstone in 40 degree midnight drizzle.

They don't stop any theives, but they WILL stop you.

I just went to one of the normal auto stores and said "I need locking lug nuts, 1/2" 20 pitch thread."  My spare has not been stolen, and it is on the back of my Jeep.  It's a full sized spare with a BFG AT, so it's probably a bit more inviting than a donut spare.

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 14:42 | 5762839 cossack55
cossack55's picture

Thanks for the tip, but reading above makes it obvious they are only small inconveniences for the thieves.  Maybe a Mini-spare in the back and a nice new wheel and tire welded on the mount on the back.  I guess the whole back hatch would be gone next.

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 14:47 | 5762862 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

I torque the shit out of them, beyond what most tools that they can actually get to the lug nuts with could apply by getting a bite on the outside of the lug nut.  Part of that is because the shape of the rim means that you're not going to have an easy time getting a big monkey wrench in there.  Nothing is thief proof, but if there is an easier, faster target, that is what they'll probably go for.  They could come and take the swing arm off, but most thieves probably do not carry wrenches big enough around to do that, and it would be rather heavy and akward to carry away..

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 14:41 | 5762831 PenGun

A 17mm socket can be hammered on to most locking lug nuts, then you just smack it with a hammer. I have removed quite a few. Never to boost any though, people lose their keys all the time.

If you are lucky enough and have aluminum rims that have been on long enough, they stick to the hub via oxidation and then you need a hammer to get them off. Outside of that they make master lug key sets that most criminals would have if they are into stealing tires. Most aluminum rims are worth $50 as cores and about the same in scrap. A shotgun would be the best deterrent.

Mon, 02/09/2015 - 15:18 | 5763025 Tall Tom
Tall Tom's picture

A shotgun would be the best deterrent.

WE do not need deterrents. We need PREVENTION.

Since Courthouses are where all of the Criminals congregate (including the Lawyers lest I repeat myself) you all  just may want to throw a container of Bleach and Ammonia into an Air Conditioning Air Reuptake vent.

You can do some preventative maintenance. Those fluids do not set off any metal detectors so they are rather easy to smuggle in.

Why target one when you can eradicate many? They are fucking COCKROACHES.

Taking out one is like stepping on a cockroach when the entire building is infested. It does not fix the problem.

They used to hang Horsetheives because your life may depend upon that horse. Well they need to bring that penalty back for car thieves as your life may depend upon that car. Without tires that car is rather useless.

Gas them. It is a proven method of vermin eradication. Pest Control Companies tent and gas buildings daily.

Well...Courthouses are infested with vermin, aren't they?

All thieves need be killed. That is one thing that ISIL has right...

agree (and upvoted you) quasimodo, but take it easy.....  your wheels go, you buy new ones.   they go, you buy more.  this is really just a redistribution tax helping to spread the wealth away from the 1%.  when you buy so many new wheels that you can't afford weed, then you too are entitled to go out and collect the wheels of others.   once you relax and embrace this philosophy, you will enjoy NYC.

Had a rash of break-in in my underground parking garage 4 years ago.  Neighbouring car to my own was one of those broken into. Local crack addicts were looking for cars with aftermarket GPS systems.  The kind that come with the mounting bracket for the windshield and you can plug into the outlet in the astray recepticle.  My own was untouched as I have neither.  I was concerned. Broken carlite glass beads all over the floor.  I called the local police via their phone number. Talked to the operator and explained the situation. Told her to send a cop over to make a report as 4 other car's were broken to.  My request was met with;

Operator: Sir was it you car that was broken into?

Me: No, it was the neighbouring car.  Four other's in the garage within the vicinity were also broken into.

Operator: Sorry sir, we can't send the police

Me: Why not??????

Operator: Because it wasn't your property

Me: What would have to happen in order for you to send someone here to take a report?

OPerator: There would have to be signs of a violent activity

Me: What's that mean????

Operator: Do you see any shell casings or signs of a bullet laying on the ground or something of that nature?

Me: No, looks like they smashed it with a pipe or something.

OPerator: Then we can't do anything. As it's not your vehicle, please let your neighbour to whom the vehicle belongs to make the call to police.

Me:  You're kidding!!!!!!

Toronto Cops are uselss.  They'll stand there and watch over a hole all day at a construction site, but call them to report a theft and they turn you away.

I believe it's pointless to call a cop about a car theft these days. Fucking police departments have figured out that car owners are typically insured and that insurance will cover the cost of theft and damage, so they don't both responding.
