Obama & Merkel 'Agree': No Prospect Of "Military Solution" In Ukraine
"Success is anything but certain," warned Germany's Merkel during the uncomfortably un-united joint press conference as both the leaders appeared to be able to agree on only one thing - that a military solution will not happen. This was followed by what appeared to be President Obama conceding to Merkel that the provision of arms to Ukraine was kinda sorta 'off-the-table' - though still under "ongoing analysis." Hopes remain for a diplomatic solution and President Obama even concluded, "we are not looking for Russia to fail. ... Our preference is for a strong, vibrant, confident Russia." Other items that caused some tension included Iran, Israel, NSA "trust" and US asking for "benefit of the doubt," and Greek anti-austerity plans...

The bottom line - whether for appearances or not - President Obama came across a lot less hawkish than we suspect Poroshenko and the Ukrainian military was hoping for him to be.

Read my lips: Merkel has sold Greece for support of US position on Russia.
Merkel will be allowed to (try to) crush Greek resistance whereas they both stay on course to (try to) damage Russia economically and politically. In an ideal world people would rallye against those leaders, but for now most are dumbed down with their local news telling them the official opinion.
Obama always does the opposite of what he says. War is a comin'. Too bad the Ukis are only good at killing and raping civilians. (/s) One thing they are not good at is conducting actual war. More artillery to bomb the dirty Moskals out to make Lebensraum for Khazaria. That works too for Mr. Nobel Peace Prize.
"we are not looking for Russia to fail. ... Our preference is for a strong, vibrant, confident Russia."
Sure you are. That would explain all the military bases encircling Russia.
He is talking about regime-change, loud and clearly.
Yup. Never mind all those missiles that only seem to be pointed at Moscow. Really, they are for defense against Iran. Except when a NATO general "mis-speaks" and accidently admits NATO is there to protect the Baltics from nasty ol' Russia. But who cares about that - we're all friendly here, right? Never mind that knife in your back, Vlad.
A few minutes ago I watched the Swedish "Rapport" television news. The impression the viewers got that was that the EU leaders were somewhat more reluctant to send weapons to Ukraine than Obama, not that the EU and the US strongly disagreed on this subject. This means that Ukraine probably will be more reluctant to accept UN peacekeepers in eastern Ukraine and that the conflict will escalate.
I think that the smartest thing Putin can do now is to ask the rebels to give up and offer them Russian citizenships and pensions. No matter what he does there will probably be American anti-missile systems on Russia´s border in the future. I think that Victoria Nuland and her buddies knew what they were doing when they toppled Yanukovich. To them, an escalating conflict is no problem. Putin must also understand that European politicians are generally not driven by what is good from an economical point of view for their countries. They are driven by what can make them win the next election and by what those who have hold on them think. Ukrainian leaders are probably more concerned about Russian to support to Assad (who supports Hezbollah) than about happens to ethnically Ukrainian cannon fodder. They probably think that it is great that Russians and Ukrainians kill each other. They probably laugh at them. I don´t think that Poroshenko, Yatsenko and the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament consider themselves as Ukrainians. My impression is that they rather see the Ukrainians as their enemies, just like Lazar Kaganovich did in the 1930s.
What Putin should do is probably to realize that things like the coup d´état in Ukraine happen unless you act proactively. He should probably also tell that to his buddies in China.
You should stop watching Swedish TV. There will not be US ABM systems on Russian borders because they will be destroyed. There will be no UN Peacekeepers in Eastern Ukraine. Really, Sweden must be a really dull place if you spout twaddle like that. Russia will simply not permit the US to place offensive rockets on its borders so get used to watching how quickly US weapons disintegrate. If Israel attacks Iranian weapons arriving in Syria and Lebanon expect to see Russian weapons destroy US attempts to create a threat to Russian security akin to that of Fall Weiss in July 1941.
Sweden has lost the art of geopolitics and confines itself to farcical searches for "Russian" subs and French aircraft straying into its airspace. Your comment is so off the wall as to be incredibly bizarre
He won't give up on Donbass, thinking it is illusoric at best. And the Donbass is exactly what both, EU an US would like to have, forget about the people or the Kiev-government, it's the ressources.
All people in U kraine have to see what really is happening in the east, maybe weapons would really help to show them that neither the Government nor the West do care about the people - which doesn't say that Putin does, but that's not the point. They've been betrayed from the beginning.
EU and US do share values: $$$$ and power.
Your story is the Merkel side of what went on, not a mutual point of view. Barry kept the option of further arming Ukraine with leathal weapons open if diplonacy fails. Why obfuscate this?
Obama is also talking to the foamers in Congress who dream about war and think we can beat the eeeeevil Russkies - maybe with the help of John Wayne. Those same Congress-critters who - like Dr. Strangelove - have trouble keeping their right hand from giving the Nazi salute all by itself.
John Wayne was 4F.
Obama says : Wait and see. Pax Americana keeps its options open.
Mutti says: : A war will change nothing on the ground; aka Putin holds ALL the cards in Ukraine.
So...either the Pax Americana strategy will be to wait n see...and say, at the right moment : no deal, we will NEVER accept Putin creates a new de Facto empire, enemy of US (shades of USSR).
Whereas Mutti will try and avoid that return to clash of Empires by trying to convince Putin he will not win if he takes on the US militarily.
So, now Mutti and Hollande will try and convince Putin to partition Ukraine and warn choco-pops to not bait the Russian bear.
Will it work? Its now Putin's call !
But what is more important is : the energy game world wide makes him a king pin; especially as Saud its rival is going bat shit obscurantist in Wahhabist fall!
How can the West walk the plank with Saud and Nettyahou as "pardners in crime", all the while they try and cover Putin in slime ?
Pot and kettle... And Potus as Macbeth. (Lady Macbeth being his successor or Yellen, take your pick !)
Race to bottom continues from Xanadu to new Rome; and those who play at being "honest men" are few and far between.
The song of Lara, in a world of crime and slime.
I hope your view of Mutti is right, whereas I fear not. She's under pressure because of Greece and I think Obama has played cards with this issue. Also I can't imagine Merkel to accept a partition of Ukraine since all 3 do want the same regions under their control.
Allowing Crimea to stay russian and getting Donbass/Dnepr region independent won't be accepted by the US.
Anything less than independence/autonomy for the eastern part won't be accepted by Putin.
How will USA pry Crimea out of Russian hands? Crimea IS Russian, at least de facto, if not recognized otherwise. We can say "we do not accept" but there is no way we can force Russia out of there short of a nuclear war. And so far I think Obama is just barely sane enough to try to avoid one. Can't say the same thing about some of his advisors, however . . .
The USSA is going to force Russia to give up Crimea so that NATO can establish a naval base in Sevastopol? Even if Putin was willing to do this, his military hardliners would kill him before he could even pick up a pen. Unless the USSA is willing to fight a global nuclear war, this will never happen.
Viewing this situation from outside places one in a difficult position to opine as to the best solution for the people of Ukraine. From my personal experience in the western Ukraine (old polish lands) and eastern Ukraine it is evident that there can't be a peaceful coexistence now.
The western regions are very right wing, if not extreme nationalist. All inhabitants are very pro European. That stems from the influence Europe has had on these regions and constant micro and black market trade that has been a part of their economy forever.
Eastern Ukraine is very much like Russia, or better said: Soviet Union, Sovietsky Soyuz... These people were resettled there during the reign of USSR and they still remember how wonderful and orderly their lives were under central planning and believe they can get it back if they join Russia.
The only solution is to divide Ukraine along the language lines. After all the atrocities from both sides - there can not be peaceful coexistence between western and eastern Ukrainian people.
The Western Ukies may be very pro european, but the rest of the EU does not want them since they already have enough poles to clean toilets.
...and enough Latvians working as honeydippers during off-trolling hours.
So the West is gonna stick with mercs'n'drones for now. . . Was listening to NPR yesterday, and that loony-left (publicly funded) propaganda channel was beating the war-drum in Ukraine. Can't kill a convict in the US, but fully support blasting thousands of Ukrainians.
NPR= National socialist Propaganda Radio
Yeah, I heard that all weekend too. Hard to believe NPR would trot out somebody from the McCain Institute as an example of unbiased reporting on Ukraine.
.
You knew it was only a matter of time before McCain found himself institutionalized.
The most effective thing the McCain Institute could do with their funding would be to hire some crowd management to keep the lines in order for all the people making pilgrimages to piss on that old coot's grave.
America is ruled by a psychopathic elite.
Correction: ...Americas psychopathic puppets are ruled by a psychopathic elite.....
Pentagon may help Ukraine with this - http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/02/09/pentagon-spent-504816-on-viag...

Bad move if they boycot the session. They will find tons of AIPAC bucks backing their opponents next election.
*OBAMA: `NO DOUBT' SNOWDEN ISSUE DAMAGED GERMANS' VIEW OF U.S.
No barry, what damaged German's view is not Snowden, it is your spying.
