Russia's Newest Military Base In Europe Will Be Just 40km From NATO Facilities In Cyprus

Tyler Durden's picture

"We want to avoid further deterioration in relations between Russia and Europe," explained Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades upon reportedly signing an agreement to offer Russia military facilities on its soil (that we noted previously). The air force base at which Russian planes will use is about 40 kilometers from Britain's sovereign Air Force base at Akrotiri, on the south shores of Cyprus, which provides support to NATO operations in the Middle and Near East regions. As fault lines within the EU widen, Anastasiades said in his interview that Cyprus opposes additional sanctions against Russia by the European Union over Ukraine, "Cyprus and Russia enjoy traditionally good relations and that is not going to change."

Keep your friends close... and enemies closer?

As China.org reports,

Cyprus will offer Russia military facilities on its soil, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday.

In an interview with a local newspaper, Anastasiades said that a pact strengthening defense relations between the two countries will be signed when he visits Moscow on Feb. 25.

"There is an old (defense) agreement which is to be renewed as it is. At the same time, some additional facilities will be provided just like we do with other countries - France and Germany for example," Anastasiades said.

Cyprus is currently providing facilities to French planes, such as refueling and maintenance at an air force base near the western city of Paphos and port facilities to German ships supporting the United Nations peace operations in Lebanon.

The air force base at which Russian planes will use is about 40 kilometers from Britain's sovereign Air Force base at Akrotiri, on the south shores of Cyprus, which provides support to NATO operations in the Middle and Near East regions.

Cyprus and Russia traditionally enjoy close relations based on cultural ties and a common religious tradition.

Russia has been one of the main supporters of Cyprus in its decades old dispute with Turkey, providing both political and military support in the form of arms sales.

Anastasiades said in his interview that Cyprus opposes additional sanctions against Russia by the European Union over Ukraine.

"We want to avoid further deterioration in relations between Russia and Europe," said Anastasiades.

He added that a positive aspect is that many countries within the European Union are feeling the same way, supporting the diplomatic way rather than additional sanctions against Russia.

"Cyprus and Russia enjoy traditionally good relations and that is not going to change," Anastasiades said.

It'd be easier on Obama's (golf) game, if Cuba offered a naval base near Gitmo.

Even better, if Venezuela offered a base to Russia or China. That would get the gaggle of Pentagram hawks flapping.

Well, it did not take long for this to be squashed.  It is being reported, after the reactions from the US/NATO/EU, that there is NO agreement to have Russia place bases in Cyprus.  They should have stood their ground, instead they have been bitch slapped once again.

"But Mr Kasoulides dismissed the leasing claim, saying "there has never been any request from Russia about this", the Cyprus News Agency CNA reported.

He said President Anastasiades was referring to "the renewal of a military co-operation agreement with Russia consisting of maintenance of military equipment sold to Cyprus years ago, as well as the purchase of spare parts according to existing contracts"."

Not a strong move or resolve by either participant.  I doubt Greece will fare any better.

An open lobby by Vlad for such an event would be a threat.

He must be seen up front and behind closed doors as not threatening such a move.

Could he refuse a direct request for aid by Greece? Maybe not. But he sure as hell does not want to encourage them to knock on the door.

The best bet to maintain the peace is for Russia to do what it has been doing, taking care of itself and defending itself.

1- Russia cannot be invaded successfully.
2- Russia can by patience lead the way back to non-confrontation.
3- Any country who tries to attack Russia by any means could be eliminated in 30 minutes.

That overflight of the Cook was never denied or replied by the USG.

Now, shutting down 1 boat is easy compared to a squadron. There are navy guys more savvy than me on this, I worked in ELINT for another branch, but the RF has come up with some new toys.

In fact, while the US Forces have been going thru the grinder overseas, and depleting men and material, the RF has been building their stocks back up. They had a bad period after the USSR collapsed. Back then, their military was pretty spotty. Not so now, but they have not been demanding territory as Hitler did before WW2. To compare Vlad to Adolf is silly.

Why is the msm today full of stories that Vlad may 'threaten other Baltic states?'

As an amateur student of history and having been in those parts of the world I cannot find any solid signals of any intention by Russia to 'threaten other Baltic states.'

This is stuff similar to the 19th century etc. Russia will not give up Crimea, but the west wants them to abandon it.

Sorry, but all I can come up with is an excuse by certain 'powers' to abscond with Ukr using Russia as a threat.

IF Rusia wanted to, their army could way have long ago blitzkrieged the whole area.

Pay attention. Putin is the aggressor. It was Putin who interfered in Ukraine. Russia wants to expand its power and influence at the expense of its neighbors. Russia has a long, long history of engaging in such barbarism, which is why there neighbors are frightened to death of them. And what is Obama doing in all of this? He is fiddling while Europe burns.

I know there is a strong anti-American sentiment among many who frequent this site. But a world without America is a dark, dark place. Putin is just a modern day Hitler, Mao or Stalin. He needs to be challenged and defeated.

I used to laugh mildly when americans made fun of their "white trash".  Then the ukraine conlift opened my eyes Russians. Prior to this my experience with Russians were the few I worked or studied with. I didn't realize how scewed my image was. Those people represent the fine decoration of a giant white trash cake that is the east. When Russia opens the naval base in Cyprus, it won't refined people entering. Luckily for cyprus I guess it will just be a joke of a base anyway.

So you are racist and elitest.  Nice to know.  I hope we never meet as I would have to change sides of the street rather than throw up on you.

Should be interesting.

We'll now see GCHQ and Russians spying on each other given that the UK has a GCHQ spy base in Cyprus which spies on the Middle East. GCHQ was responsible for crashing the Internet between Asia<->Europe several years ago when it sent subs down to hack into the seabed cables.

They are so close to each other now, the generals can just glower at each other over the fence.  Let's see, Russia, GCHQ, NATO, who else?

Good for Cyprus.  Hopefully this will keep the hot-doggers from straying low over the towns.  Hopefully Cyprus is hitting both sides for some steep rents.

This should give Vlad an Mediterranean aircraft carrier almost as big as BHO's.
