US Plans To Open Naval Base In Australia Risking More 'Inflamed Tensions' With China

With Russia allegedly moving its military presence deeper into NATO territory in Europe (with a Cyrpiot base), Bloomberg reports that in response to the regions' growing strategic importance, the US plans to open naval base in Australia (risking further "inflamed tensions" with China) in the midst of a “pivot-to-Asia” that will see 60% of its naval forces deployed in the region by 2020. The latest move, Admiral Greenert confirms, "we’re doing a study together with the Australia Defence Force to see what might be feasible for naval cooperation in and around Australia, which might include basing ships," as the Indian Ocean and South China Seas are becoming "geostrategic hot spots."

As Bloomberg reports,

The U.S. is in talks with Australia about “basing” Navy vessels in its main South Pacific ally, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert said, a move that would risk inflaming tensions with China.

...

U.S. is in the midst of a “pivot-to-Asia” that will see 60 percent of its naval forces deployed in the region by 2020, a response to its growing strategic importance. It’s a policy China claims is an attempt to contain its own military expansion into the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.

“Increasingly the Indian Ocean is becoming a geostrategic hot spot,” said Rosita Dellios, an associate professor of international relations at Bond University on Australia’s Gold Coast. “Africa, India, the Gulf states all share the Indian Ocean and Australia is an important player.”

...

While Australia has no formal U.S. naval bases, it has agreed to host as many as 2,500 Marines in the northern city of Darwin and the two countries regularly hold joint military drills.

“This would not be a radical departure in alliance policy which is seeing an increased tempo of access to Australia by U.S. marines and will see more visits from the U.S. air force in the years to come,” said Rory Medcalf, head of the National Security College at Australian National University, where the speech took place.

All hail The Nobel Peace Prize winner...

The potential bolstering of forces in Australia and plans to expand Exercise Malabar to a permanent quadrilateral exercise reflects the Obama administration's 2012 Pivot to East Asia regional strategy, whose key areas of actions include "strengthening bilateral security alliances” and "forging a broad-based military presence.”

We can only imagine how China will feel about this...

Correct. Essentially the only countries that should be afraid are those whom the US call friends and allies.

The USA is that bad-news friend.

This is supremely stupid for Australia.  The US doesn't butter the Aussie bread... China does.  This really is the stupidest thing they cold possibly do.

Sorry, Mate - pretty "par for the course" here Down Under. Most of the Locals are certain "The Chinese are Buying Up Australia", and that "Putin Did It" (whatever "it" was), and with the fashion for putting Chevrolet badges on Holdens ("Gotta be a US Chevy, Mate"), 99% of the population will happily follow US propaganda to their graves.

So, there will be NO resistance from "The Locals" - even the Greens are rabidly pro-USA!!

Before World War II, the DC US moved the Pacific fleet to Pear Harbor, which was more a coaling station than a base, as bait for the Japanese. (The real Japanese attack happened on DC US occupied foreign soil, the Philippines).

The situation today is similar, but different. This time, in Australia, and elsewhere, they are opening bases as desperate deterrents--"Attack ___BLANK___, and you attack us." Won't work, as this time the DC US' opponents will not attack until after officially bankrupting the unofficially bankrupted DC US before making their move.

Like Sun Tzu says, Defeat the enemy before taking the field."

LOL

The banksters need to repay us.

I HAD a good buddy Aussie banker friend. Not just any banker but a Top Tier Banker with a dozen shell companies who globe trotted around the world. Could talk to him all day as i learned more about the real world from him and the bankers' place in it.
You only had to mention China to see his nostril's flare and face contort. This guy was usually as cool as a cucumber under any sort of pressure. however , it was a dead giveaway that China has now stripped away the western bankers' POWER and the animosity towards them is immense.

When TIME is called on Easy Pickings in Hong Kong, Africa, the Middle East and in the Developing world in general for the Banking Fraternity the LOSS is too great to bare. I fully expect the suicides to increase exponentially from here on in.

IT IS time for Australia to end its strategic dependence on the United States. The relationship with America, which has long been regarded as beneficial, has now become dangerous to Australia’s future. We have effectively ceded to America the ability to decide when Australia goes to war. Even if America were the most perfect and benign power, this posture would still be incompatible with the integrity of Australia as a sovereign nation. It entails not simply deference but submission to Washington, an intolerable state of affairs for a country whose power and prosperity are increasing and whose national interests dictate that it enjoy amicable, not hostile, relations with its neighbors, including China.
