If Not Russia, Then China? Tsipras Invited To Visit Premier Li Keqiang In Beijing

Tyler Durden's picture

First there was The BRIC nations; then South Africa was rolled in and the group became BRICS; but with news today (following yesterday's Russian invitations for Greece's new leader to meet with Vladimir Putin) that Greece's new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been invited to visit Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, we wonder if the growing non-dollar partnership will be expanded to BRICSH as The Hellenic Republic prepares to walk away from its European overlords 'partners'.

As ekathimerini reports,

Greece's new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been invited to visit Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, a government source said Wednesday.

Li Keqiang called Tsipras to congratulate him on his electoral victory and say "he would work to deepen and widen the historic ties between the two countries", the source said.

It seems shunned "isolated" Greece... (as The Telegraph reports)

"We want a deal. But if there is no deal, and if we see that Germany remains rigid and wants to blow Europe apart, then we will have to go to Plan B,” said Panos Kammenos, the defence minister and head of the Independent Greeks party in the ruling coalition.

“We have other ways of finding money. It could be the United States at best, it could be Russia, it could be China or other countries,” he told Greek television. Mr Kammenos said Greece would prefer to leave the euro if membership means submitting to what he calls a “Europe under German domination.”

... also has a few new friends.

China is the swing player among the big three world powers. And they are playing their position to the hilt.

I suspect they are loving every escalation in tension between the U.S. and Russia. As the third player, and not directly in the line of fire, their position only strengthens.

I'm sure Russia and China would love to have access to Greek ports in the Med to dock some military ships at, etc., etc., etc.

Russia and China might pay off a nice big chunk of the Greek debt in return for that kinda access.

I think it's fairly obvious the BRICS are planning a new money system. They've launched a fund, developed a SWIFT replacement, signed trade deals in local currencies/trade and bought a fuck load of gold.

A sudden move like that would halt everything and go to cash payout.  Slow and steady they probably get to extract more out of it and no real hurry if they have the winning hand.

That is the rub.  So many swoon for that virile Mr. Tsipras, standing up to the unattractive Eurocrats.  But you must admit there is an element of comedy too.  The choosy beggar deciding who will be allowed to give him "loans" he has no intention to repay.  Mr. T has a promising film career after he's done with politics.  The new Groucho Marx.

It's all so easy to invite the Russian military into your country for a few drachmas to fund your socialist welfare state for a few months.  But once the Russians are in, when do they leave?  Where is the democracy and people power in inviting yet another ruthless foreign power to take hold of your country?  Is that how you become a hero to generations of Greeks?

The Chinese would certainly be more attractive, because despite their self image, the Chinese are the dumb money at the world table.  The Greeks have a much better chance of taking Chinese cash and then blowing them off later.

The Chinese own the port of Athens and perceive Greece as the soft belly to enter EU. Not a bad idea.

China is active downside in Spain/Portugal and Greece in infrastructutre and RE (as in Africa bigtime for RM/land)-- and Upside in London RE.

The Chinese are strategic thinkers, but they have to solve their structural problem linked with having become the US oligarchy's "she camel" à la Foxconn who slave labours for Apple and Walmart. Too much debt and too much interconnection to King $ !

China desperately needs to balance US dependence with Euro connection.

Its all part of Pax Americana enfeeblement and consequent global rebalancing; where Eu is now seen as the West's  "weak link".

The West will now feel the reverse boomerang of the Boxer revolution and Pax Britannia's "opium wars" games of previous centuries.

You have no idea how deep is the sense of oriental desire to right the wrong History has inflicted on them since western industrial pre-eminence.

Tipping times; Potus has no idea what is up ahead; just like the neo-con Bush clique that created their own "barbarian" outsourced-subcontracting disaster, that in olden times Rome did with the Huns and the Goths.

The average travel time for a container vessel from Asia to the U.S. is between two weeks and a month.

China already trades more with Europe than with the US. of course this is at least partially a result of Americans no longer purchasing baby formula laced with carcinogens or antifreeze-enhanced toothpaste. The Chinese share of the US market is definitely heading downwards even as it tightens its grip on Europe.

But if China is so determined to right the wrongs inflicted during the Industrial Revolution, it is finally operating on the right ground to do something about it. Your point, in other words, is that China is interested in screwing the shit out of the evil white devils-- and the only evil white devils who are still buying its shitty merchandise live in the rotten underbelly of Europa.

Good luck to our Atlantic cousins.

Here's what this invitation is about

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/09/greece-syriza-stops-china-e...

Five years after its arrival in the Mediterranean, China’s global shipping carrier, Cosco, takes immense pride in the efficiency with which affairs are conducted on these piers. Business activity has tripled since the state-owned conglomerate acquired the port for €500m (£373m), the biggest foreign investment in Greece in modern times.

But any plans by Beijing to extend its commercial reach have been rudely interrupted by the ascent to power of Syriza, the radical leftists upending conventional orthodoxies in Greece.

On its maiden day in office, the new government announced that a privatisation programme launched to trim the country’s staggering €320bn debt load was in effect null and void. Plans to sell off further port assets – repair docks as well as car, passenger and cruise ship terminals that Cosco had been bidding for – have been scrapped.

Just a bargaining chip for either side.

Theoretically Greeks could use this as a concession later or find an alternative deal that allows for Cosco to long term lease out while Greece maintains control.  Something like that.  But definitely I see something like this a a temporary blip; a bargaining chip to be used later with an all smiles friendly photo op signing deal.

- So 3 bailouts, 3 failures by US-EU Banking System
- I think Capitalism is the binder
- Russia or China might just want ports and are willing to pay rent in a free enterprise type of way
- But maybe Russia & China Businessmen want to own concessions like toll roads, bridges, tunnels, railroads, bus systems, garbage collection, museums, national parks or memorials... who knows?

Some business deals can be profitable for the state and the business entity. Some deals give away national resources.

I understand their predicament and I get that they aren't too fond of the troika - for very good reason, I might add - but now is the time to be exceptionally paranoid. If I were them, I wouldn't trust the Russians, the Chinese, the Americans, the Germans - my bad, I mean the EU - Goldman Sachs or Paul Krugman, in fact no one, with the possible exception of God, the Dalai Lama and a Toyota Camry. If I had a say in things over there, I would simply cut the cord, suck it up, try to ban the national sport of corruption and get on with life as they used to know it.

Everything I guessed about Syriza's strategy has been vindicated, simply by reading their election policies and the overtures from interested parties in the US, China and Russia. Now we're in the foggy probability of no-man's land. I do wish they'd just cut loose and default, but I cannot see that happening for a variety of reasons outside of their control. A Greek default will trigger the tsunami of derivatives in play that are multiples higher than the debt itself and within a few short years we'll be bitching about quadrillion dollar bailouts of multinational banks if we're still around by then. This will not be allowed to happen. A military coup, invasion, assassinations, colour revolution - these are all the options for the banks and history shows that they will do it without blinking an eye.

Right now, Greece reminds me of Afghanistan in the 60's and 70's when its leaders (its king and its president) played the great powers against one another. That did not end well. Their only hope now is to drop the default bombshell before the banks can react and announce that they are reverting back to the drachma. Then batten down the hatches and watch the financial world implode.

If I were them, I wouldn't trust...with the possible exception of...a Toyota Camry...

And what do you have against a well seasoned Honda Accord?

Sure, a starter, periodic brake shoes, and air filters, (cabin and engine) need to be addressed, but they're sure less than the percentage of GDP Greece's "creditor's" require to service their purchase of bailout electronic cyphers added to their "balance" to keep the music playing.  The Greeks should've bought a '02 retired Ford Crown Vic instead of the battery operated Tesla that's currently being repossessed.

jmo.

Amazing how willing people are to believe that a phone call plus vague suggestion of a visit gets spun into Greece becoming a Chinese colony.

THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH THERE WILL BE A FORMAL INVITATION UNTIL THE BAILOUT ISSUES HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED.

The Greek guys are just trying to spin it to put pressure on the Eurogroup...

We have other ways of finding money. It could be the United States at best, it could be Russia, it could be China"

If Tsipras thinks he's going to get money from America, he's dreaming. Unless, of course, he's willling to receive a loan in the form of a shitload of weapons. That would be roundly voted by the Congress.

It seems America doesn't know what to do with its military surplus production, but money? What money?

The globalist banksters will NOT go quietly (as China seems to think or hope). They will got to war (WW3), before they go bankrupt or make a fair deal, and they will chose a time and place of their best opportunity to launch said war.

Sorry to sound to truthy, realistic or pragmatic.

Yeah, it is even in today's media in Scandinavian Novels like "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" or in detective TV Series where they find hidden arms.

Jean Claude Juncker even has a scandal from Luxemburg involving the King related to gold, funding, and accounting for Stay Behind Army.

- Greek government has to decide how to protect itself, it turns out that Greece is a strategic location against Russia, even if you over look the paranoia persisting about commies by the west and the west's insistence to influence politics through a strategy of tension

What does EU, ECB, IMF Expect with the Propaganda Spin and Racketeering going on?

- 3 "Bailouts" that were not Bailouts in the space of a couple of years!!!!!
- Don't Piss on me and tell me it is raining
- Greece has a good team, it is not one man or two guys
- EU & Euro-zone thought they had a Monopoly??
- USA thinks it has a Monopoly on Finance, Trade, Currency, Weapons, Strategic Locations, Wall Street, Humanitarian Assistance, What US Hubris!!

China is a huge power on every continent. Russia is less well known to me, but there are lots of Russian First names in Latin America...

The Chinese are not that stupid.

The guy will get the same treatment Tim Geithner did.

A good meal, some entertainment, and then they will all have a good laugh after he leaves.

China has never turned from their desire to remove the US from world dominion.

Greece is just a stepping stone.

I bet some sort of deal will happen.

But like some have said, no free money.

While it is early to assume that China and Greece would ink something, I wouldn't be completely surprised.

Why buy over priced real estate on Wall Street, alfalfa farms in the West Coast or broke mining companies when you can buy one the best black swans money can buy? The Chinese still have almost $1 trillion in funny money anyways. Aiding Greece would be a drop in the bucket compared to the potential leverage to be gained.

The Chinese are akin to Apple right now...a  massive cash hoard waiting for opportunities to present themselves.
