Stocks Jump On Reported Minsk Summit Cease-Fire Deal
Well that didn't take long. Just an hour or so after Merkel, Hollande, Poroshenko, and Putin got together to drink tea in Minsk, they have a 'deal':

So - to summarize - they agree to a cease-fire (which saw 1000s killed and shelling continue last time) and to support Ukraine's territorial sovereignty (except of course Eastern Ukraine?) Face-saving headline-maker comes to mind.

an agreement by Russia doesnt make sense unless the december shipments were tactical nukes and already in place - it takes a lot of energy to get the Separatists against overwhelmig odds to beat the government of ukraine - they cant get to the edge of annilating em and back off and then do that again after regrouping over and over

After the last cease fire, which Putin forced upon EUke, trapped WUke troops were allowed free passage to safety. A great advantage was lost by the EUKe forces. Then the cease fire was broken and the EUke forces lost many lives to once again trap WUke troops and to get (at least in some locations) the upper hand. And now Putin appears to force another cease fire upon EUke and will give the trapped WUke troops passage to safety.
When Putin forced the last cease fire the EUke leader of their forces called it a betrayal by Putin. My guess this is another betrayal but it may take a little time to be sure. Is Putin just using EUke troops, their deaths and the destruction of EUke towns as political pawns?

Very interested to see if the borders of any "agreement" are drawn around the old Minsk agreements or over the new territory Novorossia gained since then.

A cease-fire is not a "solution". However, it seems they are preparing permanent defensive positions in Kiev. Possibly in anticipation of splitting the country up?

No Russian troops, but the sanctions are also for russian backing of the "separatists". There is no doubt that Russians are backing Novorussia through a voentorg, which I don't think they are even trying to hide. This agreement, without the U.S., DNR and LNR signing it as well, is not worth the paper it is printed on. Hollande and especially Merkel (and even more especially Poroshenko) are only pitiful DC puppets. I am curious what is going to happen if NAF do not accept this agreement and continue fighting?

It's going to end up with Russian intervention eventually. Poroshenko does not call the shots, Yatz and Turchinov do. The cease fire will not hold and (if NAF stick to it) will enable Kiev junta (again) to regroup and begin a counteroffensive. They are already amassing troops in the area of Mariupol and north from Lugansk. Besides, the most important (but absent) party to this deal, namely the USG, is hell bent on war in that region to weaken and subsequently dismember the Russian Federation.
Where is the Eastern Ukrainian member of this "Peace Initiative"? Seems they should be represented. Yes?

there is no deal just yet...just reports of a document that may (or may not) be singed by the close of the conference.

of course "possible variants" means not everybody is happy with or is agreeing on the contents of said document. that alone leaves the whole peace process and the veracity of any document singed today in doubt.
in order for any cease fire to take hold and last Kiev will have to accept the loss of the eastern part of the country and essentially recognize the DPR and the PRL as sovereign, independent entities and agree to their right to full and unrestricted self governance. that is the simple reality on the ground as Kiev can not re-take those areas militarily (at least not without direct and full western military intervention and we all know where that will lead) and those regions will not accept anything less than full independence.
but I would guess that the chances of the DC backed Kiev junta accepting this are slim to none.
I can't help but note that as these peace talks are taking place, the US media is hyping up the Russian invasion angle again. according to quotes from US Army Europe command there are thousands of Russian army regular forces fighting all along the eastern front as we speak pushing Kiev's outmatched and under equipped army back further. oh yeah and they also confirmed that 600 American troops will be deployed to the Ukraine to "train" the Ukrainian national guard.
so the narrative is already set regardless of what comes out of Minsk, DC is in fact, sending troops to train the Kiev army...but train them on what?
why, the heavy weapons they are about to send them of course to either fight off the evil Russians or maintain this supposed cease fire. either way sending Kiev tons of firepower is a done deal, the result of this meeting in Minsk doesn't even factor in and it never did.
the important thing now is just how Moscow will respond in light of the fact that they have already stated that such an action would be considered an act of war against the Russian Federation...
