Dijsselbloem Pours Cold Water On Greek Compromise: "Don't Get Your Hopes Up"

Tyler Durden's picture

Just over an hour ago, what appears to have been a strawman now was issued by Bloomberg via leaked sources from Greek and German officials that proclaimed talk of a "compromise" deal that makes everyone happy in Europe. However, as the leaders exited today's summit, the tone of their responses did not exactly sound compromise-prone:

  • *DIJSSELBLOEM SAYS GREECE PROCESS GOING TO BE V. DIFFICULT, "DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP YET" ON GREECE
  • *MERKEL URGES GREECE TO MAKE UP ITS MIND SOON ON FINANCING

Hardly the resoundingly positive spin we saw earlier. Poland's Tusk, Finland's Stubb, and good old Juncker also chimed in with the latter commenting on Greece's "anti-social" behavior. Tsipras made some neutral statements, then came out swinging, "The MoU as we knew it is over. The same goes for the troika. All these years, the burden fell on the poorest. Our aim is to restore the sense of justice."

Juncker

"We have heard that the Greek government wants to cancel some measures 'cos they are antisocial. Indeed, they may be antisocial."

Eurogroup

  • *DIJSSELBLOEM SAYS `DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP YET' ON GREECE
  • *DIJSSELBLOEM SAYS `VERY CAUTIOUS' ON GREECE
  • *DIJSSELBLOEM SAYS GREECE PROCESS GOING TO TAKE TIME
  • *DIJSSELBLOEM SAYS GREECE PROCESS GOING TO BE V. DIFFICULT

“I’m very cautious on the political side, it’s going to be very difficult and it’s going to take time and don’t get your hopes up yet”

“The technical assessment will be a comparison to see what the common ground is between the current program and the political program of the new Greek government. The Greek minister has said before that he thinks 70 percent of the current program he could take for his responsibility. So we could look at the 70 percent, we could also look at the 30 percent; what has to come out, what could be put in place and these have to of course be valid measures and that’s the kind of work we’re going to do this weekend and maybe we can make some political progress again on Monday.”

Germany

  • *MERKEL SAYS TSIPRAS MADE GENERAL STATEMENT ON GREECE GOALS
  • *MERKEL URGES GREECE TO MAKE UP ITS MIND SOON ON FINANCING

Finland

  • *STUBB SAYS CONVERSATION ON GREECE WAS `VERY GOOD'
  • *STUBB SEES GREECE PROPOSAL BY MONDAY

“We had a very good conversation and discussion about a possible avenue and path forward and I am sure that they will be working on some kind of a program with the institutions over the coming days and put forward the proposals on Monday”

Poland

  • *TUSK SAYS EU LEADERS DIDN'T ENTER INTO NEGOTIATIONS ON GREECE

*  *  *

Then Tsipras spoke:

  • *TSIPRAS SAYS DIJSSELBLOEM STATEMENT IS POSITIVE STEP FOR GREECE
  • *TSIPRAS: EUROGROUP TO DISCUSS MONDAY TRANSITION TO NEW PROGRAM
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GREEK DEBT PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE TACKLED
  • *TSIPRAS VOWS TO TACKLE VESTED INTERESTS IN GREECE
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS NO ONE WANTS TO CREATE RIFT WITHIN THE EURO AREA
  • *TSIPRAS SAYS GREECE IS `SPECIAL CASE' AMONG BAILOUT COUNTRIES

"The MoU as we knew it is over. The same goes for the troika."

"All these years, the burden fell on the poorest. Our aim is to restore the sense of justice."

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this…

  • The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing
  • The fifth would pay $1
  • The sixth would pay $3
  • The seventh would pay $7
  • The eighth would pay $12
  • The ninth would pay $18
  • The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59

So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball.

“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20?. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men ? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

The bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

  • And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
  • The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
  • The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
  • The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
  • The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
  • The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,”but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

I wonder what would happen if Germany just didn't show up for the Euro one day ...........

The Greeks were sold a fantasy solution and they bought into it.  Of course, the post election polling seems to show that 75% wish to remain within the EU.  75% seem to agree that the regular EU subsidies of EUD 2,000,000,000 a year sent their way are helpful.  Tsipras and ViralFukus are on their fantasy mission to demonstrate the absolute failure of Socialism, whatever the damage it does to the entire country.

The problem is that things have formed in such a way that none of the sides can really back down or compromise without looking weak.  If the EU compromises it will be hell with the rest of the South.  If Greece compromises Syriza will be discredited overnight.  It is a major deadlock.  Which will of course lead to a bullshit solution that makes everyone look like a winner until you read between the lines.  Good enough for CNN.

As I said, you cannot negotiate with bankers.

There is only one viable solution to the problem of unpayable debt: default.

And ask yourself if the debt is even legitimate. After all, the debt takes the form of loaned money that was created by banks out of thin air. The money did not exist prior to the loan.

Horse Shit.

If the money was just immaginary and created out of just thin air,

Explain how the shareholders and depositors felt such angst when Cyprus did the bail-in.  Why did they not just exhale some air and restore the soundness of the banks?

Thu, 02/12/2015 - 20:55 | 5778556 dot_bust
dot_bust's picture

The Cyprus bail-in was not legitimate. Bankers do illegitimate things on a daily basis. Look at derivatives.

Derivatives are a giant fraud. They are allegedly derived from an underlying asset but are not in fact the actual asset.

The simple fact is that there are more derivatives than actual assets. That is the very essence of a Ponzi scheme, as is the notion of fiat currency, also known as unbacked currency.

Thu, 02/12/2015 - 20:56 | 5778513 acetinker
acetinker's picture

The system could be legitimate if the people at large were aware that money is created when they go into debt, but they aren't, and purposely so.

That banks charge interest on "money" that came into existence only because someone promised to pay said "money" back, at regular intervals (this makes us money-launderers, btw) only proves that bankers are criminals with .gov protection.

Greece has been used as a conduit to launder money that would otherwise have to be funneled directly from Central Banks to their constituents- presumably to make scam appear legit.

Waiting for Tsipras and Varoufakis to point this out.  If they don't, they either genuinely don't know, or they're just another set of actors on the global stage.
