300 US Troops In Iraq Under "Severe Threat" After ISIS Seizes Nearby Town
While military officials have stated that their "advisers" are not involved in the fighting, WaPo reports that ISIS militants have seized an Iraqi town within two miles of the Ayn al-Asad base where 300 US military advisers are stationed. The region remains under "severe threat" and the local council has called for "immediate and urgent military reinforcements” after the attack on the town of al-Baghdadi, which began in the early morning." It seems those non-boots-on-the-ground advisers are about to get a taste of what President Obama promised they would not...
As The Washington Post reports,
Islamic State militants seized parts of a town in Iraq’s western province of Anbar on Thursday, sparking fierce fighting within miles of a military base where hundreds of U.S. advisers are stationed.
Anbar’s provincial council called for “immediate and urgent military reinforcements” after the attack on the town of al-Baghdadi, which began in the early morning. Ayn al-Asad air base — where some 320 U.S. personnel have been training Iraqi troops and tribal fighters — lies five miles west of the town. At one point, the militants controlled 90 percent of the town, a local official told Reuters.
The clashes so close to U.S. forces will raise concerns as President Obama makes a formal request for congressional authority to use military force against the Islamic State, a move critics argue could open the door to real engagement with the militants on the battlefield.

In a statement, the U.S. military confirmed that there had been “heavy fighting” in al-Baghdadi on Thursday. It said there was no direct attack on the base, though there were “reports of ineffective indirect fire in the vicinity.”

I don't like the American attitude towards war and heroism. I am very cynical about it. Actually I really hate it. However - I do feel compassion with every young soldier - be it men or women - that is brought into a warzone. At least those that are shy about taking another human beings life. And especially those that lose their soul to war. It is a universal compassion - not limited to country or religion. But my compassion will not make a difference. Only my vote and my voice within my society will make a difference. I hope that these American soldiers will return safely to their families. Good luck to them.

The loss of 300 military advisors, while at first seems alarming, after some reflection, you have to reluctantly come to the cynical understanding that most, if not all of them, are not there for militaristic reasons, but financial ones.
Their permanent loss would be good for everyone but themselves.

The interesting part of this is that most US inspired military bases are set up under the assumption that they will 'project power', be used to send out patrols, and be used to stage larger assaults. While they do set up security against small groups of infiltrators, they NEVER assume they will be attacked by a large well armed force. Thus these bases are indefensible, which is one reason why the Iraqi army collapsed as fast as it did during the initial assaults by ISIS.
As others have stated, our advisors either need a lot of boots to show up fast, or should get out of Dodge. They should not 'lose their heads' and think surrendering to ISIS is an option.
Any fixed fortification is indefensible ove time. The Iraqui army is currently strong enough to take on ISIS if it had the will. What they lack is the Sunni will to fight, they had under Sadam. The retraining game is a fools game. The current Iraqui goverment is not a sustainable government because it has no aurhtority from most Iraquis.
As to the American advisors. Obama put them there. They have a mission and are doing it. They will not flee nor surrender, unless they are betrayed from within the base. We have enough military assets in the area to protect them. Obama does not need authorization from Congress to protect his men on the ground. He needs to get Rice, Jarrett, and the Democratic Party out of the way and let the Military do its job.
The U.S. is definitely the world leader in heroes on a mission...LOL...
I am also guessing that there is a fair chance these 300 are sacrificial lambs to further the beating of war drums.
