Visualizing The World's Greatest Fears

Tyler Durden's picture

What are the greatest fears by country? Throughout the world, people are concerned about very different things - from inequality to AIDS and from nuclear war to religious hatred...

By region, North Americans and Europeans are generally most fearful of inequality. However, each other region had their own number one perceived fear. Africans, not surprisingly, were most afraid of AIDS and other diseases. South Americans were most afraid of nuclear warfare and Asians were most afraid of pollution and environmental concerns. Lastly, people in the Middle East were most concerned about religious and ethnic hatred.

Culture and history also makes the fears of specific countries to be more heightened. More than half of Lebanese people (58%) fear religious and ethnic hatred the most. 49% of Japanese people most fear nuclear weapons. In Spain, where 51.4% of youth are unemployed, it is not surprising that 54% of Spanish people fear inequality the most. Spain is also where the fear of inequality has grown the fastest – it has increased 27% in the last seven years.

Thanks to Frank Herbert, reading the original Dune in my early teens (and the sequels that soon followed) was a major wake-up call to geopolitics. As goes the ageless formula,

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain.

Most fears are based upon fear itself.  Not that which we ascribe fear to.
For example (great exercise)
Tell me what you were most fearful of yesterday.  A week ago.  A year ago.  5 years ago.  25 years ago.  The day you were born.
No, you really don't remember them, do you.
You remember being fearful, angry, resentful, etc., but the details and intense feelings dissipate.

And most indeed, are the result of ourselves, not reality.
That's why Perceptions Management and Propaganda are Ever So Effective.

Cower up!

I FEAR our nation is lost.

Total transformation.

The cycle of Democracy and bondage has recurred over and over throughout history.

1. From bondage (Rule of men) to spiritual faith
2. From spiritual faith to great courage
3. From courage to liberty (Rule of law)
4. From liberty to abundance
5. From abundance to complacency
6. From complacency to apathy
7. From apathy to dependence <--WE'RE HERE
8. From dependence back into bondage (Rule of men)

No matter what the current “flavor” of socialism is, it always leads to tyranny.

In 1916, William J. H. Boetcker published a pamphlet titled, The Ten Cannots:

  1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
  2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
  3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
  4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
  5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.
  6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
  7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
  8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
  9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
  10. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

Boetcker also wrote the “Seven National Crimes.”

Good stuff, but much of this could be boiled down to just one of the deadly sins:   envy.

Still, Arguably, lust could feed envy too:  The competition for wealth and status is also a fight for access to more and or better quality women.

Anyhow, moralists of a religious bent were onto this matter of being preoccupied by inequality many, many centuries before, and with greater clarity.   It's wrong.  It's destructive.

From the Pew Study on which this is based.

Americans are somewhat divided on their biggest fear. While many name inequality (27%), around a quarter also see religious and ethnic hatred (24%) and the spread of nuclear weapons (23%) as top threats. But as with many issues in the U.S., there is a party divide. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to name ethnic hatred as a top concern. And Democrats are more apt to name the gap between the rich and the poor as the greatest danger. Independents are more divided.

Seriously WTF!!!!

Our 'leaders' all assure us that of all the truly horribbibble and definitely terrorifically terrribble things that might soon kill us or our children, CO2 is DEFINITELY at the top of the list ('austerity' being a close second).

If Brain Williams was still at it, he would expose this so called study as clearly being right wing propaganda designed by the Koch brothers to further the radical rights racist agenda.

I might trust Pew's results for overview info, but if only ~35% R's for ethnic hatred, that means 65% R's don't. And same for D's where 15% do means 85% don't. So what can we really take away? Not much.

Socialist USA and Europe (including crony capitalist fat cats) still enjoy the best living standards in the world but are being newsfed the inequality boogie man, which translated means the government can only be responsible for redistributing wealth to lessen our "fear of inequality." This includes advertising things like White Privilege as an obstacle to attaining Social Justice" or the evening out of wealth.

White Privilege may be defined as a child having two parents in the house. How unfair to Social Justices. As far as the bankers and ultra rich having too much wealth, be not dismayed, they will be cut down to size just like they were in 1929. Even after they lose their extra big share of the pie there will still be inequalities of income and wealth and the socialists will still play it up reminding us to covet and be jealous of our neighbor's goods. They are so rabid about pretending to even out all wealth (except their own) I could see them pulling a Pol Pot and destroying all money (except their own)

My greatest fear, common among the Q99x2, is that somebody will slip me an alcoholic drink. Spontaneous combustion always follows and although we show up again in some other place. I guess it is spontaneous combustion in either case. Fuck it then hope I'm sleeping when it happens.

there will never be income 'equality'. the last thing i "worry" about is that. as long as somebody does something better than someone else, people will be willing to pay them more. a doctor is not going to work for 20k a year and everyone can't be paid 7 figure salaries.

my primary concerns are the gradual usurpation of the US government for the last hundred years by 'progressives' (collectivists), the predatory/parasitic nature of humans, and religious extremism.
