Much of what you will find Jesus said were quotes from the Old Testament or teachings that illuminated scripture.He was a rabbi (teacher).
Look at the cycles in scripture. You will see recurring themes. The Old Testament fortells the New Testament and the New Testament refers back to the Old Testament.
You can find good teachers online. One excellent teacher is Damian Kyle at Calvary Chapel in Modesto.

Click on "Thru the Bible" to find his Sunday night teachings. I think the Calvary Chapels all do continuous through the Bible series. I usually agree with most of how he interprets scripture. Also, he tends to be good about keeping up with how the persons in the Bible are related through the geneaologies, marriages, and stations in life. He brings in the politics and intrigues of the times.
It is also important to learn scripture from a Hebraic perspective. There are idioms and shortcut references that are rooted in tradition. Scripture is full of irony and great stories too. It is very helpful to have someone who can do some decoding for you. Also, ancient Hebrew has a number system behind it that is reminiscent of the chemical elements. You are correct in that there truly are quite a number of nominal Christians who have never delved deeply into scripture and tried to understand what is within those pages. Since you can see that some people have gone off the rails, why not try to see what they aren't understanding and living out? They have missed so much richness in their lives.

Actually, I live based on a book that proves itself over and over. I use discernment with what the teachers say. Quite frankly, you cannot rely soley on what men say. You have to read the scripture.
Dig around and you'll be amazed. You'll find hidden symbolism in the OT that only becomes apparent in the NT.
Ex: The blood on the doorposts and lintel applied with a twig that saved the firstborn during the first Passover.
The blood as applied marked a cross. The twig symbolized the wooden cross. The blood was from an innocent living creature killed as it entered the prime of its life after it had lived among the people who killed it (inside the house, to make the point).
There is so much more.
Whether or not you take the Bible as the word of God, it is worth reading on the basis of literature itself. It is the basis of Western civilisation and the Ten Commandments are the constitution of Western civilisation. The Bible is our source document.

One of my best friends was raised in Eastern Ky. His family was dirt poor, raised tobacoo and whatever else they could to survive. Never went beyond high school but today is a wealthy cattle farmer. Although he is short on formal educatiion, he is still one of the most educated men I know. That would be self-educated and well read. He is among many of the Kentucky people I know who have similar stories.
