Yeah, I saw the proposed ATF rules regarding M855 ball yesterday.
Dont you just love how they are trying to call that ammunition "Armor Piercing"? Its just a lead ball like 99% of existing ammo of every caliber. They are just attacking it because it is the ammo for the most popular best selling rifle in the U.S. Its like calling a rose a marijuana plant and outlawing it.
Green tip zips right through 1/4" steel like butter, but other than that, yeah it's just like regular ammo.....
The projectile actually does have some steel in it, but its core is not a solid steel penetrator. It will punch through body armor better than a regular projectile out of a 7.62x51, but it isn't exactly a super penetrating cartridge. If the cocksuckers weren't such cocksuckers, they might not have to worry about AP going through their vests, because let's face it, banning AP ammo is the same as saying that they don't want stuff that can penetrate their body armor. Even better yet, if the ATF didn't exist, they really wouldn't have to worry about it at all.

.357 is basically a rifle round put into a pistol. It has energy levels similar to .223. Fire it from a 16" rifle and it'll do the same amounts of damage. I still don't really understand why there's no semi-automatic carbine which takes .357. If there was "One Round To Rule Them All", this'd be it. I assume there are practical problems with them in semi-automatics.
.308 with steel core will cut through trees never mind bone. You just need some AP ammo. Someone told me this was the main raison'detre for the AK74 vs the AK47. Smaller lighter ammo with a steel core as standard. Punch through NATO personnel armour like a hot knife through butter.
The .357 cartridge is rimmed. Rimmed cartidges suck in magazines. Someone did the maths to do .357 bullets in resized 5.56 cartridges, but that is all getting very custom. The rounds apparently work in AR mags, but you will need a custom upper for those rounds. I think there is a commercially available .357 sig AR type rifle on the market.
357 SIG doesn't have the case capacity to compete with a 357 mag in a rifle. The SIG was designed to approximate a 357 mag in a revolver with a 4" barrel with a 125gr projectile. It comes very close to doing that, depending on barrel length and whatnot, but considering that you're talking 9 or 10 gr of Bluedot in the SIG and 15 or so in the magnum, the extra barrel length in a rifle will really see the 357 magnum shine. The 357 magnum also does much better with heavier bullet weights. Don't get me wrong, the SIG is great for medium sized to semi-compact pistols to strap onto your hip for self defense, but my XD 357 SIG doesn't hold a candle to my Blackhawk or my dad's 357 carbine when it comes to muzzle energy.
