I would have preferred a press confrence going along these lines;

"Hello ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for your time. I am going to issue a statement, and then take questions.

ehem (clears throat)

It is the position of the Greek government to burn this entire motherfucker to the ground unless they give us exactly what we want, and that now includes Mario Draghi doing all future press conferences in drag.

Thank you for your attention. Any questions?"

That is pretty much what he was saying. Didn't you hear it? There is absolutely no way out. They want to negotiate a "contract" as "partners", not a "program" for debt slaves.

And the TAFKAT (The association formerly known as Troika) cannot (CANNOT) let this happen, because it means that everybody and their mother would come and renegotiate as partners.

So GAME OVER. Just in nicer words.

(I wouldn't want to be the bodyguard of Varoufakis...)

Varoufakis has some balls. He is not afraid of bank runs.... It is better to default than be stuck for 20 years with unrepayable debt... No Japan scenario for Greece, well done Mr. Varoufakis... (Theseus).

problem is, he is not a "player". he would not know a financial market from a moose. as many if not all university professors do, he underestimates the consequences of what he is proposing. In this case he's overestimating domestic support: Yes, the Greeks go to Syntagma Square to show support for him, but only in between going to the ATMs to withdraw Euros from their bank accounts.

he's also misrepresenting the stakes on the table, which are anyway asymmetrical: the EU has already put a lot of money into Greece, and he thinks that they will throw good money after the bad, as all politicians do. the EU thinks instead that good politicians throw good money after the bad only AFTER they've checked which part of their own constituencies will benefit. In this particular case, the answer is "none". True, they will have to own up to the fact that Greece was a basket case, as economic leaders go, and the EU has a fairly low bar. But Varoufakis himself has said, and that's the measure of the idiocy, that Greece will never repay that debt: why should it repay the new one? yes, the hat will pass through the pews to give some hardship money: but no leader, not even old Maggie, would have found the guts to go to the people to say:" i'll tax you so that some greeks can be paid for imaginary work".

The unspoken problem that Tsipras will have if he gets the EU-crats to roll over is that he will then have to rely on the Greek people to roll up their sleeves and get the economy going. Right now it's still shrinking. And many Greeks have become accustomed to living the life of Reilly for years and may not rise to the challenge. Then what?

It's worth remembering what 300 Greeks managed to do at the Hot Gates of Thermopylae.

Just like the Japanese, the Greeks have a nascent warrior spirit.  Push them too far, and it comes out.  Again.

They're in a depression.  My guess is that the warrior within is a lot closer to the surface than it is in this country right now.

It was the majority of Greek citizens, using the system of Democray to choose leaders, who enjoyed the benefits of spending the money, assets, and wealth of others.  That same system brought them the burden of giving their future (today is yesterday's future) in repayment.

They voted for it and now they are getting what they bragained for.  And getting it very very vigorously.

They have no Plan B, because they've shot their wad. They're going to default. They want to continue to spend more. And they want to get on with this as soon as possible so they can blame someone else for it. Delaying this only risks the Marxist gov't in power.

Greeks, you're having this guy getting rid of all your debt without getting rid of your taxes. So in response to this "bailout" you got in 2011, you also got VAT jacked up on you. Think these Marxists are going to normalize that back down to pre-bailout levels? FUCK NO.

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 17:11 | 5791299 Aristofanes

You have no idea of what is going on in Greece. The problem is not the VAT, it is who pays the VAT or the other taxes  and where the money from the taxes go.

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 17:58 | 5791523 Catullus
Catullus's picture

So it's the VAT?

Because let me guess how the Euro works... it's a banking cartel that gets the member nations to raise taxes to pay the expansion of the credit. And allows the centralizations of Big Government, Big Business, and Big Labor to fuck everyone and their mother throughout Europe?

What am I missing here? Did you think that defaulting on debt that was already purchased by the ECB and sterilized from any sort of impact on the rest of the banks is going to make a shit of difference? The taxes are still there, the big government remains. The Marxists will "nationalize" industries in Greece , which means they're going to pay off the Big Business interests that paid next to nothing for them years ago.

Schaeuble / Dijsselbloem pretending they're idiots by talking about 'words' that have to be apparently different and then going on about program extension and business as usual was painful. Listening to Varoufakis telling it like it is sure is refreshing, if nothing else. No wonder there are attempts at discrediting him - remember Spiegel's 'is Varoufakis anti semitic' article, now recent attempts to get the Greek Govt to replace the guy... too bad they apparently got no hold over anyone important at Syriza.

I am reminded of former FinMin Papakonstantinou and Venizelos - former now under trial for attempting to delete certain names from the original Lagarde list (names of his own relatives, that is), latter for 'forgetting' about the list's existence and leaving it untouched in his desk drawers for months, even while promising to combat tax evasion and so on. These are the kind of people the EU wants to 'have discussions' with, not someone of Varoufakis's caliber (like it or not, he has oodles of it).

Varoufakis exposes Troika's CIA-type method
“Here's Varoufakis describing how Greece's creditors, the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF (informally known as the Troika) treat the country's economy: 'Shortly before the cardiac arrest, we are granted a few breaths of air. Then we are put under water again, and the cycle starts anew.'”

“The bailout Greece has been getting allows it to keep its public finances flowing, but also includes severe austerity conditions, as well as structural reforms like the privatisation of government-owned assets. When Spiegel said there were good people working at the Troika, this was Varoufakis' response: 'There were also very good people at the CIA when waterboarding was used against their will and therefore were in a terrible moral dilemma.'”
