HSBC Bank : Secret Origins To 26/11 Mumbai Attacks

#SwissLeaks what the media has termed it is a trove of secret documents from HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm that reveals names of account holders and their balances for the year 2006-07. They come from over 200 countries, the total balance over $100 billion. But nowhere has the HSBC Swiss list touched off a more raging political debate than in India.

That’s why to obtain and investigate the Indian names, The Indian Express partnered in a three-month-long global project with the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and the Paris-based Le Monde newspaper. The investigation revealed 1,195 Indian HSBC clients, roughly double the 628 names that French authorities gave to the Government in 2011. The new revelation— published as part of a global agreement — is expected to significantly widen the scale and scope of the ongoing probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court.

For years, when banks have been caught laundering drug money, they have claimed that they did not know, that they were but victims of sneaky drug dealers and a few corrupt employees. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is that a considerable portion of the global banking system is explicitly dedicated to handling the enormous volume of cash produced daily by dope traffickers.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is not “demand” from the world’s population which creates the mind destroying drug trade. Rather, it is the world financial oligarchy, looking for massive profits and the destruction of the minds of the population it is determined to dominate, which organized the drug trade. The case of HSBC underscores that point. Serving as the central bank of this global apparatus, is HSBC.

East India Company Origins

The opium trade began in the early 1700s as an official monopoly of the British East India Company, which conquered India, and ran it on behalf of the British Crown and the financiers operating through the City of London. Indian-grown opium became a key component in the trade for tea and silk in China.  The East India Company had a thriving business selling British textiles and other manufactured products in India, and selling Chinese silk and tea in Britain. But the Company ran into problems with the opium end of the trade. The influx of opium caused major problems for China, and led the Emperor to issue an edict in 1729 prohibiting opium consumption. Then, in 1757, the Emperor restricted all foreigners and foreign vessels to a trading area in the port city of Canton. A stronger edict in 1799 prohibited the importation and use of opium under penalty of death.

None of this stopped the British from continuing to flood China with opium, creating millions of addicts, but it did cause the East India Company to protect its tea and silk trade by shifting its Chinese opium operations to nominally independent drug runners who bought opium legally from the East India Company in Calcutta, and smuggled it into China. The most prominent of these drug-running firms was Jardine Matheson & Co. It was founded in 1832 by two Scotsmen, William Jardine and James Matheson.  Jardine had been a ship’s surgeon with the East India Company, while Matheson was the son of a Scottish baronet. The firm today is controlled by the Keswick family. In 1839, the Chinese Emperor launched an anti-opium offensive, which included the confiscation of all opium stocks in the hands of Chinese and foreign merchants. The merchants put up a fight, but were ultimately forced to concede, turning in their opium stocks after being indemnified against losses by British officials.

In response, however, the British launched a propaganda campaign against China, accusing it of violating Britain’s right to “free trade.” Britain sent its fleet to China, to force the Chinese to capitulate to the opium trade. The action, known as the First Opium War, resulted in the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, under which China not only capitulated to the opium trade, but also agreed to pay reparations to the opium runners and gave the British control of the island of Hong Kong. However, the treaty did not specifically legalize opium, so the British launched a second Opium War, which resulted in the 1856 Treaty of Tientsin, which legitimized the opium trade and opened China up to foreigners even more.

As the opium and other trade with China expanded, Britain’s new territory of Hong Kong became a major imperial commercial center. The opium dealers gathered together to form a bank, the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, as the financial flagship of the British opium trade. Over time, the bank—now known as HSBC—would extend its reach into the drug fields of the Middle East and Ibero-America, as befitting its role as the financial kingpin of Dope, Inc.

Role of Secret Societies

In 1783 Lord Shelbourne launched the Chinese opium trade with Scottish merchants from the East India Company and members of the House of Windsor-allied Knights of St. John Jerusalem.

Shelbourne’s chief propagandist was Adam Smith who worked for East India Company, which emerged from the slave-trading Levant Company and later became known as Chatham House, home to the powerful Royal Institute for International Affairs (RIIA). In 1776 the high seas pirate Adam Smith wrote Wealth of Nations, which became the bible of international capitalism.

In the Far East the British organized the Chinese Triad Society, also known as the Society of Heaven and Earth, to smuggle their opium.  Beginning in 1788 the Freemason Grand Lodge of England established lodges in China, one of which was the Triad Society.  Another was known as the Order of the Swastika.

In 1839 William Jardine- a Canton-based opium trafficker- steered Britain into the first Opium War after Chinese officials confiscated his stash. The second Opium War lasted from 1858-1860.  Lord Palmerston commanded both expeditions for the Brits.  He was also the High Priest of Scottish Rite Freemasonry in the British Empire.

Throughout the 19th century the British families of Matheson, Keswick, Swire, Dent, Inchcape, Baring and Rothschild controlled the Chinese heroin traffic.  The Inchcape’s and Baring’s Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company (PONC) transported the dope around the world.

To the US West Coast, the families brought Chinese coolies to build JP Morgan’s railroads, slave laborers who were kidnapped (shanghaied) by the Triads.  The Triads came along too, setting up opium dens in San Francisco and Vancouver and using a network of Chinatowns as a channel for heroin.  This network exists today.  To the US East Coast the families brought African slaves and cotton.  These same families built plantations and became kings of southern cotton on the backs of shanghaied Africans.

The American families Perkins, Astor and Forbes made millions off the opium trade.  The Perkins’ founded Bank of Boston, which is today known as Credit Suisse First Boston.  The Perkins and Morgan families endowed Harvard University.  William Hathaway Forbes was a director at Hong Kong Shanghai Bank shortly after it was founded in 1866.  John Murray Forbes was the US agent for the Barings banking family, which financed most of the early drug trade.  The Forbes family heirs later launched Forbes magazine. Steve Forbes ran for President in 1996.  John Jacob Astor invested his opium proceeds in Manhattan real estate and worked for British intelligence.  The Astor family home in London sits opposite Chatham House.

These families launched the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation (HSBC) after the second Opium War as a repository for their opium proceeds.  HSBC, a subsidiary of the London-based HSBC Holdings, today prints 75% of Hong Kong’s currency, while the British Cecil Rhodes-founded Standard Chartered Bank prints the rest.  HSBC’s Hong Kong headquarters sits next to a massive Masonic Temple.

Freemasonry is a highly secretive society, making it an ideal vehicle for global drugs and arms trafficking.  According to 33rd Degree Mason Manly Hall, “Freemasonry is a fraternity within a fraternity – an outer organization concealing an inner brotherhood of the elect…the one visible and the other invisible.  The visible society is a splendid camaraderie of ‘free and accepted’ men enjoined to devote themselves to ethical, educational, fraternal, patriotic and humanitarian concerns.  The invisible society is a secret and most august fraternity whose members are dedicated to the service of an arcanum arcandrum (sacred secret).”

Wealth derived from selling this Chinese opium during British colonial rule, helped build many landmarks on India’s west coast. The Mahim Causeway, The Sir JJ School of Art, David Sassoon Library and Flora Fountain, landmarks in modern Mumbai, were built by prominent Parsi and Jewish traders from profits made by a flourishing opium and later cotton trade with China.

Prominent families from Mumbai’s past, names that adorn today’s famous institutions such as the Wadia’s, Tata’s, Jejeebhoy’s, Readymoney’s, Cama’s and Sassoon’s sold opium to China through the British. By the end of the nineteenth century, when the opium trade went bust, cotton from India’s western state of Gujarat, which had already developed strong trade links with Canton profited. The Paris’s ploughed profits from the trade with the Chinese back into India, setting up several schools, hospitals and banks. Historical records prove that some of India’s prominent Parsi traders at the time, were founders of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) founded in 1865. For a detailed report read Rothschild colonization of India.

It is this deadly opium empire that Gandhiji was very much conscious about and spoke out against for which he was jailed in 1921 by India’s British rulers for “undermining the revenue”. Having seen generations of Chinese youths rendered docile and passive Gandhijis was concerned over opium and its deadly effects on India which is clear from his letters. These opium production activities ran until 1924 in India and were stopped with the heroic efforts of Mahatma Gandhi who first agitated to remove opium production from India and destruction of China using Indian soil. Finally the British transferred the entire production to Afghanistan in 1924 handing the production to southern Afghani tribals which after 90 years became the golden crescent of opium production. Though the production is in the hands of Afghan tribals the distribution finance market control is still exercised by the same old British business houses or their proxies.

Afghan Opium for Bankers and Terrorists

There is a general impression that Afghanistan has always been the center of opium production. In fact, it has not. Prior to the Soviet invasion in 1979, opium production in Afghanistan was less than 1,000 tons; that grew to 8,200 tons (based on conservative UN Office on Drugs and Crime/UNODC figures) in 2008. Throughout this period, Afghanistan was in a state of war. Following the Soviet invasion, the anti-Soviet powers, particularly, the US, UK, and Saudi Arabia, began generating larger amounts of drug money to finance much of the war to defeat the Soviets. Since 1989, after the Soviet withdrawal, there has been an all-out civil war in Afghanistan, as the US-UK-Saudi-created mujahideen dipped further into the opium/heroin money.

What was happening in Afghanistan during this period that caused opium production to soar to those levels? History shows that the US invasion in 2001 came close to wiping out the Taliban forces; the Afghan people, at least at that point in time, because of the Pakistani-Saudi links to the Taliban and the oppressive nature of the Wahhabi-indoctrinated regime, supported the invading American and NATO forces. That began to change in 2005.

The year 2005 is important in this context, since one of the most damning parts of the US Senate report details HSBC’s relationship with the Saudi-based Al Rajhi Bank, a member of Osama bin Laden’s “Golden Chain” of important al-Qaeda financiers. The HSBC-Al Rajhi relationship has spanned decades; perhaps that is why, even when HSBC’s own internal compliance offices asked that it be terminated in 2005, and even when the US government discovered hard evidence of Al Rajhi’s relationship with terrorism, HSBC continued to do business with the bank until 2010.

In fact, the report said, Al Rajhi’s links to terrorism were confirmed in 2002, when US agents searched the offices of a Saudi non-profit US-designated terrorist organization, Benevolence International Foundation. In that raid, agents uncovered a CD-ROM listing the names of financiers in bin Laden’s Golden Chain. One of those names was Sulaiman bin Abdul Aziz Al Rajhi, a founder of Al Rajhi bank.

Recently an operation by German Customs official revealed that the British Queen financed Osama Bin Laden. German officials in an operation raided two containers passing through Hamburg Port and seized 14,000 documents establishing that Osama bin Laden was funded by UK Queen’s bank Coutts, which is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

HSBC & 26/11 Mumbai Attacks

Why did HSBC not terminate its links with the Al Rajhi in 2005? The answer lies in what was then put in place in Afghanistan to generate large amounts of cash. When it comes to opium/ heroin and offshore banks, Britain rules supreme. In 2005, poppy fields in southern Afghanistan began to bloom, and it became evident to the bankers and the geo-politicians of Britain and the US that cash to support the financial centers and the terrorists could be made right there.

It was announced on Jan. 27, 2006 in the British Parliament that a NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) would be replacing the US troops in Helmand province as part of Operation Herrick. The British 16 Air Assault Brigade would make up the core of the force. British bases were then located in the districts of Sangin, Lashkar Gah, and Gereshk.

As of Summer 2006, Helmand was one of the provinces involved in Operation Mountain Thrust, a combined NATO/Afghan mission targeted at Taliban fighters in the south of the country. In July 2006, the offensive essentially stalled in Helmand, as NATO (primarily British) and Afghan troops were forced to take increasingly defensive positions under heavy insurgent pressure. In response, British troop levels in the province were increased, and new encampments were established in Sangin and Gereshk. In Autumn 2006, some 8,000 British troops began to reach “cessation of hostilities” agreements with local Taliban forces around the district centers where they had been stationed earlier in the Summer, and it is then that drug-money laundering began in earnest.

This drug money, at least a good part of it, is generated in this area with the help of Dawood Ibrahim, who also played a role in helping the Mumbai attackers by giving them the use of his existing network in Mumbai. At the time, Ibrahim worked on behalf of the British, and ran his operation through the British-controlled emirate of Dubai. Drugs came into Dubai through Dawood’s “mules,” protected by the Pakistani ISI and British MI6; the dope was shipped in containers which carried equipment sent there for “repair” from Kandahar and elsewhere in southern Afghanistan. British troops controlled Helmand province, where 53% of Afghanistan’s gargantuan 8,200 tons of opium was produced in 2007.

The drugs were converted, and still are today, to cash in Dubai, where Dawood maintains a palatial mansion, similar to the one he maintains in Karachi. Dubai is a tax-free island-city, and a major offshore banking center. The most common reason for opening an offshore bank account is the flexibility that comes with it.

With the development of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which is the latest free-trade zone to be set up there, flexible and unrestricted offshore banking has become big business. Many of the world’s largest banks already have significant presence in Dubai – big names such as Abbey National Offshore, HSBC Offshore, ABN Amro, ANZ Grindlays, Banque Paribas, Banque de Caire, Barclays, Dresdner, and Merrill Lynch, all have offices in the Emirate already.

In addition to Dubai, most of the offshore banks are located in former British colonies, and all of them are involved in money laundering. In other words, the legitimization of cash generated from drug sales and other smuggled illegitimate goods into the “respectable banks” is the modus operandi of these offshore banks. The drugs that Dawood’s mules carry are providing a necessary service for the global financial system, as well as for the terrorists who are killing innocents all over the world.

In December of 2007, this Britain-run drug-money-laundering and terrorist-networking operation was about to be exposed when Afghan President Hamid Karzai learned that two British MI6 agents were working under the cover of the United Nations and the European Union behind his back, to finance and negotiate with the Taliban. He expelled them from Afghanistan. One of them, a Briton, Michael Semple, was the acting head of the EU mission in Afghanistan and is widely known as a close confidant of Britain’s Ambassador, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles. Semple now masquerades as an academic analyst of Afghanistan, and was associated with the Harvard Kennedy School’s Carr Center. The second man, an Irishman, Mervin Patterson, was the third-ranking UN official in Afghanistan at the time that he was summarily expelled.

These MI6 agents were entrusted by London with the task of using Britain’s 7,700 troops in the opium-infested, Pushtun-dominated, southern province of Helmand to train 2,000 Afghan militants, ostensibly to “infiltrate” the enemy and “seek intelligence” about the lethal arms of the real Taliban. Karzai rightly saw it as Britain’s efforts to develop a lethal group within Afghanistan, a new crop of terrorists.

The drug money thus generated to fund the financial centers and terrorists through HSBC was also responsible for ongoing terrorist attacks that have destabilized most of South Asia. The most important of these was the massive attack on Mumbai.

The mode used to launder such drug money is through diamonds. A 2003 Report assessed various alternative financing mechanisms that could be used to facilitate money laundering and or terrorist financing. Trading in commodities, remittance systems, and currency were assessed on each of their abilities to earn, be moved, and store value. Diamonds were the only alternative financial device that fit into all of these assessment criteria.

Diamonds can be vulnerable for misuse for money laundering and terrorist financing purposes because they can transfer value and ownership quickly, often, with a minimal audit trail. They provide flexibility and an easy transportation of value.

Top diamond traders of the country, several of whom are now settled abroad, figure on what the media calls as the #SwissList, with mostly Mumbai addresses given. Many persons on the list are Gujarati diamond merchants with offices all over world having roots in Palanpur.

However their involvement in not just limited to money laundering. Almost 6 months before 26/11 2008 Mumbai Attacks the Financial Intelligence Unit of India (FIU-IND) (the central national agency responsible for receiving, processing, analyzing and disseminating information relating to suspect financial transactions) was already tracking the diamond industry for suspicious activities by terrorists.

“A year ago, some people from Mumbai began purchasing diamonds worth crores of rupees. When the industry tried to trace the traders, they turned out to be non-existent,” said Vanani.

The FIU traced all foreign transactions of Surat’s diamond industry, especially those emanating from Belgium. It found that a great deal of money was being invested by terrorist groups.

However in May 2014 eight of these Belgium based diamond dealers were given a clean chit by the Income Tax department in the black money case. The I-T department said a probe was initiated against the eight individuals, but there was no proof of tax evasion by them. Why is the Government reluctant in disclosing Black Money related data; be it NDA and even UPA before it ? For a detailed report on the issue read 26/11 – The Black Money Trail.

From the Far East to the Middle East to Ibero-America to India, everywhere the drug trade is flourishing, you will find HSBC. It may not handle the dope, but it does handle the money, making sure that the “citizens above suspicion” who run the empire get their cut of the proceeds.  Now HSBC has been caught red-handed laundering money in the U.S., India, China, Argentina almost everywhere the sun shined through the colonies. This is a bank which has abused us, assaulted our people, and violated the law with abandon. Isn’t it time we set an example and revoke its charter to do business here in India ?

The Private Wealth Management division of the Miami office has always been fun to watch.  Of course, most of the foreign operations in Miami are nothing more than laundering nodes (can anyone say Deutch, Dressdner now Commerz, Banco Santander,  UBS, Leumi,  Lyonnais, Bancocolumbia, Banco Suizo, etc).  US agencies have known this forever and are complicit with these guys.  Nothing new to see here so next story please.

HSBC isn't the only bank doing this.

Great article! It skillfully shows that banks are criminal organizations.

I would venture to say that all big banks engage in the same illegal activities as HSBC. They launder drug money, finance wars, and manipulate world markets.

Abolish the banks.

Iran Contra proved that the US government is complicit in the illegal drug trade.  From the British Tea Company and their opium trade to Vietname to it's heroin.  These bastards, especially Bush Sr need to shot in public. And they blackballed the journalist that had the balls to tell America, poor chap commited suicide.

Fuck the gov and I would like to personal beat the crap outta each person that willingly allows this shit to happen.. but they insist on busting Pokey on the corner selling the same shit moles in the DEA allow into this country. This government is filled with fucking hypocrits.

A very nice and conscise history of Western financial corruption and the "Elites" participation in it. "Do as we say Sheeple, not as we do!" Now that we got ours, it's a "crime" if you attempt anything that competes with us; WTF.

So your a drug dealer and you need to get your money from Florida, to Columbia.  What are you to do?

Easy, you buy 5,000 washing machines and dryers and ship them to various Latin American countries to be sold there.  Cows, new cars, what's the difference.  But ask yourself, does GE or Whirlpool want the business to stop for the "sake fo the children"?

So your an investment bank.  And you know the Mexican cartels manufacter drugs like "ecstacy".  How can you profit?  Hey, why not invest in the stock of the Indian company that makes the raw ingredients and ships them to India?

Same as it ever was.

I LIKED that quote too.

However, I systemized:

All human beings and human civilizations operate as entropic pumps of energy flows, which are misunderstood in the maximally possible backward ways.

Human realities are always organized lies operating robberies. The great fortunes are accumulated by those who did that best, while others were brainwashed to believe in bullshit that made them understand that backwards.

solid summation except for the author's/entity's own propagandizing.  The following is submitted to further broader understanding.

1. There always was a 'shadow' over Safra and so by extension his bank, Republic.  In the 1980/90s while the Republic Bank staff were courteous & professional, my seniors in biz/fin seemed less than enthusiastic to embrace, or become too enmeshed, with Republic.  It was unspoken (and apolitical I might add).  Not paying attention as caught up in focusing on my own 'career', I did not dwell on the hesitation.   Their offices overlooking main NYC public library building offered some of the nicer views of mid-town Manhattan.

2.  As soon as I see references to 'masons'  I start to backaway.  It may sell, and translate to good copy, for the Dan Brown set, but I have never seen/read any convincing indictment per se.  Folks here have to understand that 'conspiracies' are easy to see & portray all around.  But one of the first things you learn as a lawyer is that actual proof of a conspiracy is another thing.  Let me make it easy for readers:  any person of any intellect could frame a plausible conspiracy for, or about, any one of us (especially ZH readers I might add!).  George Washington suppossedly was a mason, hence he (and by conspiratorial-taint extension) all of Amerika is a masonic creation following the 'secret' agenda, etcetera.  Conspiracies do exist...... evidence the mob/organized crime, drug syndicates, etcetera, but again, to make a credible  evidence-based case that can withstand 'english' (yes, the foul british did some good things in the world ... and I am no apologiest for Brits) legal systems, where proof has to be supportable, well, as any experienced prosecutor or detective knows, ..... it is a hard long slog (unless you get lucky or the conspirators, or some of them, are not that bright.....the typical case, as a 'conspiracy' extends out to draw in more and more people to execute---the less capable always bring down the others).

3.  Just above, the english system of law is highlighted (it is not perfect; there are merits to the Napoleonic/continental legal systems ---but that is a separate comparative law discussion).  That said it has taken me a while to come around and view British history more cynically (ironically, but maybe purposefully, reading the swashbuckling James Clavell historically-based novels opens this door quite effectively).  While this ZH post targets HSBC, it may surprise many here (and more broadly around the world who identify more ideologically with global socialism), that an excellent book that deserves more attention is The Shah by Abbas Milani.  It is tightly written.  He is very careful to form conlusions or suggest any.  He is the first ti access recently declassified UK & US national security historical data.  This fortunately coincides with that brief window where pre-Putin Russia under Yeltisn, allowed unfettered access to soviet KGB archives.(Comrade Vlad, for the sake of accurate history, please re-open the archives!).  Some of revelations of that book.  First, while the western/global left loves to portray and fantasize that Iran was destabilized by the CIA, etcetera, the actual truth redirects this back into the British; specifically more than the USA except under the broad veneer of Stalin's clear attention to Iran as an unstable, traditionally muslim, country on his porous southern border that was petroleum rich.  Without wading into details (read The Shah I urge), at worst/best, the CIA gave hesitant support to what appears to be a more British supported destabilization effort.  And in defense of the British, there was a material and substantial Iranian set of constituents who were alarmed at what Stalin's own 'plausible-deniability' actions in Iran had politically wrought.  That 'election' was a soviet political victory they had worked on ahile using some questionable political proxies in the Iranian sphere.  If you want to dispute this, then go read this well-sourced book.   Second, the phenomena of muslim extremism is well-drawn as to how it survived secular attack from bolsheviks/soviets, the west, in-country, socialists, the Ataturk phenomena, etcetera, and re-emerged ultimately, after decades of seemingly quiet 'subservience' (see the long interesting story of Ayatollah Khomeni, which this book largely revolves around in the ending chapters). For this insight alone, it is worth the time to read the book.   Third, Eisenhower was no Brit colonialist and seems to have actively hampered any substantive Brit 'clandestine' initaitive anywhere.  There is lots to that point which you can read about in many venues; this is not news (despite the Dulles is the devil arguments-Eisenhower knew he had a serious soviet/bolshevik threat in terms of the infiltration of key western institutions-----go read the Venona Files was worse than many realize today).  Fourth, The Shah opens up (i.e., provides insight into) the politically hazardous (to my pristine observations & viewpoint) nature of the Kennedy Administration.  Bobby Kennedy sometimes seems like the true Administration 'agent' more so than JFK.  And RFK comes across himself as almost adolescent in his thought process and actions.   That is maybe unfair of me here....but do some reading and this question of RFK's 'maturity' gets repeatedly begged elsewhere: The Shah only indirectly brings attention to it.  Anyways, why was Supreme Court Justice Wm O Douglas regularly consulted about important national security questions like Iran?  <<< that, and all the baggage that goes with it, the 'door opening'  & many other things which Milani carefully cuts criticism of the book relates to what seems paranoia by Milani to explore alot of 'doorways' he stumbles into).  Stuff like that is eye-opening; what does a sitting Supreme Court Justice have to do with serious national security questions (and there is no ethnic or familial reason why Douglas was so directly involved with stuff like Iran and elsewhere - why)?.  And the juvenile back channell stuff with the soviets by JFK team and Carter team and Ted Kennedy, et al, is shockingly naive and almost openly mocked by the soviets.  Fifth, in direct connection to this ZH post, again, the Brit influence and heritage in Iran, is simply underscored by this simple fact:  British Petroleum is the successor to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.  So HSBC, BP,, I bet British Tobacco (Brit Air?) has some interesting history.

4.  No cheap shot intended at India, but the British did not create a long-standing 'caste' system that permanently enshrined a lucky sperm club (brahmins, etc.) with systemic advantge imbued with a religious overtone. And slavery clearly ended in the West (initiated as a phenomena in Britian) when 'overly moralistic' christian preachers rightly argued 'all men are equal in the eyes of God'.  That is a potent and powerful political neutralizer to any ideology that wants to project an 'elite' that knows better than the grubby, incoherent, unruly, undisciplined, ignorant, uncouth, uneducated masses.  No group or inidividual is entitled to rule over anyone unless there is some pre-agreed formula like a 'constitution'.  And for the sake of 'democracy', here is to the future and success of the present Indian political experiment.

5. Taliban as freedom fighters:   please.  I know, there are 'good' taliban and there are the 'bad' taliban - ones that indiscriminately slaughter children, religious adherents counter to theirs, etc.  Sorry, at a certain point, each one of us has to step and and actively disavow.  It is unacceptable to say, 'they do not speak for' me...... one has to actively disavow and counter their 'message'.   That is not happening around the world.  Eveyone hides behind moral equivalence and soapy pseudo-sophisticated reasoning typical of reality insulated academics instead of calling out and actively preventing.

6.  This piece loses a lot of currency as soon as Adam Smith and Wealth of Nations gets thrown directly into the propagandistic mix.  It may or may not be fact that Smith was employed by a family that benefitted from the Brit drug trade.   If anything, the only thing that connection underscores is how prevalent its economic impact was on a broader spectrum of the british populace than we can now imagine.  I can cheap shot very efffectively away by highlighting the ethnic or religious or family or employment backgrounds of any one, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Trotsky, Marx, Engels, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Hitler, etcetera.  Stuff likes that makes this piece look comic book versus 'worth reading' (it undermines the value of much of the information conveyed).  The classic point of Wealth of Nations is that it is the first coherent attempt to articulate the inescapable fact that humans will logically act in their economic self-interest - whether based on some reality or as they may falsely perceive it.   You deny the preceding and you have opened up the gates to an 'elite' running the system for 'your benefiit' (for the children)!  And yet so many ZHers fall into the trap when it suits their emotional convenience.  'Market' based systems, if let to operate as they inherently do under the collective micro-decisions going on underneath, will react and advance more quickly (or overreact in their way but then eventually subside highlighting the folly of the overreaction), can achieve outcomes better and faster than any socialistic or elitist system can ever seek to achieve.  But every generation seems to have to learn the same lessons over and over.  Finally, operating in the shadow the then recent collapse of the bolshevik nightmare called the soviet union, I saw some of the most sophisitcated bartering and influence mechanisms I could ever imagine ........all a direct result of overcoming the blatant and idiotic inefficiencies of a 'command' economy.

7. In its own way, this contention over HSBC, indirectly leads to questions about the current prominence of central banks in so many aspects of normal life....the influence, whose 'interests' do they really serve, their insulation from normal folks, their coverage, what restrictions, if any, do they face, their 'real' mission versus the 'initial' charters.  In the same way, the HSBC saga can begin the chill the air with regards to the Euro, the EU undertaking, etcetera.  Dan Brown, now there are two stories worth being told ....get to work, Mr Brown!

Adam Smith -- "the high seas pirate.......that wrote Wealth of Nations"

Really?  I mean, I know he wrote it, but an high seas pirate?  Do those two go together?  I thought a qualification of being a pirate was the inability to read and write......except treasure maps of course.

Lot of info in this article.  Some good stuff but way too many "factoids" to just swallow hook-line-and-sinker without independent research.  I'll go with, "where there's smoke, there's a fire" but a pirate that rights economic masterpieces?  Probably not spreading that news around until further review.

Sir Henry Morgan (Harry Morgan in Welsh; ca. 1635 – 25 August 1688) was a Welsh privateer, pirate and admiral of the English navy[3][4][5]

By 1661 Commodore Christopher Mings appointed Morgan captain of his first vessel and Morgan played a key role in the Sack of Campeche in 1663.

A privateer or "corsair" was a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign vessels during wartime. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having vessels be commissioned into regular service as warships. The crew of a privateer might be treated as prisoners of war by the enemy country if captured. (Little Difference between Pirate and Privateer. Royals give a letter of Marque to a captain so that he can capture ships legally. Trade & Slavery seem to go hand in hand after captures, Trading Companies seem to engage in questionable activities in this manner).

Pieter Pietersen Heyn (Hein) (25 November 1577 – 18 June 1629) was a Dutch admiral and privateer for the Dutch Republic during the Eighty Years' War between the United Provinces and Spain. In 1607, he joined the Dutch East India Company and left for Asia, returning with the rank of captain (of the Hollandia) five years later.

Magnus Heinason (or Mogens Heinesøn) (1548 – 18 January 1589) was a Faroese naval hero, trader and privateer, served William the Silent and his son Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange for 10 years as a privateer, fighting the Spanish in the Dutch Revolt. Magnus Heinason was given the trading rights to the Faroe Islands by Frederick II of Denmark and Norway from 1559 to 1588. Later he received letters of marque to sink or capture pirate ships and English merchant ships.

Jean Bart (21 October 1650 – 27 April 1702) was a French naval commander and privateer. When he was young, Bart served in the Dutch navy under Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.[3] When war broke out between France and the United Provinces in 1672, he entered the French service. Since persons not of noble birth in those days couldn't obtain the rank of officer in the navy, he became captain of one of the Dunkirk privateers. Unable to receive a command in the navy due to his low birth, he held an irregular sort of commission, but he had such success, however, that he became a lieutenant in 1679.

Sir Andrew Barton (c. 1466 – 2 August 1511), Scottish sailor from Leith, served as High Admiral of the Kingdom of Scotland. (Privateer with letters of Marque, called a Pirate)

Sir Francis Drake, vice admiral (c.?1540 – 27 January 1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era.

Sir George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland was a successful privateer against Spanish shipping in the Caribbean.

Admiral Sir John Hawkins (also spelled as Hawkyns) (1532 – 12 November 1595) was an English naval commander and administrator, merchant, navigator, shipbuilder, privateer and slave trader, As treasurer (1577) and controller (1589) of the Royal Navy, Hawkins rebuilt older ships and helped design the faster ships that withstood the Spanish Armada in 1588, he was well educated in the system of mathematics of the mathematician and mystic, Dr. John Dee.

Sir Michael Geare (b. 1565-?) was a 16th-century English sailor, privateer and merchant.

Sir Christopher Myngs (1625–1666), English admiral and pirate, came of a Norfolk family

Meet The Brotherhood of Death:

Skull & Bones Information

It all began at Yale. In 1832, General William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft put together a super secret society for the elite children of the Anglo-American Wall Street banking establishment. William Huntington Russell’s step-brother Samuel Russell ran "Russell & Co.", the world’s largest OPIUM smuggling operation in the world at the time. Alphonso Taft is the Grandfather of our ex-president Howard Taft, the creator of the Forerunner to the United Nations.

Only 15 seniors are picked each year by the former graduating class. They are required as a part of their initiation ceremony to lie naked in a coffin and recite their sexual history. This method allows other members to control the individual by threatening to reveal their innermost secrets if they do not “go-along”.

George Bush’s father as well as George Bush were and are members of Skull & Bones. A major key figure in Skull & Bones was William Averall Harriman. Pamela Harriman supplied the funds to elect Bill Clinton to office. Harriman was THE major backer of the Democratic Party for over 50 years. Major players in Skull & Bones have been linked to the financing of both world wars and the creation of many think-tanks and Universities in this country. Bush’s father was a major contributor to the “Hitler Project” as well as the build-up of the Soviet Union. Thus, leading to the inevitable World Wars and the eventual set-up of the United Nations in America. I first learned about the workings of “Skull and Bones” in 1990-91 during the Gulf War.

The Secret Origins of Skull & Bones

The story begins at Yale, where three threads of American social history -- espionage, drug smuggling and secret societies -- intertwine into one.

Elihu Yale was born near Boston, educated in London, and served with the British East India Company, eventually becoming governor of Fort Saint George, Madras, in 1687. He amassed a great fortune from trade and returned to England in 1699. Yale became known as quite a philanthropist; upon receiving a request from the Collegiate School in Connecticut, he sent a donation and a gift of books. After subsequent bequests, Cotton Mather suggested the school be named Yale College, in 1718.

A statue of Nathan Hale stands on Old Campus at Yale University. There is a copy of that statue in front of the CIA’s headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Yet another stands in front of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts (where George H.W. Bush (’48) went to prep school and joined a secret society at age twelve).

Nathan Hale, along with three other Yale graduates, was a member of the "Culper Ring," one of America’s first intelligence operations. Established by George Washington, it was successful throughout the Revolutionary War. Nathan was the only operative to be ferreted out by the British, and after speaking his famous regrets, he was hanged in 1776. Ever since the founding of the Republic, the relationship between Yale and the "Intelligence Community" has been unique.

In 1823, Samuel Russell established Russell and Company for the purpose of acquiring opium in Turkey and smuggling it to China. Russell and Company merged with the Perkins (Boston) syndicate in 1830 and became the primary American opium smuggler. Many of the great American and European fortunes were built on the "China" (opium) trade.

One of Russell and Company’s Chief of Operations in Canton was Warren Delano, Jr., grandfather of Franklin Roosevelt. Other Russell partners included John Cleve Green (who financed Princeton), Abiel Low (who financed construction of Columbia), Joseph Coolidge and the Perkins, Sturgis and Forbes families. (Coolidge’s son organized the United Fruit company, and his grandson, Archibald C. Coolidge, was a co-founder of the Council on Foreign Relations.)

William Huntington Russell (’33), Samuel’s cousin, studied in Germany from 1831-32. Germany was a hotbed of new ideas. The "scientific method" was being applied to all forms of human endeavor. Prussia, which blamed the defeat of its forces by Napoleon in 1806 on soldiers only thinking about themselves in the stress of battle, took the principles set forth by John Locke and Jean Rosseau and created a new educational system. Johan Fitche, in his "Address to the German People," declared that the children would be taken over by the State and told what to think and how to think it.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel took over Fitche’s chair at the University Of Berlin in 1817, and was a professor there until his death in 1831. Hegel was the culmination of the German idealistic philosophy school of Immanuel Kant.

To Hegel, our world is a world of reason. The state is Absolute Reason and the citizen can only become free by worship and obedience to the state. Hegel called the state the "march of God in the world" and the "final end". This final end, Hegel said, "has supreme right against the individual, whose supreme duty is to be a member of the state." Both fascism and communism have their philosophical roots in Hegellianism. Hegellian philosophy was very much in vogue during William Russell’s time in Germany.

When Russell returned to Yale in 1832, he formed a senior society with Alphonso Taft (’33). According to information acquired from a break-in to the "tomb" (the Skull and Bones meeting hall) in 1876,

"Bones is a chapter of a corps in a German University.... General Russell, its founder, was in Germany before his Senior Year and formed a warm friendship with a leading member of a German society. He brought back with him to college, authority to found a chapter here."

So class valedictorian William H. Russell, along with fourteen others, became the founding members of "The Order of Scull and Bones," later changed to "The Order of Skull and Bones".

William Russell went on to become a general and a state legislator in Connecticut. Alphonso Taft was appointed U.S. Attorney General, Secretary of War (a post many "Bonesmen" have held), Ambassador to Austria, and Ambassador to Russia (another post held by many "Bonesmen"). His son, William Howard Taft (’87), is the only man to be both President of the United States and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Well, palmereldritch, it seems an unfortunate fact of life that if one wants to become socially successful, one has to join some organized crime gang, and the bigger and better organized crime gang one joins, then the more socially successful one may thereby become.

Personally, I have never been much of "joiner" ... especially since it became clear to me several decades ago that the established systems were criminally insane, and therefore, "success" obtained within those systems was quite problematic, and becoming more so ... But nevertheless, it continues to actually be the case that those who join the biggest and best organized crime gangs may thereby apply their talents to become the most "successful" inside of those systems.

palmereldritch's picture

Perhaps the emphasis on bones underscores the target recruits for demonic enlistment and their future victims: the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak...

De-humanization is fundamental to stripping empathy from society and enabling psychopaths to flourish in their myriad predatory forms: the brain-dead zombie media, the subversion of the education system, today's Ponzi finance abuses, torture in the military, remote killing by MIC tech, Big Pharma pushers, GMO and on and on...not the least in secret elite clubs that thrive on such sick peer pressure

In the end all you can hope for is sharing membership with individuals who have a like-minded commitment to basic human decency.

An acceptable article.

However, it is nothing new to me that the banksters were able to skim the cream of the profits from making drugs illegal, by laundering drug money. (Systems supposed to prevent drug money laundering tend to only be used against the smaller players, while the biggest players are enabled to do so without being caught, or without significant penalties when detected.)

Most of my previous comments posted on Zero Hedge for the last couple of years are about what happens if one seriously thinks about how and why governments have become the biggest form of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals, in order to think through and past the biggest bullies' bullshit world view. Since that bullshit world view was built into the structure of the dominant natural languages, as well as into the dominant philosophy of science, it is quite difficult for most people to go through the astronomically amplified magnitudes of cognitive dissonance required to assimilate any radically different world view.

Although opium and its derivatives were the origins of the systems of legalized lies backed by legalized violence which made that business so profitable in the past, it was later the criminalization of cannabis which became the majority of the drug war, and so, the matching majority of the black market money laundered, eventually through banks. Therefore, to gain perspective upon the degree to which Neolithic Civilizations have become runaway criminal insanities, the single simplest symbol, and most extreme particular example, are the marijuana laws, which were based on the huge lies that "marijuana is almost as bad as murder," when the facts were that hemp is the single best plant on the planet for people, for food, fiber, fun and medicine.

Neolithic Civilizations were always based on being able to back up lies with violence, whereby the most crucial of all the other forms of herding and farming was the herding and farming of some human beings by other human beings. The benefits of the development of irrigation, etc., can not be separated from the slavery systems that actually made those possible. Neolithic Civilizations' social pyramid systems were primarily based upon the agricultural revolutions, and one of the first and foremost crops cultivated was cannabis. It therefore indicates how criminally insane that civilization became when the single best plant for human beings to cultivate had its cultivation be criminalized, which then created the single biggest black market substance, which provided the money to become the backbone of organized crime, whose brain is the international banksters, while its heart is the established banking system.

The banksters and their banking systems are the ones that benefited the most, in every possible way, from criminalizing cannabis. (They also were covertly controlling governments, through the feedbacks in their ability to capture control over the public "money" systems, and the funding of the political processes) Although that criminalization of cannabis was historically related to outlawing opium, the situation that later developed made the black market due to pot prohibition become much bigger than the black market for opium and its derivatives.

The basic systems were always debt slavery backed by wars based on deceits. However, while few people fully recognized that, even fewer went through enough profound paradigm shifts required to more fully understand how and why that social situation developed. (While it is still getting worse, faster, because the self-fulfilling prophesies of the "war on terror" are now taking over from the previous "drug wars," in ways which are becoming orders of magnitude worse!)

Since the biggest bullies' bullshit dominates the natural languages that we use, as well as the basic philosophy of science. The contradictions apparent in the drug wars, whereby the single best plant for people ended up being misrepresented as being "almost as bad as murder" are merely one of the tiniest tips of the iceberg, regarding the reasons how and why human civilizations actually operated according to the principles and methods of organized crime.

While most people tend to not understand that at all, because they have been so brainwashed to believe in the biggest bullies' bullshit world view, I also find that the few who do begin to recognize those social facts still do not recognize that their bogus "solutions" to those political problems also continue to operate within the biggest bullies' bullshit world view, due to the degree to which that world view has been so deeply encoded into the languages that we speak, and the philosophy of science that we presume.

On Zero Hedge, there is way more understanding, especially in some of the comments, presented about the degree to which the banksters have created their form of the biggest bullies' bullshit, as the dominate schools of economics. However, in my view practically nobody is able and willing to go through the severe cognitive dissonance disruptions which are necessary to attempt to gain better perspective upon the degree to which the dominant languages and philosophy of science have become expressions of the biggest bullies' bullshit world view.

Everything stated in the article above most applies now to cannabis, since about 75% of the war against some drugs became the war against marijuana, and that matched the corresponding amounts of black market money eventually being laundered through the banking systems. To fully recognize that the marijuana laws were Huge Lies backed by Lots of Violence is to recognize that applies to almost everything else, throughout systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, dominating everything that civilization is directed to be doing by the international banksters. However, understanding that merely skims the surface of the deeper situation ...

It is difficult to explain to most people what the deeper levels of that are, since they have to comprehend the degree to which they basically think is all bullshit, in order to order to more fully recognize how and why the "war on drugs" was always based on bullshit promoted by the biggest bullies for their own ulterior benefit. The vast majority of people have been profoundly brainwashed to believe in bullshit, for generation after generation, for thousands of years. That has gotten worse, faster, at an exponential rate. We appear to be approach the times of Peak Bullshit, along with Peak Everything Else. Therefore, the degree of cognitive dissonance manifesting in the minds of many people is also approaching some possible times of Peak Insanities, due to the anomalies that are accumulating that are demonstrating the degree to which everything that most people were taught to believe is more and more being demonstrated to have always been based on bullshit, promoted through history by the biggest bullies, who have become the biggest banksters during the previous few Centuries.

There have been many articles appearing on Zero Hedge which discuss how more and more people are beginning to notice that something is wrong, because the banksters' bullshit is becoming so blatant that they are being forced more and more to notice that. For many of those, it has only been since the financial crises of 2008 (or perhaps since the events that happened on 9/11/2001, leading to the development of the justifications for allowing those later financial crises to develop), that have resulted in more people paying attention to the social facts that previously only extremely tiny groups of intellectuals were somewhat aware of.

However, in the cannabis community, for several decades, people have been thinking more and more about how and why it was possible that marijuana laws were based on nothing but huge lies, backed by violence, for decade after decade, in ways where more rational evidence and logical arguments never made any difference to that situation. I have been thinking about that for several decades, and some of my conclusions were outlined in my comment above, as well as many other comments that I have previously posted on Zero Hedge.

Is Hemp Oil not a great energy source? I didn't see it on your list above. Just thinking about henry Ford & John D. Rockefeller...

Also is Marijuana or Hemp the first crop raised by Neolithic Man? I wonder if I have to go to a big city underground book store or Amsterdam to find that info since I am in the boonies of the middle of USA.

I've seen road side restaurants in coastal areas marked:

- Mar Y Soda (maybe Mar means ocean, like fish dishes, and soda is soda drink, no alcohol usually)

- Mar Y Juana ...has me thinking, could be place to eat on simple plastic tables and chair along a highway with a plant they called Juana

Radical Marijuana's picture

I believe that the first ever automobile ran on hemp oil fuel.

Cannabis is one species of plant. The difference between industrial hemp and marijuana is like the difference between albinos or white people, compared to relative coloured people, or black people. All the different kinds of pot plants are analogous to all the different kinds of human beings. The resin on the flowers protects the immature seeds from too much UV light. THC is like a natural sun screen for the pot plant, like melanin is in the human skin. Plants that grew in higher altitude tropics developed lots of genetic ability to get sun tanned. Plants that grew in low altitudes, but higher latitudes, had genetics which did not produce as much resin on their flowers.

There are extremely strong analogies between people and pot plants. Total criminalization was like slavery. Medical marijuana is black pot that is alright as long as it comes wrapped in a white lab coat. Industrial hemp is being allowed, but only as albino pot. All of that is like total slavery breaking down to become like apartheid or segregation.

The cultivation of cannabis history is lost in time. There are some evidence of that being way back, 10,000 years, and then much more evidence about 5,000 years ago. The plant itself is at least tens of millions of year old. There was probably no clear beginning to the cultivation of cannabis ... For thousands of years, it was one of the most cultivated of plants, until in the 20th Century huge lies about "marijuana" criminalized all cannabis, and put the hemp industries out of business.

Of course, that was all legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, which drove the creation of increasingly psychotic situations. Marijuana is currently being "legalized" in some places in the worst possible ways, because that is being done mostly in manners that compromise with the old lies, rather than based on more hemp truth. Moreover, the same basic social systems that made it possible to huge lies to become the law, and be enforced for decade after decade, continue to control everything else.

Marijuana laws are evil. Monetary laws are extremely evil. Therefore, everything to do with both money and marijuana became orders of magnitude more evil than can be comprehended, without taking a much more radical perspective on the basic problem that our civilization is based on social pyramid systems that back up lies with violence. The truth about the hemp plant has been systematically suppressed for a long, long time. There is no good language to discuss that problem, like there is no good language to discuss the overall problems that the biggest gangsters control governments

Thanks for the reply. I like what you write here. You seem to cross many disciplines and write better than I do.

I wonder how I lift myself up to your level. This year I am thinking about cutting out alcohol since I have some health issues and have a long history of drinking. This is another jumping off point for a topic.

Alcohol is much worse for the body, mind, and soul that pot. In my case I can't smoke anything at all anyway. But I know cancer patients find ways to cook, ingest, or vaporize pot.

Anyway. Alcohol is much worse for Insurance, Health Expenses, Social ills, accidents, driving accidents, brain and liver damage.

Of course Alcohol can be used for cooking, in medicine, in preservation, in culture, as an economic product, and as Energy. I heard that Alcohol as a word traces back to Mesopotamia along with many things like Bitumen, Naphta, Petroleum.

Funny thing cultivating of different grasses or part of the wheat family goes back to the oldest history as well. Ironic that we call pot...grass and they are both the oldest crops cultivated.

The most interesting thing you said was about "the same basic social systems". I'm guessing we need more vocabulary to discuss our social system and nail this down. Sometimes I am not up to the challenge as I need an orientation to the subject. But as Democrats, Voters, Citizens of Responsibility, Citizens of Education, Creator of our current government... we should all be up to debates and national referendums if they came to be.

I really like what you said about Legalization being done all wrong because of our ignorance or lack of control.

Good info about hemp Oil too. thanks.

I keep thinking that "Gaslighting" is the best word for a government that tells us it is up to us to change government, but they control the K-12, the Press, the History, the Cover-up of History, and they control the narrative.

I noticed the narrative about the use of the Hegalian Perspective to shape "Education" in Germany, England, and USA after a Prussian Defeat on the Battlefield. Interesting that we have this Philosophical Base that shapes our social construct (If that is the way to say it).

Philosophy seems to be one approach to sorting out the logic our our social systems. But we don't want to spend too much time studying the wrong philosophy. It has been a while for me, so I'll have to try to get an overview this week to reorient.

Radical Marijuana's picture

I have made it my personal priority to spend most of my adult life learning about these things. Most people could not afford that luxury, given their other commitments.

Alcohol is the foundation chemical of organic chemistry. It should be abundant and cheap, but then, all other various better drugs should also be abundant and cheap too. People should have learned to live with abundance, rather than artificial scarcity.

I do not think it was any "accident" that some of the best drugs are the most illegal, while many of the worst drugs are the most available. There is no magic power in any molecule that forces people to abuse it. That power is in their environment, and especially in their social circumstances.

Usually, changing habits requires more to have new ones to switch too, rather than just stopping the old ones. Smoking pot is the worst way to consume it, although, of course, I have nothing against the basic cycle of biological life being sunlight, steam, smoke and sugar.

Our education systems and mass media have buried us extremely deep under massive piles of the biggest bullies' bullshit, it is hard to get out of such deep pits, inside other deeper pits, especially as even more bullshit is always being dumped on top of us. However, we have no good choices but to continue to try!
