'Sceptical' Schaeuble Sounds Off: "I Feel Sorry For The Greeks & Their Irresponsible Government"

Tyler Durden's picture

Whether this is more economic sabre-rattling or not, Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is not making any Greek friends this morning. During a radio interview on Deutschlandfunk, Schaeuble exclaimed that he was against  a deal "just for the sake of a compromise," and lashed out that "I feel sorry for the Greeks. The new Greek government behaves irresponsible." As Reuters reports, Schaeuble remains "very sceptical" and nobody wants to give Greece any more money "without guarantees," which is odd because within the last year - trend-chasing asset managers had appeared willing to throw good money after bad at it until now.

  • *SCHAEUBLE: GREEK GOVERNMENT HASN'T MOVED
  • *SCHAEUBLE SAYS GREEK PROGRAM MUST BE FULFILLED
  • SCHAEUBLE SAYS: WHAT I HEARD SO FAR DIDN'T STRENGTHEN MY OPTIMISM ABOUT GREECE

As Reuters reports,

Asked if the Eurogroup of euro zone finance ministers would find a solution for Greece's debt problems, Schaeuble told Deutschlandfunk: "From what I've heard about the technical talks over the weekend, I'm very sceptical, but we will get a report today and then we'll see."

Schaeuble said Germany did not want Greece ot leave the euro zone, but that the new government in Athens had to fulfil the core conditions of its bailout programme and that it was not about finding a compromise deal "just for the sake of a compromise".

"The problem is that Greece has lived beyond its means for a long time and that nobody wants to give Greece money anymore without guarantees," Schaeuble said, noting that Athens had to stick to agreed reforms to become competitive.

Schaeuble added that the new Greek government was behaving "quite irresponsibly" right now and that it was no help to insult others who have supported the country in the past.

Given this sentiment it is hardly surprising that...

A Greek leftist newspaper close to the ruling party in Athens published a cartoon last week which showed Schaeuble in a Nazi uniform.

He is quoted saying "we insist on soap from your fat" and "we are discussing fertilizer from your ashes", references to the fate of Jews in Nazi death camps.

*  *  *

And finally, Schaeuble leaves us with this...

"as long as the Greek government doesn't want a programme I don't have to think about options."

So to summarize where we stand - Greece "isn't bluffing" and "won't cross red lines" ... and the rest of Europe is saying forget about it then.

"stole from the Bank of Greece"? I doubt there was much to steal - Greece was a bankrupt in 90 of the past 192 years. Hope dies last, but it dies. But anyway, I hate to break the news, the deadline for claiming reparations just recently expired in February 1958. But, hey, the clocks always ran a bit slower in Greece, didn't they?

Well, contrary to the Greeks, I do have a brain of my own and thus I reserve the right to doubt what I believe and what not.

Again, it is time to buy a new clock (just use some of the money that other people are throwing at you): If Greece had any legitimate claims over the peanuts that the Germans allegedly stole from you (which I don't doubt, they probably did), then Greece should have submitted its claims more than 60 years ago. Perhaps it was on an extended lunch break and missed the deadline?

It is "on the wrong side", not "in the wrong side". Perhaps you should watch CNN more often to polish your English? But, yes, I do agree that US media is crap, overly simplicistic, narrow-minded and displays a lack of understanding of the "big picture". I thus never read much more than the headline and resort to other countries' media for more intelligent reporting.

With such mutual trust and respect between the two, hammering out a deal today should be no problem.

They should show up to the meeting "open carry" just to make their point.  Plus, they might need to shoot their way back out of the room when it's over.

Schaeuble is under pressure from his Deutsche Bank friends, who want to keep on changing Greece debt into EU-taxpayers debt.

But that doesn´t work, if Greece does not ´take´ the money, of which of course Greece won´t see a cent anyway.

Just like Ukraine, this is not a Germany vs Greece issue any more then Ukraine is a Europe vs Russia issue.

In both cases, it is the US making demands on Europe.

Greece could default completely  and it would not be the end of the Euro. The Euro system was built for this. Member countries could have defaults without having the hyper depreciation of their currency.

Spitzer, most of what you say is true. But, there is the little problem of the rest of the PIIGS wanting the same treatment, the EU is in trouble my friend, just look at their balance sheet, and now their QE.

It is the same all over the world, the CB's have printed worthless FIAT, and a currency war is in effect, a race to the bottom, which will lead to trade war, then war war...you gotta get past the "isms", it's really about the people, not the idiots in charge! What I mean by that, because I am often misinterpreted, is the people need to find the spine to make wholesale changes to the fucked up systems in place right now!

That's why I think the people in control are going to allow Greece to leave, and then use their control of finance to make it as miserable as possible on the Greeks. Lock the. Out of the bond markets , and use their control of the media to broadcast the Greeks misery all over the international media. If I was an evil motherfucker that's what I would do. Let them leave, and, not letting a good crisis go to waste , make sure everyone sees how miserable the Greeks are now that they have left the glorious EU. The EU may well survive Greece leaving, but if the Italians , Portugal, etc leave, it's game over. So, using my control over the media, I make sure the plebes in the other PIIGS countries get the message loud and clear: this is what happens if you don't obey us. "To encourage the others" as Voltaire would say.

A Greek exit instantly puts Greece in the pocket of Putin. Don't kid yourself. Russia could help Greece. Europe and the U.S. by proxy can't use exit as a threat. But they also can't seem to afford a Greek Iceland style default. You would think that the Fed could just cover it with printing but they are probably worried about their credibility

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 13:06 | 5790258 Spitzer

I still don't see how a bunch of Iceland style defaults in Europe will kill the currency. Indevidual defaults within a zone, similar to muni defaults in the US, does not mean the currency will disappear the next day

If you are railing against the greedy banksters, and whores in govt, the I agree with you!

If you also also are against the Jewish people to have a state, then you are wrong. Zionism is Jewish statehood. I have no problem with giving the Palestinians the same rights. There needs to be justice everywhere, not just in some places.

There are a lot of Jewish banskters, just like there are gentile ones, it is generalizations that can get one into the quagmire!

The US out of the UN and the UN out of the US!

Well, you are wrong, Zionism is a lot more than a "Jewish" State....

And oh, I agree, give the Jewish (I forget, is it a race, is it a religion?) people a home.

Their home is where their home has always been - somewhere in the heart of europe, to and including the land of Khazaria.   I mean should I demand "justice" from you Unix, and take occupancy of your home BY FORCE, and then throw you out in the yard, but blockade the yard?  Hmm, "justice" indeed....

Now, regarding your statement that there are a lot of Jewish Banksters as there Gentile ones - I don't agree.  In fact, there are A LOT more Gentile bankers than Zionist banksters; but the gentile bankers usually run your local Savings and Loans branch, whilst your Zionist counterpart, well, I don't know what you think of Greenspan, Bernanke, Yellen, Fischer, as well as Jacob Lew, Wolfowitz of the World Bank, the Warburgs, the Rothschilds, and the Goldsmiths, before them...

I mean in the Quality of Bankster dept, the Zionists win hands down.  Which means, we as a majority of this good earth Lose, and I'm not for dying on my knees.

Fuck Zionism!

I will agree on your list of names and the banking cabal, no differences with you there. Lest you forget, at the end of WWI, Palestine was created by the Brits, so what Syria, Iraq, etc, by whim and farce.  Then they helped form the Jewish state, hypocrites all.

However, if one goes back to the ancient times, Israel was a state, overrun by many forces, and in the end, they were scattered to the wind and lost their state.

Let's then focus on the here and now, and tear apart the secret cabals, which I've spoken about many times, even on this thread. They want us to fight each other, to distract us from our mission, to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law for their crimes!

The.Harmless.Jew's picture

Alas, Unix, you appear somewhat misguided...

First of all, you keep talking about "they" as if "they" are a radically different entity than the oppressive Zionists and their cohorts.

Second of all, the Jewish people that you're talking about aren't Hebrews - if the majority were - at least you might have an albeit flimsy case to make where you can try to lay claim to Palestine, but you are way off:  The Israelis are largely European and Khazars.  They treat Hebrews, Ethiopan, and Sepheradic Jews like second, and third class citizens.  There's your Cabal right there fella! But even then, it campares not to the treatement of the palestinians.

Third of all, the People of Cannan pre-date your fictional people of Israel.  So your "acient time" argument fails - instantly.

Fourth of all, the existance of the current state of israel is a disgraceful terrorist creation of an apartheid state (let's not forget history remember?), and for you to put your faux-voice-of-reason here, on Zero Hedge of all places, won't wash.

But you know what? Now, you've got me interested I'd like to know where you are from - and tell me, do you lay claim to this place of yours to Acient times?

Your secret Cabals aren't so secret fella, We've all been talking about them for years.... And please, return to your hasbara school for further "education", before you try your child ziocon pop-history clap-trap here.

Fuck Zionism.

I live in Germany.

Schaeuble is well respected and very intelligent. These remarks don't really fit his MO, in my opinion.

I think he's just trying to give the masses a little encouragement in the sense that someone higher up knows what they're thinking. Germans like a strong personality to take control during shaky times (Der Starke Mann) and Schaeuble may just be trying to portray that to keep things calm.

That said, he probably knows they're fucked. He's just too smart to be saying what he is now. He's generally much more analytical.

Maybe it's a Good Cop/Bad Cop type of thing. Mutti will give in if she has to, and people would accept that because they trust her judgement. Schaeuble may be speaking out to make the populace think that someone up there is putting up some kind of a fight.

Again, just my opinion.

Schäuble is so intelligent he is actually stumbling over his intelligence, compare with McNamara in the late 60's.

I am tired of the whole thing, do something or not!

In the past, Greece turned to socialism, which has failed miserably, and they spent too much of other peoples money, it's as simple as that. Now they have elected communists, and think they are going to magically fix their monetary ills with backroom deals, and more free stuff for the masses. Incredible really...I think that defines insanity!

The EU, are the vampire squid, they've 'invested' in Greece, so as to get their evil fangs into them, so as to own them outright.

I think both entities are evil and manipulating...same thing has happened to other countries!

In the US, our vampire squid, is long in the tooth now, and has boxed themselves in, so there is really not much else they can do but moar QE to infinity.

Meanwhile the average Joe in all of these places suffer under oppression, taxation without representation, getting spied on, committing us to wars without our consent, and regulated to the point of not being able to walk down the street without committing a felony!

Every government lives beyond its means which is why I rail against government more then the corrupt banking system.

You are correct. Just keep in mind that it is Government that empowers these banks and run national debts for their country. Banks are nothing but loan sharks. And if you deal with the mafia, expect to pay some price. They aren't loaning money for free.

You say:

Every government lives beyond its means which is why I rail against government more then the corrupt banking system.

The truth is that they are two sides of the same coin.  The people running both .gov and .bank go to the same parties, know the same people, and are all connected to each other's speed dial.  Don't waste your time distinguishing between them.

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 12:56 | 5790191 sessinpo

There is a very big differnce.

Politicians are elected by the people of just about every political system, communism to democratic to our supposed republic of the US. They are there, supposedly, to defend the people according to their constitution or mandate.

Bankers are not elected. Their purpose is for profit. And while I am not against profit, I am against the collusion of politicians and bankers to corrupt the system financially and then to get bailed out by the serfs. Thus it is two different coins. Bankers would not have the ability they have without the collusion and permission of government.

And by the way, financial crisis have occurred hundreds of years before the global banking system. Thus it wasn't banking that caused the problem. Yet, government was there all along.

Shall I call you a corrupt banker if your loan your kid some money? Banking isn't the problem. It is there for a good reason. It provides the funding for the entrepreneur to start a business with funding he can't get elsewhere. But government gives banks power beyond usury. For example, why hasn't government put the dick Corzine in prison? We all know he belongs there. Bank accounts are also subject to seizure for bail-ins.

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 13:00 | 5790233 SofaPapa

"Bankers are not elected."

Neither are politicians.  The last little bit of the process may have the stamp of approval of the population, but the selection process for who is on any given ballot is done through... money.  And that money is controlled by... the banks (with the central bank as their political clearinghouse).  The third leg of this stool, btw, is the media (my personal candidate for the worst of the three).

Lastly, your final example seems odd to me.  It seems to argue better for my case than yours.  Why isn't Corzine in prison?  Because he's part of the group who controls both .gov and .bank. No?

I actually have personal experience of an acquaintance of mine with a job first in .gov, and later in .bank.  It's the same people.  We all know about the revolving door.  Why do you insist on distinguishing?

Yes politicians are elected. Now you may argue that electeions are rigged or bought and that is your perogative. I won't disagree with that.

Bankers, however, do not go through the election process and scrutiny. Do you know of all the banker's DUI or Bush's? Is a banker's birth country looked at like Obama's?

And as for Corzine, it is up to the Government to punish him. The banking system won't do that. Thus Government is failing in its duties. So as my original point is:

"Every government lives beyond its means which is why I rail against government more then the corrupt banking system."

In other words, government is the problem. Government was around before global banking and all these conspiracies of cabals or jewish evil. Yet, there was slavery and great economic desparaty. So what is your answer for that history? That is why I insist on distinguishing. Because its the truth.

Yeah Yeah , here we go with the usual ignorant litany of Germans are Nazi monsters. We have just in the last few days passed the 70th anniversary of the greatest mass murder in a single day in all of history. Approximately half a million civilian men ,women, children and babies were burnt alive on Febuary 13th 1945 in the totally non strategic , non militarised German city of Dresden. Thats almost twice as many people as died in German concentration camps (280,000 approx by Red Cross estimates mostly thru starvation and typhus towards the end of the war cauused by, yep , you guessed it , allied bombing of supply routes).700,000 phosphorous bombs dropped in one night , thats almost one and a half for every fried alive civilian . Enough of this victors propaganda and lies coming from media and Hollywood owned by you know joo. If Hitler and the Nazis were monsters well so too was Churchill and the Brits and Roosevelt and the Yanks and certainly Stalin and the Bolshevics.

The Silent Holocaust.

Mon, 02/16/2015 - 12:58 | 5790228 JR
JR's picture

I read The Silent Holocaust in this link: it is an incredible report.

As the Irish Savant says:

“I don't blame the Allied bomber crews who had little choice when carrying out their grisly task.  The true criminals were Churchill and his 'scientific advisor' Frederick Alexander Lindeman, This German-born psychopath seemed obsessed, like so many of his Jewish co-ethnics, with the literal extermination of the German people. He also demonstrated that extraordinary Jewish capacity to appear from nowhere and miraculously land at the right hand side of the seat of power. And Lindeman had a cunning plan. He had calculated that that every 40 tons of bombs dropped on built-up areas would "make 4,000 to 8,000 people homeless." And, as historian Max Hastings drily observed "[h]oped to create a nation of refugees, and no doubt also a good many corpses under the rubble, although he was too genteel to say so."

In the years following the end of WWII--termed "history's most terrifying peace" by Time Magazine-- and the trial of surviving German leaders conducted by the victor, the Western press has been the constant spokesman for the Zionist view of history, the constant drumbeat of Holocaust stories, the intimidation of any individuals who do not repeat constantly the “never again” mantra.

And, now, we have a 93-year-old former Auschwitz death camp officer who will go on trial in Germany on April 21,2015, charged with at least 300,000 counts of accessory to murder…

This act of war cowardice on Dresden and above trial underscore an importance that is still in our modern life being ignored: the power and the horror does not lie only with the German people.

Consider developments after WWII:

In 1947, a defeated, divided, truncated, occupied Germany was a mass of rubble, its economy a desperate scratching for subsistence.

Although the Marshall Plan enabled Germany’s people to rebuild a free society and a free economy, a predecessor blueprint for genocide became the on-going principal occupation policy directive – a policy that aimed at the destruction of a nation’s people. It was the Morganthau Plan, drawn up by America’s wartime Zionist Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Morganthau, and his closest advisory, Harry Dexter White (a member of a Communist espionage ring in Washington while he served as Assistant Secretary of State).

It aimed at the permanent destruction of Germany’s industrial heart and the consequent death through starvation and disease of millions and tens of millions of Germans.

The conservative newsletter, Review of World Affairs, quotes the plight of the German people after the war as follows from a confidential memorandum prepared by an eminent European economist:

“Since the end of the war about 3,000,000 people, mostly women and children and over-aged men, have been killed in eastern Germany and south-eastern Europe; about 15,000,000 people have been deported or had to flee from their homesteads and are on the road.  About 25 per cent of these people, over 3,000,000, have perished.  About 4,000,000 men and women have been deported to eastern Europe and Russia as slaves….” Quoted by Sen. Homer Capehart in speech before U.S. Senate, Feb. 5, 1946.

Dr. Lawrence Meyer, executive secretary of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, after a tour of Germany at the time stated: “About 16,000,000 German refugees east of the Oder are being deported from their homes.  It has been estimated that already 10,000,000 have been driven out.  The human tragedy and suffering caused by this ’Volkswanderung’ are unparalleled in history…”

An authentic eye-witness reported…

“A large barge is slowly being towed across the Oder River.  In it, lying on straw, are 300 children ranging from 2 to 14 years of age.  There is hardly a sign of life in the whole group.  Their hollow eyes, their swollen bellies, knees, and feet are telltale signs of starvation.  These are merely the vanguard of hundreds of thousands—millions of homeless, shattered, hungry, sick, helpless, hopeless human beings fleeing westward – west of the Oder and Neisse rivers.

“A trust in God—in his goodness and mercy—these are the only hope of Germany today.  And thank God in many there is still faith in God against which the gates of hell have stormed in vain during the past decade.” (Capehart)

hmmm, Greece was ALSO "democratic" when the entitlement-sucking proletariat REPEATEDLY voted in the politiicans who borrowed the HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of euros and paid them out to the proletariat  in HUGELY bloated government do-nothing-useful jobs, absurdly generous salaries and retirements, etc, etc.

IF the "democratic" Greeks did want the mountain of debt,

THEN they should have voted against the borrowing and the living on borrowed money.

BUT they did not - so now they MUST pay back the loans or suffer the consequences.

Greece is providing a very good lesson for all socialist parasites who want to borrow other people's money, spend it on high-living, then refuse to pay it back. Many other countries in the pipeline.

The glaring reality of the most recent election in Greece is that

IF the proletariat masses, who control election outcomes due to volume of votes, actually wanted to vote out previous regimes who were doing the reckless borrowing & spending,

THEN they could have, just as in their last election they voted out the party that was working on repaying the debt and voted in the party that wants to convert the debt to a gift.

That is a fact that is irrefutable and undeniable.

BUT the Greeks were VERY happy getting and spedning the "borrowed" money that they believed was FREE - they took action to change the government ONLY AFTER they were presented with the costs of repaying the debt.

FUCK ALL SOCIALIST THIEVING PARASITES TO HELL !!!!
