USA Is The 16th Best Place To Be Born In The World
In 1988, America was the best place to be born in the world. Based on The Economist Intelligence Unit's quality-of-life index - which links the results of subjective life-satisfaction surveys (how happy people say they are) to objective determinants of the quality of life across countries - USA was #1. Fast forward 25 years or so... and The United States now ranks 16th, just above South Korea and just below Taiwan and Belgium.

I couldn't agree with you more on the questionable methodology aspect of this study. Sweden in at number 4? Must only include newly arrived immigrants and asylum seekers who get free everything. Everbody else gets raped, literally as well as figuratively.

Yes, I have a long gun combo for Home Defense No Debt and the Mossberg 590A1 is one of the duo; after much agonizing I went with the pump 590. The A1 is the Military variant and includes a metal trigger guard as well as a stronger barrel. The other long, or really not-so-long-gun is a Tavor - and I do recommend that as well. Short, well balanced, and a joy to handle.

Forget the parties - just consider the constituencies as warring camps, because that is what they are. The democrats get more $ from the very wealthy and 1. disadvantage every child by sucking up to the education unions then 2. Enslave many of them to dependency. Most of the scenarios for social upheaval have dependency as a major driver. So the democrats basically court and are supported by one camp, populated by looters, leeches, and starry-eyed morons. The republicans appeal to a more honest type of corporate greed, and the average upright person who wants to do their job, enjoy their life and family, and have as few claims upon them as possible. Two distinct types of people, and they have predictably organized around two banners and organizations. One is effective and stalwart, the other is weak and afraid. That is the only reason why there seems to be no real difference between the parties - the organizations that speak and act for them. The GOP is ineffective, so our lives are governed by debt and dependency.
So it's a smaller problem than it seems - if the bulk of the population preferred a marginal, subsidized existence with no hope of real improvement, we'd be in trouble. As it is, we're in the process of seeing the dissolution of a system that has been broken by the government and its minions. So far we're hoping the government will fix itself, which it won't, but at some point that will be clear and real reform will be possible, driven by other actors.
In the meantime, unless you think the socialism has led to success, moral improvement, good health, a sound economy etc., forget the whole false dichotomy argument. It's a canard, meant to keep sane people from organizing behind free markets and conservatism/constitutionalism.

The methodology is flawed, to say the least. The Swedes, the Danes and the Norwegians will always answer they're happy because culturally, that's what they are supposed to say. In fact, they're most miserable - mainly the Swedes.

The only right way to go about this is to check the levels of mental conditions, depressions, suicides, drinking and drug abuse, obesity, crime rates (especially child abuse and domestic violence), divorce rates, celibacy rates, one-person households (no boy or girl friend at all), loneliness amongst elderly people, levels of non-commercial human contact (your supermarket cashier or waiter doesn't count), integration of ethnic minorities (to check the social harmony or lack thereof), existence or not of slavery (the UAE ranking 18th, WTF?), average lifespan and birth rate.
There, you would have the real health/well-being level of the countries.
I suspect the USA would come out looking bad, as well as the EU.
