Hundreds Of Ukraine Troops Surrender As Besieged Town Of Debaltseve Falls To Rebels

Tyler Durden's picture

Last week, German equities soared to record highs with the Dax surpassing 11K, not only on the imminent arrival of the ECB's Q€ which provides a risk-less bid to all asset classes, but on news that a second Ukraine ceasefire had been achieved in Minsk. Well, just like the first Minsk "ceasefire" in September, one can promptly forget the just as "successful" second one, because overnight, after a several week siege, the Ukraine town of Debaltseve finally fell to rebel forces with "troops of Ukraine’s Armed Forces laying down arms en masse,” according to Donetsk rebel official Maxim Leschenko says, cited by Tass news service.

According to Reuters government forces started pulling out of the east Ukraine town on Wednesday after a fierce assault by the rebel separatists which Europe said violated a crumbling ceasefire. President Petro Poroshenko said before flying to the town of Debaltseve that more than 80 percent of his troops in the rail hub had already left following a heavy bombardment and street-by-street fighting despite the truce that took effect on Sunday.

As previously reported, according to the pro-separatists rebels the ceasefire does not apply to Debaltseve, which links the two rebel-controlled regions of eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk.

Bloomberg adds, that "some Ukrainian troops are leaving the town as “full scale” street fighting continues following a small tank battle, Ilya Kyva, a deputy police chief of the Donetsk region, said by phone on Wednesday. Kyva wouldn’t say how many Ukrainian soldiers had left or how many still remained surrounded by the rebels. Ukrainian Eurobonds fell to a record as fighting was also reported near the coastal city of Mariupol."

And indeed, as the following map shows, the town's critical position between the key centers of Donetsk and Luhansk, made it inevitable that as east Ukraine seeks to consolidate its territory, the small city would fall.

By now the long-running spin on both sides is well-known: Poroshenko and the West say the rebel assault is being reinforced by Russian tanks, artillery and soldiers, though Moscow denies sending forces to join the battle for a region that President Vladimir Putin has called "New Russia".

"The actions by the Russia-backed separatists in Debaltseve are a clear violation of the ceasefire," European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in Brussels, stepping up Western criticism of the rebel offensive on Debaltseve. "The EU stands ready to take appropriate action in case the fighting and other negative developments in violation of the Minsk agreements continue," she said, making an apparent threat of further economic sanctions on Moscow.

A German government spokesman said the Minsk agreement had been damaged though it made sense to try to implement it.

Putin showed no sign of backing down over Ukraine on Tuesday evening, when he urged Kiev's pro-Western leaders to let their soldiers surrender to avoid more bloodshed, adding that Ukraine troops already have access to US weapons.

Hours later, the Ukrainian troop withdrawal was under way. A Reuters witness saw weary Ukrainian troops, their faces blackened, some in columns, some in cars, arriving in Artemivsk, about 30 km (20 miles) north of Debaltseve.

"The withdrawal of forces from Debaltseve is taking place in a planned and organized way," said Semen Semenchenko, who heads the Donbass paramilitary battalion. "The enemy is trying to cut the roads and prevent the exit of the troops," he said on Facebook.

News of the withdrawal hit markets, as Ukraine CDS soared while sovereign bonds crashed, pushing the entire nation even further into pre-bankruptcy and hyperinflation limbo.

So much for the ceasefire, although now that the entire industrial heavy east Ukraine region belongs to the separatists, the next step appears clear: a referendum whether or not to join Russia, a la Crimea, with an implementation shortly thereafter. This decision will be only facilitated following Bloomberg news that Kiev has decided to halt electricity supplies to the rebel region in the east.  Perhaps the only question is whether fighting continues around Mariupol which would enable Russia to have a land corridor all the way to Crimea.

Putin doesn't want any more bits of Ukraine in Russia. He wants Ukraine to go broke trying to hold the pathetic entity together, with autonomy for the eastern rebel regions. He knows the West is already broke and can't afford to bail Ukraine out.

Why does anyone still believe that Putin will EVER annex Donbas??

"...So much for the ceasefire, although now that the entire industrial heavy east Ukraine region belongs to the separatists, the next step appears clear: a referendum whether or not to join Russia, a la Crimea, with an implementation shortly thereafter..."

It doesn't matter if Donbass had a referendum every day from now to eternity and votes to join Russia and become a part of it by 110% of the vote.

Russian does not want Donbass.

Russia does not want Luhansk.

Russia does not want Donetsk.

They want neighbors that are not insane and do not let the U.S. install ABM sites next to the Russain border. Putin has said over and over again that he has no intention of annexing Donbass and he doesn't care about their referendum. Crimea was a totally different situation - Donbass IS NOT Crimea.

It is pathetic how many Americans here believe such a blatant Russian agents like you Latina Lovers. How many are not even trying to ask most basic questions. Like how the rebels has defeated Ukrainian troops with tanks and other heavy weaponry. They dont ask because they are using the famous Orwells "double thinking".

They dont ask how Poroshenko made his fortune. In a country where Russian domination was so overwhelming and where without support of corrupted pro Putin government of Yanukovitch you could have done nothing.

Simple minded readers just know. At some day the NATO has arrived at Ukraine and in some magical way everything has changed. Yes, people are the same. Oligarchs are the same. Military generals are the same. Secret services are the same. The same as two years ago. But they all changed their hearts in one night. They during all their lives made money working with Russians and for Russians. But this one night everything has changed. They formed nazi anti Russian government.

This new government has all his heavy weapons. Military backing. NATO backing. IMF backing. But rebels are so brave! With his pikes and kalashnikovs they are doing his progress. Day after day they are pushing, defeating this terrible Ukrainian army with generals trained in former USSR but with changed hearts.

Yes. The rebels have pikes and kalashnikovs only. How could they have heavy weaponry? How could they have professional troops necessary to use this advanced weaponry? They could not because they had no help of Putin. They just had to be brave. And they are. They have stopped drinking. They have started to fight. So they are. Ukrainian army is destroyed. IMF, NATO all these backing has became useless.

And yes. Here we come. Our simple minded Americans are enjoying. NATO is so stupid. They didn't know how brave are Russian rebels. NATO didn't know how it will end.

Or maybe... They just had known? They had made the deal? Maybe this Ukrainian oligarchs and generals have not changed their hearts? Maybe Poroshonko is just puppet playing for stupid Americans and the rest of the world? Maybe there has changed nothing there. Maybe this deal with Putin was set up long ago and this war is not about Russia, NATO i.e the labels for naive people.

Start to think.

PS
And you, Russian agents who will gave me minuses. You are pathetic, but on the other side it is really amazing how easy is to stick any kind of nonsenses in people heads.

You'll also notice that the captured Ukrainian regulars who are paraded around in some of those videos to bear the wrath of civilians (who heap on the invaders verbal abuse and rotten food for killing civilians, women and children) )  are not welcome in any way by the locals, who just want to be left alone, and you learn that these Ukrainians are considered foreign invaders.

It should be clear, the U.S. bought regime of Thugs in Kiev thanks to $5 billion pushed into the region for "democracy reform" post the U.S. backed Orange Revolution failure, brought this on themselves by taking a ultra-nationalist ethnic approach right out of the gate, attempting to pass laws outlawing all things Russian, with efforts to immediately push out Russian language ethnics who had lived in East Ukraine for hundreds of years.

Why the U.S. thinks is should run a proxy war on Putin's doorstep is blatantly transparent.  It is a simple tantrum for not being able to throw U.S. weight around in Syria and Iran, and about enabling Sunni Oil states south of Syria to put a pipeline through Shia run Syria, Shiites considered heretics punishable by death by many Shia.

I would also add that the Pro US Regime in Kiev was to be the springboard to launch a color revolution to take down Russia and break it into pieces, the easier for the Western Scum to rape and pillage.  Saudi Arabia is nothing compared to controlling Russia, which opens wide the gate to dominating China.   This is the big USSA play, and as usual, is already failing.

LL: here's a post on the Saker that's probably worth a read.

1. THE ROOTS AND SOURCE OF TODAY’S ECONOMIC AND GEOPOLITICAL CRISIS.

Today, the world is in a situation that can be characterized as a dead end that the liberal financial-oriented world economy drove itself into after remaining the dominant economic system following the collapse of the USSR. Not going into much more detail on that theme, since doing so would require a whole other in-depth discussion, I will simply point out that, as historical experience and logical consideration confirm, this economic system cannot work without theft. On its own, without infusions from outside, it is not able to sustain itself, therefore a long period in which no one goes to war and no one is robbed, for countries sitting at the top of the liberal “food chain”, will always mean a crisis of the economic system itself. The need for war or theft is a matter of life and death for many (if not for all) countries of the West. The danger for the West today is that “potential victims” are nowhere to be found. In the world of today, the approximate parity of strength is like it was before two world wars, which itself increases many times over the risk of a new world conflict. A classical conflict, as during the previous two world wars, or as a hybrid, hidden beneath a large number of local conflicts (the main goal of which will be not to allow the nuclear weapons deterrent to be used!) together with informational and economic aggression.

What goals are the wars’ organizers aiming for?

....

Not really new,, and the author fails to mention the usual suspects. It's as though nations naturally act against their own prosperity and best interests.

The so-called rebels were pissed because the man they voted for (and won democratically), Yanukovich, was ousted and replaced by a russophobe Oligarch and former CIA spy, Poroshenko.

The people in Lugansk and Donetsk understood from the beginning that they had to fight for their lives, knowing full well that they were regarded as sub-humans by the so-progressive West-Ukrainians. And fight they did.

I respect these people for their bravity. I never heard of any atrocity they commited but plenty of atrocities the Ukrainians comitted.

BBC Propagandist runs from incoming Ukrainian artillery, but calls it "outgoing" rebel shelling.

Apparently in the Western media, you should not believe your own eyes or reason—out is in, up is down, and left is right

In one more incredibly biased TV report from the Donetsk airport, a BBC journalist started accusing Donetsk self defense forces of breaking the ceasefire while almost getting killed by a Ukrainian "peace-loving" sticking-to-ceasefire shell.

First, Ian Pannell, international BBC corespondent, implicitly accuses rebels of a "scorched earth policy".

Putin won't accept any such referendum. He doesn't WANT the East Ukraine. He wants a unified, neutral, non-Russophobic and NATO-free Ukraine on his doorstep. Crimea was the only Ukrainian region of value that was essential to Russia and, well, we know how that turned out.

Again, he's playing pyramid chess against a group of monkeys that are more inclined to try to eat the board.

... fighting continues around Mariupol which would enable Russia to have a land corridor all the way to Crimea.

Tylers check your maps. Crimea is 300 km SW of Mariupol. E-Ukrane will have a hard time to fight for that route if not impossible. They will demand a corridor to the black see including Mariupol and Russia will connect Crimea with a bridge in the south.

Thus far he has been playing against monkeys.  There may be staging going on to change that.  If groups of NATO type mercs are captured and exposed then this is a greater victory and shows a battle against a supported force was won.  (Polish mercs do not count.)  But I do not think these forces are merc lead, they are instead expendable.  Kiev has made a mistake to throw troops out there after the previous cease fire too soon as it is too obvious they are cannon fodder..

The next inning will be more important.  Kiev will have arms, advisors, more modern heavy weapons and perhaps NATO "peacekeepers" to take control of key areas gained while the Kiev forces continue to push.  But if the EUke's control the key towns before this it is better for them.  Something is being staged, feels like it is intended to be an overpowering push.  If it does not happen WUke's potential internal problems fester.

You have no idea what a fascist is, sadly the products of our lefty education system are so thoroughly dogmatised that they cannot recoginise fascism if it whipped up a violent movement and openly supplied it with troops, all the while controlling the economy directing the people's money into state activities.

Minsk cease-fire verging on collapse as fighting continues in east Ukraine

By Niles Williamson
18 February 2015

Fighting escalated in the eastern Ukrainian city of Debaltseve on Tuesday, as the cease-fire negotiated last week in Minsk has failed to take hold.

There was street-to-street fighting in Debaltseve, as pro-Russian separatist militias moved to consolidate control over the city, where at least 5,000 Ukrainian troops are trapped. The separatists aim to reinforce their strategic position by seizing the city—a key rail hub connecting the rebel-controlled cities of Donetsk and Luhansk—from the NATO-backed Kiev regime.

Eduard Basurin, spokesman for the Donetsk People’s Republic’s (DPR) Defense Ministry, told reporters that the separatists controlled “eighty percent” of Debaltseve on Tuesday.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that a group of soldiers had been ambushed and taken prisoner by the pro-Russian separatists. While Kiev did not confirm how many were captured, separatists claimed that they had captured as many as 300 soldiers.

Congratulations to the brave Ukrainian men and boys who held off the Russian army almost a week past the signing of the Minsk II cease fire treaty. Given the cease fire was to start a couple days after the signing, Putin gave the order to take the strategic town before the start of the cease fire but they held on, the rebels telling OSCE to fuk off and stay away.  The town didn't sound surrounded on Sunday but liars seem to get away with everything.

The purpose of patriotism is not to give your life for your country but to make sure the other guy does so for his. There is no purpose to fight for a lost battle. So you die, then what? Your mother loses a son, your wife a husband and your children a father. For what? For some politician's or commander's wet dream of glory? Fuck that.

Ukraine’s parliament voted on Thursday with 260 MPs in favor - only 226 votes were needed to pass the law. The new article 22(1) added to the charter regulating service in the armed forces of Ukraine states that commanders “have the right to personally use physical force, special means, and weapons when in combat” against soldiers who commit “criminal acts.”

Under criminal acts the law lists “disobedience, resistance or threat to use force against the commander, voluntary abandonment of military positions and certain locations of military units in areas of combat missions.

Obama Abandons Hundreds Of US Special Forces In Ukraine

According to this report, the US troops currently under rebel siege are an ad hoc group of American Special Forces belonging to the Vicenza, Italy-based 173rd Airborne Brigade, CIA Special Activities Division (SAD) troops, and elite mercenaries from the notorious US private security firm Academi (formerly known as Blackwater).

MoD knowledge of these US forces participating in the Ukrainian war, this report notes, has been longstanding since last years US Army Europe-led Rapid Trident exercise in western Ukraine that comprised over 1,300 NATO troops, and Germany’s BILD newspaper reporting that their intelligence sources estimated that over 400 Academi mercenaries were involved in this conflict too.

I would expect the PMCs to have hightailed it asap. They get paid to kill, not to die. Any CIA/SF/NATO would have been ordered out too, in order to avoid political embarrassment for O'Bumbler. The only evidence would be those that died and the presence of specialist equipment that couldn't be evacuated.

A few days ago, prior to the fall of the cauldron, a short video appeared on YouTube and was taken down almost immediately. YouTube claimed it violated the terms of service. The video was only about 11 secs long, so I was puzzled why the haste for such a short video. It shows the badly burnt hand and arm of someone in uniform who died at Logovino, the place where the cauldron was closed. The camera focused on the wristwatch of the person's wrist. YouTube has shown long videos of badly injured/bleeding victims so I find it hard to accept the burnt hand would be the cause for the takedown. Is it the wristwatch that is significant?
