Russia Dumps Most US Paper Ever As China Reduces Treasurys Holdings To January 2013 Levels

Tyler Durden's picture

Back in December, Socgen spread a rumor that Russia has begun selling its gold. Subsequent IMF data showed that not only was this not correct, Russia in fact added to its gold holdings. But there was one thing it was selling: some $22 billion in US Treasurys, a record 20% of its total holdings, bringing its US paper inventory to just $86 billion in December - the lowest since June 2008.

It wasn't just Russia: the country that has ever more frequently been said to be in the same camp as Russia - and against the US - namely China, also sold another $6 billion in Treasurys in the last month of 2014, which would have made its US treasury holdings equal with those of Japan, if only Tokyo hadn't also sold over $10 billion in the same month.

And while we know that Russia used at least some of the proceeds to buy gold, the bigger question is: just what is China buying with all these stealthy USD-denominated liquidations, and how much gold does the PBOC really have as of this moment.

The Achilles heel of the western bankster regime is the dollar hegemony backed by NATO.  Remove it and watch the entire MIC house of cards fall.   This will take time, but Russia and China 'get' it, and will continue to sell dollar holdings and deal direct. This is also why Putin is in the cross hairs of the USSA.

Meh.

All remaining US debt will be promptly purchased by the Federal Reserve; eventually they will own it all.

When you owe a debt in your own currency (Note: I didn't say "money") you can monetize  'till kingdon come.

So, what's the big deal?

It's no big deal until a dollar crisis emerges.

A central bank that only has the debt of the own government on it's balance sheet (USrael has only 120 bn$ foreign reserves) has the following problem, when a currency crisis emerges:

It has no foreign FX to sell to collect the weakening national currency on the market. So it only can raise interest rates. But a currency crisis most often comes among a weakening economy. Raising rates kills the economy further, the government deficit rises, the currency crisis deepens.

That's the huge difference to - for example - the Swiss National Bank's money printing:

It printed it's currency to flood the market and to buy foreign FX, gold, equities with it. In a weakening phase of the Franc, it simply could sell these assets denominated in other currencies and buy Francs on the market.

The difference between printing money to pump up a bancrupt financial sector, or to finance bancrupt states (BoJ, ECB) and printing money to weaken the own strong currency.

Nobody understands that. Until a currency crisis emerges.

They also seem to be keyword triggered, we've always had a few based off of keywords a certain middle eastern country created in the 1950s would care about, but I've noticed lately negative china-related keywords bring them out in droves, and the other day they went completely nuts when the Franklin scandal was brought up.

Yeah, China, being a manufacturing giant, is slowly trading off their holdings of TPs, dollars, for friends and hard assets. Russia, being mostly extractive (oil & gas), is quickly trying to get into hard assets. China is probably orchestrating the whole thing so as not to get the TPs too wet, too soon.

Sort of fun to watch, and heartbreaking as well in watching Zion's desperate rape and murder of the rest of the world in an attempt to keep their ponzi going that much longer. The false-flags have certainly been amusing.

I disagree.. If I put myself in their shoes, it would seem that the current pace, is quite comfortable, indeed...

This is a long drawn out game & until Putin gets policy coordination to spur domestic economic development, he needs USD denomited assets.. Besides, with EU sanctions in place , on top of a structurally weak EU econ, deflationary pressures are likely to persist.. Thus, there is no rush to exit Treasury paper, as the deflationary bid , should remain equally persistant..

Maybe, but some time ago the US was the biggest holder of gold, and in theory still is. They would have had to have loaned out a shitload to not still be the biggest holder of bullion. If they did, and the bullion is gone, when did it get shipped out? Seriously. I have heard many stories, some credible, that the US doesn't actually have as much gold as they say. Can anybody produce a reasonable estimate based on evidence for how much of their stated gold they DON'T have?

If they even have half of what they say, they still have the most in the world.

No, actually the Eurozone central banks own more gold than the official US amount.

And Russia has been buying aggressively and no one knows how much China has, but it's a lot.

If they even have half of what they say, they still have the most in the world.

But even if the US had the most 'official' gold (which only accounts for 17% - the rest is held privately) - so what? If we return to using gold as money, the US are (nett) an importer. i.e - the gold would flow out from the US to its trading partners. Why do you think the US ended convertibility back in 1971?

What cocerns me about the gold standard is the unknown amount of Au that's been accumulated by the 0.01% for a couple of centuries, awaiting a return to the standard. The amounts of gold held by nations is at least publically stated, whether or not it's true is debatable.

There is a likelyhood that there's a huge amount held by private concerns ready to play with gold evaluations in the same way that the Fed is playing with the $ .

FOFOA has dealt with this in the past, sorry I cant provide any links as I dont follow all that closely.

I dont have any specific remedies. I only hope that there will emerge from today's events a cadre of leaders that place their nation's best iterests ahead of international money concerns, much as Russia's and China's leaders are doing. At this time these two nations are acting as the seed crystals for global trade relationships seperate from the IMF/Fed/WB usery systems.

Something that comes to mind for me is that the 0.01% need and are heavily invsted in the fiat system. They absolutely do not want currency to be value based. Fiat is the greatest power-jack move ever performed against a people. They already won. They have value, we have debt.

This is not to say no 0.01% types are gold-hoarding. But they are dreading a return to value-based money, and they'll put a great deal on the line to ensure this regime stays in place.

The 'why' was the fact that the twin welfare/warfare states required more money than could be taxed or borrowed. The trade imbalance was mostly due to oil.
Had we been spending the gold, importing the oil, and converting that energy into salable productivity, there would have been no problems. Instead it got squandered by our masters.

@ Winston Churchill - I believe your question is rhetorical and you know the answer as well as I do.  No, they will not wait until the NinC is out of office.  Shit's gonna blow up between now and January 2017, they will make certain of that.  They can't affort to wait, they must take advantage of the bozo that is in office now. There's no guarantee the next one will be as stupid, weak, and incompetent, although if they are banking on Hilarity Clinton being elected, perhaps they can be patient, as I'm not sure she wouldn't be even worse than the NinC.

The only time I EVER hear "nigger" in real life is either in rap songs (sung by blacks) or blacks saying to each other.

Whites are deathly afraid of uttering that word in front of other whites, who will mercilessly shame them, shun them, and do the ultimate punishment, call them a racist like you have.

You know what? FUCK YOU. NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER.  You call me whatever the fuck you want.  Doesn't matter. I know the truth. I lived it for 18 years.

If you ever lived amongst urban blacks you would know the truth.  They hate whites just for being white.

They will kill you as soon as look at you. Try asking one to act in a civil manner (such as please stop cussing in front of these children) and watch the violent shit show begin.

Like Richard Pryor *(a black man FYI) once sung on an obscure comedy album from the '70's"  NIGGERs. Are Niggers. Are Niggers."

Now fuck off you liberal PC piece of shit.  You want to live with your black brothers because they're just like you? OK.  Try New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Baltimore, Clevland,  Columbus, Oakland, Detroit, Atlanta, or any other fine urban living zone to see what real racism looks like somewhere where whites are not the majority.

Real racism will kick you in the head for fun and rape your wife. Real racism exists amongst non-white groups, who are free to act out on their impulses and attack whites, because they are protected by the government and ignorant liberal whites who insist that only whites are racist (aka fake racism). Real racism is when groups of one tribe single out members of another tribe and brutalize them just because they are a member of the wrong tribe.

In america this gets played out daily -- it's called black on white crime. Look up the  number of black on white rapes vs white on black rapes.  The numbers? About 30k black on white per year, about 0 white on black.

Square that with your precious bullshit ideology.  Only an ignorant person or a paid shill would assert such a bullshit theorem on this site of all places.

You my friend are either a useful idiot, or a paid shill.

Your liberal fantasy of equality has nothing to do with reality and natural law.

problem with pm in shtf is not the value of the materia, it is when you have to exchange for a daily uptake like bred, if you give 1oz at once, not menting value you credit to gold at this specific moment,  how many bred you can buy ? will your bred vendor will produce daily for xxx days because he owes you the xxx bred for an oz ? is gold eatable ?

pm is to me ok for a safe phyz  in transitionnal system, in a collapse situation when nothing worth anything and anything worth nothing, the value of the daily needs, the reel value is the daily consommable.

resepct to PM stackers, but, mathematicly, if you trade pm for daily goods, goods must come from somewhere, if money not worth anything, how the system can keep  producing those goods... a stock shortage must comes into play soon or later, and that means, to me, more problems.

just my 2ct.

"China, also sold another $6 billion in Treasurys in the last month of 2014, which would have made its US treasury holdings equal with those of Japan, if only Tokyo hadn't also sold over $10 billion in the same month."

So are they going to assert that Japan is throwing in with China and Russia?  After all, it appears they sold even more T-bills, doesn't it?

Of course not.

The Chinese and Russians are not fools.  Even if they are, in fact, selling Treasuries for the purpose of attacking the dollar at some point, they are not going to telegraph that fact, and give themselves massive losses on the deal.

It won't cost the stackers as much for insurance with gold below $1,200.

Most likely all of these countries are selling the UST to book gains in bond price while also buying the local currency that is painfully declining.  I have been convinced that BOJ was selling UST to fund their own JGB purhases and Yen support program, rather than print more Yen.

The Increase in yield on UST 10y has been greater than total yield on German or Japanese 10y.  Someone had to be selling in SIZE.
