Ukraine Fighting Shifts To Mariupol Whose Capture Would Grant Russian Land Corridor To Crimea
Yesterday, when we reported that the last Ukraine outpost in the rebel-controlled eastern territory, the town of Debaltseve, has fallen into separatist hands, we concluded that "perhaps the only question is whether fighting continues around Mariupol which would enable Russia to have a land corridor all the way to Crimea."
Moments ago we got the answer when Reuters reported that "pro-Russian separatists have launched mortar attacks on government-held positions near the coastal town of Mariupol in southeast Ukraine and are building up their forces there, local military reached by telephone said on Thursday."
"Right now there are mortar attacks on Shyrokine," a local military spokesman said referring to a village about 30 km (19 miles) east of Mariupol, along the coast of the Sea of Azov.
"There is no attempt to seize our positions up to now. The rebels are bringing up reserves," the spokesman said.
Well, since the Minsk ceasefire is officially over before it even started, one can be sure that an attempt will be made. The reason: as the updated map below showing who controls what territory in east Ukraine currently - with Debaltseve firmly in separatist hands - Mariupol is the last remaining outpost before "Novorossiya" will have a land access to Crimea.
As for what happens after Mariupol, too, falls? Well, the broke Ukraine government is just making it too easy. As Reuters also reports, "Ukraine has suspended supplies of gas to its eastern regions because the gas network was damaged by fighting between pro-Russian separatists and government forces, Ukrainian state gas firm Naftogaz said on Thursday. "Due to the extensive damage of the gas transport networks, the supply of gas ... was suspended on Feb. 18. The resumption of gas supplies is not yet possible because of the ongoing hostilities in the region," the company said in a statement."
In other words, with Kiev fully cutting off east Ukraine from its control, it will be up to Putin to swoop in and "save" the territory from its host government which no longer cares about the fate of the people living there.

I don't expect the NAF to take Mariupol as it appears that Russia does want the Minsk 2 deal to take effect, which would preclude this.
This entire debacle, both the East and West versions of it are about controlling the flow of energy to Europe.
All the viable routes from energy sources of sufficient size to Europe pass through the Black Sea basin.
With a massive military presence in Crimea, Russia can control the Black Sea Basin trade through military force.
However, military bases in Crimea cannot function without massive amounts of supply.
Without secure land supply routes to Crimea, Russian military bases could be cut off from supplies, and would be no use.
Don't kid yourself. This story is not about Good Guys and Bad Guys. It is about thieves, murderers and meddlers on every side.

If Mariupol falls, US lethal aid will likely happen. Russia has said to expect a "dramatic result" should that occurr. I think this will eventually end badly with T-90's and M1's facing off.

“Stock of natural gas in the DPR and LPR will last until the evening. We face the need to carry out a package of measures aimed at changing the gas flow. It is possible. The measures have been developed,” – Vadim Tupoi said.

The rail half uses an ugly-assed 1950's iron boxed girder design - very 1950's.
They should have used plain prestressed concrete box girders for both the rail and automobile sides, or went with the much better-looking steel-cable suspension design. Buddy...most of the people who live in Crimea want nothing to do with Kiev. Most of the people in Crimea speak Russian and are alligned with Russian values. There are paramilitary groups running around Kiev who think Stepan Bandera was a hero. Most people in Crimea consider him a criminal. Kiev wants to erect monuments to the organizations alligned with Bandera...and celebrate holidays associated with organazations supporting his ideology. Crimea lost a lot of people to Nazis while it was a part of Russia...and Crimeans fought side by side with Russians. When you sit in a hole with a guy for a few years...it really creates a bond. Taking Mariupol is a major project. It could go quickly if the Ukraine Armed Forces (UAF) panics and runs (they started to last time), or if an uprising of the population (who voted 90% in favor of joining the Donetsk Peopes Repubic (DPR) and waged serious street battles to try to keep the UAF out) can be organized. A rebel attack would be a political as well as a military decision. The political fallout would be huge - and would heavily impact Russia.
A march from Mariupol to Crimea would first involve a decision to advance outside Donetsk Provence (Mariupol is inside it) into Ukraine territory the DPR does not claim - again a political decision. A quick check with Google Map shows it would involve taking two more cities (population about 120,000 and 150,000) and advancing a distance of 200 miles. All possible provided the UAF is not able to attack the unguarded flank of the advancing column. In other words, possible if the UAF collapses. Which could happen judging from the debacle at Debaltsalvo, but it hasn't happened yet.
