US Government Proposes "Sugary-Food Tax" To Curb Obesity

Tyler Durden's picture

The totalitarian arm of the ever-growing government appears to know no limit. In today's "oh no they didn't" moment, the US Government's diet panel has dictated proposed one more oppression of American's freedom to choose:

  • *GOV'T PANEL PROPOSES SUGARY-FOOD TAX TO FUND NUTRITION PROGRAMS, CURB OBESITY

On the bright side, the government approves of "lean meat" as compatible with healthy eating. The bill, introduced by Rep. Juan Candelaria, D-New Haven, would impose a tax of 1 cent per ounce on soft drinks - including sweetened teas, energy drinks and soda - and candies that are high in sugar and calories.

As Bloomberg reports,

Americans should pay taxes on sugary sodas and snacks as a way to cut down on sweets, though they no longer need to worry about cholesterol, according to scientists helping to revamp dietary guidelines as U.S. obesity levels surge.

The recommendations Thursday from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee also call for Americans to reduce meat consumption and to take sustainability into account when dining.

The panel released its report as the Obama administration seeks ways to fight obesity, which now affects more than one-third of American adults and 17 percent of children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“What we’re calling for in the report in terms of innovation and bold new action in health care, in public health, at the community level, is what it’s going to take to try and make a dent on the epidemic of obesity,” committee chairwoman Barbara Millen of Millennium Prevention in Westwood, Massachusetts, said in a telephone interview.

Suggestions by the nonpartisan panel of academics and scientists helps shape school lunch menus and the $6 billion a year Women, Infants and Children program, which serves more than 8 million Americans buying groceries from retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kroger Co. The recommendations were sent to the two agencies that later this year will issue the final guidelines that are used to create the government’s icon for healthy diets, currently a dinner-plate that replaced the widely used food pyramid.

Government knows best:

“Higher sugar-sweetened beverage taxes may encourage consumers to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption,” according to the advisory panel. “Using the revenues from the higher sugar-sweetened beverage taxes for nutrition health promotion efforts or to subsidize fruits and vegetables could have public health benefits.”

The document states that “lean meats can be a part of a healthy dietary pattern.”

“The food industry is frantic about the guidelines. They don’t want anything in there that says anything about eating less of their products. That’s their concern more than anything else.”

*  *  *

So, expensive non-refined foods are good? And the poorist people - who can't afford to eat the way the government dictates - will pay all the taxes?

Hopefully you're aware that Whole Foods, local organic co-ops, and even some farmer's markets are currently accepting EBT customers.

If you can "afford" one inch thick $25 per pound organic, grass-fed porterhouse steaks on your government assistance, well then, you're fucking golden!

White flour can be more glycemic than pure sugar (example, french bread).  High fructose corn syrup is much worse than sugar.  And artificial sweeteners are much more effective than pure sugar in causing obesity and diabetes. If you tax sugary-food, you will have to tax lots of foods that have similar or worse effects than sugar

In any case, you can eliminate your diabetes and obesity risk very easily:

What you said...............alll I know is .. some of it is genetic.. some of it is KIND and type of food .. and some from lifestyle . mostly sedentary .. food produced in the US is crap .. crap .. crap ... especially processed food and most meat that is not organic .. is full of CRAP ... people in France . .or in Vietnam where I travel .. do not eat American food .. they . in FRance eat lots of cheese, bread, sauce and FAT till hell wont have it .. and the women are still trim .. in Vietnam .. most food is non Gmo LOCAL  grown .. they eat a lot of fish .. very little red meat .. there is more to the US problem then eating too much . although that is likely part of it. In Nam .. eating is THE big event of the day .. TET which is on now .. they eat for FIVE days .. but mostly fish . soup .. and rice and vegetables. . plus drink a massive amount of beer .. all good .. all good.

Treatment of  chronic disease is where and when the members of the AMA, the Heart Association, the Diabetes Association and Big Pharma make their big bucks.    You can't patent the recommendation "throw out your vegetable oils, except for olive, avocado and coconut oils, and don't eat any grains at all, or minimal grains and infrequently, and eschew sugars and sweeteners, but eat animal fats and protein as you like"

As we absolutely know in todays world:

1. The "government" and our "leaders" assume they OWN US lock, stock and barrel.

2. We have no "true" rights left as they can be ignored or just changed on a whim or as needed.

3. Anything you think you own or whatever property you think you own can be taken for virtually any reason if the powers that be want it.  You think you own your house?  Don't pay the property taxes for a year or so and see who really "owns" it.

4. We are merely debt and tax slaves to feed the wreckless military, industrial, "intelligence" complex led by insane asshats!!

How we make it another 10 years is beyond me.  I don't see it happening...

That is all for now.

It should be law that every citizen is issued 1 plastic government fork (one of those small ones that come with free samples). You get one fork per tax filing. If you are caught using any other utensil other than your serialized government issued fork (tracked by a national utensil database) you go to jail. Obesity problem solved with big government tactics.

Forks and sugar cause obesity and the government can fix it.

Now we can get back to more important issues like how Obama is going to find jobs for ISIS so they stop hating us (because the bin laden family and ayman al zahwiri weren't incredibly rich)

That kid is going to have health issues. That kid is going to have self-respect and body image issues. And their fat stupid fuck parents just keep providing them the same fat stupid fuck "food," either oblivious or indifferent to the damage they're doing to their own children.

Obviously this topic is sensitive to most... But take a step back and think about what CzarAng is saying. Aside from being harsh, he couldn't be more correct.

Look @ the most common Role models/senior executives/entrepreneurs. How many are "obese"? Maybe 0.1%

if you are Obese or "not-pleasant" to look at, your success rate is crippled. Today's society is based on snap judgments; there is no debating this, every day we consciously or sub consciously do this. Sub-Consciously, we associate lazy & lack of drive with obese people.

So yes, Czar is unfortunately Absolutely Correct in saying above. It is a parents duty to understand this concept and take appropriate measures to ensure their kids are 'properly' fed. Just the same as working day to day to ensure kids will go to college or have a better life.

I'm not walking into your house and doing anything; I'm expressing my opinion on a public forum, same as you.

I do think that once you admit you can't do anything you want to your kid - you can't leave them chained in a basement with only bread and water and no human contact for 18 years - then it becomes a valid of question of what constitutes genuine child abuse. Does feeding them fat fuck food until they beocme a fat fuck count? I'm not entirely sure.

Some of my friends and I were discussing the "traditional family" the other day, and one of my friends said something really insightful. She said that a family consisting of a mother, a father, and N amount of children isn't anything remotely like a traditional family. A traditional family includes aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents all living in relative proximity to one another, and I can't help but think that might be a moderating influence on some of the worst behaviors we see on display today. If mommy and daddy won't discipline their children properly, maybe grandma or Auntie Susan will. But we've all been brainwashed into believing that you've got a nuclear family on one end and the State on the other.

An even bigger problem is restrictions on our personal freedom and the right to make our own choices.  I'm very sure there are many things that you do that could be considered a potential threat to your own health or that of your family members.  Are you really sure that you want government and society constantly looking over your shoulder and telling you what you can or can't do every time you, say, skip breakfast or walk down a flight of stairs without holding the handrail?

I rely on population studies, on the treatment results achieved by Drs. Pritikiin, MacDougal, Esselstyn and others, and on contemporary research.  Dr. Greger has a staff at nutritonfacts.org that reviews about 10,000 nutrition articles per year, integrates it posts summaries every day.  It's clear from the population based dietary studies, the lifestyle treatment results and the ongoing research just what constitutes the healthiest diet and lifestyle.

Weston Price was a dentist whose work, at a quick glance,  seems anecdotal ie. based on his personal experience rather than scientific controlled population studies.  Colin Campbell (author of The China Study and Whole is a world class nutritionist both in lab work and populations studies).   That said, Weston's observations on processed food are completely consistent with what i've learned.  Also i'm not a purist, about 95% whole food, plant based for the last two years.  When I do eat fish, it's wild caught, if possible.   If I were going to eat meat it would be as close to natural (and as far from factory farmed) as possible.

Here's someone having a crack at Price:

" Much of "holistic dentistry" is rooted in the activities of Weston A. Price, D.D.S. (1870-1948), a dentist who maintained that sugar causes not only tooth decay but physical, mental, moral, and social decay as well. Price made a whirlwind tour of primitive areas, examined the natives superficially, and jumped to simplistic conclusions. While extolling their health, he ignored their short life expectancy and high rates of infant mortality, endemic diseases, and malnutrition. While praising their diets for not producing cavities, he ignored the fact that malnourished people don't usually get many cavities.

Price knew that when primitive people were exposed to "modern" civilization they developed dental trouble and higher rates of various diseases, but he failed to realize why. Most were used to "feast or famine" eating. When large amounts of sweets were suddenly made available, they overindulged. Ignorant of the value of balancing their diets, they also ingested too much fatty and salty food. Their problems were not caused by eating "civilized" food but by abusing it. In addition to dietary excesses, the increased disease rates were due to: (a) exposure to unfamiliar germs, to which they were not resistant; (b) the drastic change in their way of life as they gave up strenuous physical activities such as hunting; and (c) alcohol abuse."  http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/holisticdent.html

I'm saying the critic is right or wrong or holding up Quackwatch as a reliable source - just using it to illustrate that not having a scientific population study which controls for other variables leaves you unable to defend your conclusions.

More theft under cover of undoing the effects of previous, and on going, thefts.

DC US taxes and controls sugar imports on behalf of sugar interests. Then DC US subsidized corn interests pay DC US to allow mercury laced High Fructose Corn Syrup to be used as sugar substitute.

As a result, obesity skyrockets, but is blamed on the sheeple, and now the so-called "answer" is to steal more, and impoverish the sheeple further.

A scam becomes a scam's scam.

Facilitating an addiction then charging a premium. Government's a fucking back alley drug dealer.

The only reason they're against drugs like marijuana is because unlike booze and tobacco, sugar and caffeine, anyone can grow their own quantities, if allowed, and once hooked, they likely will have no appetite for all those other government drugs...

... and taxing Cheetos will never make up for lost revenue.

Horrible idea, 1 cent per ounce is a massive increase.  A 44 oz soda is what, 79c to $1.49 depending on where you go.  That would make it, $1.23-$1.93.  That's a pretty big increase for people who can't afford to.  But how would they tax those fountain drinks, since we all know 44oz (or whatever size) is not 44oz unless you have no ice.  It would also add $1.44 per 12 pack.  That's a big increase since when on sale you can get them for $2.50-3.33.  So basically it would be about a 50 percent tax increase on soda.  But not just that, but also Gatorade/Powerade, even though they have substantially less sugar/HFCS in it.  A 32 oz Powerade has about the same sugar as a 12oz coke.  Also don't most energy drinks not contain sugar/HFCS?

Of course this sort of tax can spread to all things...next up, a beef tax due to health and 'carbon/methane'.

This is not a good trend.

Neither is drinking soda or anything with Sugar or high fructose corn syrup.  But then again, people ARE heeding the message.  Last I checked soda consumption is massively down the last few years or so.

Then remember after paying all these taxes, Obamacare's fascist statistical theory death panels will deny care.  Similar to all those tobacco taxes that were 'created' to fund smoker's health costs, but were raided for other purposes.

They'll put a $10,000  pump meter like at the gas pumps tied into the iThingy register. (Cash Register is sooo 20th century). 1 oz... ding, 2 oz... ding,,, ding,,,ding to 44 oz.  :))

That'll be `$1.00 for the drink plus $.17  for state, local and whatever tax plus $.44 fat tax. Total = $1.61...Oh I'm sorry, we don't use pennies these days, too expensive to make ya know... The grand total is $1.65.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

This will do nothing - they want a solution that does not harm big business in any way - there is no regulation that they can tag on that would decrease sales - otherwise there is hell to pay and the campaign contributions and union votes stop.

Of couse this will "exempt" all of the proccessed food that contains sugar or a hidden form of sugar - almost all of it.  Can't have the big agra "angry" that their food is outlawed or increased in price.

It will also be  avoided on sugar foods that are indirect: aka carb heavy foods - again. can't possibly have a solution that would decrease sales.

Where it impacts low income, they will simply increase the EBT card by the tax so they are not burdened.  Of course this will not be direct - it will come under  some other guise to help them.

And... there is almost no chance that money actually goes for education - its just another bullshit tax to get more money for the govt when they run out of other methods to do so.

I would argue that its the modified forms of sugar which create most of the problems - HFCS and other.

Why not start with banning the use of anything but regular sugar - white, unrefined or honey etc?  See what happens?  Or instead of banning corn sugars, why not STOP the bullshit subsidies to corn farmers?  Why not tax the producers of HFCS so that its more expensive than regular sugar >  If its so good and essential to the taste of the product, the producer will simply pay it and raise the price.  My guess is this is not true at all.

How our Congress Critters will Vote:

This one is for the kids, so it has to be good.  You would be unAmerican to not want to be for the kids....

The thyroid gland, under bombardment from nuclear radiation fallout, will cause humans to gain weight uncontrollably.

The Hanford Downwinders ingested fallout and many suffer from this very effect. It has been fully demonstrated that ingestion of radioactive particles will constantly bombard adjacent tissue. When the thyroid is involved, e.g. via uptake of radioactive Iodine, etc.

Case in point? The huge releases  from Hanford from the 1940s and ongoing to the present. These were mostly kept secret.

Someone explain to me how this group of geniuses expect to "gain revenue from tax hikes on suguary beverages to fund nutrional programs" but in the same breath state that the tax on suguary beverages is meant to discourage the consumption of these products.   Thus if the program is successful and the purchase and consumption of said taxed items are curtailed, how is there a presumed tax revenue gain?   If the program is successful there should be no revenue benefit from the tax hike.  What sort of logic is this?  I'm dying here but I'm not so far gone as to recognize stupidity or intellectually dishones behavior.
