Dutch To Greeks: "Suck It Up Or Return To The Drachma"

Tyler Durden's picture

The front page of Holland's De Telegraph newspaper has a simple message for The Greeks:

Roughly translated - "Swallow or Return To The Drachma"

*  *  *

It would appear no matter what the outcome of today's meeting, resentment and bitterness across the union will only increase.

*  *  *

However, Eurogroup Chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem just uttered some "optimistic" tones...

“It’s quite complicated, I’m talking to the main players trying to find solutions. It will cost some time but there’s still reason for some optimism, but it’s very difficult.”

and EURUSD shot up in hopeful exuberance...

Confusion reigns.

And maybe because governments get suckered into the Euro by their own greed. It is an opportunity to borrow vast sums with no intention of paying most of it back, and then dole out the proceeds to cronies and family members. After that great work is done, you withdraw and default.

From what I understand (from an article on this site I beleive), there is a printing press within the soverign boundary of Greece.  They are currently authorized to print EU notes.  As far as i know, the bureaucrats in Brussles do not have a repo squad.  So, regardless of the outcome, what is to prevent Greece from printing EU notes?  The honor system?

Dude, I dont know how they print.  My question is, what is to prevent greece from counterfitting.  If a "Y" is the only difference in notes.  I cant imagine there is a high technical hurdle to print without a Y.  Just ask the greek mafia down the street to run the facility.

Some deceits are more serious than others. Abusing the right to print would be an act of war I should think.

The Dutch can get used to a Northern P,X Euro and wa and see how their tulips tch the Club Med Euro go south with France straddling the line. It will allow the Dutch to peg themselves to the Danish Krona and see how their horticultural products sell.........at present tomatoes cost more in Greece than in NL.

There is no point in continuing with this farce and throttling Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece who are simply not able to compete without using illegal labour from North Africa and not paying taxes........Germany pays a lot of subsidies to keep their wine sector afloat and soft loans are abundant from public-sector banks.

It is time East Germany which has Greek productivity had Greek living standards instead of huge municipal transfers from West German towns and cities. Three states in Germany support the rest through transfer payments

Joe A's picture

I am Dutch and I don't consider us laid back. We're not as uptight as the Germans though. In NL you need to comply with the unwritten rule of 'gezelligheid'. Be like the rest. Don't do anything out of the ordinary unless that becomes mainstream. Then you need to comply with that. Oh, and don't question the royal family. 80% of the population supports that. If you question that then people get really edgy. It is easy to corner people in discussions about why it is rather foolish and infantile to have a 'royal family' but that is too confrontational for most people.

There's an idea...use some of that Aegean beachfront to lure entrepreneurs to Greece. One year free rent and plenty of tax breaks and other perks, but you have to establish a functioning business that returns a profit to Greece and its people as well, with jobs and increased business activity...Then they can choose to stay on, or take their profits and leave, leaving the business behind for Greece.

With fewer and fewer places for investors to go and more onerous restrictions on small businesses in developed nations, it might prove very attractive to an up-and-coming concern willing to take on some risk.

Greece could be a kind of 'nursery' for small businesses, letting them grow away from the big global concerns that stamp them out everywhere else.

Forget banknotes...silver Drachmas...A one year 'quarantine' to keep them in-country and everything else out. Don't let the new drachmas leave the country...shouldn't be that hard, silver can't be moved electronically, and has weight to it in any significant amounts.
After a time, start minting and selling those silver drachmas to anyone who may want them. (I've a feeling they'd be very, very popular, and sell at a considerable premium.) Keep 'em at Maple Leaf purity, and slap an excellent design on them, and they wouldn't be able to keep up with demand.
It could be profitable for them. Then they can use some profits to 'buy' crappy Euro fiat and use THAT to pay their international creditors...they might get a fairly decent exchange rate if silver goes up, which it probably would if they went to a silver drachma.
If they had a few guys who know how to play the currency markets, they might even make a Soros-style killing with the right bets at the right time...

THAT would be a delicious irony...trash the currency you owe the debt in, then use better currency to buy the devalued shit, and use THAT to pay 'em back.

Hello drachma, nice to see you

It's been a long time
You're just as lovely as you used to be
How's your new debt
Are you happy?

Hope you're doing fine
Just to know it means so much to me
What's that drachma? How am I doing?
Guess I'm doing all right
Except I can't sleep and I cry all night till dawn

What I'm trying to say is I love you and I miss you
And I'm so sorry that I did you wrong

Look up drachma
Let me spend you just for old time sake
Let me hold you in my hands one more time
Thank you drachma
May God bless you and may each trade you take
Bring you closer to the things you seek to find

Goodbye Euro, gotta go now
Gotta try to find a way to lose these mem'ries
Of a debt so warm and true
And if you should ever find it in your heart to forgive me
Come back Euro, I'll be waiting for you

Why did Greece join the Euro again?

Let's see, if gas and oil prices jump, Drachma would weaken purchasing power.

Weak Drachma is supposed to result in higher exports.

But what do the Greeks export?  Turkey exports a lot of stuff, what does Greece have?   Offshore funds? Nobody in the Euro really has access to the offshore oil in Cyprus.

Greece does have medicine.  What have they done to prop that sector up?

The riots?  protest - may turn off tourists.

Greeks are painting themselves into a corner.
