Europe "Isolates" Putin? Considers "Reframing" Energy Relations With Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears President Obama's "costs" imposed on Russia have boomerang'd just too much for Europe to take. As Reuters reports, The EU is seeking to create a single energy market, based on cross-border connections to improve security of supply and reduce dependence on Russia, which supplies roughly one third of EU energy. The headline pivot away from Putin, likely misses the fact that there is very little a stagnating Europe can do, even in the medium term, to 'reduce' dependence on Washington's nemesis.

As Reuters reports,

The European Union will consider "reframing" energy relations based on market conditions with Russia when the time is right and for now is focusing on building a strategic gas partnership with Ukraine, a draft document shows.

The European Commission, the EU executive, is seeking to create a single energy market, based on cross-border connections to improve security of supply and reduce dependence on Russia, which supplies roughly one third of EU energy.

Next week, the Commission is expected to publish formally its strategy on an energy union.

"When the conditions are right, the EU will consider reframing the energy relationship with Russia based on a level playing field in terms of market opening, fair competition, environmental protection and safety, for the mutual benefit of both sides," a draft of the Energy Union Package seen by Reuters says.

For now, it says particular attention will be paid to upgrading "the strategic partnership on energy" with Ukraine.

It says it will address Ukraine's importance as a transit country, as well as improving infrastructure and Ukraine's energy efficiency to reduce its dependence on imports.

Russia's long-standing gas relations with the EU and Ukraine, the main transit route for Russian gas to the EU, have deteriorated since Russia's seizure of Ukraine's Crimea region last year.

*  *  *

Good luck with that 'strategy' change...

I guess the EU had best join Obama in arming ISIS so the Saudi-Qatari pipeline can get built through what's left of Iraq and Syria and on to the EU.

Goddammit, we'll ship Europe our excess oil and that'll keep 'em warm in the winter, keep our American workers worked and increase our exports while stopping Putin in his tracks.  God Bless America.
And if that don't work, we'll buy that picture of Albert Camus eating his roasted penis on a stick they have in that Louvers place and they'll have plenty of cash top pay him which they can't do because we cut 'em off from the banks.  And we'll just confiscate everybody's bonds so we don't have to pay.  And nationalize all their gold they have in Fort Knox and them other places.  And not sell 'em any excess butter or rice.  We'll make 'em all drive Volts and register their firearms and be nice to all the Europeans and give them Obamacare.  And teach those rag-heads a thing or two while we're at it.  I mean, those Godless fuckers, we oughta team up with ISIS and have them invade Moscow for us.  Teach 'em a thing or two, it would.  And then when they win Russia we'll have them all have jobs because of us and everybody'll be happy as frogs in cold water on a sunny day.  Shit's smarter than a ugly dog on a short leash in July.

Who thinks up this shit?

More-fucking-over, reread the first sentence.  Do it twice.  Please

"The European Union will consider "reframing" energy relations based on market conditions with Russia when the time is right and for now is focusing on building a strategic gas partnership with Ukraine"

Based on, when the time is right, will consider and but for now are the operative terms, meaning nothing'll be done in our lifetime.

I've heard a few people here on ZH mention the Jewish Participation in the Opium Wars - which would imply their factions' (of course, not all Jewish Persons are Drug Peddlers - I've also read about plenty of USAmerican Houses making their mint on the Trafficking) influence in HKG and elsewhere in CHN.

Tie the factions to the Freemasons/HSBC(Tied into the Five-Eyed Hegemony), and a few Western Bankers / Businesses / VC Firms (laundered Money at work) then you should have a clearer picture.

I was listening to a Jim Willi radio broadcast a couple of weeks ago from back in  Jan 2014 . Willi absolutely nailed the Saudi oil price war well before it ever surfaced. Willi talked about the verbal exchange between Putin and the Saudi Prince Bandar He was absolutely spot on when he said that Putin would drive a wedge between the Saudi's and the US ,Now that everything has unfolded, his prediction was right, the US have now turned on the Saudi's and have started linking them to 911. The Saudi's have priced the US oil producers out of the market. All the NEW military hardware was Chinese at the latest military display by the Saudi's and the biggest beneficiaries from the Saudi oil sale was the BRICS countries mainly China that purchased most of the cheap oil . http://youtu.be/jbhxPRamhHQ .17mins 30secs into the broadcast

Why should he?

Russia has been the most reliable energy supplier.

Not even the collapse of the Soviet empire, or the collapse of their currency and the bancruptcy of Russia did affect it. Not once in six decades Russia did not fullfill it's contract.

The problems have begun, once Soros and Ziofriends started the first color revolution in Ukraine. From that time on, this transit country was stealing gas and blackmailing Russia.

Securing energy supply means to get rid of the Ziopuppets in Ukraine or build pipelines so Ukraine is no longer needed.

Or perhaps to China. Russia plans to have a chinese gas piple ready by 2019. Russia is probably done with Europe (or will be when the chinese pipeline is completed).

Europe will likely have to resort to US coal imports, if the US and/or the EU isn't a complete basket case by then. Odds don't look good for the EU lasting another 4 or 5 years (with a Greek Exit sometime this year). The US Gov't debt will likely top $24 Trillion.

One can understand the logic of Kremln analysts. Ukraine is to collapse in bankruptsy with no way to pay for gas by itself, so sooner or later, likely in 2015, it will start stealing the gas from EU flow. The pipes are not maintained properly since they were bult 30 or so years ago. Noone is ready to invest to maintain it without confirmation that Russia would be still using it in future. So, due to blocking by EU South Stream - did they really plan to blackmail Putin ?! - Russia found the way only slighly different but to the territory of Turkey. EU idiots still cannot beleive it and instead of starring building a new infrastructure in Greece and beyond are refusing to move on and accept the reality.

The US didn't actually "seize" Texas.  Texas won independence from Mexico, before becoming a part of the US 10 years later.  The US, a former colony of a European power seizing territory from Mexico, a former colony of a European power.  Post colonial Spaniards have no claim to jack.

The Texians just did whatever they had to do to keep their slaves.  That meant they had to secede from Mexico, and then secede from the US.  The US didn't finally "Seize" Texas until the end of the US Civil War.  And even after surrender, Texian slave masters didn't tell their slaves they were legally free until months after.  Hence the observance of June 19th as "Juneteenth."  Among the only survivors of the Alamo was a slave of Alamo Commander William Travis, whom the Mexicans decided not to execute (unlike the rest of the survivors who surrendered, whom the Mexicans just executed).  Of course the Mexicans didn't execute "Joe" and released him, as a PR move.

If rejoining the British Empire would have given them back the right to own slaves, they would have done that, too.

Actually Joe was returned to the heirs of Travis. Couple of years later he stole two horses and escaped. Sorry, Mexico could really have cared less and Juneteenth wasn't until June 19, 1865 the slaves of south Texas learned of the Emancipation. Had nothing to do with the Alamo. I do not like slavery of any type but dislike history modifications even more.

The unCivil War eliminated states sovereignty which was the real reason the South stood up to the DC criminals of the time.  The nation became the singular The United States rather than the old these united States. It was all finalized in the decades from 1900 - 1920.Slavery was already being phased out in the south at the time of the uncivil war.

Today we are all slaves to the same government that takes credit of freeing slaves.  A tyrannical monster that treats us as a cash cow and enemies of the state.

The only thing uncivil war decided was whether we would be a constitutional republic or just another shitbox democratic oligarchy controlled by banks. Guess which.

Looking around it's pretty obvious we turned out better than they hoped for,,, a bunch of sniveling factions of whiners trying to 'legally' steal as much as they can from the other factions.

Want to learn more about this, read "The Colder War" by Marin Katusa of Casey Research.  Great read, full of good information about why Putin is winning and will continue to win, while the US continues to squander what little we have left.

The only cards the US holds is the reserve currency (for now) and a strong military (until the money runs out).  I don't know any military family men who will work for free overseas, getting shot at, while mom and the kids starve back home.  Morale is already a problem with lots of the troops, and when the dollar collapses, the Military part of the MIC will follow suit in short order.

Russia is very rich in natural resources and Putin is a nationalist who has worked towards harnessing those resources and making his country attractive to trading partners.  What has the US done, other than bully our allies into doing what we want them to do?  Without a military and the reserve currency we have nothing to offer our allies.  At least Putin is for Russia.  What about the US? Who do we have working for Murika?

We're fucked.  At least until the average person wakes up.

Even when the USSR and NATO were within a hairs breath of nuclear war, the gas contracts of the USSR with Europe were met in full. In all the time that Russia has contracted gas to Europe, every contract has been filled. A 0% failure rate.

The only reason for Europe to move away from cheap reliable Russian gas is to satisfy the Neoconservative Zionist leadership in Washington DC.

Go ahead Europe, let a zionist elite in Washington convince you you don't want cheap unlimited reliable gas supplies, like those flowing into Germany from the North Stream.

Did the Germans back thier mark with gold, while they freed themselves from the the money changers hands, no, they people just had to except it, as currency, then watch they .01 % shit thier pants. They do not care what you use as long as they get thier cut. Seriously, I don't see how gold is any better if you have to pay to use it. Right, so what if you get paid in gold, if the king, or the people, take 90% to pay for the shit they can't afford.
It's ok to make money, lots if you can, as long as you can buy shit, for fair prices, and be honest doing it.

The 'strategy' has already been determined for the EU by Gazprom...

The southern half of Europe will get all their energy through Turkey, as the main wholesale and transit hub of all things, including Silk Road goods. Ukraine is being 'phased out' and 'erased' from the transit map, as soon as the pipes and routes are built, according to Gazprom's Miller.

The North will continue to get energy direct from Russia, because its the cheapest, and much cheaper than pumping up from Turkey or building LNG infrastructure and ships for Northern supply, from the US or Middle East, making it way too expensive an option in both capital outlay and energy unit costs, with such lovely, cheap and simple energy, already piped from a reliable source. The Russians reliably piped energy to Europe even during the Cold War.

I wonder how far along the process Greece and the other EU countries are in creating the necessary infrastructure, or are they expecting to bluff Gazprom into continuing with Ukraine? Perhaps they think Russia is as easy to manipulate as Greek politicians - maybe they are? I guess we shall have to wait for 2016, to find out what the energy and trade map is shaping up to look like.

Europa can start looking for energy sources elsewhere. Russian gas and oil will go to China in the future, so that old, worn and torn whore Europa better start looking for new business partners. Russia does not need that old whore, the whore needs Russia. Needs to be said though, the whore will have a high time finding cheap gas elsewhere, for there simply isn't any source for the magnitude of the whore's needs anyplace else in the vicinity; and as we all know, the further the souce from consumer, the higher the price is. The old whore lost! It will shiver first, and then fade and wither like all old whores must in the end. :)

As soon as conditions are right, the EU will consider reframing the energy relationship with Russia based on a level playing field in terms of market opening, fair competition, environmental protection and safety, for the mutual benefit of both sides," a draft of the Energy Union Package seen by Reuters says.

Ha! When has their ever been a level playing field between energy producers and consumers? Russia priced nat gas to the Uke at ridiculously low levels and the Uke scoffed at them, refusing to pay. I think Russia has its fill of "level playing fields" and will do what's right for Russia, the EU and US be damned.

"Ridiculously low levels"

Supply and demand set the price.  Production costs be damned.

Russian energy has leaks everywhere.  The Russian siloviki are skimming off the top. Local people are skimming profit.

All this works when you are in a centrally planned soviet economy and have no choice...

But Russia is not the only energy producer in the world,..

This is why Russia needs to militarily control the black sea basin.  Socially it cannot operate the energy business efficiently.  It has too much graft at all levels of the business,

Russia knows that if it has to compete on price with the North Africans or the Gulf countries it will lose.

So Russia seeks to remove customers' options to deal with lower-priced competitors.

The great irony for Russia is that it's great 'ally' China knows this, and is doing all it can to encourage Russia to militarily commit itself in the West.    And China has established great interests in energy supply from sparsely populated Novosibirsk.

On a related note... you notice that the Chinese Army has been talking loudly about fighting the US...but quietly increasing presence in XinJiang and Gansu provinces??

Sure, when asked they say they have a muslim extremist problem there... But that problem has been there for most of the last 1000 years.  Why all the recent activity?

I am certain that the Chinese, due to the recent energy agreements, will be very glad to help Russia by militarily protecting Novosibirsk while Russia is busy in Europe.

My thinking and it seems most likely, as it benefits the US and it's allies is: Let Russia do as it may about oil and gas for now, but their needs to be competition in the future. The US is overburdened with an excess of supply, therefore US will supply Europe LNG at a faster rate like 24/7/365 to alleviate the excess here and put the LNG or its gaseous counterpart in storage there in underground storage, which allows usage as needed. The US is watching out for it's petroleum companies and its farming industry also, by moving into Europe's breadbasket in Ukraine, so it can Sow up its rich farmland using US GM seeds and US produced farming equipment, eat your heart out China and Japan. Is this a conspiracy or good business? that is the question as Shakespeare so adequately put it. If so many Human lives were not at risk than let the economic wars continue as the winner is the consumer who gets more bang for it's Euro, if there is competition. For the resource supplying nations, they had better have a second method of keeping lots of people occupied with jobs or cell phone activity.  All the while Russia is using it's precious rubles for military purposes and letting it's business environment flounder, which assures it of a bleak future when oil and gas are in less demand. My advice, to my forefathers homeland, is build up your farming equipment industry and resource development tools to compete with the US where you costs are much lower and price is in your favor, if you can keep corrupt people out of those businesses and use more technically knowledable people to run your industries. Of course it is easier said than done, but at least have a target that is worth aiming for. Also we need to run all the war mongers out or town or office, as they can only see the money produced and not the splattered bodies who paid the true price of "trust your government".............. (Zero Hedge needs a spell cheekier!!!)

I overlooked all the nations who are defense weapons suppliers. Since there are no offensive weapons anymore, then let those businesses die!!  Stirring up nationalism and discontent about ones neighbor is all it takes to get a new weapon contract or "gift" which implies dependence and future maintenance sales and profits. Example: the Printer manufacturer routine where printers are sold at cost to make the buyer its slave to very expense inks! which the printers are useless without. The weapons industry is bigger than any other of this world, what does this say about us, are we really human or still fearful animals?
