The Necessity of Diversity to Understanding Truth

smartknowledgeu's picture

In SmartKnowledgeU Podcast #2, we discuss The Necessity of Diversity to Understanding Truth. Without realizing it, many of us lead remarkably non-diverse lives. We go to work and socialize with the same people in our office after work. If we socialize with people outside our office, often it is with people still in our industry that think like us. We go to dinner with people of the same socioeconomic status and remarkably shut out socializing with people that are from different economic means as us because we believe they have nothing to teach us. We socialize with people of the same nationality and never learn that people from other countries may have markedly different views of the world than our own. And if socialize with people of different religions, we have been taught that religion is a taboo subject so we never really learn anything about any other religion outside of our own. Human nature draws people to others that look like us and think like us yet such behavior ensures that we all remain unthinking robots and never learn the real nature of finance, religion, mathematics, science, astronomy, history and a myriad of other subject matters.

Diversity and the divergent thinking that arises from diverse perspectives are the most important teachers of critical thinking, and critical thinking, in turn, is the most important teacher of realizing the truth about almost all matters in life. We should all make a concerted effort to embrace as much diversity as possible in all facets of our lives. If anything, embracing diversity in our lives will steer us towards a process that provides us a much greater chance of uncovering the truth from the mountains of propaganda spewed by the mainstream media. The fact that the mainstream media is fraught with much more propaganda than truth is not a new concept, as Noam Chomsky discussed this topic at great length in his seminal book Manufacturing Consent more than a decade ago. However, today, diversity in our way of thinking is absolutely necessary to understanding truth, as things often are not what they appear to be. For example, is Syriza really fighting for the Greek citizens against the bankers, or are they a George Soros funded front to fool the people once again? The truth behind questions like this is often buried under mountains of propaganda and the only way to have a chance at arriving at the truth is to embrace as many possible perspectives as possible.

In our second podcast, we discuss why diversity in our lives is absolutely necessity to understanding truth.

Just give me a system where a man or woman rises or falls on his or her's hard work or innovative thinking.
Stop handicapping the game.
In the USA, we used to celebrate thinking out of the box.

My current favorite. Scott Walker getting beat up because he did not get a degree. WTF? Neither did Bill Gates. Neither did every millionaire, business owner I know personally. It's almost as if it is a mark of intelligence to recognize what college is, and get out with your brain intact. If you wish to learn, everything ever done, researched or conceived is at your fingertips.

We know, beyond all doubt, the system is rigged. Manipulated. To be a drone in that system, makes you what?

Death to the Free Shit Army.

"...we discuss why diversity in our lives is absolutely necessity to understanding truth..."

Except in Climate Change. There, the truth is settled, and the only discussion is how much we should pay...

Noam Chomsky recommending diversity? He is one of a few campus speakers is not hounded and cajoled off a college's podium. The rowdy leftist profs and students love Chomsky, NOT because they are open to diversity!

This article strikes at the heart of the reason why cooperative civilization evolved in the first place; ie: why the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  Much as each of us may wish to be divergent in all aspects of their life, the very act of doing this, when taken to its natural extreme, will erase our identity and thus turn us into the essence of chaos.  Our identity requires us to create certain character anchors, which in turn will somewhat impact our ability to be divergent.  This is why searching far and wide for multiple perspectives from a diverse background of individuals, coupled with healthy critiquing, is the best known route for the creation of optimal (within the limits of the opinion sampled group) holistic solutions.

This is why our current system of schooling, which is high on obedience while avoiding any practical development of true critical thinking (do not be fooled by the labels used by educators – often their version of critical thinking is teaching students to blindly discredit anything that does not come from the national mass media outlets) strikes at the heart of our economic dysfunction; how can our economy flourish when we have prevented our work force from developing the skills necessary to optimally evolve our products and services so that they remain the most competitive in their field.

This is the final irony of the hundredth percentile of the hundredth percentile – in order to preserve their stature at the apex of society, they have had to neutralize the ability of the populace to think, which was the very capability that created the apex, on which they sit today.

They say diversity is a strength. They also say Big Foot rambles through the Canadian forests. I've never seen immutable evidence for either.

I saw Big Foot at Wal*Mart this weekend. He was trying to return a rice cooker and was being very polite. I could not detect ay hint of a Canadian accent.

Good article. Let different ideas sink in and compete with what you believe to be the truth. Let this competition continue throughout your life.

The truth should stay in place no matter the view. If it changes based on the view it might not be truth.

Good article, being open to diversity of thought (on a host of topics) is the best way to understand and find truth. It can also validate why one seeks out the company they choose to keep.

Which there is nothing wrong with either ;-)

The Disclosure experience of Dr. Greer serves as an example of how diversity is essential to making sound decisions on a very important topic.
