Despite US/Israel Demands, 'Isolated' Russia Offers Iran Advanced Anti-Aircraft Missiles

Tyler Durden's picture

With proxy wars mounting and "isolated" Russia ratifying The BRICS Bank this week, we are sure Washington is preparing to double-down on 'costs' (to Europeans) as Reuters reports, Russia has offered Iran its latest Antey-2500 missiles (ironically after a deal to supply less powerful S-300 missiles was dropped under Western pressure in 2010). While the United States and Israel lobbied Russia to block the missile sale, the head of Russian state defense conglomerate, Sergei Chemezov, says, "as far as Iran is concerned, we offered Antey-2500 instead of S-300. They are thinking. No decision has been made yet."

As Reuters reports, last year, Russian foreign arm sales totaled $13 billion... and it appears they are looking for growth in 2015...

Russia has offered Iran its latest Antey-2500 missiles, the head of Russian state defense conglomerate Rostec said on Monday according to media reports, after a deal to supply less powerful S-300 missiles was dropped under Western pressure.

Sergei Chemezov said Tehran was now considering the offer, TASS news agency reported.

Russia scrapped a contract to supply Iran with S-300 surface-to-air missiles under Western pressure in 2010, and Iran later filed a $4-billion international arbitration suit against Russia in Geneva, but the two countries remain allies.

The United States and Israel lobbied Russia to block the missile sale, saying it could be used to shield Iran's nuclear facilities from possible future air strikes.

...

"As far as Iran is concerned, we offered Antey-2500 instead of S-300. They are thinking. No decision has been made yet," Chemezov was quoted as saying.

Rostec includes state-owned arms exporting monopoly Rosoboronexport, which has the sole right to export and import arms in Russia.

...

Chemezov told reporters conflicts in the Middle East had helped boost Russian arm sales, according to TASS.

"I don't conceal it, and everyone understands this, the more conflicts there are, the more they buy off weapon from us. Volumes are continuing to grow despite sanctions. Mainly, it's Latin America and the Middle East," he was quoted as saying.

*  *  *

The Antey-2500 was developed from the 1980s-generation S-300V system (SA-12A Gladiator and SA-12B Giant). It can engage missiles traveling at 4,500 meters per second, with a range of 2,500 km (1,500 miles), according to the company that makes it, Almaz-Antey.

The S-300 missiles have a 125-mile range and Russia has stoked tensions with the West by trying to sell them to Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.

Rab makes nine years the minimum; but if one committed sodomy with a child of lesser age, no guilt is incurred. Samuel makes three the minimum.

Russian foreign arm sales totaled $13 billion...

C'mon, the US' fed reserve has, can and will print / conceive and deliver that much in ~4 calendar days.  It's no wonder we have 10 carriers and 2 in reserve when any other of the next most militaristic nations have 1 or 2, each with at best one fourth the capability of any of our commissioned vessels.

That's the thing that never made sense to me about Iran's Nuclear Program.  IE, if they really wanted nukes, they could just buy them on the open market.  So what sense does it make to shut down a supposed nuclear development program?

Because its about nuclear power generation, not weapons.

Iran has always had a power shortage.Hard to wrap your head around because of their oil,

but they didn't even have enough power to refine that oil.

I'm not sure you can 'just' buy nukes on the open market.

And even if you could... could you be sure they'd work when you needed them? "Hey Kim, that nuke you sold us failed to blow up Tel Aviv after Nuttyahoo turned Tehran to glass" "Oh? So solly!"

To run nukes reliably you need in-house expertise at every stage of manufacture.

Frankly, I'm amazed Iran aren't trying to develop nukes. I certainly would if I lived within striking distance of mad-dog Israel.

I suspect if the pressure on Russia gets too much, they'll sell Teehran nukes and then we can all just get on wth our lives.

Meanwhile: fuck you, Netanyahu.

MAnned fighter aircraft are already ENTIRELY obsolete for controlling skies in the next phase of war.

massive numbers of persistent high altitude drones don't need to maneuver, they just need to patrol large swaths of sky with their fire and forget missiles.

it's the missiles that do the work. the air planes are just the vector. the only thing fighter aircraft will be good for is complex missions like escort.

for total control of the sky, persistent patrol by drone carrying the same misslies carried by a fighter aircraft, combined with space based location and targeting systems.

also, with drones-----you can make more of them and get them flying faster. expertise in flying doesn't die with a pilot when you shoot down a drone.

manned aircraft are probably already entirely obsolote in the skunkworks, it's only a matter of time before they showcase the crazy stuff they already have. more likley they won't until ww3 for fear of technology theft.

Check out the current Fed vice chair: Zionist.  Check out the current Fed chair: Zionist.  Check out the previous Fed Chair: Zionist... Sigh... ok, check out the previous-pervious Fed Chair: Zionist

What chance do Americans have, let alone other normal people (i.e. Goyim in the view of these Zionists)....

First, let me say I love Putin. He and the Chinese are our best bets for ending the ponzi scheme house of cards known as the USD.

Time will tell if Putin actually turns these SAM systems over to Iran and Iran has the balls to actually activate them. It will be nothing short of hilarious to watch Israeli jets blown the fuck out of the sky in droves. But sadly, I have my doubts. Iran has the money.... I'm at a loss to understand why they like being raped so much and keep letting the tribe get away with bombing them with no retaliation coming out of Tehran. Unless and until you stand up to the bully, you'll continue getting your ass kicked.

While I am with you on ending the USD reserve status, this doesn't lead me to love Putin.

The best bet for getting through the next couple of decades with a minimum of destruction (at all levels) will be for each entity - the US, Europe (ex Russia), Russia, and China - to break apart from within.

Thinking that having a war between the Russians/Chinese and the US/Europeans is a solution makes me sad.  Will that end the USD hegemony?  Almost certainly.  But the collateral damage would be horrific.  I do appreciate that the Russians appear unwilling to play along with the NWO, and are thus preventing a way too large concentration of power in any one group, but that doesn't mean that they are to be loved.  I just want them to be able to go their way, and us to be able to go ours, trading with each other when beneficial.  A war would be a very brutal affair, and would not likely lead to the scenario I would like to see at the end of this.

If ZATO figures all their shit will be toast before it hits target, they may back down. What Idiot in their right mind wants to fight Russia/China anyway? You want to "win" be a better businessman! You get the money and the chicks are free. Something in the Western leadership is really twisted, but, alas, I preach to those others who also seek Peace, not War.

It is a Defense. The link says it has enhanced ECM capabilities, which the Russkies are good at (USS Cook?)

The Cook story was never commented upon by the West.

The Cook story is denied by Pentagon trolls, but no official comment was ever made. What we do know is that the ship left station right after the incident. I can tell you from experience, the US Navy does not back down when a Russian unit is making testing approaches. Either submarine, surface ship or aircraft. The fact that the Cook hauled ass out of there straight to port is very telling. I do not know, but I suspect the electronic super radars and super computers, and many data links to other USN assets. I suspect Russian electronic warfare can disrupt. Lets be clear, Physics is physics. There is no American physics that favors America. Russia knows physics and can use those laws just as well as anyone. That is why I do not believe in all this computer controlled warfare lasting long in a real battle. Whenever you use electronics, you open the door for that to be disrupted.

The author of the article clearly has very limited knowledge of military affairs. S-300 refers to an entire family of missile systems.  Russia originally offered the S-300PMU (aka the SA-10), now they are offereing the S-300VM (aka the SA-12)  They are not all that different in capability.  The former has a range of 150km, the later 200km (not 2500km pasted from the marketing brochure, LOL).  The SA-10 has better performance against low flying targets, the SA-12 is better against ballistic missiles.  The SA-12's radar can engage more targets, but it's launchers only have 2 missiles vs 4 per launcher for the SA-10.

S300V4 which this is has a range of up to 400km as tested by Russian Forces last year, the range quoted of 2500km refers to the range of the ballistic missile target that it can intercept with confidence. Ballistic missiles have various ranges and this is meant for those at the shorter end of ballistic range not ICBMs or intermediate range ballistic missiles.

This system is intended to protected a marching army from incoming ballistic missiles (hence armoured and tracked vehicles). It has less missiles and is less suited to an anti aircraft role in comparison to the wheeled versions as desired by Iran initially. Iran cannot get the system they originally wanted as it is no longer produced with the Russians focusing on building the S400 systems instead (not for export yet either).

Rumours of deals and approvals do not equate to delivery of systems. Sure in time they will but Russia gotta protect Russia first and then sell them on plus with China copying the shit out of them and then trying to sell them on reduces Russia's export market as was the case with the S300 series and the completely indigineous Chinese HQ-9 system.

The West -mainly America- has brought this upon themselves. In the 90s there was a window of opportunity to bring Russia into the fold. But instead of teaming up with the right people and transfer Russia into a proper democracy with a functioning economy and fairly transparent governance, the West decided to run Russian economy further into the ground by teaming up with wannabe oligarchs. The boys from Yale and cowboy capitalists hooked up with these people that destroyed Russian state assets, stripping it for its valuable parts and liquidating that. Russia lost 40% of its GDP and millions lost their jobs. Eventually that led to the rise of Putin and his henchmen.

This confrontational stand one day will go very wrong. We are no longer governed by people that have seen the horrors of WWII but by a bunch of madmen -at all sides- who are willing to take a shot with the lives of the rest of us (while this planet has really serious issues that are more important than geopolitical flexing of the muscles)
