Obama Vetoes Keystone Pipeline Bill

Tyler Durden's picture

Remember when shortly after the avalanche victory of the GOP in both the House and the Senate the pundits said that with the lame duck president in his final stretch, now is the time when long-overdue legislation would finally get passed? They were wrong.

  • OBAMA NOTIFIES U.S. SENATE OF VETO OF KEYSTONE PIPELINE APPROVAL BILL
  • OBAMA VETOES REPUBLICAN ATTEMPT TO FORCE KEYSTONE APPROVAL

The full Obama letter:

The Republican reaction:

  • U.S. SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL SAYS CHAMBER WILL CONSIDER OVERRIDE OF KEYSTONE PIPELINE VETO NO LATER THAN MARCH 3.
  • BOEHNER SAYS OBAMA KEYSTONE VETO IS `NATIONAL EMBARASSMENT'

As Bloomberg adds, Obama’s action sets up new round of votes in Congress that will likely fail as supporters don’t have enough backing to override veto. As a reminder, the Senate vote was 62-36, while House vote was 270-152; with a two-thirds majority required to override veto.

Of course, when the Fed gives a greenlight to keep pumping up the "wealth effect" and make the rich - the same people who contro Congress anyway - richer, who actually needs any laws getting passed? Indeed, in the immortal words of Chuck Schumer, when the Mr. Chairmanwoman is "getting to work", Congress is merely ornamental.

Many Canadians are vehemently opposed to Keystone, which is perceived as another sellout to American fascist interests.  Viewed objectively, it can be viewed as good news for Canada, as alternative pipeline routes are now considerably more likely to receive approval, especially the Northern Gateway to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, which when constructed will bring oilsands production to the BC coast for tanker export to Asia-Pacific and other markets.  The sooner the better, as far as I'm concerned.  Canada needs that revenue to pay for all its social(ist) programs, and the longer the government drags it out, the more potential customers will lock up deals with competitors. Get moving!

I should have said Kitimat, not Prince Rupert, although Prince Rupert would be better because the town is located closer to open ocean, whereas tanker traffic to Kitimat will mean negotiation of a complex fjord (waterway).  The important thing is that all the jobs and profits stay in Canada and not some foreign nation. <g>

"I find it somewhat inexplicable that he remains with so many supporters "

can't speak about his support in the US. among the allies, partners, clients and protectorates of the US... we aren't happy about him

but then, we often think about his greatest, Peace-Nobel Prize winning reason why we somehow "don't hate" him:

he is not George W. Bush and he is not Dick Cheney

but hey, I'm wasting words here, I could as well ask why Americans put so much power in the hands of one man alone, or why you spend so much time interpreting your constitution instead of clarifying it or adapting it with constitutional amendments

the US Presidency was always of an imperial nature. then the international scene of the young USA was of powerful Kings, Sultans and Emperors

the US Congress was always the weaker House, and the Senate the key political body... because US Senators were representatives of the State legislatures (i.e. a balanced federation)

not long ago, in ZH was possible to read Americans commenting about an abrogation of the 17th Amendment. where are they now? left the field for the gallery?

Environmental risks?  Yeah, just like the Alaskan Pipeline 30+ years ago, which has been quiety transporting oil safely, cheaply and with so few incidents nobody even thinks about it any more.  Those kinds of risks.  The risk that something might actually go right in the this country from time to time.  But not while this asshole is in office.

Probably the only rational poster on here that gets it.

The Keystone pipeline is a gross violation of property rights. Keep in mind that this bill would give the power of eminent domain to a multinational company. So not only is this a property rights violation, it is also a sovereignty violation on top of that.

I'm kind of shocked that a libertarian site wants to see the government exert force on citizens into surrendering their property over to a multinational corporation. If you want to build a pipeline, that's fine, but do it without crony capitalism and without the force of the state.

Tue, 02/24/2015 - 18:21 | 5824036 Pure Evil

There's no sovereignty violation.

Don't ya know?

You're right, we all know that Obama vetoed it because "MUH ENVIRONMENT!" and "MUH BUFFET RAILROADS!". Koch's are pissed!  After bankrolling plenty of GOP candidates to push for a private pipeline and they end up getting nothing? What a waste of "free speech dollars" that the Supreme Court says are protected.  What good is being a billionaire if you can't sway elections to your favor? There's no fun if you can't prop up stealth candidates, use "Citzen's United" and the Cayman Islands Banks as a campaign $ tool.

"One man, one vote" ain't cutting it anymore. It should be revised to where every $ you own is a "vote." 40 billion dollars = 40 billion votes. 1,200 dollars = 1,200 votes.

It's obvious the Koch's have more "skin in the game" than to be thwarted by some executive power thingy. Comodification ought to find it's simplest form ever, "One dollar, one vote"

Thanks for mentioning Paris in your comments AchtungAffen : ) I've been seemingly alone here in pointing to it's true significance.

As far as I'm concerned, BAU ended in the Autumn of 2012. It ended before the re-election of Obama. It ended before Super-storm Sandy. It ended when the Arctic sea ice extent crashed. Decision makers at every level had a plan up until then. Then Sandy, just to bring the fact home.

I curse Obama and the UN for what happened in Copenhagen but today's veto is an SOS distress call to Paris. Perfect!

This shit-show is coming to an end in Paris because it must. This is not a test.

"Through this bill, the United States Congress attempts to circumvent longstanding and proven processes for determining whether or not building and operating a cross-border pipeline serves the national interest."

What kind of fucking mumble jumble lawyerese jive ass shit talk is this?  "...proven processes.."?  What the fuck does that mean?  We have to have a "proven process" for fucking laying pipe?  Gawd, 696 more days of putting up with this fucking retard coon.

Pipelines can be done responsibly but what's gone on during North Dakota's pipeline frenzy has been a disaster.  After constant pipeline rupters there was an article in a local paper saying they were making sweeping and unprecedented changes to how pipelines were regulated in ND.  What is their grand solution????

Requiring flow meters.  No shit.

If you want massive profits NOW NOW NOW!! Then flow meters cut into profit. Overpressuring pipelines increases profit. Think short term, like every 90 days.

Yeah if you want a good laugh: http://www.inforum.com/news/legislature/3685777-bills-add-regulations-research-pipelines-north-dakota

And the wild eyed snatch that wrote this story is related to the Governor.  The same Governor who took a 700 million dollar fund set aside for the 9,000 guys who have had their faces or arms blown off while working in the Bakken (for prosthetics and such) and denied their claims and gave the money back to the corporations. http://www.midwestenergynews.com/2015/01/09/documentary-highlights-dangers-for-bakken-oil-field-workers/

What is up with Barry's grammar? Is he high?

The commas in the first and second sentences are simply wrong. In the second paragraph he starts two sentences with the conjuctions "but" and "and". Then, when he finally has the need of a comma or two, he makes up some new form "--".

This level of control over the fundamentals of his language sets a remarkable example.

Is this guy too good for the english language? Is he trying to pick a fight with it?

 uh,

Obama only vetoed the process, not the pipeline.

It's just another, in a long series, of deceptive moves by Obama.

The pipeline will be approved through the normal administrative process.

Obama knows that.

But this way he can appear to be concerned with the environment,

something which he has repeatedly shown he is not.

He can also foster the illusion that the two parties are at loggerheads,

which they are not.

Just shoring up that loyal union democrat vote.  Morons.  Obama doesn't even know what a pipeline is.
