Western "Boots On The Ground" In Ukraine: Britain Sends 75 "Military Advisers" To Combat "Russia-Backed Aggression"

Tyler Durden's picture

In what we believe is the first touchdown of Western 'boots-on-the-ground' in Ukraine, Britain's David Cameron stated today that British military personnel are to be deployed to Ukraine for the first time in the next few weeks to provide advice and training to government troops. As The Guardian reports, Britain would be “the strongest pole in the tent”, and argued for tougher sanctions against Moscow if Russian-backed militias in eastern Ukraine failed to observe the ceasefire. The MoD said up to 75 personnel would begin to deploy to Ukraine from next month as Cameron warned sanctions could become "materially different" and held out SWIFT exclusion once again.

As The Guardian reports,

British military personnel are to be deployed to Ukraine for the first time in the next few weeks to provide advice and training to government troops, David Cameron announced before a committee of MPs.

The prime minister said Britain would be “the strongest pole in the tent”, and argued for tougher sanctions against Moscow if Russian-backed militias in eastern Ukraine failed to observe the provisions of a ceasefire agreement reached this month with the Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko.

The Ministry of Defence said up to 75 personnel would begin to deploy to Ukraine from next month as part of the training mission... for up to six months.

...

Cameron said Europe listened to Britain on how to implement sanctions, and he said the level of sanctions “might become materially different” in the future . He held out the possibility of excluding Russia from the international Swift banking payments system, saying there was a logic to such a move if Moscow continued trying to “dismember” Ukraine.

“I think what we should be putting in to place is a sense that if there is another Debaltseve [a Ukrainian town seized by pro-Russia forces this month] then that will trigger a round of sanctions that will be materially different to what we have seen so far,” he said.

...

He suggested it would be “miraculous” if the terms of the 12 February ceasefire agreement brokered in Minsk by Merkel and Hollande were met in full.

The prime minister said the UK was not at the stage of providing “lethal weapons” to Ukraine, but hinted that might change if the US changed its view.

“We have announced a whole series of non-lethal equipment – night-vision goggles, body armour – which we have already said that we will give to Ukraine,” he said. “Over the course of the next month we are going to be deploying British service personnel to provide advice and a range of training, from tactical intelligence to logistics to medical care, which is something else they have asked for.

...

He said there was no doubt about Russian support for the rebels. “What we are seeing is Russian-backed aggression, often these are Russian troops, they are Russian tanks, they are Russian Grad missiles. You can’t buy these things on eBay, they are coming from Russia, people shouldn’t be in any doubt about that.

“We have got the intelligence, we have got the pictures and the world knows that. Sometimes people don’t want to see that but that is the fact.”

*  *  *

We suspect Putin will not be impressed at the 'encroachment'.

The Anglo-American empire wants war with the the Russians, no doubt about that. Let´s see if they are read to send Tommys and Sams to get killled in Ukraine. But i guess they´ll send Canuks and Aussies, their usual cannon fodder.

Can't have mercs on the ground w/o advisors

Don’t forget about the Kiwi’s.

They always go along with the Aussies and Canucks.

Cameron will be sure to send in his legendary Scottish Highlanders. Scotlands bloodlust for war was clearly affirmed when it finally legally acceded to British Imperialism in the past referendum.

They just want to get some uniformed NATO troops killed, then blame it on the Russians = WW3.

Naw, you're just looking way too ahead. All this is about is keeping the SAS sharp. You know, just some practice war. /sarc

ISIS however apparently does buy it's weapons on eBay and it seems the British are more than happy to deliver them...

I can't believe the gall to do this. France and Germany are at the negotiating table and he sends troops there. I really wonder what the Eastern Europeans will write about this, in the next days

Isn't Cameron or whatever his name is a tribalist? I believe so. Btw, the Guardian is insane on Ukraine. Pro-Nazi all the way.

I can't believe the British public will go along with this after Northern Ireland, the Falklands, and the disasterous mideast wars. What makes them think they will do any better in Ukraine?

kananga's picture

Apparently the Brits were feeling left out.

giovanni_f's picture

That was only because nobody spoke English at Minsk. Negotiation was done in Russian, Merkel translated to Hollande what she thought he needed to know. Poroshenko wasn't asked.

McMolotov's picture

This could rightfully be seen as an attempt by the US and UK to undermine the influence of France and Germany. I'm starting to wonder how much the people "at the top" actually talk to one another anymore. I find that extremely disconcerting.

It seems the West isn't nearly as united as the media have led us to believe. This could easily turn into one hell of a (much bigger) mess.

ZerOhead's picture

This is all part of a much larger plan that has been developed over years by the NeoCons. There are 'rifts' in the ranks however (Kissinger etc.) so hopefully a situation in which a nuclear war could start still might be avoided.

That said the NeoLiberalisation and financialisation of Western economies has weakened them massively to the point of collapse while building up new potential enemies like China. So don't expect anything positve to come from these NeoGeniuses...

giovanni_f's picture

US and UK were left out in negotiations in Minsk. Peace was never an option for them. Plan was and is to disrupt any process that might leasd to a stabilization of Ukraine. UK has made a start with this symbolic gesture in the hope Russia will react to this provocation. If Russia keeps cool - what it will, they will continue with provocations. At some point US will enter the scene, at that point we know that UK has played its role as first provoker and US will overtake.

US and UK have the corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs on their side. That guarantees that Ukraine is completely doomed.

Ghordius - I must admit I'm in total shock too.

IF and only IF Camoron is trying to make himself look like a big man for the May elections may this be a non event OTHERWISE the NWO has shown it's hand and THERE WILL BE WAR.

GCT's picture

@Ghordius

This is the only move that worries me Ghordius.  Germany and France and I imagine most of the Europeans do not want war again on thier continent.  France was invited along for cover while Ms Merkel made the deal.  Most Western people do not know squat about what is going on over there. I imagine most Europeans do not know much either.

I dread this to be honest and Putin stated he will use tactical nukes if he had too.  This is not a smart move on Cameron's part but GB is in bed with the USA.  We are mad in my mind to play chess in this region.  The Kiev government has already lost and many news outlets around the world are reporting it.  Even Poroshenko's military are telling the worlld they got their asses handed to them in the cauldron.

But the USA is dead set on trying to control the old silk road.  It may well be our undoing as more and more allies tell the USA to stop meddling in their region.

Looks like Mister Cameron needs a War more than anyone else.

With the Economic Turmoil, desolate Mfg Base, cheap Oil, and Real Estate (only thing propping them up) due to Bubble and Collapse - he's due to be booted pretty soon when the GBR Economy dives...

No need for ebay, ISIS took much of their weapons from 'moderate' Muslims, lol.

As far as Ukraine, it was always packed with Soviet-era weapons, which were there even despite the fact that Ukraine was trading them left and right. Rebels took their weapons either from old arsenals or from Ukrainian army, look how much they left behind in Debaltsevo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S1iMG9gBH4 . Also, notice at 1:33 instructions written in English for exactly the reason that Western mercs are commanding Ukrainian troops, ahem 'advising' them.

send that faggot Cameron to the front! pronto!

Biden already sent his son... perhaps Cameron could send his wife...

sun tzu's picture

Biden sent his son to loot what is left of Ukraine after the bankers are done. It would be wonderful if the Ukrainians lynched all of these western carpetbaggers destroying their country

geno-econ's picture

By Golly, I think youve got it----- Those 75 Englishmen are being sent to God foresaken Ukraine to protect Poroshenko and Little Biden, and to teach them how to speak proper English.  Yes I think Youve got it

angel_of_joy's picture

Well, the Brits are having general elections in May this year. If Cameron thinks that sending troops into Ukraine is a winning strategy (say, against UKIP) then I wish him the best of luck. Personally, I believe he'll be sorely dissapointed... Time will tell.

logicalman's picture

Cameron would shit his pants if you were to sneak up behind him and say BOO.

He's only brave enough to send others to die so that he and his cronies can stay home and use tough words.

To say I despise him and all like him is a HUGE understatement. I don't think the words I'm looking for exist in the English language.

It's quoted wrong - that's 75% of personnel and going by all the fly overs around my village; they've been training for this atleast 6months.

SteveNYC's picture

I don't think modern day Britain is capable of delivering such a dose of lethality to Russia, adequate to have the bear even bother to turn its head.....

EddieLomax's picture

So you propose that we should not be lap dogs of the US by being lap dogs of the Russian's?

Sod both of them, the UK is a sovereign country and Ukraine is a sovereign country, Russia has no say over our decision to send lethal weaponry to Ukraine, especially since it is eagerly sending lethal weaponry to Argentina.

Ghordius's picture

"the UK is a sovereign country..."

yes, and the UK releases news that it will send military advisors to Ukraine while Germany and France are at the negotiating table with Ukraine and Russia

which is a diplomatic affront to both France and Germany even if you want to leave Ukraine and Russia out of it

even if there are secret agreements among them. The Cameron Cabinet shows that it gives a fig about continental perceptions. Nothing new in this

Urtica ferox's picture

I gather our Glorious Leader (Without a Mandate), John Key (all hail!) wants to send some of our army guys to help out the Seppos. Just want y'all to know not all kiwis agree with Key - in fact probably the majority oppose it.

Was discussing this with a couple of "educated" acquaintances last night who were all RaRa!! for it - until my question "If it's such a good idea, why don't you two join the army and go help out?"

<<Crickets>>

SteveNYC's picture

Down under, they have been lulled into some sense of "Russia is weak", a "faded military power" etc etc. They have no idea. The boat Putin parked off Brisbane a few months back could have taken out the entire Aussie navy without breaking a sweat. And its not their navy you need to worry about. This is a country to be left alone militarily, and the pollies need to wise up with their rhetoric and propaganda before shit starts getting out of control.

Give Minsk II a go, let these guys sort out their border problems and everybody else can stay home.

The news this morning is several thousand Australian & New Zealand troopers off to Iraq in an "advisory" capacity. Ukraine is sure to follow.

Anyone would think there was a debt crisis with the way they're blowing billions of $ on military adventure. Not to mention the $billions they have already & will continue to blow on domestic "anti terror" stuff.

Abitdodgie's picture

Anyone who has joined the army and commited thier life to killing other humans can go die a sad wasted death because they are the scum of the world , what the fuck has Ukraine done to America or England , that's right nothing but don't worry plenty of people will be happy to go, please go die for your masters you pices of shit.

opport.knocks's picture

I can't imagine too many Canadians volunteering for this mission, especially those Canadians of Ukrainian heritage.

Also there are already advisors from the US, including 2 generals over there. What more advice can they possibly give? They already have the false flag angle, and PR war covered

Ukraine's real problem is they do not have an army that wants to shoot their own countrymen for the benefit of a bunch of corrupt oligarchs and the US's geo-poliitical interests

BorisTheBlade's picture

It was an open secret, this makes it official. The only thing left is for Western 'advisers' to come in direct confrontation with the Russian ones.

Bankster Kibble's picture

It probably already happened in Debaltsevo.  Who were those black skinned soldiers fighting for the pro-Kiev forces?  The Ukraine army is lily white.
