Caught On Tape: Florida Parents Treated Like Children For Questioning School Curriculum

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

David Bolduc, a resident of Naples, Florida recently sent us a note highlighting a video in which he, and several other concerned parents, were reprimanded and treated like little children in a School Board Workshop as a result of them expressing concerns about school curriculum.

In order to give you some background on the issue, see the Letter to the Editor he wrote to the Naples Daily News on 1/28 to say what he was prevented from saying at the 1/20 School Board Workshop. Letter reprinted below:

Patton the cause

The controversy behind the recent parents’ review of school textbooks lays squarely at the feet of Superintendent Kamela Patton.

Specifically, Collier County School Board Policy 2240 reads, “Furthermore, the Superintendent shall prepare administrative procedures detailing the manner in which students and parents will be adequately informed, each year, regarding their right to inspect instructional materials, and the procedure for completing such an inspection.”

By failing to prepare procedures to implement Board Policy 2240, Patton created the perception the textbook review was a nighttime Watergate-style break-in masterminded by conservative political operative and School Board member G. Gordon Lichter.

I examined seventh-grade “Civics in Practice” and it contained numerous factual inaccuracies. For example, on Page 100 it states, “The Constitution can be changed in two ways; formally by Amendment, and informally by Government.” This notion of dictatorship is enhanced by eighth-grade textbook “United States History,” which states on Page 185, “The President issues Executive Orders. These commands have the power of law.”

While some called us book-burning Nazis, Page 274 of “Civics in Practice” states, “Citizens must be alert to propaganda” and glittering generalities is a “type of propaganda which often uses words such as freedom and patriotism.” This world government indoctrination is augmented on Page 425, where a geographical map of North America eliminates the United States, and places our great nation in nine new “cultural nations.”

For pointing this out, one public speaker at the School Board textbook workshop called us “narrow-minded, racist Bible-thumpers.”

Thank you, Superintendent Patton.

David has assured me that there is absolutely zero racist or religious angle to any of his concerns, and that this is being shamelessly injected into the argument due to an inability to debate the actual concerns.

Without further ado, take a look at how contemptuously and dismissively these parents’ concerns are dealt with at the Collier Country School Board Workshop...

*As a disclaimer, we are not well versed in the intricacies of this debate, nor have we personally reviewed Collier County school materials. We welcome and encourage open debate in the comment section.

That is simply not true. Find me a source?

There’ve always been a multitude of positions on the left – and dating back much longer than 100 years (I know that is a long time in ‘the American “intellectual” tradition’). Libertarian Socialism, Anarchist Socialism, State Socialism, Democratic Socialism, Reformist Socialism, Revolutionary Socialism, Christian Socialism etc. etc. They all share a focus on common property rights but differ in their position towards the role of the state.

Communism is a distinct ideology that focus on the need for a revolutionary avant-garde, that has the goal to seize the capitalist state. When the state is seized its power should be used to transform the society towards socialism (including 'reeducating the masses'). That – of course – never happens. Instead we see examples like USSR with state capitalism (not common property, but state property) and that has nothing to do with socialism.

During the Spanish Civil War – and in USSR – the Communists were seen as the enemy by libertarian socialists and anarchists alike. Stalin murdered hundred of thousands of left-wing intellectuals (including the most known Trotsky). In the Spanish Civil War the anarchists and socialists fought the communists just as hard as the fascist.

And this i not a pure academic debate. TPTB spends billions miseducating us – especially when it comes to ideologies that challenge the status quo.

I’m NOT A COMMUNIST. I’m a libertarian socialist/anarchist. But we need to call the shit that’s going on by the right names.

“If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things”

-Confucius

Paraphrased as a chinese proverb stating "The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name."

I agree. So lets call US what it is: A proto-fascist state servicing a tiny cleptocratic ‘elite’ (0,01%). That seems like the right terms for me. But you think communism fits better – how/why?

Government is not equal socialism.

You can have (as in US) fascist governments. Governments serving the interests of their corporate masters. That is NOT socialism. The propaganda they spew includes the demonization of socialism. It’s been demonized since the McCarthy-area and until know.

I’ve yet only meet few (and all university students studying abroad) US citizens who actually knows what socialism is, and I’ve studied in private US universities.

The propaganda has clearly worked.

Yes it is, it's called National Socialism. Otherwise known as NAZI-ism/Fascism.

Thu, 02/26/2015 - 05:44 | 5830543 Memedada
Memedada's picture

So you refer to the masters of propaganda, when you ‘try’ to get a grasp of ideologies? National Socialism was a clever name for a political party with no socialist ambitions whatsoever. They did however know, that the real socialism was gaining traction in 30’s Europe, and to gain popular support they needed to tap into the (at that time) success of the labor unions. Many parts of Germany was briefly taken over by syndicalists and socialists popular movements. The real socialist and the Nazis fought to the death in the streets.

The Nazis of Germany was a pure fascist party. Fascism and socialism are opposite.

You can call stuff whatever you want, but TPTB enjoys when ignorance is spread. And in that regard you’re a tool.

PS. If your ‘logic’ is correct then all governments should be called Nazi and not socialist.

"Fascism and Socialism are opposite."

Your ignorant bullshit won't get you far here at Zerohedge. They aren't "opposite", they are very closely related. One is National Socialism, the other is International Socialism.

National Socialism was killed in 1945. Thanks to the ascendancy of international corporations, international organizations like the UN, the European Community, NATO, etc., all socialists are International Socialists today.

The answer is simple and most effective: PULL YOUR CHILDREN OUT OF GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS, AND HOME SCHOOL THEM. ENCOURAGE OTHERS YOU KNOW TO DO THE SAME. I understand many are dual workers {Government's intention} and schooling your children at home isn't possible. But I guarantee you that someone in your neighborhood, or close by homeschools, and would take on your children for a reasonable fee. Anyone still sending their children to gubmint schools is guilty of child neglect, and reckless endangerment.  Not only will your children be better educated, but they will be safer too. Gubmint schools are both warzones and cesspools. Enough parents do this, and enrollments will drop at the indoctrination camps, resulting in lay offs of these little Commissars.

IT AIN'T the school boards.  THEY didn't design the curriculum, or print the books.

They are just like the cops upholding the law,  They didn't write the law.

Yes, public schools are fucked.  But for parents that have to work there is no other option.  It's basically day care.  The price you pay is your child gets indoctrinated.

How are people supposed to home school their child when they have to go earn a paycheck to pay rent and put food on the table?

"there is no other option" BULLSHIT! If a parent CARES ENOUGH, their is always an option. get off of your ass, and find an alternative, they are out there. Do you want your 15 yr old daughter coming home with a "belly" courtesy of d'Jwan? Or a call at your place of work from the school saying your son has been sent to the hospital ER because he was involved in a "misunderstanding" with five other students? Or maybe one will come home acting weird, because some school counselor has put it in their head that it is cool to be "gay questioning". This is the kind of shit that happens to children whose parents HAVE NO OTHER OPTION. Get off your ass and take some responsibility for your family, and stop leaving it up to the evil "educators" to raise your children. One day they will hate you for what you didn't do. BOTHER TO TAKE THE TIME.

Next time there's a board meeting the parents should bring a black woman who is concerned about her kids curriculum. When this bitch tells her to talk about issues not people, just stand back and let her go black as an ex gf used to say and watch that bitch cowar in fear because any criticism would be labeled raycisss!

I would meet that bitch outside with all of the other parents and their kids and made sure those kids knew who was screwing them over and disgrace that cunt every fucking day until she capitulates.

i'm really sort of sick of Americans being so ill informed of what communism is.  I get it - you hate statism and centralized control - so do I, but I believe in syndicalism.  Imagine, for a moment, when we shake off the shackles of central government and are able to rule ourselves in autonomous units.  I would like my unit to have shared principles and values, as well as a group work ethic.  This unit could be my family or a grouping of families.  Obviously, I have no desire to push this on anyone else, but if some of the other groups start to conglomerate and oligopolize or monopolize the market, we communists will fight them.  Teacher and public schools don't know shit about communism - this is just "liberal" shit, and not in the classic liberal sense - in the neo liberal nanny-state "help" everyone because they don't know better, don't let them sink or swim on their own, state.  I know comments like this don't ring with most people becuase they think Obama is a commie and the dems are commies.  They're about as communist as state-run centralized capitalism of the USSR in its last years.  Some of us communists are people who want to overrun the elite with you - and instead of simply referring to the great founding fathers of the US as our inspiration, we have many more years of recent struggle against elite and central powers, so think about it and give us a break before labeling all commies as Obama.  I don't even vote because I know those parties are a joke.

Leftist? Wealth-distributive? Collectivist?

No. Fascist, yes. USA is a textbook (not your textbooks apparently) example of fascism. The merging of state and corporate power. All politics in US is serving the interest of the 0,01 % and their servants (the Government fitting in this category). That has nothing to do with ‘leftist’, ‘communist’, ‘socialist’ or ‘collectivist’ – it’s (as pure as it gets) fascism.

im in my mid 20s and remember thinking alot of the stuff i was being taught was communist BS

they're just getting more aggressive with the dumbing down of society since they know most Americans are too stupid to realize or even care in the first place.

This type of thing furth destroys the family unit since schools these days are pretty much run like zoos. If you live in a middle class or poorer area your kds are at risk of getting injured at school bcause so many kid are violent or come from fucked up families. The curriculum is a joke and useless...

Think about how many teachers get caught sleeping with their students....these teachers aren't like the ones from the 60s and 70s..these people are the bottom of the barrel as far as where they graduated in college.

Complete fucking losers

This whole system is fucked and in 10 years these people will be full on statists unless things change for the better..which isnt likely happening unfortunately.

Im going to start seriously considering leaving this country for good and try to strike out somewhere else. This type of shit is WORSE than a terror attack in some ways, well it IS a terror attack.

I was fortunate to have one great P.E. teacher in middle skool. Man was 55 when I came through - he could do perfect pull-ups nonstop and was one of the best kids track coaches ever. I nearly broke 5 in the 8th grade training under him. He retired the year after my class passed. Back in the 70s, when they still whacked you, some kid flipped him off and he chased him down the track and whacked him into shape with a paddle.

You are right about the modern teachers. The last wave of the old timers has already stepped out. They all left mid 2000s.

Who educates you is not as important as learning critical analysis.  When the kids came home from school, I said, 'what did you learn today'?  Sometimes it was okay and factual; othertimes not so much.  It was important that i show them the truth, but at the same time to spit back whatever was fed them for testing purposes.  At a certain point though, they had enough ammunition to challenge what they were being taught.  Maybe the curriculum didn't change, but a lot of teachers had their wakeup call by doing that.

Sorry, I don't buy that for one minute. We spend thousands every year sending our three to a private Christian school. Now before anyone down votes me for either being a professed Christian or sending kids to a Chrisitian school, keep in mind that these two schools give the parents MUCH more control over what material is allowed to be taught, and are even expected to be involved in such. I can't tell you how many times I have heard some local college profs tell me, or have heard second hand how much better prepared the HS age kids are as a freshman as compared to the public school kids, as a general rule.....this does not mean all the public school kids are drooling idiots. You can even tell this on people as adults when you live in a smaller community with both schools. Adults that have gone thru the private schools tend to be better versed in many areas, are more fluent public speakers and just get along better with others as a general rule. I see it every day.

To be sure, there are some things that more closely mirror what the public schools teach but that is where the teacher has the right and obligation to step in and inform the kids about what really is the truth, and those teachers are held to account very closely by us as parents. I have NOTHING against home schooling and have some friends that do homeschool.

No, I was not held at gunpoint to send our kids there and yes it's one heck of a bit of money each year, but if I have been given the responsibility of raising these young and impressionable minds and choose not to home school then they deserve something better than the slop that passes for public education. We have excellent public schools here in my area, but at the end of the day they are still public school. They are light years better than what you would find in many other locales but they are still public schools.

I am not one of those that will stand on a soap box preaching the virtues of Xtian school ONLY, but don't for one minute think that because I don't home school that makes me any more of a serf or accessory to a crime. You've missed the mark with that comment.

Teachers Unions are sitting on hundreds of billions of retirement funds - protected as much as banks in 2008 if you remember - because all that cash is sacred to Dem politicians who have shovelled money by the trillions of dollars back into the Public Fools System in order to deeducate children to the point of never wanting to be outside the nurture of government - for.the rest of.their sad lives. China spends about $500 per child per year and we.can easily spend $15000 per year. Good teachers should have risen up years ago and shouted bloody murder because of the failng system.

Right, they are sitting on those billions because it's their fucking money. Contrary to what your radio has told you, almost all public employees, teachers in particular, will invest $100,000- $130,000 per person into that public pension system.

The other stupid thing you said was the bullshit about a failing system. The United States has one of the best public school systems in the world. Some states like Massachusetts, North Carolina and Florida have their public schools measuring equal to or better than any other system in the world, including those Asian countries who do things to their children we would deem abusive. Now, I bet you radio didn't tell you any of that. I know it didn't tell you that according to PIRLS, US. students are in the top 5 in a Reading or TIMSS has our students scoring equal with Finnish students in Math.

Acctg101,

My, you're such a tough guy, resorting to naughty words when facts don't exist to support your position.

You're links were to pure government funded propaganda, professional edjookaters self-promoting, patting their own backs, and similar to what the BLS serves up.

In case you're not familiar with the concept of an encyclopedia, it merely collects and makes available data from other sources, in this case one of your approved measuring sticks....

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in member and non-member nations of 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. It was first performed in 2000 and then repeated every three years. It is done with a view to improving education policies and outcomes.

470,000 15-year-old students representing 65 nations and territories participated in PISA 2009. An additional 50,000 students representing nine nations were tested in 2010.

Your public edjookashun is showing again. Aside from being a goobermint accountant I'll venture you're an accountant for a publick skool bored.

AND I have to work the FULL year AND do not get MLK day off AND do not get paid WORKDAYS where I don't have to work.

AND we all know how great government entities are at 'modifying' numbers,,, the BLS for example.

The constitution guarantees ALL freedom of religion. Whether you agree or disagree you have no right to disparage someone's belief. It is their constitutional and natural right. Some here treat the constitution and natural rights, which the Constitution and Declaration was framed by, as a salad bar where you can pick and choose which natural right you agree with and which ones you can discard regardless of the opinions of others. Believe it or not,,, natural rights and opinions are different.

If you agree with the constitution and the freedoms it attempts to preserve you would not disparage the rights and privileges of others so easily,,, for doing so opens up 'your' rights and privileges to debate.

Respect your fellow mans belief and he will respect yours....

The wife is a high school teacher in the ghetto. Came home yesterday confirming my understanding of what it means to import third world hill people. We've got TB at the school.

She grew up in an atheist household that went to Christmas mass. Government knows best democrats. Late in life Unitarians. Her mom bristles when anyone says " have a blessed day" or calls the Unitarian church a church. My wife couldn't stand me  talking about history or political/economic dynamics because I contradicted her fragile world view. Then she saw it all first hand with $70k a year janitors in a school with 80% free and reduced lunch kids. Saw it in fellow teachers and the union.

So out of the blue she says, "When we have kids, I want to home school them."

That's what teaching taught her.

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

Three fourth's of the states must ratify any amendment, whether PROPOSED by Congress or a Constitutional Convention.  Therefore, there is only one way to change the Constitution.

Article 5 is pretty simple. Either the 2/3 of the Federalie govt or 2/3 the States can recommend amendments which both have to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. This has already been abused by the ratification of the 16th and 17th without the proper numbers of ratifying states and the 14th which was forced upon the South at the end of the unCivil War "before" they would be allowed officially back in the union with voting privileges.

The fact they allowed any structural changes to the form and make up of this government is amazing to me. IMO it could be amended to be discarded. The founders really f*cked up when they considered their progeny would be as staunch defenders of freedom as they were. They had no idea what mealy mouthed dependency seeking blathering dumbed down idiotic whores their offspring would turn out to be.
