Iran Televises Major Naval Drill Against Fake US Aircraft Carrier In Persian Gulf
Amid the to-ing and fro-ing of John Kerry and the nuclear program negotiations, it seemed quite ironic that Iran would unleash a major naval drill near the strategically vital entrance of the Persian Gulf. As AP reports, more than a dozen swarming Iranian speedboats assaulted a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier, as the Guard's navy chief, Adm. Ali Fadavi, who last month boasted that his force is capable of sinking American aircraft carriers in the event of war, said on state television, "American aircraft carriers are very big ammunition depots housing a lot of missiles, rockets, torpedoes and everything else."
Caught on tape...
As AP reports, with rockets roaring and guns blazing, more than a dozen swarming Iranian speedboats assaulted a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier Wednesday during large-scale naval drills near the strategically vital entrance of the Persian Gulf.
The nationally televised show of force by the country's elite Revolutionary Guard comes just weeks ahead of a deadline for Iran and world powers to forge a historic deal on the fate of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
Iranian live-fire war games are not uncommon. But by simulating for the first time an attack on the ultimate symbol of American naval power, hard-liners hoped to send a message that Iran has no intention of backing down to the U.S. — whichever way talks over its contested nuclear program go.
"American aircraft carriers are very big ammunition depots housing a lot of missiles, rockets, torpedoes and everything else," the Guard's navy chief, Adm. Ali Fadavi, said on state television. A direct hit by a missile could set off a large secondary explosion, he added.
Fadavi last month boasted that his force is capable of sinking American aircraft carriers in the event of war. He previously called carriers easy targets and said Iran naturally wants to sink them.
The drill, named "Great Prophet 9," was held near the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes. Iran's regular army carried out naval drills near the strait in December.
...
State TV showed footage of missiles fired from the coast and the fast boats striking the ersatz American carrier, which appeared to be a replica seen in a shipyard in the southern port of Bandar Abbas last year. The drills also included Guard forces shooting down a drone and planting undersea mines.
...
The Guard's chief commander, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the drills send a "message of (Iran's) might" to "extraterritorial powers," a reference to the United States.
The US response was measured and appropriate...
Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, the spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the Americans were monitoring the drills, which had no effect on maritime traffic. He downplayed the simulated attack on the carrier, saying the U.S. military was "not concerned about this exercise."
"We're quite confident of our naval forces' ability to defend themselves," he said. "It seems they've attempted to destroy the equivalent of a Hollywood movie set."

How many fake carriers do the Iranians anticipate fighting in their next real engagement?
Well given that the F-35 is a 'fake stealth' plane then how many carriers does the USA have in its arsenal lol should be your number...
They hate us for our Happy Meals.
(Who can blame them?)
Carrier will not get that close in a real war scenario. 100 miles off shore. Great propaganda though.
Commander Stephens is probably right here... "Nothing to worry about"
Unless of course the Russians have equipped them with their new defence jamming device that rendered the USS Cook defenceless. But what is the chance that that Hitler guy would do something like that?
http://www.voltairenet.org/article185860.html
30 sec of phalanx fire should take care of that somali pirate attack.
We're in some kind of nuclear negotiations with Iran right now, are we not? They must be laughing their asses off at us. Can't believe their good fortune with Obama and Kerry.
This is just one group of a region's parasites puffing it's chest out against another group of another region's parasites.
Nothing to see here.
Maybe the carrier will get a sunburn
Oh, very crafty. Very crafty.
The carrier would need sunblock rated at SPF Mach 3
What sunblock ?
For all of yuo down arrow fucking idiots.
THAT ATTACK IS NOTHING COMPARED TO JAPANESE AIR ATTACKS AGAINST MUCH SMALLER AND LESS ARMORED US CARRIERS IN WWII
THE JAP PLANES WERE A LOT FASTER THAN THOSE SPEED BOATS AND FLEW IN THREE DINESIONS VERSUS JUST TWO ON THE WATER.
AND THEY STILL DIDN'T SINK THEM!
DUHHHHHH!!!
The carrier shown was made of depleted uranium ,current spent waste from Iranian reactors.
Shoulda held up better.
You are telling me that something that big wasn't already spotted and targeted?
Maybe the USN should do the follow up, you know, comparitive weapons effectiveness.
If that's the way they are planning to sink a carrier group, Israel may as well begin the tactical bombing right now.
This looks like classic Orwellian propaganda via '1984', shown to the Iranian people in order to try to boost confidence.
In reality, these little speedboats would have been intercepted and dispatched AT LEAST 50 miles from their intended target (at least in the open ocean). U.S. carriers are dispatched in 'task forces', which include lots of other 'surface vessels', and their complement of aircraft by itself is quite enough to repel this little 'Chris Craft' fleet. I don't know WTF the iranian 'commanders' were thinking when they built a cardboard aircraft carrier with a stick-figure 'island' on the deck... it reminds me of the movie 'The Final Countdown'.
'Splash the zeroes.'

I just pray that things don't go too far.
You mean to say it's unpossible to take out a modern U.S. Naval carrier with nerf missiles....?!
OF COURSE!
Without a combined strike with Mattel Vertibird helicopters, Mattel Nerf missiles would be ineffective!
https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=AwrTccpvn.5Uch8Acm0nnIlQ;...
The 'VertiBird' electric copter comes with 'space capsule', 'landing pad', 'lifecraft', and 'astronaut'.
FROM MATTEL.

fucked up der pentagram yes sir....
http://www.rense.com/general64/fore.htm
The speedboats are just the distraction. That is the whole intent of 100 go fast vessels swarming in all directions. In this drill, they all came from the same direction, which is not what the Iranians usually train to do. The real attack comes from land based sunburn, and silkworm missiles. The estimation I could find from the 2005 wargames is 24 silkworm launched at .5 second interval would overwhelm carrier defense counter measures. Only way to protect the carriers is the full battlegroup around them. That is not always the case.
How to spread apart a battlegroup? Easy. 200-300 gofast swarming the fleet from all directions. It's cheap, and eventually the surface ships would have to protect themselves instead of the carrier. hence the gofast/landbased missile dchotomy. Iran knows they have the resources to achieve this, and the United States Navy are well aware they can achieve this.
I remember transiting the Straits of Hormuzin the late 90's and seeing all the land based missiles on both sides of the straits. And those were only the ones we could see. It is no suprise most tankers transiting the straits do so at Max speed, an atgreat cost t the ship owner.
Edit: corrected spelling mistakes from sticky keyboard. (Note to self, no more chinese food at my desk).
Speed boat attack would be combined with missle attack and drones. Overwhelm Phalanx system and deplete ammo. What about topoedo ? Mine's ?
Not a US Navy fanboy, but that's not gonna work. A cursory search of youtube or wikipedia will show you many naval guns are automatically controlled, fire over 5000 rounds per minute, and can track 32 or 64 targets at a time.
What it claims and what it can actually do is still a question ? Carrier has been obsolete for a long time but defense contractors depend on the Carrier Group for money.
The primary defense weapon against a small boat attack on big deck ships is the CIWS Phalanx. They hold 1500 rounds. They do not reload quickly. What happens after they are tapped out? The human fired 25mm and .50 cals going to take em out?
A carrier is not going to be wandering around "unattended" sending out selfies with blonde chicks. All the shit in its path will be destroyed in place, its like a 600 mile circle of death.
Unless of course, Commander Obama is at the helm.
In that case he would send his escort ships off on shore leave with the sailors giving out fliers exclaiming the virtues of prayer rugs bought at Walmart 50% off and run the carrier aground as a goodwill gesture ;-)
you had better hope the mullars have not got a Lieutenant General Paul K. Van Riper
you talmudic cock sucker : )
Last I saw at the end of that video the ship was still afloat. Not even listing to one side.
Not bad for a plywood, particle board and used packing carton mock-up
RAISE THE TITANIC!
(Clive Cussler)
Yeah, the audience for this attack-on-cardboard is the towel heads themselves.
Of course, if by some Islamic 'miracle' they were actually able to inflict damage on a carrier, it would be a real hoot, wouldn't it?
I'd say Obola better damn well hope that the politically correct pusillanimus weaklings he's put in command positions throughout the military will know their jobs, stay alert, not get over-confident and not fall asleep at the wheel.....
Bingo
Mullahs playing to the mostly illiterate country folks aka their base
City dwelling white true Persians (Zoroastrian by true faith) must be getting tired of the interlopers from across the Gulf that have taken over their country and culture and even their name

The problem is the Phalanx fires at 4500 Rounds/Min and has 1500 rounds in the system.
That gives 20 seconds of fire capacity.
30 seconds? You would be out of ammunition.
Ponga Navy - attack!
You sunk my battle ship!
FYI, Payne:
We've been sending Carriers through these "Dire Straits" for some time now. You're either not familiar with the Region, or you're thinking about some type of "moderated escalations" where we can station our Forces in an optimized fashion well in advance of the Beginning of any Armed Conflict.
If IRN plans on doing anything against any Navy, they'll wait until the meat of the Convoy is going though the Straits.
Remember, there are all kinds of Vessels sailing through there 24/7 - adding to the confusion.
http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/asia/ir.htm
BTW, they've relatively expensive SSMs and Longer Range Torpedos in stock.
The US had a 3 carrer fleet package in the Persian Gulf with support ships, that could total over 100 ships. Shooting fish in a barrel comes to mind.
Given that the Iranians have a base on Abu Musa and which creates a corridor less than 50 km wide for the carrier to travel through when entering the gulf.
Fundamentally, large standoff distances and the Persian Gulf are simply not compatible. Iran is not Libya.
And 'Happy' song.
(I can't blame them)
Major General Allah Bin Ren and Mullah Osama Bin Stimpy seem to have collaborated on this 'press release'.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfNajFYPljQ
They plan on sinking lots of them. China & Russia will be covertly aiding them, or did you forget that?
Lol give it five years. If he makes it that far I bet Netanyahu will use this video as a false flag to justify attacking Iran.
hahahahahahahahah durka
hahahahahahahahah durka
One. The USS John Kohn Kerry
I just snorted and farted at the same time.....not to mention the support group that accompanies a carrier. Oh and our boys shoot back...or first. 210, 220 whatever it takes....
depends.
Surprise is a great advantage, and if a number of small boats are at sea, fishing and cast off their gear
and head straight in. It's a pretty crowded environment. Pick your timing so the channel is crowded with tankers... At least during the Millenium Challenge game
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002
a small boat force with missile support in the excercise sank 16 major ships...
Once the golfer in chief is done modernizing the US military they will be as good as fake ships.
Well, if I wanted to confuse my opponets, this is exactly what I would do. Have them underestimate me because of this....then have me some S-400s and DF-21s ready to rock and roll. Just in case there was someon wanting to 'invade' my sovereign territory.
In a 2002 war game designed to test out the new network-centic strategy of the US Navy the Red forces (modelled on a country like Iran) destroyed a large chunk of the Blue fleet (modelled on the US fleet) including a carrier.
Instead of going back to the drawing board they "re-floated" the sunken Blue ships and made Red follow a script which would result in a Blue victory. The commander of Red (a retired Marine Force Lt. General) quit in disgust.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002
Van Riper is critical of the current transformation efforts in the military, especially changes originating from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. He gained notoriety after the Millennium Challenge 2002 wargame. He played the Red Team opposing force commander, and easily sunk a whole carrier battle group in the simulation with an inferior Middle-Eastern "red" team in the first two days.
To do this, Van Riper adopted an asymmetric strategy. In particular, he used old methods to evade his opponent's sophisticated electronic surveillance network. Van Riper used motorcycle messengers to transmit orders to front-line troops and World War II light signals to launch airplanes without radio communications. Van Riper used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of the opponent's fleet by the second day of the exercise. In a preemptive strike, he launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that overwhelmed the Blue forces' electronic sensors and destroyed sixteen warships. This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of the opposing navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.
After the simulation was restarted with different parameters, he claimed that the wargame had been fixed to falsely validate the current doctrine of the U.S. Navy. He is also critical of post-war Iraq plans and implementation. On April 24, 2006, he joined several other retired generals in calling for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Swift Boat Kerry to the rescue!
How dare you even suggest that Kerry would sail into a hot battle zone, afterall the Iranians may have heard of the 'ol double-tap tactic.
Two Purple Hearts ,Baby. Two!
Fifty yards into the future:
Sasha, Meliah, and Chelsea are joined by the dyke daughter of the woman who could see Russia from her house, in christening the newest, greenest, ecofriendly, and most modern aluminum-built carrier ever to sail the Seven Seas, the U.S.S.S. 'Songbird' (in memory of Kohn Kerry's mentor, Johnny-boi McCain).
Can I get some war glorification up in here!?!?
Swarming speedboats with multiple missiles and torpedos, fired rapidly, is definitely the way to go. It's how North Korea practices. Gotta' overwhelm the capacity of the defenses to hit incoming targets.
Yup. That's what the war games have concluded.
But first you have to bring the carrier unsupported, into an over sized lake. Not that Barry wouldn't...
Distractions while the current gen soviet sourced cruise missles hit home. The US Navy conducted a war games scenario against Iran a while back. They cut the game short - the US got its ass kicked. Carriers ARE nice big targets. Were so even back at their peak in WWII.
Source URLs pls. Thanks
Oh, the fantasies so many on ZH want to believe.
If speedboats can take out the US Navy then why has it not happened already? Why did Iraq not just buy some speedboats and sink the ships. Why did Libya not do so? There are suicide bombers in the ME who are devoted and brave. If this worked you know that a group of them would have done it already.
Are they serious or were they bored and just joking around? Punking the MSM to see if they would actually declare this a threat? An excuse to play with their toys and have a party afterwards. They just cannot be serious. If this was serious if must reflect all their defense expertise.
It is just too goofy not to be satire. Please tell me they are just goofing. Please.
Allah, they are going to die really fast. They are mental. Some sort of secret weapon has screwed up their brains. Holy S..! Did National Lampoon do this video? I looked for Chevy Chase, did not see him. Must be National Lampoon, I'll drink a beer and watch again. Maybe this is a new inventive way to prime the public for announcing the release of a new movie of theirs. Bet it is going to be good, who are the new stars?
Somehow 'elite revolutionary guard' just doesn't cut for me lol. If they have Russias backup then they have a chance. By themselves? LMAO they'll find out speed boats are still recreational vehicles. And good for target practice. Not a chance in hell sorry.
Not to rain on Iran's parade, but isn't "a dozen swarming speedboats" going up against a U.S. carrier a bit like a dozen mosquitos buzzing a person's head?
Yeah, one or two of 'em may land and bite, but ultimately they'll all just get swatted to death.
And I killed a platoon of cardboard zombies today. I'm sure I can take on just about anything now......
LMAO, this should have been a "Caption Contest" article
Go get 'em Captain Saeed! With your 20' 3 person 75hp mercury. LMAO.
Actually.......we need a new tv reality show. It would be like MMA but be military against military. They'll sign papers beforehand promising they won't start war over it.
Ooohh. That was some seriously scary attack right there. They really mean't business! Eight speedboats attacking an aircraft carrier. Right.
I'm no military ace but ...
Ooohh. That was some seriously scary attack right there. They really mean't business! Eight speedboats attacking an aircraft carrier. Right.
I'm no military ace but ...
This must have been Iran's version of a "false flag event"
My bad double post.
What aircraft carrier was that, the USS Obama?
HMS StanleytheSlut -
aka ObamaMomma
Its called a long distance bitch slap to a kenyan..go figure
Brian Williams was on the lead speedboat....
humor, i recognize that
Naw,
he was water skiing behind it shooting selfies.
This is just a dogs and poney show... When the real thing happens, no high speed boat no nothing, just a good Russian Missile flying at whatever crazy speed... Something like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p191AfrvRMI at 20 seconds... Done.
Now that take down of a mock carrier was way more impressive.
If only the Iranians had jobs they wouldn't feel so compelled to do things like this.
...and one of those missles almost hit Brian Williams
Well, you know their buddies the Chinese, do have aircraft carrier destruction capability.
Who knows, if we piss of China enough with our money games, it may happen.
Here, look, it is on a USNI web site
http://www.usni.org/news-and-features/chinese-kill-weapon
to bad their speedboats can't have bikini clad babes in them, to distract the aircraft carrier.
The carrier itself? is that what they mean by smart carrier? wow my minds almost blown.
Could've sworn I ordered a cab, but sure tastes like a fucking merlot.
I've had more action in my bathtub when I was 5!
Seriously I feel sry for these folks when their democratized and freedoomed
As much as I hate to give the Iranians any credit, they are correct: US aircraft carriers are sitting ducks.
A diesel Chinese submarine surfaced next to one of our aircraft carriers during a naval exercise near Japan.
Sorry to say it too but the F35 is a turkey.
I've always admired and respected our Navy and Air Force but they are living in the past.
Manned fighters are obsolete. For a well designed UAV it'd be like shooting fish in a barrel.
Can we handle the truth?
I had the same opinion, but a Navy Chief explained to me that a carrier is simply a portable air field, that can project power almost anywhere in the world.
Maybe someday. But we're not there yet.
Don't believe everything you read in the New York Times.
Destroy one and there could be a nuclear war...
So did an old Australian Oberon class at a Pacific rim exercise many years ago off Hawaii
What a joke. These people sit on a sea of money but they adopted a 7th century pedophile's death cult. Persia could have been more prosperous, educated, and industrius than most nations on the planet, but they chose idiotic mohammedianism...
Do you know any Iranians? I do. They are doctors and engineers and highly intelligent. US supremacism will be its undoing.
yes, there are many well educated Iranians.
unfortunately their country is in the hands of Isalmic Imam's who want to destroy various unislamic countries.
Don't fuck with the Persians
Yeah and they have morality police that whip you for showing your ankles. Islam is stupidity spread by force. All the Persians I have known hated jews and were extremely materialistic.
bumbu sauce your avatar is of a dead english actor who raped boys was out of control and had to be tavistocked at various south london mental hospitals for reprogramming.
so he could finish off his grenada tv contract.
later mossad aman suicided
your hero was a child rapist nice choice what was your point about iran again holmes?
Looking forward to the day when the inferiorists are in charge.
Oh, wait! It's already happened.
Yeah, come on, that is some pretty stupid shit! One 20mm vulcan from on board a support ship or the carrier would destroy all those bayliners, rather quickly. The whole world is batshit crazy!
Millennium Challenge 2002Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that destroyed sixteen warships while the JSAF simulator operators sat and watched without responding defensively or offensively . This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of Blue's navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.[1] Again it should be noted, the JSAF simulation did not at that time have the suicide behaviors modeled nor the damage models of interactions of a small boat impacting a ship
The purpose of this exercise was not to show how Iran would sink carriers, it was to mislead. They have other methods which will likely succeed.
Looks very Kim Jung Un-ish to me.
I do not pretend to be an expert, but this is probably supposed to look as weak as it is. But several years ago when things were much hotter in this department the Iran military showed a three component missle battery that fired all three missles at once. They climbed up relatively high then made a "right turn Clyde" down straight over the carrier. And what defense does a carrier have from missles coming in from the tip top??? They also have silkworms and another Chinese super high speed anti ship missle, and some of their own as well. These anti ship missles come in below the "curtian of lead" defense.
It doesn't mean they will win, but probably will make some what of a mess. Who knows. Go long scrap ships???

This looks like a Brian Williams production to me.........
That was the saddest navy drill i've ever seen.
Dont worry too much my American friends...I'm from Sparta. We fought the Persian successfully many times in the past, before your time in Middle Earth.
Only problem is we (The Greeks) love our Iranian friends too so it will be hard to take sides for us.
Yes Spiro - your current leaders are an inspiration to us all Their bravery in the face of the Troika is an inspiration that will carry down the ages like the Spartans. I will try rehab and get back to you. Over and out.
Now, now Ghost...you dont have to rub it in..this is not about leaders anyway...and for your information Im in the process of throwing all my leaders of the past 40 years in jail or the rubbish bin of history...what are yu doing about yours? Still voting for them. Over and Out.
What a joke!
Shooting up a balsa wood aircraft carrier and putting it on the news like they are badasses............
If your so good iran, why don't you pick on a real one?
lol
It is an accidental admission that the mouthbreathers that populate that garbage heap buy this quality of tripe hook, line, and sinker.
bare bum sauce
i wish watson would give you a taste of your own ass rape medicine holmes.
get back to the maudsley you freak you are a danger to the childrens
Don't trip on your nightshirt mohamet lover.
bumbuhasbara sauce quite nice profile picture you have .
I looked at the video closely, but I didn't see the part about E-2C radar planes picking up the speedboats from 250 miles away, electronically suppressing the field of battle with EA-6B electronic warfare aircraft, vectoring in FA-18 Superhornets, and putting rockets and 20 mm shells through the bottoms of the water ski boats.
Except for that, it was a pretty accurate video.
It was influenced by the Israeli attack and near sinking of the USS Liberty. Of course, that was in 1967 and the weapons are more accurate today.
They'll prolly go after one of our warships the way Bogart and Hepburn did in 'African Queen'.
The persian gulf is only 50km wide at some points, shit for brains. We have had up to 3 carrier groups there at once. Ships in a bottle.
.
Showoffs!
It's like no-one who comments here has read Art of War: "Pretend to be weak, that [your enemy] may grow arrogant." Like the Iranian "stealth" fighter, these "publicly televised" exercises are more propaganda for us (westerners) than for their own citizens.
This is true also of the "crazy, religiously intollerant immams". Iran is one of the last bastions (now Egypt, Libia and Syria have all been turned over to Wahhabists) of mutli-faith democracy in the middle east. Islam, Zoroastranism (the oldest monotheistic religion) and Christianity all peacefully coexist in the most stable, peaceful democracy in the region. And this is true despite the UK/USA's best efforts to destroy them in the 70s.
And it is devoid of sodomites! At least according to Wackaminojad.
If by "sodomite" you mean Zionists then yes, it is devoid of them.
Sodomites the new modern family
Not limited to Zion or Islam
Can beastiality be far behind?
Soon it will be all swept away.
but
and most of us along with it.
How's that ark you're building coming along?
He lives.
Who is the european looking salesman watching the proceedings?
Was that a joke? It took a while to put a hole in that fake carrier.
Even the Russians would be laughing at the Iranians.
What's with the speedboats? I get it, no bigger ships. This looks like a video for the onion.
Why not an Israeli ship?
The only thing I would say against exercises like this is that... there is an entire fleet around that carrier. Not like it is going to go floating along by itself.
This could be a setup. Making it appear they are buffoons.
It is all irrelevant for both sides when missiles with nukes makes an entrance.
or P-800 Oniks, they have offered the upgraded S300s now and I presume all restraint is off going forward, Iran can get its hands on anything Russia or China produces
Laugh all you want about the naval strike capabilities of a nation like Iran.
Until you cry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA-111_Shkval
A dozen rag speedboats would vaporize into pink mist by our automated close-aboard weapon systems.
Those rag Starburst uber-Mach shipkilling missiles... well, that's another story.
An aircraft carrier is powered by 2 (two) nuclear reactors. Personally, I am against putting nuclear reactors in anything people shoot at.
Why speed boats when you could launch multiple torpedoes, why a slow ass missile when you could use a laser guided bomb from above.
It would appear to be the low tech amateur hour.
Plus I doubt they could get that close to an aircraft carrier, it's not like they anchor up right outside the harbour when in combat.
The real targets here, I believe, are the Iranians eyes, minds and hearts. It may simply be their own version of hollywwod war propaganda. Afetr all, didnt the American Admiral zeroed in the matter, refering to hollywood scenery ? He certainly knows about the art.....
Of course the Iranian demo is just a show and far from reality in a real battle with an aircraft carrier group, however...
Large vessels are obsolete now in the face of peak technology warfare, as subsurface drones and supersonic cruise and quasi-ballistic hypersonic missiles are in service today and can carrying 100kt nukes.
A subsurface drone only needs to place itself within a few hundred meters of a large vessel or beneath a carrier group and detonate on the seafloor. This would create a shock wave travelling at 1.5km/s which would be enough the shake the contents of these vessels to pieces and create a tsunami that would literally lift the vessels into the air and turn most of them over. I think this is a tame description of what it would be like.
A quasi-balistic missiles can approach the carrier group in the last few seconds, vertically downwards from high altitude at 6km/s, taking an evasive path, to frustrate anti-missile systems and an airburst 1 to 3km above, of 6 times Hiroshima, would be sayonara for the carrier group.
Supersonic cruise missiles are able to take highly evasive paths to frustrate anti-missile systems and again only have to get in close. Hitting such a missile would set off the nuke trigger, within 1km to 3km of the carrier group, and would again cause great damage and a large shock wave, unless the missile can get closer in for more fun and games.
Only one nuke within range (1 to 3km) is enough, at the very least, to disable effective combat operations for the carrier group.
This is what I read online, so I guess things are even worse in reality.
One single nuke gets fired = end game for Iran (and maybe for the rest of the world). Everyone realizes that, of course, this does mean that each of the 33 million Iranian males will get 72 virgins in the afterlife. This concept might be a worrying one.
i'm no military expert, but i dont think this is necessarily impossible if the Iranian get a little help from a Russian fairy.
So again, the question asks itself, was it really necessary for the US to play cowbow with the Russians on Ukraine, when it is of little importance to the US but of strategic importance to Russia?
Just 2 AC-130's rotating on station could eliminate the majority of the Mohamet Republic of Iran's "Navy."
speedboat vs. railgun
railgun wins
Those Iranian guys are pretty scary - swarming around and firing at an enormous floating unmanned hulk that can't shoot back. Oooo, just gives me the shivers.
Reminds me of when we were kids. Bunch of 8 - 10 year olds would vandalize a construction site after hours. Yeah, we sure showed them. That's when men were men, and bo- er, never mind.
This while Kerry is begging, kissing arse, and giving bj's to get a worthless treaty with Iran.
The Iranians DID hang 0baMao if effigy, so they're not ALL bad, I guess.
Did they televise Iran being turned into glass if they hit a US warship.
You'd have to be a completer moron to think that the USN hasn't been wargaming this scenario and ones like It for decades.
Fucking turkey shoot of epic proportions.
Seriously, some of you paid Russian trolls need to get a fucking grip.
Abu Musa would be a radioactive pool of molten glass if a US carrier was sunk in the PG.
*Yawn*
During the Gulf war Saddam had lots and lots of pick-up trucks with mounted armaments and the concept was to swarm... The Abrams tanks simply shot them down, far out of sight, using aircraft to spot the targets and send the data to the tanks; the munition shot by the tanks simply sought the target and I doubt a single Iraqi truck unit ever even had even a second to realize that they were doomed.
Swarming is not likely to work with motorboats. Shore mounted rockets maybe.
There are things protecting those carrier groups that we are not even privy too. Those Iranian speedboats would not be able to untie the deck lines from the dock before being vaporized.
Now, what the Russians and Chinese have hidden up their sleeves would probably be a more realistic threat. Carriers will eventually go the way of the battleship as drones and hypersonic aviation technologies will make them irrelevant whenever force can reliably be projected anywhere in the world from the middle of the US within 2 hours.
They are great for bullying 3rd rate powers though. I do pray for the safety of their crews though as things are getting more dangerous for them. A lot of good people bravely serve on them as it's dangerous work. My brother-in-law witnessed a guy get severed in half by a failed arresting cable. Then you've got maniacs like McCain firing missiles while on deck.
Word on the street is McMain was purposely backfiring his plane's engine leading to the Forrestal Disaster.
