Iran Televises Major Naval Drill Against Fake US Aircraft Carrier In Persian Gulf

Tyler Durden's picture

Amid the to-ing and fro-ing of John Kerry and the nuclear program negotiations, it seemed quite ironic that Iran would unleash a major naval drill near the strategically vital entrance of the Persian Gulf. As AP reports, more than a dozen swarming Iranian speedboats assaulted a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier, as the Guard's navy chief, Adm. Ali Fadavi, who last month boasted that his force is capable of sinking American aircraft carriers in the event of war, said on state television, "American aircraft carriers are very big ammunition depots housing a lot of missiles, rockets, torpedoes and everything else."

Caught on tape...

As AP reports, with rockets roaring and guns blazing, more than a dozen swarming Iranian speedboats assaulted a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier Wednesday during large-scale naval drills near the strategically vital entrance of the Persian Gulf.

The nationally televised show of force by the country's elite Revolutionary Guard comes just weeks ahead of a deadline for Iran and world powers to forge a historic deal on the fate of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Iranian live-fire war games are not uncommon. But by simulating for the first time an attack on the ultimate symbol of American naval power, hard-liners hoped to send a message that Iran has no intention of backing down to the U.S. — whichever way talks over its contested nuclear program go.

"American aircraft carriers are very big ammunition depots housing a lot of missiles, rockets, torpedoes and everything else," the Guard's navy chief, Adm. Ali Fadavi, said on state television. A direct hit by a missile could set off a large secondary explosion, he added.

Fadavi last month boasted that his force is capable of sinking American aircraft carriers in the event of war. He previously called carriers easy targets and said Iran naturally wants to sink them.

The drill, named "Great Prophet 9," was held near the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes. Iran's regular army carried out naval drills near the strait in December.

...

State TV showed footage of missiles fired from the coast and the fast boats striking the ersatz American carrier, which appeared to be a replica seen in a shipyard in the southern port of Bandar Abbas last year. The drills also included Guard forces shooting down a drone and planting undersea mines.

...

The Guard's chief commander, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the drills send a "message of (Iran's) might" to "extraterritorial powers," a reference to the United States.

The US response was measured and appropriate...

Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, the spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the Americans were monitoring the drills, which had no effect on maritime traffic. He downplayed the simulated attack on the carrier, saying the U.S. military was "not concerned about this exercise."

"We're quite confident of our naval forces' ability to defend themselves," he said. "It seems they've attempted to destroy the equivalent of a Hollywood movie set."

This looks like classic Orwellian propaganda via '1984', shown to the Iranian people in order to try to boost confidence.

In reality, these little speedboats would have been intercepted and dispatched AT LEAST 50 miles from their intended target (at least in the open ocean). U.S. carriers are dispatched in 'task forces', which include lots of other 'surface vessels', and their complement of aircraft by itself is quite enough to repel this little 'Chris Craft' fleet. I don't know WTF the iranian 'commanders' were thinking when they built a cardboard aircraft carrier with a stick-figure 'island' on the deck... it reminds me of the movie 'The Final Countdown'.

'Splash the zeroes.'

During the summer of 2002, in the run-up to President Bush's invasion of Iraq, the US military staged the most elaborate and expensive war games ever conceived. Operation Millennium Challenge, as it was called, cost some $250 million, and required two years of planning. The mock war was not aimed at Iraq, at least, not overtly. But it was set in the Persian Gulf, and simulated a conflict with a hypothetical rogue state. The "war" involved heavy use of computers, and was also played out in the field by 13,500 US troops, at 17 different locations and 9 live-force training sites. All of the services participated under a single joint command, known as JOINTFOR. The US forces were designated as "Force Blue," and the enemy as OPFOR, or "Force Red." The "war" lasted three weeks and ended with

The speedboats are just the distraction. That is the whole intent of 100 go fast vessels swarming in all directions. In this drill, they all came from the same direction, which is not what the Iranians usually train to do. The real attack comes from land based sunburn, and silkworm missiles. The estimation I could find from the 2005 wargames is 24 silkworm launched at .5 second interval would overwhelm carrier defense counter measures. Only way to protect the carriers is the full battlegroup around them. That is not always the case.

How to spread apart a battlegroup? Easy. 200-300 gofast swarming the fleet from all directions. It's cheap, and eventually the surface ships would have to protect themselves instead of the carrier. hence the gofast/landbased missile dchotomy. Iran knows they have the resources to achieve this, and the United States Navy are well aware they can achieve this.

I remember transiting the Straits of Hormuzin the late 90's and seeing all the land based missiles on both sides of the straits. And those were only the ones we could see. It is no suprise most tankers transiting the straits do so at Max speed, an atgreat cost t the ship owner.

Edit: corrected spelling mistakes from sticky keyboard. (Note to self, no more chinese food at my desk).

We've been sending Carriers through these "Dire Straits" for some time now.  You're either not familiar with the Region, or you're thinking about some type of "moderated escalations" where we can station our Forces in an optimized fashion well in advance of the Beginning of any Armed Conflict.

If IRN plans on doing anything against any Navy, they'll wait until the meat of the Convoy is going though the Straits.

Remember, there are all kinds of Vessels sailing through there 24/7 - adding to the confusion.

In a 2002 war game designed to test out the new network-centic strategy of the US Navy the Red forces (modelled on a country like Iran) destroyed a large chunk of the Blue fleet (modelled on the US fleet) including a carrier.

Instead of going back to the drawing board they "re-floated" the sunken Blue ships and made Red follow a script which would result in a Blue victory. The commander of Red (a retired Marine Force Lt. General) quit in disgust.

Van Riper is critical of the current transformation efforts in the military, especially changes originating from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. He gained notoriety after the Millennium Challenge 2002 wargame. He played the Red Team opposing force commander, and easily sunk a whole carrier battle group in the simulation with an inferior Middle-Eastern "red" team in the first two days.

To do this, Van Riper adopted an asymmetric strategy. In particular, he used old methods to evade his opponent's sophisticated electronic surveillance network. Van Riper used motorcycle messengers to transmit orders to front-line troops and World War II light signals to launch airplanes without radio communications. Van Riper used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of the opponent's fleet by the second day of the exercise. In a preemptive strike, he launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that overwhelmed the Blue forces' electronic sensors and destroyed sixteen warships. This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of the opposing navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.

After the simulation was restarted with different parameters, he claimed that the wargame had been fixed to falsely validate the current doctrine of the U.S. Navy. He is also critical of post-war Iraq plans and implementation. On April 24, 2006, he joined several other retired generals in calling for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Oh, the fantasies so many on ZH want to believe.

If speedboats can take out the US Navy then why has it not happened already?  Why did Iraq not just buy some speedboats and sink the ships.  Why did Libya not do so?  There are suicide bombers in the ME who are devoted and brave.  If this worked you know that a group of them would have done it already.

Are they serious or were they bored and just joking around?  Punking the MSM to see if they would actually declare this a threat?  An excuse to play with their toys and have a party afterwards.  They just cannot be serious.  If this was serious if must reflect all their defense expertise.

As much as I hate to give the Iranians any credit, they are correct: US aircraft carriers are sitting ducks.

A diesel Chinese submarine surfaced next to one of our aircraft carriers during a naval exercise near Japan.

Sorry to say it too but the F35 is a turkey.

I've always admired and respected our Navy and Air Force but they are living in the past.

Manned fighters are obsolete. For a well designed UAV it'd be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Can we handle the truth?

I had the same opinion, but a Navy Chief explained to me that a carrier is simply a portable air field, that can project power almost anywhere in the world.

Millennium Challenge 2002

Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that destroyed sixteen warships while the JSAF simulator operators sat and watched without responding defensively or offensively . This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of Blue's navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.[1] Again it should be noted, the JSAF simulation did not at that time have the suicide behaviors modeled nor the damage models of interactions of a small boat impacting a ship

I do not pretend to be an expert, but this is probably supposed to look as weak as it is.   But  several years ago when things were much hotter in this department the Iran military showed a three component missle battery that fired all three missles at once.  They climbed up relatively high then made a "right turn Clyde" down straight over the carrier.  And what defense does a carrier have from missles coming in from the tip top???  They also have silkworms and another Chinese super high speed anti ship missle, and some of their own as well.  These anti ship missles come in below the "curtian of lead" defense.

It doesn't mean they will win, but probably will make some what of a mess.  Who knows.  Go long scrap ships???

It's like no-one who comments here has read Art of War: "Pretend to be weak, that [your enemy] may grow arrogant." Like the Iranian "stealth" fighter, these "publicly televised" exercises are more propaganda for us (westerners) than for their own citizens.

This is true also of the "crazy, religiously intollerant immams". Iran is one of the last bastions (now Egypt, Libia and Syria have all been turned over to Wahhabists) of mutli-faith democracy in the middle east. Islam, Zoroastranism (the oldest monotheistic religion) and Christianity all peacefully coexist in the most stable, peaceful democracy in the region. And this is true despite the UK/USA's best efforts to destroy them in the 70s.

Of course the Iranian demo is just a show and far from reality in a real battle with an aircraft carrier group, however...

Large vessels are obsolete now in the face of peak technology warfare, as subsurface drones and supersonic cruise and quasi-ballistic hypersonic missiles are in service today and can carrying 100kt nukes.

A subsurface drone only needs to place itself within a few hundred meters of a large vessel or beneath a carrier group and detonate on the seafloor. This would create a shock wave travelling at 1.5km/s which would be enough the shake the contents of these vessels to pieces and create a tsunami that would literally lift the vessels into the air and turn most of them over. I think this is a tame description of what it would be like.

A quasi-balistic missiles can approach the carrier group in the last few seconds, vertically downwards from high altitude at 6km/s, taking an evasive path, to frustrate anti-missile systems and an airburst 1 to 3km above, of 6 times Hiroshima, would be sayonara for the carrier group.

Supersonic cruise missiles are able to take highly evasive paths to frustrate anti-missile systems and again only have to get in close. Hitting such a missile would set off the nuke trigger, within 1km to 3km of the carrier group, and would again cause great damage and a large shock wave, unless the missile can get closer in for more fun and games.

Only one nuke within range (1 to 3km) is enough, at the very least, to disable effective combat operations for the carrier group.

This is what I read online, so I guess things are even worse in reality.

*Yawn*

During the Gulf war Saddam had lots and lots of pick-up trucks with mounted armaments and the concept was to swarm... The Abrams tanks simply shot them down, far out of sight, using aircraft to spot the targets and send the data to the tanks; the munition shot by the tanks simply sought the target and I doubt a single Iraqi truck unit ever even had even a second to realize that they were doomed.

Swarming is not likely to work with motorboats.  Shore mounted rockets maybe.

There are things protecting those carrier groups that we are not even privy too. Those Iranian speedboats would not be able to untie the deck lines from the dock before being vaporized.

Now, what the Russians and Chinese have hidden up their sleeves would probably be a more realistic threat. Carriers will eventually go the way of the battleship as drones and hypersonic aviation technologies will make them irrelevant whenever force can reliably be projected anywhere in the world from the middle of the US within 2 hours.

They are great for bullying 3rd rate powers though. I do pray for the safety of their crews though as things are getting more dangerous for them. A lot of good people bravely serve on them as it's dangerous work. My brother-in-law witnessed a guy get severed in half by a failed arresting cable. Then you've got maniacs like McCain firing missiles while on deck.
