China Just Sided With Russia Over The Ukraine Conflict

Tyler Durden's picture

When it comes to the Ukraine proxy war, which started in earnest just about one year ago with the violent coup that overthrew then president Yanukovich and replaced him with a local pro-US oligarch, there has been no ambiguity who the key actors were: on the left, we had the west, personified by the US, the European Union, and NATO in general; while on the right we had Russia. In fact, if there was any confusion, it was about the role of that other "elephant in the room" - China.

To be sure, a question few asked throughout the Ukraine civil war is just whose side is China leaning toward. After all the precarious balance of power between NATO and Russia had resulted in a stalemate in which neither side has an obvious advantage (even as the Ukraine economy died, and its currency hyperinflated, waiting for a clear winner), and the explicit or implicit support of China to either camp would make all the difference in the world, not to mention the world's most formidable axis.

Today we finally got the answer, and the winner is... this guy:

Xinhua reported that late on Thursday Qu Xing, China's ambassador to Belgium, was quoted as blaming competition between Russia and the West for the Ukraine crisis, urging Western powers to "abandon the zero-sum mentality" with Russia.

Cited by Reuters, Xing said that Western powers should take into consideration Russia's legitimate security concerns over Ukraine.

Reuters' assessment of Xing speech: "an unusually frank and open display of support for Moscow's position in the crisis."

At least it is not a warning to the US to back off or else. Yet.

Speaking in very clear and explicit language, something diplomats are not used to doing, the Chinese ambassador said the "nature and root cause" of the crisis was the "game" between Russia and Western powers, including the United States and the European Union.

He said external intervention by different powers accelerated the crisis and warned that Moscow would feel it was being treated unfairly if the West did not change its approach.

"The West should abandon the zero-sum mentality, and take the real security concerns of Russia into consideration," Qu was quoted as saying.

His comments were an unusually public show of understanding from China for the Russian position. China and Russia see eye-to-eye on many international diplomatic issues but Beijing has generally not been so willing to back Russia over Ukraine.

As noted above, China has long been very cautious not to be drawn into the struggle between Russia and the West over Ukraine's future, not wanting to alienate a key ally. And yet, something changed overnight, with this very clear language, warning some could say, that China will no longer tolerate Pax Americana, and even the mere assumption of a unipolar western world, let alone the reality.

Qu's comments take place just as talks between the United States and its European allies over harsher sanctions against Moscow.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western powers of trying to dominate and impose their ideology on the rest of world. The United States and European delegations slammed Moscow for supporting rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Qu said Washington's involvement in Ukraine could "become a distraction in its foreign policy".

And then, Qu's slap in the face of Obama: "The United States is unwilling to see its presence in any part of the world being weakened, but the fact is its resources are limited, and it will be to some extent hard work to sustain its influence in external affairs."

Especially if and when China decides to send a few peacekeepers of its own into Ukraine. You know - just to make sure US influence in external affairs isn't "sustained" too much.

Just wait--China has learned a lot from the west...Take f'r instance when the Dutch bought Manhattan for $24 bucks worth of trinkets and beads..
China may up the ante a little bit (since they already have more US Treasuries than they really want)  particularly when the get their Nicaragua canal finished....They will, following the Dutch example, barter for the rest of the US for a few more containerloads of "made in China" trinkets.
(Of course, China is now  probably only waiting until the US debt problem gets hyperinflated away to nothing).

Qu Xing, China's ambassador to Belgium says something not even that controversial and Reuters goes gaga, along with Tyler Durden.

Ambassadors do not make foreign policy and are absolute lightweights.

No, Ambassadors simply parrot what policy they are told to parrot. Foreign policy comes from HQ.

But I would believe what the Ambassador says.

And the point is?

The Ambassador, in this case, happens to be the Ambassador to Belgium.

The Headquarters of NATO and one of the Seats of the EU

Brussels hosts the official seats of the European CommissionCouncil of the European Union, and European Council, as well as a seat (officially the second seat but de facto the most important one) of the European Parliament.

So what he said was heard by every important government in Europe, especially the ones who have imposed sanctions on Russia since the spring.

Whether or not there has a been or will be a follow-up, secret notification by China, having to impose strict duties on all imports from the EU  countries who have imposed these sanctions on Russia, I can not say. .

It is certainly within China's rights to impose a duty on imports.

The imposition of such duties would unquestionably push the EU off the edge of the earth where there be the dragons of depression.

*sigh*

My post has clearly been interpreted to mean something else. I suppose it is my fault for not stating it clearly enough, so I will try again.

China has proven in many ways and previous statements that indeed, it sides with Russia on Ukraine; this is old news and not one just revealed by an inexperienced, first-time-ever-on-the-job ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium (regardless of the fact that EU HQ is in Brussels).

------------------

For comparison, how much weight do you give to what Denise Bauer has to say about anything?

After all, "The Headquarters of NATO and one of the Seats of the EU" are in Belgium you know...

-----------------

Look at comments made in Russia-China summits, SCO meetings, and BRICS meetings by people much higher up on the food chain over the past year, and you will see what I mean. Better yet, look at the numerous bilateral actions, trade deals, and military maneuvers of Russia and China, for they speak even louder.

The point is that this support has been the case for quite some time, and this is absolute non-news. Going gaga about the plain-fact statement by a lowly ambassador and acting like this is something new is foolish. The only ones who do think this is news are those who are uninformed.

Ambassadors of China are the mouth pieces of the central government because they cannot speak directly to their people at home. Also, having an ambassador float an idea insulates them from blow-back if a major brouhaha develops. They can always cut the ambassador loose, recall him and say it worn't so.

Russia and China will never be "pals." At most they share an antipathy for the US and a few potentially common economic interests. China in particular has no true allies and doesn't want any. It does want vassals and is continually expanding its influence in SE Asia and anywhere else it can curry favor or buy entry. As for similarities betwen China and Russia? Essentially none, which would be obvious if you've ever actually dealt with mainland Chinese.

But even on that level no one really cares, either in business, nor in the general public. They all know its about economic activity and trade, not the crass currency machanism used in the trade settlements. Most of the people objecting to USD are the political elites within China and Russia (and some other G20 economy political centers) especially within Russian and Chinese Govts. They object to the advantage of reserve currency and resulting hegemony, printing and sanctioning potential, and routine rigging and manipulation (don't we all ... in principle ... but just not in practice).

The people actually doing economic stuff, in Russia and China, making the stuff, and trading, mostly couldn't give a toss which mechanism is used to settle and reconcile accounts. They have cash and they have fiat digits for that, and they generally don't have gold. So why the hell will they ever care about gold? The fiat would have to become completely worthless, first, and they would all have to have gold.

Otherwise gold remains a non-starter in trade settlements. So at best they will have fiat that claims to be backed by commodities (which could be gold), plus saleable tech, products and skill potential that people will trust (have confidence in) to be able to settle trade accounts.

Failed fiat will be replaced with more fiat, as per the drachma discussion in the contributor article earlier today ... which was posited by .. a gold fan!

So this whole discussion of fiat and gold is firstly extremely rarefied politically, and economically unreal, plus primarily geopolitical, and fully detached from the real-economy, that people actually give a daily toss about.

i.e. the people are never going to vote in a gold standard via mandate. So it would have to be imposed on them via force, on to the economic functioning. And that will not work even within an authoritarian country today. And it sure will not work in a globalized world, which does not and will not follow them into that sort of delusional 'solution'.

Particularly the commodity-currencies won;t go for that, they can and actually will refuse to do the same. So the pursuit of a gold backed currency trade settlement will inevitably be an economically isolating and disruptive plus destructive process, if there's not global choice, agreement and cooperation involved.

Going it alone with a pre-emptive gold currency would be much the same as self trade-sanctioning your own economy! Trust and confidence evaporates rapily when governments do reckless and dumb things that undermine real-economies and trade.

It's not been called the Petro-dollar for nothing, it's all about the commodity of oil (for now), and that's the transmission mechanism for future systemic currency changes and effective backing. The commodities in demand, and not merely gold. That's daft. USD went from gold-backed to oil-supply backed paper for good reason, and those reasons are as valid, or more-so, than when it occurred.

All the talking-up of gold as a currency backing commodity doesn't mean anything in a practical sense, to the people in business and trading material real products, and nor is it the slightest bit attractive to them, nor to the person working for wages or salaries.

A store of currency as profits into savings is always just a store of raw access to desirable resources and their reliable supply. That's its function. And that's the whole reason why people want to become 'rich'.

So any mechanism of trade settlement that is being internationally honored, for that purpose, will do for them, within any real-economy.

The real question is, will your real-economy be functioning well, or even at all, regardless of what trade settlement mechanism is or may be used and honored for trade settlement purposes within it, and between others internationally?

Moscow somehow doesn't ever seem to get that!

Real-economy will not be denied by currency myths and geopolitical hopey-BS.

Right. This comment in that Paul Craig speech explains why Obola - like GW Bush in not having an alternative foreign policy strategy - goes along with the neo-con imperialist agenda to create chaos and war around the world. To do otherwise would bring about his unplanned downfall:

"The neoconservatives are highly organized and networked, well-financed, supported by the print and TV media, and backed by the US military/security complex and the Israel Lobby. There is no countervailing power to their influence on US foreign power."

Meaning that, even though GW Bush is long gone and Wolfowitz & Co are largely out of government, their global foreign policy strategy of creating chaos and war continues unabated. Now carried out by the likes of the bitch in State: Nuland.

'? Oriental v. Occidental ?' WTF!!!

Think back to Jan. 6, 1950 when the British signed an alliance and recognized the PRC of China. The USSA was pissed to say the least because they muck'd up the containment plans/ policy agenda extraordinaire of Kennan and Marshall`perpetual`coup d'etat?

Next comes the Korean war which both sides say was started by the other, when in reality Rhee and Il-sung were probably [Big if?] secretly negotiating the Hermit`Kingdom freedom of annexation, once again having complete independence from both Japan and past Russian protectorate. Although, China was A`oK?!?

WWII ended with Russia getting the north whilst the south went to USA. Rhee was a brute and the south korean's hated him, likewise the north under Il-sung was not as bad? No one really knows how the war started but it never was won by either side!  Truman lost his long-lost friendship forever with Eisenhower for not firing MacArthur which inflamed the war with the USSR and China into a near Atomic War lasting three years+/+ with untold human suffering and death. (Think Syria is bad!) Remember the 38th parallel and the forgotten war of shame that could have been prevented. Period! All politic's when Truman became a political animal and lost his moral compass?

Now, back to the British recognizing the PRC in 1950... ironically one year later, [must] join the USSA in the Korean War against the Chinese. Lack of communication or just a deliberate assault dragged the UK into the conflict because of MacArthurs irresponsible aggression. He was living in Japan's Emperor palace and was close to the Japanese military post WWII, [and] a secret consultant to Chiang Kai-shek of the KMT (Kuomatang/Nationalist Pro Allies). MacArtur actually used the Japanese navy in the Korean Conflict and Formosa [Taiwan's] Chiang was bidding him on with the USSA. Marshall and the USSA had spent upwards of $Two$Billion USA dollars helping Chiang to defeat Mao Zedong. Funny how all the Nationalist Army joined forces with Mao?!?[1949]

oct. 1,1949 to jan.6,1950... and now six months later june 25, 1950 the Korean War starts. WTF! and ends on july 27, 1953 with zero winners, but a present-day 38th parallel and a total nut-job running the show with nuclear weapons and a fondness for the Japanese total annihilation! After what Japan did to China and Manchukuo [Manchuria] slaughtering the chinese peasants and Koreans like garbage, makes ISIS a lame duck regarding atrocities!

America was building up Europe and the Berlin blockade wasn't enough to manage, but, we had to get involved in another quagmire... the ME was going bonkers! What could happen next?

Now to my main thesis: if not for the Soviets [USSR], Mao would definitely have lost the Civil War and in fact Japan would probably be China today.  Russia not only helped China defend N. Korea, but it stopped MacArthur from dropping the Atomic bombs on China.

So what does that have to do with China siding with the Russian's today? Alot!?! Once the Ukraine becomes a Imperialist Colony of the EU aka. USSA, Russia is fenced-in, and China knows it's next...  once Hitlery gets her orders from the FRB Cabal and Bibi's zionist Israel?

But first, what does the USSA do with energy-rich Iran a close friend to Russia. The Ukraine via Caucasus sunni molems might hold some answers if Bandar-Bush is still with a[head]?

Ps. Rahm Emanuel could lose in Chicago setting up the political boss 'nerve-center' of the central usa for a new kinda president changing the suicidal course of the USSA's foreign policy or is it is in full-throttle-mode backing Hitlary?!?
