As The BBC notes, the Russian opposition politician and former deputy PM was shot to death on a Moscow street. Life News is reporting he was shot in the chest four times on a street very close to Red Square.

Late on the Friday night in downtown Moscow on Vasilevsky Spusk was killed prominent politician Boris Nemtsov.
According to preliminary data, the killer shot four times at the 55-year-old politician and fled the scene. The opposition leader died on the scene of the shooting.
The death of the politician was confirmed by his colleague from the "Republican Party of Russia - People's Freedom Party" Ilya Yashin.
"Nemtsov was shot. He's dead - Yashin wrote on his page on "Facebook".
Boris Nemtsov was one of the founders and leaders of the "Solidarity" party, co-chairman of a political party RPR-Parnassus, as well as a member of the Coordination Council of Russian opposition

The jealousy and gangster motives are too convenient with those earlier Tweets and the proximity of tomorrow's "anti-crisis" protest in Moscow.

The assassination of Nemtsov will probably make an assassination of Putin stand out as more "legitimate".
Nemtsov´s demise probably makes no significant difference to the prospects of the Russian opposition. Most of the electorate probably didn´t like him since he was associated with Yeltsin´s rule in the 1990s. If the opposition had a significant shortage of brains I guess that Nemtsov was a great asset for the opposition. But I doubt that is why he was killed. They probably got other people with brains. And then we have the martyr theory: Supporters of the opposition wanted to create a martyr out of Nemtsov since he couldn´t win any elections. That is a possible explanation. I can buy this theory if Nemtsov was suffering from something like terminal cancer or ALS. But sometimes people get killed by their own tribe despite similar political preferences. Take the murder of Trotsky, for instance. But spontaneously I still must say that it seems unlikely that Nemtsov was killed in order to create a martyr. Another possible explanation is that people who didn´t like the opposition wished to send a message to people who wanted a colour revolution in Russia as well saying that it can be dangerous to try to topple the government. We might kill you if you try. On the other hand I can´t see that the Russian opposition in the near future would be able to topple the current Russian government. I don´t think that the opposition will be able to gather significant support among people for the next five years or so. It should be more important to Putin to replace imports with domestically produced goods rather than kill opposition leaders if he wants to stay in power.
