Most Americans Are Slaves And They Don't Even Know It

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

Most Americans spend their lives working for others, paying off debts to others and performing tasks that others tell them that they “must” do.  These days, we don’t like to think of ourselves as “servants” or “slaves”, but that is what the vast majority of us are.  It is just that the mechanisms of our enslavement have become much more sophisticated over time.  It has been said that the borrower is the servant of the lender, and most of us start going into debt very early into our adult years.  In fact, those that go to college to “get an education” are likely to enter the “real world” with a staggering amount of debt.  And of course that is just the beginning of the debt accumulation.

Today, when you add up all mortgage debt, all credit card debt and all student loan debt, the average American household is carrying a grand total of 203,163 dollars of debt.  Overall, American households are more than 11 trillion dollars in debt at this point.  And even though most Americans don’t realize this, over the course of our lifetimes the amount of money that we will repay on our debts is far greater than the amount that we originally borrowed.  In fact, when it comes to credit card debt you can easily end up repaying several times the amount of money that you originally borrowed.  So we work our fingers to the bone to pay off these debts, and the vast majority of us are not even working for ourselves.  Instead, our work makes the businesses that other people own more profitable.  So if we spend the best years of our lives building businesses for others, servicing debts that we owe to others and making others wealthier, what does that make us?

In 2015, the words “servant” and “slave” have very negative connotations, and we typically don’t use them very much.

Instead, we use words like “employee” because they make us feel so much better.

But is there really that much of a difference?

This is how Google defines “servant”…

“a person who performs duties for others, especially a person employed in a house on domestic duties or as a personal attendant.”

This is how Google defines “slave”…

“a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.”

This is how Google defines “employee”…

“a person employed for wages or salary, especially at nonexecutive level.”

Yes, most of us might not be “legal property” of someone else in a very narrow sense, but in a broader sense we all have to answer to someone.

We all have someone that we must obey.

And we all have obligations that we must meet or else face the consequences.

At this point, Americans are more dependent on the system than ever before.  Small business ownership in the U.S. is at a record low, and the percentage of Americans that are self-employed has fallen to unprecedented levels in recent years.  From a very early age, we are trained to study hard so that we can get a good “job” (“just over broke”) and be good cogs in the system.

But is that what life is about?

Is it about being a cog in a system that ultimately benefits others?

Perhaps you don’t think that any of this applies to you personally.

Well, if someone came up to you and asked you what you truly own, what would you say?

Do you own your vehicle?

Most Americans don’t.

In fact, today the average auto loan at signing is approximately $27,000, and many of them stretch on for six or seven years.

What about your home?

Do you own it?

Most Americans don’t.

In fact, overall the banks have a much greater “ownership” interest in our homes and our land than we do.

But even if you have your home totally “paid off”, does that mean that you actually “own” it?

Well, no, not really.

Just see what happens if you quit paying your property taxes (rent) to the proper authorities.

So if they can take your home away from you for not paying rent (property taxes), do you really own it?

That is something to think about it.

What about all of your stuff?

Do you own it?

Perhaps.

But a very large percentage of us have willingly enslaved ourselves in order to acquire all of that stuff.

Today, the typical U.S. household that has at least one credit card has approximately $15,950 in credit card debt.

And if you do not pay off those credit card balances, the credit card companies will unleash the hounds on you.

Have you ever had an encounter with a debt collector?

They can be absolutely brutal.  And they use those tactics because they work.  In fact, they are so good at what they do that many of those that own debt collection companies have become exceedingly wealthy.  The following is from a recent CNN article…

Yachts. Mansions. Extravagant dinner parties. Life is good for the founders of one of the nation’s biggest government debt collectors.

That firm, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, rakes in big money from government contracts that allow it to pursue debtors over toll violations, taxes and parking tickets. While the debts often start small, the Austin-based firm charges high fees, which can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the bill.

After growing this business from a small Texas law firm in the late 1970’s to a nationwide debt collection powerhouse, the firm’s founders and top brass have walked away with millions of dollars.

And I haven’t even mentioned our collective debts yet.

We have willingly chosen to collectively enslave ourselves on a local, a state and a national level.

It is bad enough that we are doing this to ourselves.  But we are also cruelly saddling future generations of Americans with the largest mountain of debt in the history of the planet.  The following is from my previous article entitled “Barack Obama Says That What America Really Needs Is Lots More Debt“…

When Barack Obama took the oath of office, the U.S. national debt was 10.6 trillion dollars.  Today, it has surpassed the 18 trillion dollar mark.  And even though we are being told that “deficits are going down”, the truth is that the U.S. national debt increased by more than a trillion dollars in fiscal 2014.  But that isn’t good enough for Obama.  He says that we need to come out of this period of “mindless austerity” and steal money from our children and our grandchildren even faster.  In addition, Obama wants to raise taxes again.  His budget calls for 2 trillion dollars in tax increases over the next decade.  He always touts these tax increases as “tax hikes on the rich”, but somehow they almost always seem to end up hitting the middle class too.  But whether or not Congress ever adopts Obama’s new budget is not really the issue.  The reality of the matter is that the “tax and spend Democrats” and the “tax and spend Republicans” are both responsible for getting us into this mess.  Future generations of Americans are already facing the largest mountain of debt in the history of the planet, and both parties want to make this mountain of debt even higher.  The only disagreement is about how fast it should happen.  It is a national disgrace, but most Americans have come to accept this as “normal”.  If our children and our grandchildren get the opportunity, they will curse us for what we have done to them.

So can we really call ourselves the “home of the brave and the land of the free”?

Isn’t the truth that the vast majority of us are actually deeply enslaved?

People enslave themselves by allowing their children to attend Public (brainwashing) School and then grow up to be " law enforcement". And we all know for sure there are no laws for the criminals in " Government".

How the fuck can this article talk about slavery without once mentioning the income tax?? Even if you don't have any debt, you are a slave in this country because the Federal Government gets paid for your labor before you do. When you don't own the fruits of your own labor, you are a SLAVE.

"How the fuck can this article talk about slavery without once mentioning the income tax?"

Add in state and local income tax, sales taxes, property taxes, gas taxes, and all the myriad of other taxe, fees and licenses, and EVERYONE is paying at LEAST 50% of their income (work) to the government in one way shape or form.  If you are in the higher tax brackets it is probably more like 70%.

THat means for every 10 days you work, you work for the government 5 to 7 of those days.  Slave is ABSOLUTELY what we are.

I live in a town of 35000 I advertised my business on Gooogle I may have 15 competitors but when you search for the business mine is Most of my competitirs come up on the first page but not mine, mine comes up all alone on the 4th page.

why I ask? Well because gooogle wants $2,000 then it will come up on the first page.

So I told them that I thought they were a search engine not an advertising engine.

Now they keep calling me with this long song and dance trying to get $2,ooo from me.

We all live better than kings and queens did before 1900 as far as comfort goes. But I agree, that doesn't mean we should tolerate rich a-holes stealing the fruits of our productivity. That said, the more we choose to scale down, the less we are enslaved. We don't even need half the junk for which we work, the endless consumerism enslaves us. Now that some of us are waking up to that and changing it, the government is forcing us to buy things = slavery 100%.

tyler, why do you post this drivel by this bonehead author?

only an idiot like michael snyder could attempt to conflate slavery with employment.

any rational, sane person understands that one is forced, another is a voluntary exchange of services for compensation.

conflating slavery with employment is like saying rape and marriage are the same thing because they both involve sex.

and then this piece of complete idiocy takes the cake:

"And we all have obligations that we must meet or else face the consequences."

it's called life, mr snyder. it is ALWAYS the case that we must face the consequences of our actions. the fact that you rented a house and voluntarily agreed to pay $1500 a month for use of that house, does not mean there is some vast conspiracy to get you.

if that's too much responsibility for you, then go back home to live in your parents' basement.

Of course some goon with "stacking" in his name is the first to defend the MBA thesis of "its a privilege to be employed".

Yeah, so completely OPTIONAL that if you don't have a job, you're on the fucking street. Seems like you forgot that part, eh? What other "choices" do you have, eating gravel or twigs? Face it, the USA is a doddering old grandpa about to shit itself, and being employed in this "great nation" is just a gilded cage to feed the tax machine.

You never were free, so no wonder you have no idea how to wrap your feeble mind around it. You MUST be employed, or you are out on the street, and that kind of binary decision sure seems more like slavery than anything else, especially when you have to fund the madmen at the top by paying income tax and state taxes.

But I'm sure you'll just turn around and "HURR DURR EMPLOYMENT INNOVATION BLARGLE" or some other nonsense, so I'll just close this with - Go fuck yourself.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can assure you of the following:

1. THE FED wasn't my idea [& even if the whole central banking system as it exists today were to come crumbling down ~ I would neither seek to, nor support anyone who tried to rebuild it whether the system was asymmetrically run by Harvard Grads, Trekkies, Pastafarians, or any other groups who are allegedly "smarter than" me].

2. The IRS wasn't my idea

3. The Balfour Agreement wasn't my idea

4. I do not belong to any political action groups, [real, mythical, or otherwise], such as the 'Luciferian Anti-Defamation Society'.

5. I'm neither interested in building a pipeline across Syria, nor starting a war with Iran or Russia, or anyone else for that matter

6. I'm not interested in taking over or otherwise occupying Palestinian Land.

7. I don't support Apartheid

8. I don't participate, actively or otherwise, in spying operations, meddle in foreign politics, or see to it that the meddling I do creates a system whereby the citizens of another country foot the bill both in terms of money, lives, & liberty.

9. I don't steal nuclear technology, then use it as an undeclared & unregulated 'Samson Option' against the world [while bringing to bear everything in my power to prevent my enemies from developing their own programs by way of propaganda & lies]

10. If I'm a 'slave' [as this thread suggests], If & when I do become freed, I have no intentions of scrambling out into the desert & building Golden Calfs.

11. If a man like Jesus of Nazereth were to walk the earth today, I believe I would recognize him and NOT hold him in contempt because he got pissed at moneychangers.

12. I don't run Hollywood [hell, I barely even watch TV]

13. I don't publish newspapers, or run network news channels that have been proved to be propaganda machines.

14. I'm not involved in internet or communications, such as Google, or Facebook [which have been proved to be backdoor operations for the NSA].

15. I'm 100% for free speech, and am therefore 100% against efforts towards 'censorship' [whether that means deleting comments on blogs, or creating a system whereby one has to pass through FILTERS, such as Facebook, to be able to even make a comment, therefore, effectively rendering free speech useless because it is well known that certain types of comments, & accounts, get deleted].

16. I respect your right to disagree with everything I've said here

Other than that [& perhaps one or two more things that I forgot], any subset of 'sneaky bastards' are just fine with me. That is to say that if you're 'ALINGNED' with my thought process on most of those things, I'll gladly treat you as a fellow human being. If, INSTEAD, you'd prefer to align with 'folks' who either actively participate in the things on my list, OR, acknowledge 'silent participation' by not policing their own ranks, or being vocal about injustices, then yes, you swim with the pool of aforementioned 'sneaky bastards' which would make it very difficult for me to trust you or be friends with you. And it may even compel me to speak out against you, or take the opportunity to caution others as to the risk that they might be being schemed against in an organized [loosely or not] manner.

Lastly, the 'boy are they going to get theirs when you're in charge of things', part would not apply to me because:

- I'm not looking for retribution

- I'm not looking to be 'IN CHARGE'

- I'd just prefer to be left alone

Have a nice day!

I'll admit I struggled with that part a little. Generally speaking, I agree with what you say.

Let's say that my distinction leans more towards the side of deflecting legitimate criticisms [playing 'the race card', so to speak], and/or other 'ad hominem' tactics that make a mockery out of legitimate debate [of which, the comment by tarabel was an example and thus, compelled me to post a comment in the first place].

From the dawn of Hall’s career in the early 1920s until his death in 1990, the Los Angeles teacher wrote about America’s “secret destiny.” The United States, in Hall’s view, was a society that had been planned and founded by secret esoteric orders to spread enlightenment and liberty to the world.

WHATS GUNNA HAPPEN WHEN ALL RELIGION IS TAKEN AWAY DUE TO WW3

The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the "agentur" of the "Illuminati" between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion…We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time." 4

It was some state with much oil revenue, from the mid-west, I believe.

I'd google it, but it's too depressing.

But you are right - the public unions and the unions spent HUGE money, much of it funneled in from outside 'cause this kind of thinking cannot be allowed, and the cunts voted down getting rid of the property tax.

The main argument was oil money was transitory...so we'd better not rely on it!

So, I suppose they didn't realize they could add the property tax back if revenue fell? Stupid, fucking, useless cunts.

For most people, they can't even achieve property because of income taxes. You know, those living hand to mouth? Not everyone pays property tax. But if you work legally, you pay income tax.

Additionally, property taxes are generally levied at the local level. While income taxes are levied at the state (most states) and at the Federal level. I get hit with double taxation on income - by the state and federal.

Property tax is a farce.  Do the people have an inalienable right to property or not?  They most certainly do.  It is a God given, natural right.  Other entities (other than churches) do not have that right.  There is only one 'hopper' for property taxation.  That is an administrative machine.  The people get thrown in that same hopper and it is up to them individually to realize it and react properly.  The people however are ignorant (by design of the state education system), so most do nothing, and most others that do something, fail to exit the administrative machine and do not prevail.

Home ownership (and property too) in the US is a scam. You buy this house and maintain and insure it but you never really own it, because there are always property taxes due and non-payment will result in seizure and loss of it. There are only a few places in the US where allodial title is allowed and even then you have to pay more for it.

The purchase of a house is nothing more than the securing of a future decline in rent costs once the property is 'paid for' and nothing more than that. If you perpetually owe someone taxes (payments) you don't really own it.

If you create the money, how come you have to pay it back (with interest) to somebody else ? In fact, you borrow money from some institution. The fact that the above mentioned institution does indeed create those money out of thin air, doesn't make you less of a debtor. Permanent (or even long term) debt limits your freedom of action, hence the servitude situation.

When you borrow from a bank, the currency does NOT come from the deposits of other bank clients, it is created out of thin air via a fraudulent system called fractional reserve banking, whereby a bank with X deposits can legally lend out 10X, 40X, 100X, infinityX... depending on local banking regulations.

Allowing any group to live by a different set of laws, in effect privileges denied the rest of society, has very deleterious effects on society as a whole:

-the bankster creation of currency out of thin air inflates the currency, which in turn drives inflation (i.e. in the 50's most homes were bought cash, now mortgages are standard, the US dollar has lost 98% of it's value since 1913...))

-bankster profits are used to buy influence and corrupt government

-bankster profits are used to influence public policy (i.e. banning all medical care other than allopathic, removing reason as a subject from public schools, advancing any agenda that destroys the community and the family ...)

-Imbibing society with a culture of theft and fraud

I could go on, but you see where I am going with this, you must look past the tip of your nose as to how you may benefit personally from this or that facet of fractional reserve lending and look at the big picture

... Bullshit. It is not slavery if I borrow money for my own perceived benefit.

The only bullshit here, is the one in your head ! First of all, and regardless of your perceived benefits (which might be entirely illusory, in some cases), the fact that you owe a debt to somebody does limit your actions, as you have to dedicate time and resources to paying back said debt. If you borrow in order to create something of value that can be sold in profit, then your debt is perfectly OK. That's actually what credit was created for. However, if you borrow in order to satisfy your personal vanities, then you're most definitely agreeing to enter servitude, and for the dumbest of all reasons: a short dose of "feeling good" about yourself.

Second of all, the gov has exactly the same justification for imposing its taxes: at least part of it, depending on the type of gov, is for your own benefit (perceived or not). Go ask them if you don't believe it... they'll even tell you that taxes are the price to be paid for living in a civilized society (that one always cracks me up ;)

Tax on labor or income tax was supposed to be temporary and is unconstitutional and against the law. You are a % of a slave. The amount you pay in tax is the percentage of slave that you are. You may use some services like roads, but that is state. If you own a house, property taxes are due, don't pay? not your house anymore. so you don't fully own shit. Property taxes pay for schools, even if you don't have kids... You do not see increased quality of life from Federal Taxes.

Sales tax reduces sales, labor tax reduces labor. That is if ppl are smart enough to realize if it doesn't make dollars it doesn't make sense (cents).

We used to have this guy with an operation that was very reliable & did things at a very reasonable cost. But then a new HA President was elected, who had both a personal feud with the prior service contractor, plus a good relationship with another guy who was getting into business doing the same type of contract work.

Yes ~ You're absolutely CORRECT... It 'IS' "a lot easier to sit on the sidelines and bitch."

Why? Because in this instance, I've weighed my options & figured out that the extra hundred bucks [or two] that it costs me [per year], isn't worth the 'time value' it would cost me to pursue what might seem to be the more compelling option...

In a similar fashion [hypothetically, of course], I have ZERO plans to 'self immolate' on the steps of the US Capitol in protest of other things [because I've weighed the ramifications, & decided that, not only would it hurt, but that doing so would]:

- probably never even get me my 15 minutes of fame

- If it DID succeed in getting 15 minutes of fame, I'd be usurped by Kardashian & Beiber b4 it even made the nightly news

- Most likely, be a story that ended up being 'REPACKAGED' & sold to the public as behavior from a CRAZED LUNATIC, [which might, for a time, actually be counter-productive to any message that I may or may not have intended].

I would have to agree, but at the present time I don't see any way of getting those two things accomplished.

Sales tax is a far more equitable way of funding, and those who consume the most would pay the most. For #2 however, the pay-in for SS is so far behind the pay-out that 1) if you could get back what you paid in for SS from the Fed it wouldn't be much and 2) since SS doesn't really exist where is .gov going to find the $$ to give people back what they paid in?

While I agree it should have been mentioned the property tax is more enslaving. One has to have income to pay the property tax. Without property tax one could purchase a place to live and then drop off the income radar.

The whole system is built to enslave us where the only way out is living an impoverished existence owning nothing. Having one's own business isn't enough to escape. One has to be a member of the club and we ain't in it and it takes Bill Gates like money to get in.

Inflation and punishing savers is deliberate to keep people who are building up a cache of 'f-you' money to get out of the system from being able to. We can't even buy our freedom these days. Three centuries ago a slave could buy his freedom from his wages. As I learned it slaves could be lent out as employees of various businesses and the required practice was that the slave's owner would get half the wages and the slave would keep the other half. But so much for that in today's system. We get far less than half after all the masters take a cut and then what we can save is decimated by monetary policy.

Taxes are far and away the largest expense item for anyone who is actually productive and working hard enough to theoretically have a pretty good life. It is the real slavery as it comes with force. Government debt including taxes are nondischargeable. So, even if I go bankrupt, all my creditors will get stiffed except for the government. Now, that is real coercion.

This system of 'Enslave' might be finally catching up to Americans, but when you born in South America, it’s all too familiar.

Let me show you how: By Don Stewart, of OFW.

The US solution is always to offer credit, usually only good for buying stuff made in the US. Take Cuba. What do you think the conversation is like?

US…we will extend billions in credit, to purchase US goods
Cuba…and then how do we repay the debts?
US…we will make the debt a balloon payment due in 25 years (like California school districts)
Cuba…but what about our children paying off the balloon note?
US…We will have incinerated the world in a nuclear war long before then

Pretty close. Escrava is delivering a message that few want to hear but is true.

Read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.   By John Perkins...

Yeah, but the Jive is more than just a one liner. They might include the notion that population increases will spread out the debt among the people so it won't hurt.

Then John Perkins can get out his Survey and chart based on Cuban Government Data to prove the rate of population growth.

Just one way you probably picked up in Perkins books.

Self-enslavement

Wrong!

Any ability of awareness by the sheeple has been destroyed by religion believes, corporate propaganda, television, and our indoctrinated educational system.

So, the sheeple is too simplistic, thus incapable of critical thinking and honest inquiry.

The sheeple wants a job, health insurance, and a rising 401k statement.

it would be much more straightforward if tax rates were cut down to zero, and govt would just print the money instead... wait... they re pritning it anyway, so why the fuck they need taxes???

probably just to make people more miserable with each passing year...

But its sites like this and many others that is waking people up. First a critical mass of awakened people, then the solution.

The solution is the same one that is working for religions.

No one forces their belief system on others but you are free to join with others inclined to live in accordance with a shared belief system.

Why do we allow them to tax us if they print themselves money for nothing?

Sun, 03/01/2015 - 00:04 | 5841584 Parrotile

Why? Because "They" have the capability to make the individual's existence very unpleasant indeed. and "They" have absolutely no problem in demonstrating this.

Power, connections, full ownership of the assets that count (Banking / Finance / Media), and all the right connections at the International level.

That's why.

Why don't we the people take our money printing press back from them?

Sun, 03/01/2015 - 09:14 | 5842116 TeethVillage88s

Technically there are no Printing Presses involved.

I think what you want to do is Amend the Banking Charters for Wall Street Banks, FED Prime Dealer Banks, and Shadow Banks/Hedge Funds. Reduce the power of the bank to Create money out of thin air.

But of course you have to reform:

- Standardized Accounting
- Standardize Financial Instruments
- Standardized Financial Ratings
- Make Compensation, Administrative Costs, Overhead for fringe benefits & expensive Offices part of the Financial Rating as it indicates "Looting of the Corporation"

Wall Street Banks can create Derivatives and brand new financial Schemes all day long since they are not Standardized.

- And guess what if US Citizens refuse to bailout the Banks, the bank & the Executives can just Fly Out of the Country taking all the US Capital they control

Is that what you want?

Simple. An industrial economy requires a small handful to own the means of production and the rest to be at least a little bit dispossessed. Think about it for a moment... the whole economy and infrastructure rests on hundreds of millions of jobs that absolutely nobody would do if they had a choice. Without some form of forced labor it'd be back to the stone age, virtually overnight. I would consider that an acceptable tradeoff, but I have a feeling I'm the exception.

I wondered that myself and think that they do it cause it slows down inflation to a realistic 7-9% (not fucking 2% as stated). Also it makes ppl think that is where the money comes from and they are being patriotic rather than understanding fractional reserve banking and corporate tax loopholes/offshore banking. The money mostly comes from loans, loans are creating money out of nothing. They make money off of fees and interest. Tangilbe federal reserve notes are a very small percentage of actual money. Most money is a number on a screen nowadays.

I'd like to see gold in the strip of those 100's instead of some hologram.
