Meanwhile In California, Unambiguously Ungood...

Tyler Durden's picture

Having discovered this week what Americans are spending their "gas savings" on, and noted that nationwide gas prices are rising at the fastest pace in over a decade; as AP reports, for Californians, it's considerably worse as gas prices have soared 60c to $3.23 per gallon in the last few weeks. Between refinery shutdowns (due to strikes and explosions) removing 17% of California's production, and the seasonal shift to the less-polluting summer blend of gas mandated in California, supply remains drastically short spiking prices 20-30c on Thursday alone as one gas station owner exclaimed, in 48 years "I've never seen anything like this kind of [price spike]."

Nationwide, gas prices are rising at the fastest pace in over a decade...

But California is the hardest hit for now. (photo taken Friday in LA)

As AP reports, gas prices are soaring in California in a classic example of supply and demand after an explosion stopped gasoline production at an Exxon Mobil refinery while another remains offline due to labor unrest...

Average retail gas prices in the state have surged 25 cents a gallon in less than a week, from $2.98 per gallon for regular on Monday to $3.23 per gallon on Friday. That caps a run that saw the price of regular unleaded go up 60 cents per gallon since Jan. 30 as refineries prepare to shift to a summer blend of fuels.

In some areas of Southern California, gas station owners were forced to pass price hikes of 24 cents per gallon along to consumers on Thursday after seeing wholesale prices shoot up. Prices in Northern California lagged a day, but by Friday were also rising; an independent operator with a chain of gas stations around the San Francisco Bay area boosted prices 20 cents a gallon for regular on Friday, to $3.19.

The situation underscores the frustrating complexity of the gasoline market in California, where state environmental regulations mandate a specialized blend of fuel that isn't used anywhere else in the U.S.

Because of that, California is economically isolated and can't easily or quickly purchase fuel from outside the state in a crisis.

Between the strike at the Martinez Tesoro refinery and the explosion at Exxon's Torrance refinery, the two facilities combined make up 17 percent of the state's crude oil processing capacity, said Gordon Schremp, a senior fuels specialist with the California Energy Commission.

"It takes a while to get some significant supplies from outside," Schremp said. "It's very normal that we'd see a significant price spike."

...

Gas station owners, meanwhile, chafed at having to pass the costs on to consumers. The profit margin for station owners was 18.5 cents per gallon in California on Friday, a break-even or money-losing proposition for many independent retailers, said Jeff Lenard, a spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores.

In Torrance, station owner Frank Scotto was forced to increase his prices by 24 cents per gallon on Thursday. He hasn't seen such a spike since he went into the gas station business in 1967, he said.

"I printed out the price change and I'm framing this thing because I've never seen this kind of thing in all my years," said Scotto, who owns a Mobil and Exxon station.

*  *  *

As GasBuddy shows - the California differential is extreme...

*  *  *

However, while the extreme price moves are hitting California for now, given RBOB's recent rise, nationwide gas prices look set to top $2.60 within a week...

Or as CNBC's Larry Kudlow would say: "Unambiguously ungood" for everyone.

Lots of 'em stand in the Home Depot lots waiting to be picked up for day labor.  Very energy efficient.
So yeah, they're saved from the last price increase which is good for the economy.  They should also fill in 1099 parts A, B and C for the ObamaCare schedules because it's patriotic and the more paperwork, the bigger GDP.  Shit's all good, don't smell and everybody's happy or it's off to the reeducation camp for some attitude adjustment.
So we get to spend our hugher priced healthcare savings on higher priced gas savings.

Peachy

Statehouse bastards have wanted it for a while. They didn't hesitate to ram it in when fuel prices fell. They and their cronies were running ads depicting school buses full of singing kids falling through decrepit bridges. It was only a dime a gallon, and it's for the children.

Anyway a couple of years ago Ames got some spectacular gateway lights along highway 30 thanks to some wisely spent IDOT dollars.
• Enhancement Grant: $683,00 (from IDOT)
• Iowa DOT planting grant: $63,600
• South Ames business: $46,000
• Ames property assessment: $148,000
• Ames local option sales tax: $99,000

If you watch closely, you can pick out the million dollar light show from all the surrounding road and commercial lighting in the area. With all the new gas taxes, maybe they can afford to upgrade them to something more impressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgnkSwMFFz0

(Spellcheck seems to think I misspelled IDOT, maybe there should be a second "I"?).

HOPE, HOPE and CHANGE!!!!!!!!!

CARB’s New Hidden Gas Tax Could Add Up to 76 Cents per Gallon to Fuel Costs

The cap-and-trade for fuels is a regulation already adopted by the California Air Resources Board that will increase the cost of gasoline and diesel fuels by up to 76 a cents a gallon, according to the agency’s own analysis!

And those costs won’t stop at the pump – they’ll increase the cost of everything that uses gasoline and diesel to transport products to market, including everyday essentials like food and medicine.

People from the Pacific NW don't like Californians because they have sky rocketed the price of living in Oregon and Washington. They have sold there dirty little shacks for lots of money and then come up to Oregon and Washington and buy big homes for what they paid for their little shacks in California. On top of that, there is a certain holier than thou "attitude", i.e. lacking gratitude, that Californians brought with them that has infected our way of life. Started in the late 80's and continues to this day.

"Walt What" is a perfect example of what has happened (everything that has gone wrong) to the once "Golden" State. California died in the late 70's. That's when it too was invaded by droves of outsiders. The old timers, i.e. those who were born in the 30's and 40's know that California was truly a great place to live, back then. But then, like the Washington state of today, it changed. It started in the mid to late 60's and by the end of the 70's, the magic was gone. Yes, it's still sunny. Yes, the ocean is quite spectacular. But no, the women are not at all like the California women of a bygone pass, circa Beach Boys era of the 60's. The ladies may look nice but that's where it ends,i.e many of the attractive ones are all caught up in the "hollywood syndrome"..waiting to be discovered.

this is why it's so important to think in multi-generational terms; what you do, the money you make (or inherit), & the things you learn aren't exclusively FOR YOU, they are part of a tapestry your family builds for generations that follow.

1. The US has thousands of miles of coastline. Many of them look better than California and they're not freezing cold either.

2. You mean more plastic and shallow, money-grubbing females than anywhere else.

3. Temps in the entire state of California haven't been below 48 in three years? LMAO!!!

Typical California douchebag who thinks his 4 square block neighborhood is the entire world. Plenty of people can afford to live there, but why would they waste $2 million for an average home that costs $150K in most places and have to deal with masses of illegals and the dim bulbs running the government? The average person works 40-60 hours and sleeps another 72 hours a week. Do you spend the rest of your time looking out the window at the coast? LOL

lovely post. straw man, much?

1. my little section of the coastline is neither 'freezing cold' nor like any other part of the US.

2. did a pretty girl turn you down, that it makes you so hateful of beautiful women?

3. did i really have to say "In my neck of PCH," I haven't experienced temps below 48 in over 2 years?

"haterz gonna hate" but since you asked, yes, I regularly spend evenings watching the sun set from just outside that window, cuz it is beautiful, and Wait What appreciates beauty.

i live on the east coast and im relocating out that way for a "skilled" job and quite frankly, many people who are skilled are moving to cheaper areas because the cost of living isnt worth it.

im happy to be moving somewhere nice but ultimately its just a temporary spot, its no place to get settled down since its so expensive and the good jobs are hard to come by from what I can see.

it's like that where im at now on the east coast..theres the lucky few who are higly skilled and educated who still have good stable jobs while even the average corporate worker is seeing his pay checks dwindle because of the cost of living and the ACA.

There is a reason why cities in the southeast are growing pretty fast, it's cheap to live there and companies are setting up shop there so they can pay their workers less than they would in California or NY/NJ/CT.

They also don't have to deal with unions and tight regulations like they do in the aforementioned states.

The coasts are dying economically because of this shit.

That's why people are moving out..

I'm caught in a Brain Drain Vortex.

Proseltytizing Cult Monkeys and all kinds of Crazy Fed/DoD/MIC/StateofCalifornia/LocalCities Employees have organized some "Civil Disobedience" Horseshit Racket to try to keep the Talented here to be fleeced.

At several Job Networking Organizations, I've had some Scientology and Xian Science 'tards joining in the fray - telling recrutiers that I "have ESP; and we've proved it, so we want him to stay".

You know you've the Deluded stalking you when they actually Board a Plane bound for Japan at the last minute, cause a ruckus in Flight, try to start a Fight on the Train from Narita to Tokyo, then stir up a gossip that I was some sort of rapist/masturbator/sexfiend/murderer at the Client Site (Major Japanese Electronic Mfgr) 50 Miles away.

One of the Taiwanese female miscreants involved in selling the Train Tix was later seen working the customer service counter at a Japanese Grocery Store in Gardena, when/where I had my Car's Tire Punctured - right in front of the Store after I made a 5 minute stop.   I went to the Cops, filed the report, talked to the store manager who would only show me the minutexminute scan and not the front entrance cameras.  There was a older Taiwanese Janitor cleaning up the Lot on the scans (closest human before and after).

After a few weeks after the event, the Janitor and the CustSvc Gal were both gone.

Same crew bashed a car into one of mine a few months later; and the culprit hid the car at a neighbor's garage until the next day, when I saw him drive off.  Called the Police - even with the paint and the info(parts and pieces too), they stated that that's not enough to investigate and convince a Jury of 12.

I'll be out of here in due time.

There are more Welfare Recipients than Wage Earners.  Tack on Unemployment Insurance takers (funding running out), Govt Employees, exporting/outsourcing overseas, and the recent Stock-buyback-indueed-layoffs(HP and others in State), you're left with Hollywood/Disney/Beach Tourists and Con-men feeding off anyone worth hiring.

- OTOH... 'Snopes', owned by the Mickelsons, [which has been somewhat 'outed' in terms of TRUTH BIAS], is, well, seen as something different from what they claim to be...

I guess it depends on your perspective...

1. If you consider GOOGLE to be all powerful ~ then this could clearly be a threat

2. If you understand the BIAS that the GOOGLE ownership architecture, & Board of Directors, represents, [and can therefore make a valid judgement on thereto], then it's not necessarily a problem...

The choice is yours...

In a parallel universe, THIS could actually be the thing that burns GOOGLE to ashes [no pun intended].

They do actually reference the CIA Factbook as one of their sources of "truthiness".

Sun, 03/01/2015 - 14:38 | 5843058 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

Last time I looked at the CIA factbook, it listed Russia as having a lower Gini index than the US.  This is despite using the 2007 number for the US and the 2012 number for Russia, with the 2013 number for the US being avaliable, and it has gotten a lot worse for the US during that time.  If you like Russia, there is a bone for you to hold up.  If you don't like Russia or don't give a shit, just know that by our own measure and despite our propaganda, income inequalty is worse in the US than it is in Russia.

Let that sink in.  Russia, which I tend to think has some serious problems, has less income inequality than the US.  Russia is by no means in a good spot on income inequality, which means that the US is terrible.

This is not me saying "Russia GOOD" or "Russia BAD," it is me saying, let's look at our own situation here for a moment, and if we see some problems, maybe we ought to fix them.

Or we can just blame the rest of the world and start bombing some folks.

Sun, 03/01/2015 - 14:50 | 5843102 MsCreant
MsCreant's picture

And to bring the point full circle, by using different baselines for comparison and concluding we do better, CIA factbook is clearly full of lies and deliberate deception. Using that as a baseline for truth does not work. Using it as a baseline for approved propoganda on the other hand, works great.

Sun, 03/01/2015 - 14:31 | 5843030 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

I don't think that the supply lines even need to break.  I think that shit would get real if the NFL filed for bankruptcy.  Of course, I also think that we're more likely to experience supply lines breaking BEFORE the circuses go away, and that if anything, the circuses will go away as a result of supply lines breaking, but that's a whole other discussion on just how warped our society has become.  IMO, the people running this shitshow won't give more weight to food getting delivered than they do to keeping entertainment up and running until food is not being delivered, and by that time, it will be too late.

The answer is simple.

Get out of gmail and start using other search engines.  Don't use google products.  Blacklist them.

I know for a fact they scan email content.  I mentioned something to my brother about a product one time in an email.  Right after that I get nothing but ads on zh and other places referring to the same product.  It happened more than once.

NSA, CIA is only part of the problem.  Apple, Microsoft and Google are worse.

Time to humble them.

There is a problem with this "alternative".

As Google is the largest Search Engine then their "Truthiness" rankings will direct more traffic to the "approved truthiness" websites.

As DuckDuckGo uses a paradigm that selects listings of searches upon Internet Traffic, and since Google has directed the traffic to the"approved truthiness" websites, then the DuckDuckGo Search Engine results will just be comprable to the results from a Google Search...as it is currently.

"If we can fabricate (enter the MSM) long enough with reasonable justification to make it LOOK like prices should be higher/lower, prices will go higher/lower."

It's taking place in every place where manipulation and distortion is required in every asset class.

At some point true price discovery as a genuine honest market mechanism has to come back from the stratosphere and re-enter reality.

At some point.
