$4 Million In Gold Bars Stolen In 11th Largest Heist In History

Tyler Durden's picture

Long-time Zero Hedge readers may remember the rather surreal moment towards the beginning of the long-running German tungsten/gold repatriation saga, when Bundesbank Executive Board member Andreas Dombret assured the NY Fed that Germany wasn’t afraid of Simon Gruber (or Goldfinger for that matter) “masterminding gold heists in U.S. vaults.”

Well, since it now appears Germany is all set to ramp up its repatriation efforts (see the NY Fed’s November monthly outflow numbers), Buba may want to reconsider its stance on the threat posed by ambitious bandits, as less than 24 hours ago, an estimated 4 million in gold bars were commandeered (on the side of I-95 no less), by gun wielding desperados.

From CBS:

North Carolina authorities and the FBI are investigating the theft of an estimated $4 million worth of gold allegedly stolen during an armed robbery along Interstate 95 on Sunday evening, CBS affiliate WRAL reports.

After mechanical problems with their truck, two armed guards who were traveling from Miami to Massachusetts with a shipment of silver and gold pulled over at mile marker 114 on the Interstate.

According to the station, the sheriff's office says the guards reported that three armed men in a white van approached them, ordered them to the ground, tied their hands behind their backs and forced them to walk into some nearby woods. Investigators, who responded to the scene shortly before 7 p.m., said the men then reportedly took several barrels of gold and left while the guards were in the woods.

While it’s not clear if the perpetrators here were in fact relatives of anyone killed by John McLane, what we do know is that this was no small feat. Here’s local affiliate WNCN: “...gold robberies of this magnitude are rare. The largest gold robbery in Florida, for example, was the $2.8 million stolen in 2012.”

A quick look back at last year’s ZH post chronicling the 15 greatest gold heists of all-time reveals that yesterday’s 6:50 p.m. robbery was in fact the 11th biggest gold bullion heist ever! Below, find the original infographic.

What about the Tattler article from 1974?

http://s6.zetaboards.com/Bill_Still_Reforum/topic/1176801/1/

Informant Dies Mysteriously

New York — On July 3, 1974, 59-year-old Louise Auchincloss Boyer died after falling from the window of her 10th-floor apartment at 530 East 86th Street. The event was ruled a probable suicide and duly reported the next day in the New York Times. Note that Mrs. Boyer was the granddaughter of none other than Col. House, the man who guided the Federal Reserve Act through Congress for Morgan, Rockefeller, Warburg and company. Although to date it has not been determined whether there was a relationship, Jackie Kennedy’s father was Hugh Auchincloss. It is known that Jackie’s grandfather helped John D. Rockefeller found Standard Oil.
Mrs. Boyer’s death torched a firestorm of controversy and rocked a previously inviolable element of Americana — the security of the nation’s gold reserves held at Fort Knox. Perhaps not coincidentally, only three days earlier, Mrs. Boyer, had been featured as an unnamed source in a spectacular story in the tabloid, National Tattler. Readers were shocked by the sensational headline:

“International Monetary Expert Sounds Alarm:
NO GOLD LEFT IN FORT KNOX!
Federal Reserve System Charged With Secret Sale of
U.S. Gold Supplies Overseas to Super-Rich David Rockefeller.”
The story charged that the Rockefeller family was manipulating the Federal Reserve to sell off Fort Knox gold at low prices to anonymous European speculators who were really fronting for them. Mrs. Boyer was the executive assistant to former Gov. Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller (remember where that name, Aldrich, came from? Nelson’s grandfather, Senator Aldrich, one of the founders of the Fed), and had served him in one capacity or another since 1944, just as her husband had served Laurence S. Rockefeller for many years before his death two years earlier.

Obvious inside job.   Sabotaged truck.   The punch line will probably be that the "4 million" dollar shipment was insured for the full amount but was actually $200 of tungsten with $1000 worth of gold plate.

Inside job. Who knows except the shipper and receiver whats in those boxes.

At 1,200$/oz, 4 million in gold translates to 3,333.33 oz, or 208.33 lbs. Take two guys to carry it while someone else pays the armored truck drivers for helping them out. Question: How do they crate gold bullion bars?

For sure, if it was the new improved tungsten gold standard, the insiders wanted the dodgy bars out of sight and out of mind, or hypothetically conversely, the price of tungsten has suddenly skyrocketed.

Inside job - has to be - no other explanation - unless - of course - one actually believes some crew of hapless highway bandio's, look for a few bags of quarters from a vending machine harvester simply lucked into it.

Now I am beginning to undertand the motivations of our Synogress's rut to move out of tungsten illumination products - ya can't cover the FED's or the Morgue's naked short gold positions without a hell of a lot of tungsten,

Big graphic ...

They put locks on the box.

I say just carry the box .. open later.

Weld the box to the truck

I say steal the truck ... open later

Don't they have little holes on armoured trucks to shoot guns from?

We're these "Guard Dog" secured trucks?

So  .. lets see .. did the highwaymen steal the gold, for real, or were they, instead, "ribbing" to hide the fact the so called gold was nothing more than a metallic "twinky", gold on the outside and a shitload of tungsten "filling" inside (juz like maw used to make)? Ya can never tell these days state financed theater of tragedy - we are all terror suspects and collateral fodder, visa vi the Diebold machines unfettered undocumented assessment of our political class employees entrusted with our authorazations - that they now use to fund homeland theater as tangible state [sponsored] "proofs", that Oceania's newest and meanest Emanuel Goldstein ever was - an dey ain't kidding - and you can take that to the bank.

Insurance claims are one way to rehypothecate gold - why didn't I think of that!!!!

The news story was sort of interesting but the add-on article about top gold heists was mostly bullshit.

There is no way that China had 6,700 tonnes of gold in 1937.  I would be surprised to learn they had even that much silver back then.  It was only 50 years earlier that China was impoverished by being forced to buy opium by British Jews.  China had been getting much of the British silver in exchange for silk, tea and china and Britain had no goods that Chinese were interested in.  They were forced to buy opium which was produced in India by Jews and pay in specie. A Jew owned British government even went to war with China when the Chinese authorities tried to stop the trade.

Speaking of Jews .... The 10 coins stolen from the mint had a value of $200 at the time.  Just because Jews stole them does not mean that the government acting improperly by seizing them.  The theft was $200 not 14 or so million.

And of course they mention the Nazi gold .....PUULLLEEEEZZZE.....

Good grief.... when does this bullshit get to be too much for the average person to swallow.

Even if Japan did, the war went on for 8 years after 1937.

So where did the gold go?  Well, logically it would go to cronies, and be spent in the war effort.

Getting rich honestly is hard enough.  Thats why billionaires tend to 'innovate' fraudulent ways to get (filthy) rich.  Like rehypothecating gold, or financing both sides in a conflict, or using 30-1 leverage and engaging in insider trading, or doing a triangular trade for rum, to trade for slaves, to grow sugar, to make rum

Or like in the Opium Wars, trading opium for precious metals, as mentioned...

Uh no....it's not always their fault.  In the two cases I pointed out they sure played the prominent role and were clearly instigators.  One case involved scamming a few gold coins.  The other case led to the addiction and subsequent deprivation of millions.  God knows how many perished over the flood of opium,  never mind the actual wars that took place when decent Chinese tried to resist.

I really don't know if it was a Jew who came up with the idea of forcing a nation to allow the open sale of opium to its citizens in order to address a balance of trade issue.  I do know that Jews made huge amounts off that trade.

The Nazi gold ......Good grief.....we are watching the US buy traitors to their respective nations all around the world. They are selling or giving their national heritage away for a little power.  Once the traitor has power, the gold disappears.  Nothing going on there, but; them ole Nazis....now thats a different story.

Entertaining, but once again "The ladder is leaning against the wrong wall", and thus guys like Dimon and Bankfine are laughing their butts off:

These examples are K-Garden stuff, compared to the Major League heists that their business are engaged in -- and the "best part" is that it's all legal.

I watched two dudes in India turn a cold coin into a necklace with little more than a propane burner and some small hand tools.  That's the beauty of precious metals.  Just melt it down and turn it into something else.

What other metals could you discern?

I refine Gold from scrap Karat Jewelry as well as Electronics.

The only way I can discern any other metals is by Chemical Assay.

If I can see another metal then it is Plated Crap.

Hopefully they will be stupid and not change the form of it.

I hope that they get caught and prosecuted.

I hate thieves,..especially Gold thieves.

If the form is changed and as a result is unidentifiable then it will be far too easy to sell.

Demand for Physical Gold is nearing all time highs...especially at these low prices. Far too many people want it.

I hope that none of that Stolen Gold ever makes it to me as I do not want the "benefit", rather the Spiritual Karma, of an ill gotten gain.

Lloyd Blankfein is held up by robbers. But when he hands them the tens of thousands of dollars he has on hand, they stare at it like he has just handed them a jar of warm sputum. "Get fucked!", they say. Then they demand his wedding ring, gold necklace and wristwatch.
As soon as they leave, he gets on the phone, screaming, "Sell! Sell it ALL! It's WORTHLESS! No one WANTS it!"
