$4 Million In Gold Bars Stolen In 11th Largest Heist In History

Tyler Durden's picture

Long-time Zero Hedge readers may remember the rather surreal moment towards the beginning of the long-running German tungsten/gold repatriation saga, when Bundesbank Executive Board member Andreas Dombret assured the NY Fed that Germany wasn’t afraid of Simon Gruber (or Goldfinger for that matter) “masterminding gold heists in U.S. vaults.”

Well, since it now appears Germany is all set to ramp up its repatriation efforts (see the NY Fed’s November monthly outflow numbers), Buba may want to reconsider its stance on the threat posed by ambitious bandits, as less than 24 hours ago, an estimated 4 million in gold bars were commandeered (on the side of I-95 no less), by gun wielding desperados.

From CBS:

North Carolina authorities and the FBI are investigating the theft of an estimated $4 million worth of gold allegedly stolen during an armed robbery along Interstate 95 on Sunday evening, CBS affiliate WRAL reports.

After mechanical problems with their truck, two armed guards who were traveling from Miami to Massachusetts with a shipment of silver and gold pulled over at mile marker 114 on the Interstate.

According to the station, the sheriff's office says the guards reported that three armed men in a white van approached them, ordered them to the ground, tied their hands behind their backs and forced them to walk into some nearby woods. Investigators, who responded to the scene shortly before 7 p.m., said the men then reportedly took several barrels of gold and left while the guards were in the woods.

While it’s not clear if the perpetrators here were in fact relatives of anyone killed by John McLane, what we do know is that this was no small feat. Here’s local affiliate WNCN: “...gold robberies of this magnitude are rare. The largest gold robbery in Florida, for example, was the $2.8 million stolen in 2012.”

A quick look back at last year’s ZH post chronicling the 15 greatest gold heists of all-time reveals that yesterday’s 6:50 p.m. robbery was in fact the 11th biggest gold bullion heist ever! Below, find the original infographic.

All of it.

What did you think fiat inconvertible paper was for?

Did you REALLY think that the Bretton-Woods "Gold-Standard" was a Gold-Standard?

It wasn't.

It was a promise, that maybe, if you were a member of their club and they liked you they *might* pay you in gold...if they felt like it.

When they didn't feel like it anymore they closed the Gold window.

Remember that.  A Gold-Exchange standard IS NOT A GOLD STANDARD BECAUSE THEY CAN ARBITRARILY REDEFINE THE EXCHANGE.

Long ago alchemists discovered that instead of trying to make gold it was easier to issue themselves permits to someone else's metal. And it was even more effective, as it enriched them while depriving competition of their hard-earned wealth. Every ounce stolen ended up being worth twice as much as an ounce extracted from the ground through hard labor.

A 400-ounce Gold bar is 8 in x 4 in x 2 in (200mm x 80mm x 40mm).

So, $4,000,000 in Gold is about 16 in x 8in x 4 in.

It would fit in a briefcase.

Here's the kicker.

It would weigh 210 pounds.

And then there is the strange case of the plundering of The third Reichs gold: http://www.amazon.com/Nazi-Gold-Greatest-Robbery-And-Aftermath/dp/031292... From Kirkus Reviews

A rather breathless account, first published in 1984 and updated for this edition, of what happened to the ``Nazi gold'' (and gold currency bonds, bank notes of various countries, coins, jewelry, paintings, and other goodies) that disappeared in the last days of the Third Reich. The immediate cause of its dispersal lay in a raid on Berlin on February 3, 1945 by nearly a thousand Flying Fortress bombers. The Reichsbank took 21 direct hits, and shortly thereafter the bulk of the gold reserves, weighing around 100 tons and requiring thirteen railway flat cars to transport them, were stored in a deep mine at Merkers, 200 miles southwest of Berlin. On April 4, this site was overrun by Patton's Third Army, which captured gold and currency worth some $315 million at 1945 prices, in addition to 400 tons of paintings, the 3,000-year-old Egyptian statuette of Queen Nefertiti, and two million books. Sayer and Botting (Hitlers Last General, not reviewed, etc.) deal with what remained. They estimate the overall total of funds missing or stolen at $433 million, worth nearly $4 billion today. That figure includes $3.6 billion in gold currency bonds seized by Red Army Intelligence, and quietly and efficiently marketed in later years (an intriguing episode unfortunately neglected here), and seven tons of gold from the German Foreign Office which the authors located in the Bank of England. A colorful crew of characters circle around or disappear with the remainder, but often Sayer and Botting get bogged down tracing two bars of gold here or voicing dark suspicions about what is being covered up by the US Occupation authorities there. Indeed, much of the latter part of their story deals less with Nazi gold than with the high living of occupation troops in Germany. Vivid investigative reporting is obscured by dust and cobwebs.

A measly 208 pounds - North Carolina was the Original Gold Rush ...

The first gold rush in the United States, following the discovery of a 17 pound (7.7 kg) gold nugget by 12-year old Conrad Reed in a creek at his father’s farm in 1799. The Reed Gold Mine, southwest of Georgeville in Cabarrus County, North Carolina produced about 50 thousand troy ounces (1.6 tonnes) of gold from lode and placer deposits ...

Placer means lying on the ground or in a streambed.  Easy pickin'  50,000 x $1200 is about 60000000 - a lot of fiat.

edit: According to local Boston newscasts, the gold was shipped from Miami to Bridgewater MA.,

http://www.wcvb.com/news/4-million-in-gold-stolen-from-truck-in-north-ca...

Other stories are to Attleboro MA.. So here is the skinny on this.  Attleboro has a jewelery manufacturer that makes gold and other chains etc.. This is not mentioned in the newscasts and I know a jewelery manufacturer that orders chain from them on occasion.

http://garlanchain.com

Now for the Bridgewater connection:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coins_'N_Things

Coins 'N Things, also known as CNT Inc.,[1] is a privately held, family-controlled business in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, that was established as a retail shop for coin collectors and is now the largestwholesale vendor of gold in the United States.

Coins 'N Things was started in 1973 by Louis Oliari, an engineer and coin collector. His teenaged son Mark had also become deeply engaged in coin collecting, and the father thought that if he indulged his son's hobby interest by operating a small storefront coin trading shop, Mark would eventually "get bored" with the hobby and "get [it] out of [his] system.” However, after high school, Mark Oliari went to work in the business full-time and later his father left his corporate job to join him.[2]

Some time after both Oliaris had started working in the business full-time, Coins ’N Things entered the wholesale metals market. While Louis Oliari preferred the retail coin business, Mark Oliari enjoyed trading gold with investorsjewelers, and businesses that needed gold as a raw material.[2] As the wholesale business grew, it began to attain the reputation and financial stature needed to be a leader in that industry. In 2002, the United States Mint approved Coins 'N Things to become one of 11 businesses worldwide authorized to buy American Eagle silver bullion coins for distribution; at that time, qualifications for that authorization included a substantial retail customer base and net worth of at least $5 million.[3]

Chances are its 10x the reported amount - at least AND its an inside job.

No such thing as coincidence that two things happened - the truck breaks down and three co-operators show up with a plan.

The chances of keeping this a secret are: 1/5[sqr] * 1/[number of girl friends][cube root]

In this age of archived electronic surveillance there are 5 years of meta data floating around to connect these guys and where the gold is now.

The only question is will the federal recovery team actually report the goods recovered or put in in the back of their van for a later split.

Everyone laughs about gold but there really is a fever that overcomes someone that spends time close to that metal and handles it.

This reminds me of this guy, back in the days when marijuana possession could cost you some serious time, told me how he and his girlfriend were stopped at the border, going into Canada.  They were driving a VW bug and the border patrol took the whole car apart and everything in it.  At the end, they found nothing.  So, after getting the car and everything in it put back, the border partrol asked him, "Okay, where was it?" and he replied, "Behind the head light."

So, I asked him, "Well, where was it?"

And he said, "It was wrapped in tin foil inside a peanut butter jar.  The border patrol held it in their hand, and then put it back."

Okay so it wasn't gold.  As we used to say, "Times of dope will get you through times of no money, better than times of money will get you through times of no dope."

The web site of the trucking/courier company "Transvalue" is not too comforting. They say that everything is insured up to $100 million dollars but forget to say who the insurance is placed with. On the world map on their website are places all over the world that are ostensibly their offices, yet when you click on a location nothing comes up. Supposedly they have a place next to the Miami International Airport, but no external view of the building, no address of the building, just a phone number and email.

OK, I will give JM Bullion a shot.  I just received my order from SD bullion.  I had some issues with them at first but they have some pretty cool stuff.  Most of what I received was very good and this one is already legend in my collection.  That coin is fucking awesome and I have number 378 so there are not many out there.  I paid more than I should have but it is nice and it is reverse proof on the obverse.  Nice strike.  SD Bullion does deliver eventually.  I got a chuckle out of the fact that the boxes came labeled as SD Bearings Supply Inc.  That is a good one.LOL

That seemed OK with JM Bullion.  I have another 32.5 ounces of Ag on the way.  I had to add in three 1/2 lb bars of copper for good measure.  I cannot say that I have ever purchased bullion copper before but now I can.  I simply have to see copper bars because I have never seen them before.  It's not about getting a good deal on copper it is just that it belongs with any PM collection although seperated by space.

Have you noticed that I keep buying?  I never buy too much at a time.  I will buy more all of the way down but we are pretty much down now.  The time to buy is when everyone else shuns.  I will just wait on the leverage and I will last longer than you paper fiends will.  Fighting someone with no debt is risky.  Do you want to wait ten years?  And for you paper fiends, do you know who the copper bars are for?  Those are gifts for my friends who have been hoarding 1981 and prior US pennies all of these years.  How about a six pack of good beer and a copper bullion bar while NOT at the bar?  Most people would not understand.  We do.

Cool stuff but don't buy copper bars.  Buy copper pipe from the local hardware store.  Much cheaper and easier to sell.

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 07:50 | 5848939 RabbitChow

Copper pipe is not copper.  Technically it's called 'red brass' and it is an alloy that is mostly copper with zinc and other metals added.  It's more tradeable (or userful) as pipe but it isn't copper.

Kinda like the gold in Ft. Knox is only 90% pure -- not up to international standards for trading.

Miami.. I bet the guards were in on it. What are the chances they pull over at a random stop and some bandidos are there. They probably don't know any math.

Okay, it's not even a news item.  Turns out the truck broke down, the po-lease stopped by and asked them what they were doing there.  One of the questions was, Do you have any large sums of money in the truck?  The guards said yes, which was the wrong answer, and the po-lease had to seize it all under civil asset forfeiture, claiming it was only going to be used in the drug trade.  Next time, carry a cashier's check!

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 02:27 | 5848639 Kelley

In cases like this the guards need to be questioned thoroughly and separately to see if their descriptions about what happened are similar.

If there are big differences, that's a red flag.

They break down and thugs just happene to be able to stop and tie up the guards?

Seriously, this is a decent backpack full, that's it. It's ~ 200 lbs of gold.  It would fit in a checked bag at the airport.  I once orderd 100K of silver for work and was disapointed to see the little bitty crate it came in.  Ever since then, I've had an appreciation of how easy the theft of large amounts of precious metal is.

I expect a lot more of these 'heists'.

I don't know that it is so, but it occurs to me it would be very easy to use a "heist" while in transit to explain why there was no gold in someone's account.

I am suggesting that there might have been no gold in the truck in the first place, and the "heist" was only cover for the real theft...which occurred some time previously.

I am thinking these were small casks supposedly filled with gold and silver coins but probably held zinc pennies, if that. Such an obviously transparent scam. Even the mouth breathing gomers in the NC county where it happened don't believe it.
