How To Reach Nasdaq 5000 In The New Paranormal

Tyler Durden's picture

In November we exposed the market's ability to levitate magically when exchanges - most notably CBOE - break. Today we get another glimpse of the new paranormal. While the official CBOE site is not exposing it, numerous traders noted that CBOE options data was not being disseminated from around the open to shortly after 1030ET this morning. That 'coincidentally' occurred as NASDAQ ramped almopst unabated to 5000 (as VIX was clubbed from 13.9 to 13.1)...

Reports from traders about lack of options data being disseminated to their trading platforms coincided perfectly with the ramp in Nasdaq and plunge in VIX...

CBOE seems unwilling to admit that the issues started earlier...

Welcome to the new paranormal.

Me too, comrade doctor.

(I'm practicing.  'Comrade' doesn't flow off the tongue easily at first, but with some practice, it almost feels comfortable now).

Abe had to get his order in at a good price, therefore the market had to break.

I've been wondering; when the companies have bought back all their stock and the CBs have purchased every last bond will the 'market' value of said instruments be zero or infinity?

I'm thinking the latter.

I think that when you subidize something. you get more of it.  The Fed can't buy it all, even with a printing press.  More will just show up.  I would consider starting a shell company just to take out debt and pay myself a fat salary.

No, there will always be at least one share of stock for sail.  Problem is that 1 Trillion dollars will be chasing it.  There might be just a little bit of a supply demand imbalance.

What this, and other market breaks, tells me is that the Fed/Treasury/Banker complex is actually unable to fight the market.  They are being overwhelmed or unwilling to commit the amount of money it would take to directly stand in front of the exit door.  They need to shut the door and wait for all the beating and screaming to stop before they can open it again.  I don't think that works well when the door is on a pressure cooker.

Putin is retreating.

Russia could be on the verge of a Civil War here.

Crazy to be in commodities with interest rates this low and falling evsrywhere save Russia, Turkey and Brazil.

Still think rates on treasuries are going to plunge here...there's always a Big Short in that asset class.

War porn: I did some rough calculations on that. Russian T-90 tanks can be in Kiev in 6 hours. The T95's in 4 hours.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem given the relative strengths of Russia's air force of around 3,400 aircraft to Ukraine's air force of around 220 aircraft...

While I embrace your sentiment, volume is STILL so pathetically low that another machine rebound isn't unthinkable, like last week's afternoon magic balloons against shorter technicals .  The 12:30 candles had suspiciously high volume and big ol' wicks, so it's either the standard VWAP special to rise and re-dump after 1:30, or a more sinister scaling in for a later double-touch.

If a $25. loaf of bread indicates something about the inflation of food prices, then a 18,000 point DJIA must be saying something about the inflation of investment capital.
