Russia Warns NATO: Any Threat In Ukraine Will See Military Response

Tyler Durden's picture

As Russia announces the expansion of its Navy by 50 vessels this year, including two new nuclear-powered submarines and an aircraft carrier, it appears NATO's sabre-rattling has drawn a response/threat/warning. Following British plans to send military 'advisers' into Ukraine (which NATO has stated are not confirmed), TASS reports, Russia's NATO envoy, Alexander Grushko, warns Russia will take all measures against possible NATO threat in Ukraine, adding that Russia’s response may include military measures.

As TASS reports,

NATO has taken no decisions on sending British or any other instructors to Ukraine, Russia’s Ambassador to the North Atlantic Alliance Alexander Grushko said on Monday.

"NATO has taken no decisions on sending instructors," he told the Rossiya 24 television channel. "NATO is implementing the decisions that were taken at the political level at the Wales summit in September 2014."

Moscow will take all measures, including military-technical, to neutralize possible threat from NATO presence in Ukraine, he added.

*  *  *

And this is happening as Russia dramatically expands its military forces. As The Moscow Times reports,

The Russian navy will receive 50 vessels of various sizes and classes this year, navy Chief Admiral Viktor Chirkov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency on Monday.

The new boats are part of a rearmament program begun under President Vladimir Putin that aims to provide Russia with a navy capable of operating far away from home — a capability lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union — by 2050. Russia's navy today is largely relegated to a coastal defense role.

"The period of stagnation in the development of our potential has long since passed," Chirkov said.

*  *  *

And here is The West's defence...

*  *  *

Of course all this military machismo comes as Russia and Ukraine hold emergency talks in Brussels over gas supply amid imminent cutoff threats for non-payment. As AP reports,

Russia and Ukraine's energy ministers are holding emergency talks after the Russian gas supplier said it would cut off deliveries to the war-torn country as soon as Tuesday if it does not get new payments.

The European Union, which is mediating the talks in Brussels hoping to keep gas flowing despite the dispute, imports around 40 per cent of its gas from Russia, half through conflict-torn Ukraine.

Kyiv and Moscow have fought out several gas price wars over the past years and concerns are mounting that any fresh cuts could again hit European supplies.

Cash-strapped Ukraine is struggling to buy time and made a $15 million payment last week, but Moscow says that will cover only a day's worth of gas, leaving a potential cutoff looming Tuesday.

Arriving for talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Demchyshyn and the European Union's energy chief Maros Sefcovic, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak acknowledged the "need to resume an energy dialogue."

Russia has said that it will cut supplies unless Kyiv pre-pays for gas it wants to use. Ukraine, meanwhile, accuses Russia of failing to abide by its contractual obligations.

Complicating the dispute are deliveries to Ukraine's rebel-held east, where fighting between Kyiv's forces and Russia-backed rebels has killed nearly 5,800 people.

Kyiv cut gas supplies to rebel-held areas last week, prompting Russia to pump gas there directly. Russia said those deliveries should be counted in gas exports to Ukraine.

I will add that it was not these nations that reached out to the US in 2012.  Indeed, it was the US who sought to reverse decades of ignoring SE Asia with the so-called "pivot to Asia."  The US could not send enough people or money to Asia to strike military and "humanitarian" deals.

It is convenient, however, for the US to continue to assert that these nations begged the US to come protect them.  Just about anything the US says or does is always convenient for the US.

You'll have to take your assertions up with the foreign affairs departments of the respective States of South East Asia, I doubt they will see it that way. You are again simply trying to substitute Chinese wrongdoing with a USA boogieman, which has done nothing.

As for the 'pivot' one might go so far as to ask why the US went to the trouble of creating an illusion that the bulk of US expeditionary forces would be concentrating in the Asia-Pacific.

Mon, 03/02/2015 - 22:43 | 5848112 suteibu

There  is no reason to ask or wonder why the pivot.  The US has come right out and declared its plan to constrain China's economic, diplomatic, and military development.  The Chinese have reacted with restraint to what has, in the past among other nations, been considered a policy of aggression if not a declaration of war.

As for you, again either paid to spout this garbage or worse and more dangerous, a true believer.

"... The US has come right out and declared its plan to constrain China's economic, diplomatic, and military development. ..."

Are you mad?

MILITARY:

You better believe the US will counter Chinese military developments! Why the hell wouldn't they?! Are you mad? Grow up on Alpha Centauri or something? Don't know how the real world works? the US is going to nail the fuck out of the Chinese military, if it ever has to, and don't you ever forget it. Listen closely. China will not be getting cut ANY military slack - ever! Is that completely clear? I can not believe the fucking nerve of you to even expect that to ever be otherwise. Grow up!

TRADE:

The US has been doing all it can to build economic links and mutual investment with China. How the hell do you think Apple production moved to China? Most favored trading status is how!  So you're talking complete crap there. The US definitely did not want China isolated.

The recent relative isolation of China via a lack of free trade agreement with the US, and more recent exclusion from the Trans-Pacific Partnership is the inevitable result of China threatening high-intensity combat attacks on Japan, who is the US's biggest military alliance partner in the Pacific Basin!

What did you think was going to happen?! Business as usual?! GET REAL PAL!

China was threatening a war of territorial conquest against Japan. In other words, China made a spectacularly vast diplomatic error in relations with the US and Japan, and it can not be swept aside, as though it didn't happen. This is why you do not give the US an excuse! But China gave them far more than an excuse, it gave them a clear motive to act.

So now trade and investment links must be restructured around the very real possibility of Chinese military action against the US Pacific Alliance. Is that perfectly clear? Is there something you don't understand? Yes, China's trade and investment relations with the west will suffer. Why the hell would you ever think that wouldn't have been the outcome?

DIPLOMACY:

The US has engaged with China on all diplomatic levels and on all topics. The US has not prevented China from doing anything it needs to diplomatically. How could it?

The Chinese just signed a finalized Free Trade Agreement and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Australia last November, fer Krist's sake!

Did the US interfere? NO!

Could it have? YES!

Would it have worked? Most probably not.

So how the fuck is the US interfering in China's diplomatic initiatives given China now has a major Comprehensive Strategic Relationship with Australia, and Australia is a MAJOR US military ally, with a free trade agreement with the USA?

In other words, the door has been left open to China to cut the shit. To move past the Issue with Japan and to resolve territorial claims with SEA. China can have a fantastic open relationship with the West, or it can blow its own foot off. It is Beijing's choice.

And frankly, the views that you've been putting are very unlike the views of the Chinese Premier Xi Jin Ping, as expressed in Australia, last November. He gave many speeches in Australia during that week, and they were extremely warm, friendly, very constructive and gracious. You should read what he said in them. He wants a relationship with the West like the one that Japan has with the West. Or at least he clearly indicated that, at that time.

I seriously doubt that you know what you're talking about with regard to these topics.

And yes, I am freely speaking my own words, and it is how I see things.

And I'm thoroughly reconciled with the possibility that you may disagree - and I'm OK with that.

China does not want the same relationship Japan has with the US.  Xi, nor any other Chinese, would ever allow US troops stationed on Chinese territories.  For that matter, the average Japanese is not too keen about it either, especially in Okinawa.

Otherwise, you can't have it both ways; either China is a threat to the rest of Asia as the US spouts at every chance or China, led by Xi, is "extremely warm, friendly, constructive and gracious."

I agree with Xi's words.  China seeks its own interests as it should.  Sadly for the US, China achieving those interests with other nations in Asia is not good for American interests. Perhaps part of the deal to allow the China/Australia FTA was the US military base which was not received well by others in SE Asia.

Look at Japan in 2009 when Hatoyama sought, under the guidance of Ozawa and according to his blueprint, a more equal relationship with both the US and China which meant diplomatic and economic cooperation and warming with the Chinese and a change in the US/Japan alliance.  For that move, which would have been highly beneficial for China, Japan, and the rest of Asia, Hatoyama got snubbed by Obama, his surrogates in the American press, US State and Defense Dept personnel in Japan and even the US hands in the Japanese bureaucracy.  He was forced to resign, not because he pushed this agenda (indeed, he campaigned and won on the agenda) but because the US refused to allow him to complete the agenda.

Had he been successful, there would not have been an issue with the Senkaku Islands (they were discussing joint development of the seas surrounding the islands until Hatoyama left office), there would be fewer US troops in Japan, nationalism on both sides of the Sea of Japan would not have flared as they have and Japan would not have growing issues with its other East Asian neighbors.

This is the way that the US deals with nations not toeing the US line.  China sees this and remembers what the US has done in Asia and specifically to China in the past.  Whatever relationship China and the US have will always be based on a lack of trust by the Chinese.  To be sure, China wants to get along, but they will not be forced into the US fold ever again.

As for the US stopping China from developing its economy and military, that has yet to be played out and the US has now forced China into an economic and security alliance with a nuclear superpower.  I don't doubt that there are many American "leaders" who are crazy enough (true believers) to start a war in Asia but, hopefully, that will not happen.

"Perhaps part of the deal to allow the China/Australia FTA was the US military base which was not received well by others in SE Asia."

A quick reply, I need to leave this discussion at this point.

(1) There are zero US military bases in Australia. There will not be US bases in Australia. We are not a former conquered and occupied country like Japan. The US forces are accommodated and integrated within existing Australian military bases under our Laws and under Australian control. China should should be very clear about that.

(2) Those US forces were not a deciding factor in the FTA with China in my view (I hope I under stood your point properly here). It is more practical that that. Australia already had FTA's with US, Japan and South Korea - China's major market competitors. They were going to be able to obtain Australian energy and minerals far cheaper than China could. Consequently the moment Japan made an FTA with Australia it was imperative that China do the same, in order to compete equally to obtain industrial inputs, at the same prices. Plus Japan would have been able to sell goods into Australia a lot cheaper than previously, and undercut Chinese products. This is what India also will now do, for the same competitiveness reasons.

Sorry to leave it there, I did enjoy this discussion, regardless of the spats.

Thank you suteibu.

They Chinese aren't going to do anything like that, they have to live in this neighborhood, and believe it or not, in this neck if the woods, the Chinese are the minority, not the majority. They will only get involved in combat if US action in the ME against Assad and Iran causes Iran to close the Persian Gulf. Then they'd go completely apeshit at the US and Israel, threaten to eliminate them, and anyone else who got in the way. Nothing else threatens China's vital interests enough to get them worked up. The Vietnam border thing is because China is trying to defacto annex Vietnamese claimed territory in the South China Sea and Vietnam is just about ready to start sinking their ships if they don't knock it off and fuck off. Vietnam is not going to take shit from China here, and for sure its SEA neighbors also want China to fuck off, and will combine against them.

No real threat from NATO. Can't do much harm with a painted broomstick. The real threat is the attempted creation of an EU wide "buyers cartel" to force Russia to sell gas for an EU offered price. EU still pissed about southstream. Crimea and turkey assures Russian gas will not be landlocked.

Those neighboring countries were until fairly recently part of the same country as Russia. So yeah, you'd expect Russia to have an interest in those places.
So when their leaderships poke the bear in the eye repeatedly and encourage NATO to do the same, you can probably expect a less-than-friendly response from Russia.
NATO could have ensured their safety without challenging Russia's obvious interests in the region.
But it was never about securing those countries. It was all about forcing NATO right up to the Russian border, even if it meant war in those countries.

Don't let your Putin-hatred blind you to the realities of the situation. Hate the man if you want, but Russia has NOT been the aggressor here. It has been US, using those countries as proxies to keep needling the Russians in an indirect way. Because for the neocons, the Cold War never ended, and never will. Because it was simply too lucrative.

What happened to our promised peace-dividend? You didn't think they'd ever let us have it, did you?

It's not about going to ACTUAL war. It's really about whipping up the domestic populations of each so as to permit a new "Cold War".

Cold War is SO much better than Hot War! Hot War chews up resources...Cold War allows for resources to be used arming-up. Gives a huge boost to those moribund domestic economies and gets those idled factories up and running again...

Or so the theory goes. I'm certain both sides have this in their minds...it's just a question of how to contain it so it always stays 'cold'. One false move, and all your economic gains get blown up, because all that shit is expensive.

You want to MAKE the stuff and stash it somewhere, not have to USE it.

This could be another Vietnam. There 600 'advisors' eventually mushroomed into 500,000 troops. The awfull thing is that political advisors sent by Kennedy etc to Vietnam to assess the situation on the ground more often than not reported the whole thing was pointless given the corruption of the S Vietnamese regime, that lack of will to fight of the S Vietnamese population and the determination of the N Vietnamese to drive out the imeprialists. Kennedy and his successors didn't have the guts to cut their losses for reasons of pure domestic politics. Thousands of US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese died because of the vanity and corruption of US and Vietnamese politicians. The parallels to the Ukrainbe situation are too close to bear.

Kyiv cut gas supplies to rebel-held areas last week, prompting Russia to pump gas there directly. Russia said those deliveries should be counted in gas exports to Ukraine.

Brilliant! In that way, the Donbas will be the only part of the country formerly known as Ukraine (t.c.f.k.a.u.) to receive gas paid for by Kyiv, ultimately in Poroshenko chocolate bars.

Cool...so if NATO establishes a presence in Ukraine, Putin will take his 25 divisions back home, and finally, the tee-totaller will start drinking.

I'm just wondering where he'd get more soldiers, considering many are already leaving to the EU, many are being hidden by ther famiies (like during Afghanistan), and most Russians would never support a conflict with Ukraine.

Putin knows ONE thing: the US has developed, tested, deployed and refined one thing that USSR/modern Russia has not been able to: Kill Satellites.

What anybody's capabilities will be in 2050 or even 2030 are irrelevant - except perhaps as a warning to the Empire that they can't win.  If we don't get past this crisis by then we're all toast.

It's clear that the Empire is not going to collapse without war.  Th question is, can it be contained and parried sufficiently to give it time to strangle on its own internal contradictions and the vast arc of little wars it's embroiling itself in to expire without starting a global thermonuclear holocaust.

If so, our species gets one more chance to get it right and put an end to war.

If not, all our hopes and dreams for our children and grandchildren and generations to come will have been in vain.

This is coming to a head now, and will be resolved in the next decade if not sooner.
