Buffett On Europe: Germany Must Stop Greek Dog Peeing On Its Carpet

Tyler Durden's picture

Not to be outdone by his partner Charlie Munger (who offended many with his comments that "gold is a great thing to sew onto your garments if you're a Jewish family in Vienna in 1939,"), Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett decides to take on Europe (and The Big Lebowski), and particularly the Greeks in today's 'perhaps it's time to just STFU' moment. Responding to questions about Europe's future, Buffett compares Greece to a "dog peeing on the carpet" of Europe, suggesting Germany stop "rewarding behavior you want to get rid of."

Buffett explains...

*  *  *

Quick question - just how far does one go to 'punish' the peeing dog before Animal Cruelty is called?

Warren's dad Congressman Howard Buffett was a tireless fighter for a gold money system (without central banking).

He recognized the dangers of bubbles and crashes caused by 'flexible' money systems.

Congressman Buffet wrote the following in a letter to Murray Rothbard:

“... Somewhere I had read that you wrote a book on the “Panic of 1819?. If this is correct, I would like to know where I can buy a copy of it. I have a son who is a particularly avid reader of books about panics and similar phenomenon. I would like to present him with the book referred to. ...”

http://csinvesting.org/2012/05/19/warren-buffetts-father-tried-to-teach-him-about-abct-the-panic-of-1819/

The Panic of 1819 was caused by the policies of the Second Bank of the United States (a central bank).

Really hard to blow a bubble and start a panic with a proper gold money system.

Simpler. Probably some of his money is at risk, if the Greek government with their hole without bottom is not following the treaties.

These international hyenas would not care at all, if it was German taxpayer money - when it's their money, they immediately lose their friendly mask and become extremists.

Warren buffet made his money fucking so many people its not funny. I interviewd with a company today and when they told me he owned large shares of stock in it I immediatly starting reading the companies contracts and the fucking I just knew was there was hidden b not refering to it at all then the manager said that the company would never screw an agent and I laughed out loud and said only so many times that you can kick a dog and treat it badly before the dog bites and then unloaded on his sorry ass. American income life was the company and what a contract beware all you insurance agents. Allways read your contracts especially if buffet is involved

Greek politicians put their country in a subserviant position vis-a-vis the other players in the EU by accepting a central currency run by a bank in Frankfurt, essentially becoming a small, poor German province. If they want to stay in the central currency then they should shed any illusions that they matter any more than the former East Germans did for their central government. Buffet pointed out the obvious and he goes on to say that other than accept being wagged they can request a hand-out. That's the only options inside Germany, there's no sugar-coating that. He may be a douchebag but he nailed it.

Your comment is actually worse than Buffet's and unnecessarily spiteful.I listened to the video and it sounds like the old man simply chose a poor way to say that bad behavior should not be rewarded.

Either way, get ready for this here in America. Did you read the story about the gov't employee who looks at porn 6 hours a day and can't be fired? Get everyone dependent on .gov and "train" them like this for 35 years.....the end result will be worse than what the Greeks are today. You can already see it happening.

Germany has profited greatly from the Euro arrangement, which locked the southern Eruopean nations into a German exports noose.  Germany went on an export binge with her ultra-competitive manufacturing and high-tech industries, far out-competing most others in Europe.  Germany's service, construction, and military equipment industries also ran large trade surpluses with the states on Europe's periphery (including those now referred to as the "PIIGS").  Normally. a country running large trade surpluses will see its currency rise in value as a result, and thus lose competitiveness, but importing nations can soften the effects of their trade-balance  deficits by devaluing their currencies or taking other trade-protection measures.  Those inside the Euro zone could not take such measures, being locked into the same currency and the EU trade treaties.

Being in the Euro zone also helped camouflage Germany's huge trade and current-account surpluses with non-Euro nations.  Germany cleaned up.

At the same time, losing control over their currencies meant that lenders from other Euro countries could buy sovereign bonds from, or lend to the banks or other entities in the PIIGS without having to bear any currency-depreciation risk.  All debts and bonds were denominated in the Euro.  French, German, and Italian banks went on a lending binge to the PIIGS, enjoying the lack of currency risk and the implied guarantee of the ECB that their loans would be protected from sovereign default.

Come 2010, Europe caught contagion from the 2008 US financial meltdown, and the lending banks were faced with default on everything they held from the PIIGS.  The Troika rescued the lending banks by buying up the bad debts, and putting all liability on the PIIGS taxpayers, - all debt including that owed by private borrowers, not just sovereign borrowers- and imposed austerity budgeting to prioritize debt repayment.  Italy was an exception.

It has been clear for years now that the PIIGS cannot ever pay off their debts. It is also coming clear that Italy and France are in similar straits.  Voter revolt and debt repudiation are rising risks.  Right-wing politicians in Spain and Portugal fear any success by Syriza in Greece will embolden their left-wing opponents.

Syriza cannot get far right now with its attempt to loosen the austerity strait-jacket, because Greece is pennies away from flat broke.  Germany and the Troika have faced down Syriza's attempt to get some wiggle room.

Now that Germany's banks are safe, Germany has felt safe in refusing to entertain any further help for the PIIGS.  But the PIIGS economies are in deep depression and present a strong danger to the whole Euro/EU project.

All the Euro states are roped together by the Fiscal Stability Treaty, by which each has guaranteed the debts of all the others.  The danger is that if one defaults, the others will be faced with a cascade of defaults as the debt bomb ascends the ladder of fewer and fewer remaining debtors.  We have already seen the Fiscal Stability Treaty in play in the discussions this week about a further bailout for Greece - bankrupt Spain and Portugal, and every other Eoro country, being lined up to contribute to another bailout fund.

The ECB's new QE fund may soon come into play in bailing out all and sundry.  The Austrian Hypo bank debts which Austria and one of its sub-states guaranteed may issue bonds to the ECB to cover this, if Draghi goes along.

But for any one to say that Germany should just discard Greece is to overlook (1) the overwhelming beneifts of the Euro to Germany, which may well be lost if Grexit leads to further exits or collapse of the Euro; (2) how Germany profited from the debts taken on by the Greeks; (3) the fact that if Greece is expelled from the Euro or the EU it will have no option but to default on its Euro debts; and (4) the fact that Germany remains in the Fiscal Stability Treaty and casting off Greece does not relieve Germany of liability for Greece's debts.

Being very lazy I always liked the idea of being an investor, using Capital to ride on the back of others who do all the hard work.

It puts you on the right side of the trickle up effect:

a) Those with excess capital invest it and collect interest and rent.

b) Those with insufficient capital borrow money and pay interest and rent.

It used to be quite easy in the early days, but now everyone wants to be an investor and no one wants to do anything useful. For every person doing something constructive, they have ten investors riding on their backs.

Anyway, so far I have had 50 years at Berkshire without a single day of hard work producing anything useful. I just use Capital to ride on the backs of others that do all the work.

Can’t complain,

What did he mean "if you have a problem you want to get rid of" - What does he think the 'end game' is?

The problem arose in the late 70's early 80's, when Corporations started sending all their work to the Far East, for bigger profits. Draining the 'pool' at home, the 'dollar' like the euro, doesn't work in such a mixed bag, even in the states there are States, who contribute to states who don't have any work. Look what your farming out for profit has done to Detroit? To name one.

I would propose that corporations who want to 'manufacture' in a country should register in that country and pay tax there, we should also charge to 'import' there products. The TTIP is one huge Corporate power grab, designed to suit corporates and enslave workers, which is why EU insist on Free Movement, so there's a constant supply of cheap labour! The people need to see what's going on and HELP THEMSELVES!

Look at TATA, just built a nice new plant in China, turning out Jaguars and Range Rovers, for half the cost of UK? With TTIP, because China are in the TPPA, which are all linked, join one join them all, he will be able to sell his CHEAP Chinese made models on the USA market, where does that leave UK workers?............BEGGING, they will work for less, driving profits up! (no pun intended)
