In "Unprecedented Move" Nobel Peace Prize Chairman Demoted For Decision To Give Obama 2009 Award

Tyler Durden's picture

Back in 2009, just months after his swearing in, president Barack Obama was crowned with an unexpected glory: he won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 due to "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." Back then there was little indication that just a few years after his crowning achievement of "ending the war" in and returning US troops from Iraq, he would send US troops right back in Iraq for the 3rd US invasion of the country in three decades, but also send out US troops across the globe, and launch the second cold war, pushing the world to the brink of another "large scale war." Those who wish to read Obama's teleprompted and ghostwritten acceptance "speech can do so here.

At the time the White House, and the fawning media, was delighted by this crowning, if premature, achievement of the progressive president.

Which is why don't expect much coverage of the inevitable aftermath: earlier today, in what France24 dubbed an "in an unprecedented move", the controversial head of Norway's Nobel Peace Prize committee was removed Tuesday and demoted to the rank of mere member.

Thorbjoern Jagland, a former Norwegian premier, drew criticism after becoming committee chairman in 2009 for awarding the prestigious Nobel to newly elected US President Barack Obama. He will be replaced by current Deputy Chair Kaci Kullmann Five.

More from AP:

The Nobel Peace Prize awarding Norwegian Nobel Committee on Tuesday elected a new chairman to replace Thorbjoern Jagland, whose six-year tenure has been lined with controversies.

Jagland will remain a member of the voting panel but was a contentious leader, attracting criticism for his dual role as committee chairman and head of the European Council when the prize was awarded to the European Union in 2012. His leadership also was clouded by the decision to give the prize to Barack Obama in 2009 after he had just been elected president, and the 2010 prize to the jailed dissident Liu Xiabo drew fury from China.

The former labor politician was replaced by the panel's deputy chairman, Kaci Kullmann Five, a former conservative party leader. She denied that Jagland's ousting had anything to do with pressure from China, which froze diplomatic ties to Norway after the 2010 award.

She did not deny that his ousting had anything to do with Obama who has since the aware become a neo-con warhawk, who has put some of the most bloodthirsty republicans to shame, and whose actions (and lack thereof) have led to not only global conflict intensity spiking To a 7-year high, but have generated untold riches to the shareholders of the military industrial complex.

If the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee really wants to correct the wrong and fix their tarnished image they should have the balls to strip Obozo of the prize. Change the records officially and take it away from him.

But they're Euroweenies. Wussies.

Only took six years for people to start understanding Obama is a liar and a fraud.  He is the Manchurian Candidate.  And he fucks over his friends twice as bad as his enemies.

He's exactly the kind of person who gets a lot of people killed while espousing the best of intentions.  Whatever the word is for an anti-leader, that's him.

Agreed with many others- strip him of the prize.  Obama is well overdue for some public shaming.  Not that he'll care, but we will.

(FYI- Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939, but he didn't win it.)

Setting aside the fact that Mr prez, and not as quite as petite as vanity self convinces, Mrs Prez, both got drummed out of the bar for some nassity thing I ain't gonna bother to chase down.

But that is a plus for getting the "piece [of the action] prize" in our moment. Recalling the republocarat campaign. Dr Paul was kicking ass every place that had a paper vote, except those polls, like in Nevada, where big boxes of  stuff were secreted away out the back alley door. Thinking that when the inner girl of Juulie Giggiliani made its way into the hearts of the 12 or so Americans that actually watched the debate. `Membering the "Cain" was losing his ass. Was down to pocket change, or what ever he could shake out of his prospective Mrs Prez, and Coors Beer Heiress, piggy bank.Carrying his own bags, booking his own flights and catching red eye flights all by his lumped face lonesome. Look back - how did that guy go from that to the Rebublocrat nominee.

Now, a dude name Adam Paul Laxalt is running for another pretense of an AG in Nevada. Adam is the grandson of the mafias top  and bestest bunz-up-and-kneeling tug job queen and onetime sometime NV Governor and Senator. Paul Laxalt, who spread his cloaca and worked with all the "Community Relations" departments of all the pre Disney era mob controlled casino ville USA! Bush and Bushes sons, cocaine cowboy real estate attorney, shadowy land purchasing and profitable cattle futures trader, ole  Rhino Thighs Hilary is following her artificially black dress inseminating cum fountain of her other half-wit, Slick Dick Willey. Rumor has it the kid will be a political player. We no have a political system whereby we employ public servants based an poll, WE NOW HAVE A SELF ANOINTED POLITICAL PRIMO GENESIS INDUSTRY that manufactures the royal blood lines of America's "too exceptional for our own good", nobility.

Despite the fact bloodied hands, a CV filled to brim with aborted fried human fetuses from drone shat burning phosphor  uterine wall "scrapper" our prez, whatever you think you think of "it", forgot the goals of the UN, forgot the UN's marketing plan, ya see? Israel is a loss leader for multi-regional sales. US left the pacific rim-job and the low margin napalm served genocide of Asian brownies,  cause war in the middle east offered so much more of what the forever wars dream. Not only would global commons linit tithings for genocide armaments, they would pay for carbon at 3 times the fair market value! Lot more territory - easy to justify - much easier than spending 20 years pretending to win war to colonize some patch of low resource  real estate about the size of florida and an enemy that wore pajama's as a uniform and fired back with homemade zip guns. No planes. No missiles. Can't pich BEX like that to anybody for more than 25 years max.

The UN is an ongoing open air market for weapons sales - that's all it is. And our Prez, who be just too sissy to be a "real" pimp,  forgot the fucking tenants of the marketing plan that required Israel as a loss leader, an incubator to bait jew hate, or Islamic hate (take your pick), and regional war or whatever - it don't fucking matter, as long as Oceania gets it's daily lame-streamed banded Emanuel Goldstien dose, a mloss leader, ya know, like diapers for baby poo poo, ya know - a shit bag - tagged at or blelow costs to induce shoppers to go to market, it's something to get the most buyers, at lowest cost, in the store cruising the isles. When Mr. Prez said he would shoot down IAF planes attacking Iran, when the Prez did not attend Nutcakeyahoo's speech, converse to, to be sure, onetimes Ms Heinz, now a Kerry cow, and multi-billionaire extraordinaire bitch ZAQ (zionista american queen as opposed to zap, or, zionista zmerican princess) to the max, dry tongue farked Johnny boy's ear juz-z'nuff to get him into the miwday of Nuttty-Net-an-Yahoo's speech carnival:

When our Mr Diebold Puppet Prez did that shit, it be about time to smack his sissy wanna be pimp ass hands and take the blood stained Piece [of the Action] Prize back.

Now for the chorus:

The Prince of Piece Prizes

A real American

THe Price of Piece Prize

I don't even know how that works, at least capitalists say they are about making a profit outright with no BS or they'll stay home, they don't hoodwink farmers & laborers into working harder for "Mother Russia" or oligarchs or the state, they do it for themselves, their families, self interest.

And self interest is not greed.

I agree with you to a point.  Government's legitimate function is to set and enforce standards of weight, measure, volume and common medium of exchange and set a few other social standards such as driving on the right, stop for red lights and don't act as an imminent, immediate, threat to others (such as driving recklessly and/or drunk).  It has a few other legitimate functions relating to keeping the peace, seperating the psychopaths from everyone else, maintaining fair and binding contracts, and setting a common manner of trade with other nations.

We no longer have any sort of government that provides these basic functions.  We have Rand's Moocher government.  With a 'Moocher' as first lady, strangely enough.

Simple answer.  There should be a one line rule that says that internet service providers cannot slow connection speed to sites such as ZH that don't pay the quasi-monopoly internet service providers for bandwith.

Do you really believe that the 3 or 4 companies who control the internet don't want to slow bandwith to sites that don't pay them?  I totally understand and agree with the outrage over the current bill.  That doesn't mean the internet companies don't want to fuck us too if given the chance.  They are hardly going to do it while this debate rages on.   They will do it when the debate is over and they've won, or the government will win and we'll get censorship.  Those are the options.

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 21:21 | 5852212 nmewn

They will do it because you ask them to.

If you're sittin around thinking this will turn out any better than ObamaCare you've got rocks in your head. ISP's have to maintain their network and it operates on best effort traffic. ZH takes practically nothing, Netflix sucks up a great deal.

It will turn into (eventually) internet-per-minute because of morons like you.

Literally nobody is talking about a one line rule.  And you must have missed what I said above about being against the current bill, or really any bill that does more than say that the quasi-monopolies that control the internet cannot throttle down speed to sites that don't pay them.  You are setting up a straw man argument against what I am saying.  Tell me why you think Verizon would not slow the internet connection speed to any site that doesn't pay them if they could, when it is enshrined in law which is what they are asking.

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 21:35 | 5852269 nmewn

And its not "just" about ISP's and speed. Its about content, why did you not say Google or Bing or any other search engine?

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 21:43 | 5852287 LetThemEatRand
LetThemEatRand's picture

I don't even know what we're debating.   The companies that provide internet service like Verizon, want to have the ability to throttle down internet speed to sites that don't pay them.  They could do it now, but they won't until this debate is finalized.  They will likely win this debate sooner or later, thanks to guys like you that can only see the trees (the government "solution" that I disagree with).  You are I are in agreement that the government proposal is bad.  You and I could not disagree more that letting these monopoly entities decide which internet sites get priority status is a good thing.  There is no free market in the internet.  There are a few companies that control it.

The internet companies are playing chess with you.  You are playing the ideology game, which is akin to checkers.

How do you define monopoly?

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 21:57 | 5852350 LetThemEatRand
LetThemEatRand's picture

I define a monopoly as one (or a few) companies that control a service.   At the moment, Brighthouse and Verizon control the large majority of the internet received in our households.  If either entity (and of course they never talk) decided to make ZH run on dial up speed, they could.

Tue, 03/03/2015 - 22:12 | 5852407 nmewn
nmewn's picture

Yet they have not, thats very odd.

I suppose if Florida Power (now Duke) decided to cut everyone off they "could" but they have not either. Something to do with supply & demand, profits, bad PR & declining subscribers, no doubt.

So again, it needs government regulation, why exactly?

Of course Verizon and Comcast have not, because it's not already regulated.  Chess, my friend.  If you controlled either company, would you start throttling down internet speed to sites like ZH before the net neutrality debate were decided in your favor?

Duke power is already regulated, or did you not get the memo.  http://www.ferc.gov/about/ferc-does/ferc101.pdf

And quit saying "zero hedge" as a way to invoke sympathy for censorship (it makes you look inane) into your speed problem (whatever that is) get FIOS or switch ISP's you've already planted enough red herrings like "you must have missed what I said above about being against the current bill..."

Nmewn, I think we're not communicating.  ZH is not slow for me.  I have FIOS.  What I'm talking about is what Verizon is going to do if left without checks and balances when they get what they want, e.g., no regulation.  I'm talking about the future.  You seem stuck in normalcy bias.

So it is back to it's roots... GEnie.

The initial price for connection, at both 300 bits per second and the then-high-speed 1200 bits per second, was $5–$6 per hour during "non-prime-time" hours (evenings and weekends) and $36 an hour (to discourage daytime use) otherwise, later adjusted to $6 per hour and $18 per hour, respectively. A speed of 2400 bit/s was also available at a premium.

You are being a touch of an asshole if you think I am saying that the only purpose of government is keeping us safe from ourselves.  The false dichotomy of the Teams is to suggest that the two parties disagree on the purpose of government, when both use it to control us.  It is exactly that which makes both parties wrong.  The valid function of elected government is to allow the many to avoid control and oppression by the few.  That equation is now turned entirely on its head in America, while the Teams pretend otherwise.

I think I get what you are saying but the idea that government will prevent the control of the many by the few misses an important point.

In a system where majority vote gets control you have the tyranny of the many over the few.

I agree, actually.  But it's not really an either/or.  The Founders created a system that attempted to address both problems.  Worked for a while until the few figured out how to usurp it, sometime around 1913.

The purpose of the bug, it grows then attacks all the blood flies that hammers cattle and horses sucking blood, causing weight loss. Eradicates the Mfers.

" keeping us safe from ourselves" is simply the meme employed to exert the control. I did not mean to imply that was government's purpose. It had not been nor ever shall be. The teams both use government to control us because that is what government is, a means to control others. Benevolent government is oxymoronic. No matter how noble the intent, it attracts those who are psychopathic in nature who warp the laws for their advantage. This has always been true historically and to think any other outcome is possible is quite naive.

This is a fair question which obviously begs after my stance. Unfortunately a response would be quite a treatise and though I would love to do so, i do not have the time to engage you fully.

However I will point you to a book that has completely changed my view on the dynamic to which we speak. This knowledge as a framework would have the possibility to keep the excesses of government in check as long as the populous is willing to be vigilant.

That seems in earnest so I shall attempt to compile scattered ideas into some cohesive presentation. However, knowing my luck when I am ready, you will assumed the role of an apostate and be no longer in need of a debate. Or, your head will be ritualistically displayed here on a spike by one of your testosterone filled detractors and you are no more.

The read is quite cerebral but very enlightening. I believe it would be worth your time. It explains how good intentions in this realm are the eventual undoing of any system considering the nature of those who seek an involvement in government are inherently power seeking to enrich themselves, not to do societal good.

Christ Miffed, that is exactly while the US experiment failed.  The populace was NOT willing to be vigilant.  If it had been vigilant, the experiment would not have failed.

So far as I can see, the US experiment was the strongest attempt at enlightened government so far.  You know, the media, the 4th estate, could have saved it.  Centralized control of the media is a recent phenomenon.  The Kennedy assassination/coup, for example... the media toed the government line by choice.  Too bloody bad.

Very true.

This is why I found that book so enlightening. He showed that it was during the " good times" when things actually unravel because this is when we become complacent and caught up in the fun. This is when the psychopaths start to work in the shadows. The good and bad times cycle is the wheel that perpetuates their power and they use it to their advantage.

I had a touch of an asshole...that's why I went two-ply.

Re: The topic...I kinda miss the old BBS system.  It had such a neighborly feel to it...and sometimes there were access points to the world wide web available where, if you had an address, you could go explore a bit.

Used that system back during the Clinton shut down working as an ancient (35 yo or so intern) for a fire department to find a phone number within the federal government for annexation grants to annex George Air Force Base for the City of Victorville Fire Department. My assignment was to establish the property tax valuation for the base over six months...it took six weeks. So they gave me other things to do.

(Base had been closed a couple of years as a land battle was fought between Victorville and Adelanto over the rights to the base.  Eerie shit, entire AF base that I had grown up with was deserted.  I could see dishes on kitchen tables, furniture and shit inside through the windows.  Weeds growing up in the roads.  It was like a couple years after a neutron bomb had gone off.  Worse, the Fire Chief's second in command took me into one of the apartments, ran water into a glass and lit it on fire.  Jet fuel permeated the water lines.)

Anyway, found a number and dialed it.  It rang a bunch of times, no answering service, and I expected not to reach anyone but to leave a call back message.  I was surprised when it was answered.

In the background I could hear two men talking back and forth.  "You ask.  No, you ask.  No!"  Finally, "uh, um, sir?  Um, who IS this?"

I tell them I'm some piss-ant intern from a city fire department looking for information.

"un, um, ", I could tell them were shaken, "where did you get this number from?"

"Oh, I found it on a BBS for the government that listed it as an information place regarding land annexations.  We're trying to annex a closed military base here in California."

"Uh, holy shit, we didn't even know that this phone existed.  It's in the wall, like a speaker and we had to figure out how to answer it...and that's not the kind of annexation we normally deal with here.  That's why you scared the living shit of us."

I still laugh over that...then look at today and get tears.

[Edit:  It's March 4, 2015.  All that housing got a nice big fence around it to hide the decay.  Base has a few businesses, 2001 until now it housed hundreds of grounded planes from 9/11, but the greatest shame is the blight and decay of all that housing.  Now, at least, it's cosmetically hidden.]
