Putin Condemns "Brazen Murder Of Boris Nemtsov" As "Politically Motivated"

Tyler Durden's picture

Vladimir Putin has broken his public silence since Boris Nemtsov's murder and, perhaps unsurprisingly, stirred up further controversy. While condemning the "brazen murder of Boris Nemtsov right in the center of the capital," WSJ reports, he told senior Police officials to "finally rid Russia of shame and tragedy" of politically-motivated murders. As The Guardian notes, this seemingly contradicts theories the former deputy prime minister was shot over a domestic or business row.

Boris Nemtsov, as The Guardian notes, is the most prominent opposition figure to be killed in Russia during Putin’s 15-year rule.

Many prominent political murders have remained unsolved in the past, and the US president, Barack Obama, and Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, have called on the Kremlin to make sure the Nemtsov killing is properly investigated.

As The Wall Street Journal reports,

Russian President Vladimir Putin told senior police officials Wednesday that they should “finally rid Russia of shame and tragedy” such as the killing of opposition activist Boris Nemtsov, his first public comments on the slaying.

Mr. Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister who later became a fierce Kremlin critic, was gunned down near the Kremlin late Friday, a murder that opposition allies blame on the authorities.

“The most serious attention should be paid to high-profile crimes, including those with a political motive. We need to finally rid Russia of shame and tragedy such as we experienced and saw very recently. I mean the brazen murder of Boris Nemtsov right in the center of the capital,” he said in a speech.

Investigators haven’t named any suspects in the case, but say they are questioning witnesses, carrying out forensic analysis and have checked security camera footage.

The Kremlin released a statement from Mr. Putin shortly after the murder, saying it looked like a contract killing and was of a “provocative nature,” suggesting it was aimed at discrediting authorities.

Investigators say they are looking into whether Mr. Nemtsov was a “sacrificial victim” used to destabilize the country. Other theories include a link to the conflict in Ukraine or Islamist extremists.

Asked Wednesday whether there were any suspects in the case, the head of Russia’s FSB security service, Alexander Bortnikov, was quoted by state news agencies as saying: “There always are.”

As The Guardian concludes, Putin's comments seemingly contradicts theories the former deputy prime minister was shot over a domestic or business row.

Name the speaker of this excerpt from a speech given in October 2014:

The measures taken against those who refuse to submit are well-known and have been tried and tested many times. They include use of force, economic and propaganda pressure, meddling in domestic affairs, and appeals to a kind of ‘supra-legal’ legitimacy when they need to justify illegal intervention in this or that conflict or toppling inconvenient regimes. Of late, we have increasing evidence too that outright blackmail has been used with regard to a number of leaders. It is not for nothing that ‘big brother’ is spending billions of dollars on keeping the whole world, including its own closest allies, under surveillance.

Let’s ask ourselves, how comfortable are we with this, how safe are we, how happy living in this world, and how fair and rational has it become? Maybe, we have no real reasons to worry, argue and ask awkward questions? Maybe the United States’ exceptional position and the way they are carrying out their leadership really is a blessing for us all, and their meddling in events all around the world is bringing peace, prosperity, progress, growth and democracy, and we should maybe just relax and enjoy it all?

Let me say that this is not the case, absolutely not the case.

It's either Ron Paul, Vladimir Putin, or Edward Snowden.

A failing global monetary system, however, chained to a dying dollar (and Russia's desire to move away from said dollar) may have something to do with it.

Stalin had 99.99% approval rate and was constantly killing his opponents. This was/is the Russia, Soviet, and post-Soviet way to stay in power. Russian and Soviet dictators ALWAYS were afraid of their own shadow.

For people outside of Russia, it is close to impossible to understand why such things do take place. Just a simple Russia history statistics: near 50% of all Russian Czars were murdered as well as the Soviet dictator Joe Stalin who was poisoned by his own internal circle.

IMHO, the present Russia elite is starting to break apart. Yes, Nemtsov was not recently in the highest echelon of power but he, like Putin, was one of top Yeltsin's people who now rule Russia. It is of interest that Yeltsin's widow as well as many present oligarchs outside of Putin nearest circle have attended Nemtsov funerals.

To make a long story short, the Nemtsov murder was just a beginning of the present straggle for power. It was the Putin's opening shot. The murder spree at the highest level of Russia power is just started. The same was after Lenin and Stalin death.

So let me ask, are you saying that he ordered an assassination to be carried out by not so subtle gunman on a public way, with witness and cameras all around, close to the Kremlin, and not even bothering to make it look like a suicide or something, nor killing a close witness (the girlfriend)? Yeah right, that really looks like a former KGB style... I guess they just forgot to drop Putin's own passport on the crime scene...

Murder in Moscow: Why was Boris Nemtsov assassinated?

3 March 2015

The assassination of Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov is a significant political event that arises out of the US-Russia confrontation and the intense struggle that is now underway within the highest levels of the Russian state. The Obama administration and the CIA are playing a major role in the escalation of this conflict, with the aim of producing an outcome that serves the global geo-political and financial interests of US imperialism.

The relations between the United States and Russia are approaching a point of breakdown, with potentially catastrophic consequences. The Obama administration has concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin must be removed from power, based on the Kremlin’s refusal to accept, as a fait accompli, the overthrow last year of the democratically elected Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych, and its opposition to the complete economic and military integration of Ukraine into the US sphere of influence.

Especially in the aftermath of Russia’s interference in US plans to attack Syria in 2013 and its granting of political asylum to NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden, Putin’s continued presidency has been deemed incompatible with US geo-political interests. Thus, the decision has been made to instigate—through international political pressure, economic sanctions, and covert operations of various sorts—Putin’s removal from power.

It is all but obvious that the Obama administration is hoping a faction will emerge within the Russian elite, backed by elements in the military and secret police, capable of staging a “palace coup” and getting rid of Putin. The personal fate of the Russian president—whether he goes the way of Serbia’s Milosevic, Romania’s Ceausescu, Iraq’s Hussein or Libya’s Gaddafi—is to be decided by the circumstances of his ouster.

It just seems like Putin assassinating a small time political opponent right now would do him more political damage than good. It's not like Nemtsov was seriously busting his balls, the guy was more likely just trying to make a few bucks and bang a girl half his age. Putin gets smeared by this, when he is trying to survive playing a much bigger game with international players, and the US trying to destroy his countries soft underbelly.

I don't think Putin was in on it.

I'm not sure political damage is of much concern to Mr Putin. Electorate have a short attention span. Opposition is opposition especially in the mind of a dictator. Nemtsov was going to announce last Sunday the proof of ussian involvement in East Ukraine. Its easier to swat them when they only have 1 or 2% of the eletorate rather than say 25 or 30%  where assasination becomes much more politically risky.

CIA could of done it but why? Nemtsov was tiny politically but noisy. Where is the American advantage?

Ukraine? They are not going to shoot someone who is on their side.

Another Oligarch or someone else in Putin's government who does not like him? Possibly and genuinely worrying for Putin.

My money is still on Vlad. Russian opposition leaders have a low life expectancy.

Perhaps "The Bamster" could call on his own AG's office to make sure the 2008 sub prime mess is properly investigated?

Just sayin.

LOL, Putin saying te murder was "Politt tea cally mote teai vaeted"...no shit, you ordered the hit

Seriously, just like the deja vu assoiated with ther Putin critics, such as Alexander Litvinenko and Anna Politkovskaya

Like Boris, Anna was also characterized as "insignificant", and Putin ws "in charge" of that "investgaton" also

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_reaction_to_the_assassination...

"In a statement in DresdenGermany that came three days after the murder, President Vladimir Putin promised a "thorough investigation."[32] Furthermore:

"Whoever has committed this crime," Putin said, "and whatever their guiding motives, we should state that this is a horribly cruel crime. It must not remain unpunished, of course."[33]

According to Putin, Politkovskaya's influence on Russian political life was "very minor".[34] Politkovskaya was a critic of the authorities, Putin noted, and her influence should not be overestimated. "It was minimal," he concluded. "She was known among journalists and in human rights circles and in the West, but I repeat that she had no influence on political life. Her murder causes much more harm than her publications did. Whoever did it will be punished." Two hours later, at the session of the St. Petersburg Dialog, the subject arose again. "Those people who are hiding from Russian justice are willing to sacrifice anyone to create a wave of anti-Russian feeling," Putin said.[31]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Anna_Politkovskaya

"In addition, more than 1,000 people (later estimation: more than 3,000) gathered at the Russian embassy in Helsinki, Finland to pay their respects to Politkovskaya. The demonstration was silent, with people holding candles. Two of Politkovskaya's books have been published in Finland as translated editions.[24]

On 10 October 2006, 2,000 demonstrators called Putin a "murderer" during his visit to DresdenGermany.[25][26][27] Putin replied:

"This journalist was indeed a sharp critic of the present Russian authorities...but the degree of her influence over political life in Russia was extremely insignificant. She was well-known in journalistic circles, among human rights activists, in the West. I repeat, her influence over political life in Russian was minimal.[28] And in my opinion murdering such a person certainly does much greater damage from the authorities’ point of view, authorities that she strongly criticized, than her publications ever did."[29][30][31]
§Possibly related events in the aftermath of her death[edit]

Politkovskaya's assassination was discussed by the media in connection with the deaths of other critics of Putin,[32] including her colleague from Novaya Gazeta Yuri Shchekochikhin,[33][34] Russian Duma members Galina Starovoitova and Sergei Yushenkov, and journalist Artyom Borovik:[35]

  • A week after the assassination, Alexander Litvinenko accused Putin of sanctioning the murder. Two weeks after this statement, Litvinenko was poisoned with radioactive polonium. Two days before his death on 24 November 2006, he wrote a statement, in case he "does not make it". He said:
"Name the bastard. Anna Politkovskaya did not do it, so I will, for both of us.[36] You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people".
Yup, with Boris, nothing new to see here..has been done quite a few times before,

Congratulations for learning such an advanced skill. Maybe there's hope for you yet. Perhaps someday you won't even need your mommy to wipe your butt for you.

But i see that you have no retort for the established Putin pattern...

Any opposition or critic gets murdered...smells a lot like the third reich

and or Stalin..th great leader for the proliteriat (although hitler hated the use of that word, stalin not so much), when if fact its an oligarchy or plutocracy..only pootie, freinds and mafia benefit

Hitler took power via a flase flag. The very idea of Putin killing a washed up clown with a 1% approval rating, and most people under 30 did not even know the guys name, the idea that Putin opened himself up to global criticism by offing the ass clown within sight of Putin's own Kremlin office, is a bit much. We might ask about the 23 year old girl frind from Kiev who flew in and was picked up by him at the airport. From the moment SHE arrived, a series of cars trailed the couple all day and into the evening. The lat trail car was the get away car, he was shot dead, she, the best witness to the crime was left untouched.

Putin did it. Of course nearly every westerner who says this, knows it is not true. But they say it to seek to get the political gain that there is to be gotten.

Who killed this washed up nobody? How the fuck should I know? There were many people with many reasons to knock him off. Not the least of which reside in Kiev and Washington DC. I suspect that his Kiev girlfriend who flew in to stay with him and he dies just a few hours later, has something to do with it.

Dude, this is zero hedge, furk Occam of wot?! look, if you aren't sucking on complicated shit pulled straight out of the wet of your brown-eye, you're just not getting it. Listen, just listen man, tune in to the vibe, the truth is fucking obvious when you do. The truth's in here if you open your eyes up and see what's really going on! It's no fun going against the stupid, why?! It just annoys everyone and gets warm piss all over the wall! So mellow out with the razor stuff man, it's violent and not too cool, and it won't work anyway, because we're way past that, it doesn't even fit reality any more, and you need to realize that and stop pretending its supposed to make sense like that. And that's your problem man, just let go, that shit's not even worth it! Let it go.

Jack you might want to check out the interview on Red Ice with Veronica Clark "Demystifiying Popular Nazi Conspiracy Theories", re that "Hitler took power via a false flag". Seems he knew nothing about it or the communists apparently , they were all caught off guard by the actions of a lone communist pyromaniac who set several fires that day. Of course they were quick to use it to their advantage but the point is it was,nt deliberate. Good interview with a sound researcher.

So Putin will be asking the US embassy to close up shop? That would be the logical first step.

Nemtsov and his Godfater Berezovsky had always been the most unpopular, if I could use these word at all, figures in Russia. It is funny to read some of you thinking anybody would care about Nemtsov, especially Putin, as if he has nothing else to do. US media is the wrong place to learn about the world but this is what Uncle Sam hopes you would do.

Nemtsov's murder is just like the MH17 Malaysian airliner murder.  Funny how Obummer and his stooge Kerry immediately blamed Putin for both murders.  A desperate attempt by the West to villify Putin and destabalize Russia who currently threatens the global domination of the dollar.
