The most obnoxiously noisy commercial passenger plane ever built... Fuckin' things will rattle your teeth when they take off. They have diffusers for those Pratt & Whitney noise bomb engines, but few airports require retrofitting the old warhorses with them.

I did the same thing once in an old Pontiac Catalina. But I only had about 150 on board because that car was slightly smaller than an MD-80.

Not necessicarily, the MD-80 series can have up to 5 fuel tanks (2 wing tanks, one center tank and two optional auxillary tanks) this accident would have opened one wing tank at least but that doesn't mean there was only 300 gal left on the plane.

If there was only 300 gal total fuel left on the plane that would be close to declaring a fuel emegrency because the pilot couldn't afford to be in a holding pattern or miss a landing attempt.

Slightly off topic public service announcement about Allegiant Airlines.
If you are considering flying Allegiant don't do it. It's the equivalent of hitch-hiking by plane. So far I've experiened just about everything except a flight being close to on time and a fiery crash.
I swore the last time I would never do it again. We sat on the runway for hours with no AC, then got towed back where we got off the plane and watched the machanic work on the plane from a ladder on top of a step van. Hours later we got back on the plane and the pilot said these planes were great even as the engine sounded like a pair of wet sneakers in a clothes dryer.
We got off the plane again and waited hours for another plane.
Mrs. chunga would be in FL relaxing but no, Allegiant flight was delayed 7 hours so we gave up. This was a few days ago with no weather problems. Allegiant Airline also charges a seperate "seat fee" suggesting that it's somehow possible for passemgers to stand. Now we've got another ice-storm waiting for power to go out again, last time was for almost a week and it's my fault.
Fuck you Allegiant. Fuck you.

Someone needs to be hired to clean up the environmental spill, someone needs to be employed to pull the plane out of the ditch and probably wreck it, all of the business types will need to buy internet to do their work, some of them will inevitably stay at hotels and eat food... were any windows on the plane busted? Then we need an army of busybodies to make sure that everyone did all of that properly.

I refuse to fly on an MD-88. Worst for turbulence, loud and uncomfortable.
US airlines are a joke. It sounds funny but China Southern is ten times the airline Delta is.
Not to mention the single point of failure issue on the jackscrews in the tail, most other commercial passenger aircraft have redundant hydraulic controls. If one system fails there's a backup, no so on the MD-80 design. I'm not an airline mechanic but based on many shitty flight experiences on MD-80/88/90 and the jackscrew issue I won't fly on them

If this info I found is correct, this plane was kinda old for a commercial aircraft with a major carrier, maybe not by official standards such as they are today but I'd be reluctant to knowingly fly on a plane as old as this one.

I realize that it's not the absolute age of the plane but the total flight hours that matter but I can't find any figures on how many hours were logged on N909DL. Most airlines tend to fly the heck out of planes and 27.7 years is quite a bit of flying (unless this plane was put in storage for a while which could raise other issues)
