The Recovery Is Complete: America Adds Most Waiters And Bartenders Since 2013
The last time the US economy was said to be about to blast off into an "above consensus" growth phase, and when everyone predicted a recovery was "just around the corner" sending the 10 Year to 3%, was the second half of 2013, right as the Fed was about to begin tapering QE3 (not because things were getting better but because it was about to run out of bonds to monetize as the TBAC warned the same summer). It was back then, and specifically August 2013, that said economy added a whopping 72 thousand waiters and bartenders according to the BLS.
We are happy to report that in February, the US economy added a recovery-validating 58,700 waiters and bartenders, the highest monthly increase in this minimum wage category in 18 months.
Surely the recovery is not only upon us, but it is time for the Fed to hike rates, because as the WSJ praised over the weekend, the "Waiter and bartender recovery" has truly arrived. Again.

Good point, Tide. I was talking to a receptionist and her bf was awaiting layoffs in the oil drilling business. I had just read the headllines that this company was laying off 7,000 people.
Should we guess what 7,000 job losses in the oil drilling business look like compared to a gain of 7,000 waiters and bartenders working half a job?
So, in government math, a guy losing a full time with benefits job at an oil industry job is precisely balanced by a part time bar tender doing no more than 20 hours with no benefits. This is a zero sum in government math...only it is not even close in the real world.
This is why it makes most people want to hit the roof every time the radio or TV blasts how we are superb 5.5% unemployment and things are roaring back.
Seems like the stock market did not buy it, either, today.

I agree and let's all consider that it takes considerably fewer bodies than the 90% to serve the .1%. I've heard it said that with govt. the policy to solve a problem always takes so long to roll out that it is counterproductive byu the time it's implemented. So true w/ immigration. Progressives want warm bodies who'll swallow MSM swill and actually show up to vote or put on a uniform. But with a gutted economy and king dollar on fire, they should be clamping down hard on immigration. But no... in fact this should have been the case for well over a decade. Anyway - maybe someone thought of this for a cartoon. Robot talking with his tax man about how to finagle some deductions. In my new position I'm getting just over 30 hours a week, and really awful shifts from from like 1 or 3 to 9pm. at most 5 days a week. I'm getting this only because I offered my availability as always available. They are only paying me 7.30 per hour. This is a really nice grocery store, owned by a huge national corp. Most of the cuts of meat that I sell would cost me around 3 to 4 hours of labor. At this point I had to just accept anything. I guess when I'm on the steet because I can't even afford my mortgage payment; which happens to be lower than rents in my area, I can just wash up in the store bathroom. I'm hoping that I can pitch a tent in the grass between parking lots at the back of the store.
In a previous life I was highly educated, made tons of money working in positions that would now be considered great. I have also created start ups with tangible products that addressed needs. Now I find it almost impossible to get back into this world because my credit is ruined due to my last start up that did noit pan out. Try and get an interview for a nice position, and they will do major background checks and eliminate you if your credit sucks. It used to be around 790! I might be getting some capital soon to work on another project. I see no future working for anyone else but myself at this point.

The average American is on the bandwagon again slapping down those credit cards, borrowing and spending with nary a thought to the future. I see it in my central coast California town of 28,000 souls, er,spenders. Eighteen months ago our downtown which sports 8 wine bars, an irish pub and upscale Mexican and steak oriented eateries with bars was deserted, but is now booming full of people spending money before they've earned it. It took a while for the herd to become exuberant spenders again, but here we are at last just before the next depression arrives. A year or two from now we will be talking about the people we know who just had their credit cards interest rates raised to 39% on cards with large balances, all the bank failures, the carnage in all the markets, maybe even martial law (it won't be called that) but DHS will be on the streets because of a conflict with one or all of the BRICS. and a general replay of 2008-2009 but a lot worse because the various central banks QE guns are empty as are the rainy day funds of most Americans.
Me thinks they are confused and now classifying people behind bars as bartenders.
Or perhaps the jailers and guards.

Before depression. . . mostly everyone is working full time chugging along . . . bankers were making a lot . . . but not 10,000X the wages of their employees. . . .
after the "recovery" everyone was pushed into "servant" positions while the same bankers got bailout bonuses and up scaled their life-style . . .

Actually, waiters don't even have to be paid minimum wage, as the NRA (national restaurant assn) got an exemption on the assumption the discrepancy would be more than made up for in tips. Varies by state, with base as low as $2.13, see http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

I just went to my Buffalo Wild Wings, WAS PACKED, mostly NBA NHL and a couple NCAA Hoops games going on with also a small faction of people who were either on trivia or a video poker game... ratio of servers-to-tables was 1-to-4, all servers were 17s to mid-20s with most looking like they were still undergrads. Will be interesting to see how many are still there a few years from now when they can't find any not-food-service jobs upon graduating
Bread and Circuses. I'm guilty of it as much as anyone given my love of the NFL and college basketball. However, both are declining and I'm less and less interested in them as the years go by given how corrupt and PC they've become, and I just have better things to do (you know like actually improve my life by going to the gym and reading as opposed to mindlessly following & supporting a bunch of thug athletes and their 1% owners)
